I had the pleasure of Tarkan at Lucky butchers help out. Tarkan personally prepared the cuts we needed. This was old fashioned service not enjoyed for 20 years. This store needs help. I was treated terribly when I was at self check-out and it didn't recognize onions even tho I typed it in. Lady was rude about telling me the codes. Every time I have gone into the self check line item prices aren't found for some products. To me I see no redeeming factor to the store upgrade. I have never shopped at a store that checkers forget to give you your change back, but its frequent here. San Carlos deserves a better store and service than Lucky provides. After tonight Im boycotting the store and will continue to give my business to Nob Hill. read more

Bigger than the Millbrae Lucky I used to frequent but the items aren't as organized or with as much selection as the Millbrae location. Definitely not as good on ethnic food selections as the Millbrae location and not as much meat selection either (no ground pork or cubed ham). I will say the checkout line is usually properly staffed unlike the Belmont El Camino Safeway down the street. I drive 3 miles out to this Lucky for a faster checkout experience (and better prices) than the Safeway which is 2 blocks from me. read more

Eh... This place is unsanitary!!! I got a deli sandwich from there, and when I took a bite out of it- I found a black curly hair. Which made me want to puke. I guess they don't wear hairnets while making food. Plus their women' bathroom is gnarly. When I walked in, I saw used feminine products just laying around. A good, medium-sized supermarket. None of that "prices double unless you sign up for our affinity card and give up all your privacy", like Safeway. Reasonable vegetables. Good frozen food section. Bakery OK, not great. Has self-checkouts, Bank of America ATM and a Coinstar. Plenty of parking. Easy to get in and out. A good place to stock up on non-perishable stuff. Get your canned goods and cleaning supplies here, buy for a month at a time, then go to Trader Joe's for the perishables. read more

This review is all about 5Star Customer Service and what a wonderful thing it is to experience. If you ever need anything... ask to speak to Sergio... I first contacted Sergio when he was the manager of the Lucky's store in Pacifica. I was in Texas and didn't know how to contact a florist that was in the same shopping center as the Lucky's store. I thought if I contacted the Lucky's I might get the name of the florist and then be able to get their number out of directory assistance, Sergio answered the phone and when I explained what I wanted, he informed me that he sold flowers and plants. I thanked him but advised him that I needed to have the flowers delivered to my daughter for Valentine's. He assured me that he could do that. Sergio collected various candies, a card and a plant and delivered them to my daughter within 30 minutes. That was two years ago and he has done this for me and my daughter since then for Mothers Day and for her birthday. Yesterday I called the Pacifica store(Yes, I'm still in Texas) and discovered that Sergio was now in San Carlos. I called to find out if he knew the manager in Pacifica. Sergio stepped up immediately. Sergio is again delivering the flowers, balloons, candy and card to my daughter in Daly City for Mothers Day. Though I have never met Sergio in person, we share great conversations regarding our families and basketball. I appreciate what Sergio does for me and that he genuinely cares for his customers. He goes beyond SOP(Standard Operating Procedures). 5 Star Customer Service is where you find it. He personalizes the customers experience. What can Sergio do for you? read more

So, first off, I don't write a lot of really negative reviews. I think a lot of people are too quick to complain about things that may be the reflection of someone having a bad day or a glitch that may be a one time event. However, if I could give negative stars anywhere it would be here. As a matter of fact, I honestly think this store should be shut down. This review is not based on a one time event. Unfortunately, this store is by far the closest grocery store to me, as I am almost always in a rush I keep going back, hoping that things will improve. They haven't. And there have been so many times that I went there shopping for dinner for my family, then had finally gotten home after working all day only to discover that I had to go out again, to a different store, because I bought something that on opening or closer inspection turned out to be spoiled or rotten. Start with food quality - Their produce is abysmal, you have to really look at what your buying, vegetables are often mixed with moldy or past ripe pieces. Every single time I am there I have to sort through rotten pieces of whatever I am buying to find the ok pieces. And the staff seems not to care, one time I told the produce man that half the onions in the pile were visibly moldy, he just said "ok" and then went over to look at them- I turned the corner, and he looked to see if I was still there, and when he didn't see me he just walked away and left all the moldy produce there! I came back the next day for something I forgot and sure enough they were still there. And its not just produce - you have to check everything you buy, every trip I find items still on the shelves that are past their expiration date. However, the strongest indicator of how this store functions is this - one time I picked up an ice cream container and it was completely liquid; their freezer had failed and all the food in the center cases had thawed. I alerted the manager, and they thanked me and cleared out the cases. For about a week they were working on the cases, and then finally they got it fixed. I was having an ice cream party at my house, so I picked up 4 or 5 gallons and pints of different sizes and brands to take home, and can you guess what's coming? All of the ice cream had that look and consistency that only comes when it has been melted and then re-frozen. They did not throw away the food when it thawed, they kept it and re-sold it!!! Completely disgusting, unsanitary, and I would hope against the law for re-selling spoiled food. When I brought it to the attention all the manager said was "I'm sorry, ma'am" over and over and over again. He didn't deny it, and he didn't even offer to give me my money back. As for the deli section - their deli sandwiches are disgusting, I picked up several sandwiches for a meeting and no one could take more than a few bites, they all said they tasted horrible, like they were close to being spoiled. I have bought pre-packed salads and when I opened it they were rotten, the lettuce brown and slimy. Their cupcakes are good when they are fresh, but half the time they taste stale, and expiration dates don't seem to indicate anything. I asked the lady at the deli counter is she could tell me which cupcakes were fresh, and she sighed, like I was bothering her, and said "I don't know, check the expiration dates. " I raised my eyebrows at her and she then said "the ones in the freezer are fresh". I could go on for at least 20 pages about this store, the horrible customer service is, how even the employees complain how horrible it is to work there and how they "don't care what happens here" - a cashier said this. They are completely apathetic and just can't be bothered to help. You ask them if they carry a product, and most of the time they automatically say "no, we don't carry that" . Then I find it myself in the course of doing my shopping. And I have to laugh at the huge "3's a crowd" banners over every register that the cashiers completely ignore. The bags are cheap and always break, the baggers pack things horribly and eggs are broken and cakes are smashed, the store feels grimy, the employees are rude, etc, ad infinitum. If someone tried to do everything wrong from start to finish they couldn't do better than this store. It should be a Monty Python sketch. I have finally given up. As many times as they said, "we know there is a problem, we are working on it", nothing happens. I really wanted this store to succeed, but they would need to re-train all the staff and start over. Bottom line: if you want to save money, time, and your blood pressure I would suggest you don't shop here. read more

Much better than Safeway! I find this store and its prices much better than either Safeway in Belmont or the one at Crystal Springs. Unlike other reviewers, I never have trouble finding staff and the lines aren't long. Maybe I'm just lucky, but they always seem to have everything is stock. read more

This is a very uncommunity minded store. Most stores will donate or give a percentage off for hometown events/runs. I was told that this store no longer gives anything to the community and this comes from the manager. I was not asking for much just 10% discount for oranges for the runners in the hometown day run. They price items higher at this Lucky's than the Lucky's at Woodside road in Redwood City. My mother saw some items at this Lucky's and she pointed out that the items are higher than the Lucky's on Woodside Road in Redwood City. The clerk said no its not. My mother said it is and the clerk kept denying it. Then she brought the manager over and he completely denied it. I called the head office and they said yes, we price items higher in some Lucky stores than others because it is the type of buyer in that particular area. I said that is ripping off the public and that is not fair! You are a chain of supermarkets not individual stores. The guy on the phone said I'm sorry you feel that way, and I said it isn't based on my feelings, its based on fact. He was totally silent and he didn't seem to care. This should not be tolerated by the customers because the consumer is being ripped off. I hope this will bring to light to others to demand that Lucky's treat all their customers equally and fair. read more

The people seem quite friendly, but to tell the truth, I mostly use the automated checkout lanes. There is no place in the area that can beat lucky for prices, except maybe Costco, and then you need to buy massive quantities with limited selection. If you want a good bang for your buck, this is definitely the place to shop. read more

I go into this store once in awhile because it's right on the way home from work. It seems like 9 out of 10 times there are issues at the registers.They either talk WAY too much like I have all day or even care what they are saying. As for bagging...oh my gosh, they look at you when there's no bagger like you're suppose to bag them when you don't, they do it then slide the bag your way to put in the cart your self. If I wanted that I'd go to the self check out ( which I do sometimes). If there is any kind of problem the cashier's are combative. One lady at the register next to me told the cashier that she'd given her a 20 not a 10 that she got change from. Instead of saying she was sorry and that they'd work it out that cashier got all mad and offended.It was HORRIBLE customer service. Lucky needs to have some major training on customer service and bagging. I'd go more then "once in awhile" if the customer service was better. Oh, and the "3or more" and they open another register...haha, yeah right. Last but not least.,..they need to cover those shopping carts up outside. When it's raining you get stuck with a wet cart and also, those things are really rusty and old for the most part. read more

Made the mistake of going to Lucky instead of Safeway! I waited at self checkout for someone to help because the self checkout station Lucky is closer, but I'll drive the extra two miles next time even if it is for only a couple of things, or pay the premium prices of Bianchini's or brave the over-crowded parking lot of Trader Joes. read more

The employees working here are very rude, ignorant, immature, & low. I was at the refrigerated meat section looking at the wide display of steaks on sale. Then out of nowhere I heard loud mocking laughter and rude talking. Therefore I looked in the direction of what I was hearing and it was a Lucky supermarket male employee butcher and a Lucky supermarket male employee inventory stock clerk. These two men were already staring at me and having a rude conversation together by talking rudely about me at the same time laughing at me. They were being derisive. I didn't do anything wrong to them. I didn't do anything to provoke them. I was minding my own business. They mocked/made fun of me/ my appearance. I think it's because I'm of a ethnic minority race, a female, & of my physical appearance. I felt I was being picked on and bullied on things beyond of my control. What is going on with Luckys??? I've been shopping at Luckys for the past 20 years and during the past 5 years I've noticed a huge change in quality. However nothing prepared me for what I saw today. I was in the San Carlos store & the meat selection was beyond horrible. I had gone in with the idea of purchasing some chicken breasts & in the past they have had some decent prices with 'ok' quality - but today.... WOW! There was a frozen package of chicken breasts that ONLY had THREE open breasts in it going for $10.00! When I took a good look at it by moving the plastic around, I could see that the meat had obviously been frozen before & had freezer burn on it. Then I noticed that close to one of the entrances was a small freezer with 'deals' inside. I found some chicken breasts but they had this ugly yellow/orange membrane or slime on them. My idea for my family's dinner quickly changed to steaks & that wasn't much better. The cuts were really bad - they had A LOT of fat within the meat. I don't know about you, but I hate to chew my red meat to the point to where I end up spitting it out because of the fat content. I ended up purchasing a package of 2 thin cut steaks that cost me over $8.00 which I felt were over priced but at least it was the lessor of all evils to feed my family. I can't necessarily blame the workers in the meat department for what I saw, because it's known that they are only taking orders from management. This is something that needs to be corrected immediately. I strongly suggest that Luckys management take a look into the meat departments of Safeway & Whole Foods. read more

This place is terrible! It looks and feels dirty and the prices are not that great either! The staff are rude and carry on personal conversations while they are checking your groceries. Something needs to be done to update this place. I mostly shop at Trader Joe's and go here only when I needs something TJ's doesn't carry. They bag terribly when they bag and never smile. Customer service goes a long way. And not giving back to the community that you serve? Very tacky! Sponsoring an event or providing a discount for an event goes a long way in assuring people will come to your store! And lets face it, 10% is not going to close the doors! I will not shop at the San Carlos LUCKYs (should be called UNLUCKY"S for Us) again...Bought a bag of oranges for $3.69 and discovered 4 on bottom with rotten and or broken open...I brought them back and asked for my money back, which was no problem, but the Manager would not replace another bag at the same rate, since ONE day later the same oranges were now $6.69...Rude Manager, just walk away and I watched her bring the oranges back to the same spot I bought them the previous day...Employee Clerk told me , after I mentioned to her "it's stuff like this that makes me love Trader Joes: Yes, but we're convenient" ... I have had other problems with swiping my credit card with their machines and having the clerks tell me I should use automatic check out, because they were busy doing nothing....NEVER AGAIN..If it's not at Trader Joes I'll shop at Safeway.....Jeff Young San Carlos since 1977....Only Losers should shop here with the losers that work ( are employed) here..... read more

It is a tradition in my house to serve Prime Rib for the holidays. Last year, I started a new tradition of purchasing the Prime Rib at Lucky Supermarket in San Carlos. This year, it was no exception. The store was beautiful decorated with fall colors and it had a warm glow about it. You can tell the employees had the holiday spirit because everyone was smiling as I walked towards the back of the store to reach the Meat Dept. I think about at least 3 different employees greeting me and asked if they can help me find something. (It is very difficult to find exceptional customer service these days!) When I finally reached the department, I was greeting by a very tall butcher with a big smile. The cut of Prime Rib was ready for me - no waiting! It was cut beautifully and seasoned well. It smelled wonderful. Thank you Lucky Supermarket in San Carlos! You made my Thanksgiving even better! See you in a couple of weeks for Christmas! read more
