2 stars for the owner who came to setup a quote but lack the ability to follow up when asked questions about liabilities and injuries while working on my property. Strict requirements are the offer by our main Harbor Bay HOA as they are strict in following rules setup for HB homeowners. Since documentation is key to a successful company, Luck Star never followed through despite a few follow up email messages. Many other contractors were quoting my project but many failed the documentation side of the calls, as they seek no liabilities to workmanship, injuries and quality of the lumber, especially with today inflationary process. . read more

I had to wait about a week before Simon could come out and take a look, but I'm glad I did. Of all the quotes I received, Simon was the 2nd lowest but they seemed very reliable so I hired them. They were able to come out and do my driveway approach a week earlier than scheduled, which was a plus. They took one day to demo my old concrete, which was much harder than anticipated. Simon and his crew have completed two projects for me the past few months. The first was a large concrete patio and walkway in my back yard. I reached out for a price, Simon was out within a couple days, gave me the price on the spot and we scheduled it for that week. I already knew what my budget was and I knew what a fair price was to me. I love it, they are hard working, show attention to detail and it turned out better than I anticipated. Simon was on-site several times during the week and was always available for questions. They finished it on time and on budget. The second project was a French drain and retaining wall, about 100 lf of French drain and 50 lf of wall. It looks great, they had a lot of dirt to move and access was a little challenging. Again, on time and in budget. I'll find out how it works this next rainy season, the last one flooded my yard and workshop. Keeping my fingers crossed. I would mention that at the end of each day I had to pick up after the crew. I have a 2 year old and numerous pets. Periodically I found cigarette butts on the ground, empty water bottles, a little trash laying around, and their power tools. I spent a good month or two getting quotes from contractors looking to build a covered area for a smoker. During this time, the location and scope of the job changed, and Simon was more than happy to come back out and redo the quote in the new area. He also came in WAY under on pricing compared to virtually everyone else. We wanted redwood, and other companies were wanting double what Simon quoted us. Once we came to an agreement on design and color options, they got to work almost immediately. Simon and crew spent the week working on it, and did a great job capturing what we wanted. They worked around some structural challenges we had, namely a slab of concrete that was lifted by a tree. Lucky Star Landscaping is truly a hidden gem!!! My mother's backyard is very big, and this project only took about 8 days. Mind you, the backyard was very bare with weeds growing out yearly. It was just a hassle to maintain such a big yard. So my mom and I called Simon over for an estimate it was the best estimate we've got! We chose Lucky Star to do the project right away. We wanted black sheets and gopher nets for gophers and weeds through the whole backyard, and laid artificial turf on top. The hardest part was ordering the artificial turf, my mom and I were having a hard time since everywhere was out of artificial turf and it would've took weeks for the new turf to come in. But Simon was quick to handle the situation and got the artificial turf RIGHT AWAY. The other half of the yard we planted five fruit trees and ordered peat moss to be laid out. The walk way from made from scratch with materials like slate and rock that we already had. All the workers did an amazing job! They came during the hottest weeks of the month, yet they still did an excellent job. They were all nice, funny, and very sweet. I'm very glad we hired them! Quick response, even quicker service. They redid my backyard with pavers and finished 1-2 days early. They removed two trees and a few plants in no time. There was a very minor issue with my drain being stuck in the ground from some concrete that spilled over the top of the medal drain. I called to get some assistance removing the drain cover and they came over the same day and fixed the problem in 30 minutes. Also the price for the service could not be beat. Simon and his crew were professional, punctual, and beyond patient as they had to deal with jerks that happen to be my neighbors. They harassed Simon and his crew pretty much the entire time they were working on remodeling my patio since my neighbors, who happen to be on the HOA board, telling Simon that my project wasn't approved, which was an outright lie since I had all the paperwork to show it was approved. My neighbors were being big-time jerks since they never asked us directly if it was approved since I could have easily shown them my paperwork (plus they should know better since they're on the freaking board!); instead they chose to bully Simon and his crew even calling security on them twice. The way my neighbors were behaving was so embarrassing. They looked and sounded like all those videos posted of white people yelling belligerently at people of color. We really should've taken videos of them, but we're respectful people and we just let them throw their tantrums because we knew we were right since, once again, our project was APPROVED. Simon, Tom, and their team removed a 20'x 20' concrete pad, installed flagstones, built a raised bed with stones, evened out the yard, moved some plants, installed a sprinkler system and sod in our backyard. We love the results. The team was very friendly and tidy every step of the way. The project took a week. I won't lie; I picked them because they were the cheapest bid I got. I've had a lot of bad luck with cheaper bids but we decided quality and stress was less important than price for this project. As such, my expectations were low but they completely surprised me. I really appreciated how they heard my feedback when I came out to inspect on occasion and moved things around when I asked. I drew a to-scale picture for them to follow so they'd know exactly what I wanted. And they followed it! I saw them refer to it regularly. (I can't say how often I've seen my drawings in the trash long before the project is done.) Then when things started making their way into place, I changed my mind a bit. Thankfully, I worked from home that week so I could provide feedback right away and the changes to work already completed were thus minimal. I did request a few things which caused a reasonable change order cost. Another thing I appreciated was the materials. I sent Simon links to every item I wanted and drew the picture before he created the quote. When they started installing everything, they brought in exactly what I asked for (not a cheaper variant.) We found Lucky Star after outreaching to landscape contractors for 2+ months to help us re-do our backyard patio and garden after we had to demo the whole thing to eradicate an underground rat infestation. Our scope of work included removing all of the old plantings, installing a new stamped and integrally colored concrete patio (the old concrete patio was already removed), planting the new plants (I purchased them myself to save $ on his time), importing new DG and regrading the pre-existing DG area, and removing and replacing the majority of our good neighbor perimeter fencing. He also helped us create a wire trellis by extending the fence posts for the new vines to creep on. A landscape designer prepared a concept plan that we were working from that we subsequently made changes to as we went along, such as the trellis. The whole project took 5 days. Our new backyard looks fabulous, and is rat free! At least their colony has been relocated :) Simon was easy to work with, reliable, and very willing to help us bring our project closer to a cost we could afford. The project had some hiccups and surprises, as most projects of this scale do, but he was open to trying to resolve them quickly and did not nickel/dime us to account for changes. At the end, he and I discussed all of the changes and came to an agreement that was more than fair from my perspective. We will absolutely work with him again but next time, I will be more careful about walking thru all of the scope details and execution logistics with him in advance to minimize surprises after the project starts. read more
