Wow, it's been almost a year since I discovered Alex (aka. Alex van Gogh) and Lucky Thirteen's Barber Studio. I've kept my promise and went back and back and back and back. I first returned in Sept. My pink and purple were fading and I decided that for the fall I should go red! I met with Alex and showed and let her what I was looking for and she found the perfect red for me. And just like that I became a ginger. I loved the color and brightness of my hair. And received lots of compliments on it. So as winter neared my red began to disappear. I texted her my new idea of having candy cane hair, the same color from the fall with blonde highlights. Alex again worked her magic and poof I had hair that was bright and fun. I loved my Candy Cane Hair! Spring came around and again my hair color was fading. I text Alex and and stressed I wanted more highlights to lighten my hair for spring. Once again she delivered exactly what I wanted. She has the amazing gift with hair and hair color. Now summer is here and once again my color has faded. But this time time I saw the beauty of the fade and wanted to live out a childhood dream of having Jem's pink hair. But I also wanted to add some blue for contrast. And what Alex did took my breath away. She not only added pink and blue, but was able to fade in colors to have add some purple and green. And kept the awesome copper tone I had from the red. It turned out better than I expected, and I had high expectations. Alex is a superior artist when it comes to hair color and style. Each time it took around three hours. I couldn't ask for a better place to spend the that time. Staff and costumers are always friendly and made it a pleasant place to hang out. The staff enjoys talking and joking with one another and clearly are having a good time! Most of the customers left happy and are repeat costumers. Finally, a barber in Albuquerque that recognizes that beards, mustaches (and any facial hair, really) are part of a damn haircut. Without me asking, Dominic began applying shaving cream to my face and neck and whipped out the straight razor and I wanted to throw my arms up in praise to the Lord. But beyond just doing what EVERY EFFING BARBER SHOULD DO, Dominic gave a good haircut and demonstrated that he knew what he was doing. He asked what I wanted and I said a taper and a fade and he simply understood, NO HESITATION, NO 21 QUESTIONS. And then he proceeded to hook it up. The cut was on point, the fade was was done with care to make sure my head didn't look like a terrace in the Chinese countryside and the shape-up (another oft-overlooked practice in Burque) was done with precision. Then came the damn hot shave. The deal-sealer. I'll be back here for all my cuts now because dude earned my faith. Plus, it's right next to Clark's Pet Store and Sprouts, two other places I enjoy, so I'll be a regular. read more

I have been looking for a barber shop as I'm done with the smell of the acrylic nails that are done at the place I have been going. I thought a barber shop would not do nails so I could avoid the smell. I went to this place because it got many good ratings here on Yelp and I have to say they gave me a really superior haircut but have you ever just known a place is not for you? This place is young, urban and hip. All the barbers were reclined in their chairs playing games on their phones, all were tattooed and joking around with each other. The place felt like a club house. Cursing was ever present even though one of the staff had their very young daughter in the shop. I'm really glad this place is here for the young, the modern and the hip but I felt like Old Spice in a room full of Axe Body Spray. Great haircuts just not a good fit for me. read more

I have just moved back to Albuquerque from Southern California and am looking for a place that not only gives a classic cut but has some style as well. Lucky Thirteen fits both of those needs. I walked in with no wait time. Alex, my barber, make me feel comfortable immediately and asked several questions to make sure I got the cut I wanted. Jesse is the best barber in the city, period. I was never a loyal patron of a barber shop, going wherever, trying out a number of places throughout the country. But I didn't even realize I wasn't getting a great haircut until I came to Lucky 13's! Now I don't go anywhere else. Very unprofessional!! Walked in, on Monday, @ about 4pm shop closed @ 5. I literally saw one of the two barbers that was there, mouth the words, F@&k, and shook his head. They were watching straight outta Compton, full blast, and there were kids in the shop. Not only my kids, but others as well. Relaxed, friendly atmosphere, more like a club-house than a shop where folks are doing business. I'm a longhair, but the trendier haircuts are well-represented, all looking well-done. I get a beard trim and shave most times, and Anna really knows her business - she almost makes me pretty. The luxury of the hot towel and straight razor shave are well worth the $13 she charges for the whole thing. I would actually rate this a 2.5 stars. I was a walk-in and only had to wait a short time. The place is what you would expect for a barber in ABQ. The woman who cut my hair (never introduced self) did an OK job. A basic easy cut. I really can't complain because it was so cheap ($12.). I was looking for a really stylish cut and use of a straight razor. She was not skilled in fades/ blending/etc. I don't get all the rave reviews unless I got the wrong barber (which is likely). Uneven haircut. Was in and out of the chair in less than 10 min. A very fast haircut that showed afterwards. The other barbers were taking their time and doing a good job. I've been to this place (unfortunately) twice. The first time was great (which was the reason I returned). But I realized I was just lucky to get the guy working the third chair on the right (Richard?) the first time. When I tried to schedule an appointment over the phone with Richard the second time, I was told they don't schedule. Walk-ins only. Unluckily for me, I got the second guy on the right (which from Cooper S's review seems to be the same guy he had). Where to start with this guy? He was gruff and rude (I think this is the imagine this place is trying to convey). I showed him a picture of how I wanted my hair cut. He didn't even bother looking at it. I should have gotten up and left right then. (My mistake.) Then he said, "We know how to cute hair, bro," (I really should have left then!) which I found out was his way of saying, "I don't care how you want your hair cut, I'll cut it the way I want to." And he did. For I specifically asked, and showed him a photo, of a medium length haircut. I stressed, I don't want the currently fashionable "undercut" or "fade" haircut, because I don't like that style at all. But that's exactly how he cut my hair. It took two months for the sides to grow out to the length I like. I realized he had done me wrong after the first side (I could feel a breeze), but at that point, I was basically this guy's hostage. (Oh, he has a big tongue ring that makes him struggle to articulate certain words). Also, he was chatting with the owner (I know he's the owner, because he is in a YouTube video promoting his shop). They were talking about how they couldn't wait to get off work since it was Friday. Great! I think the owner needs to read a book on management. Also, though the first time I got a great haircut, there were adults in there cursing, which doesn't bother me, but there were several children in there at the time! No wonder the world is going to hell in a handbasket. So, if you want to experience such an unprofessional atmosphere (think the bikers from the original Mad Max gathered in a barber shop) while getting the sides of your head shaved by a guy who is not at all interested in how YOU want to look, go to Unlucky Thirteen's. Decidedly below average. I can't fathom how this place ever got to be so overrated. My haircut was just not very good. First off, the left side was noticeably shorter than the right. Then, the top just kind of poofs out, probably exacerbated by the first issue. I liked the straight razor finish, but precise lines cannot fix a bad haircut. If you go here, don't get Joseph. He's not a good barber, and does not understand what you tell him. I went in with a pretty decent haircut, with pomade so that he could tell exactly how I like it and how I comb it. Then I explained what I'd like in detail, and he went chop crazy, giving me a high and tight. I told him to watch out for my cowlick, and he cut it worse and shorter than ever before, so the cowlick is now much worse. I'm a master sergeant, and my wife tells me I look like I just got out of basic training. read more

I read the reviews for Lucky Thirteen's Barber Shop on this site and was hopeful that my first experience with someone else besides myself taming my beard would yield great results. I was gravely mistaken... Not only did I leave with my hair soaked and full of product but my beard was completely misshapen. Near the completion of my hair cut My barber handed me a mirror and only upon doing so did he say "ooh does the right side look a bit longer?" I went home and rewashed my hair trimming parts that were missed and spend a good 20-30 minutes on my beard fixing what was left. I'm going to be far more careful who I let handle trimming my facial hair from now on. read more
