There comes a time in the life of every punkrock/DIY/frugal/cheapskate when they look in the mirror and realize they need to suck it up and get a real/grown up/professional/stylish/GOOD haircut.
Go here, get one.
Life is too short to settle when you can make such an improvement so easily.
I'm out of my element there, as most of the haircuts of my life were at "Mom with the bowl over my head" salon, graduating to "self-mohawk over the sink at 3 AM." When the season changes I tend to freak out at the heat and pick a sleepless night to butcher my head in an impatient rush to get it all off. I'd had one mange too many though- I just wanted to look good (and did not want to look boring) but I didn't know where to start.
Most options in this town fall into either the discount camp (who wants to get the khaki of haircuts? WHY?!) or the eye-rolling hair pun-titled (I have not seen it, but I'd bet cash that "Hair's Looking At You, Kid" exists). I don't see the point in going through all that fuss just to pick something cheesy.
...okay, fine, I was stalling. I'm not a nervous person but this made me nervous. Hair is such a part of your identity; I didn't want to grow up. I was scared of snobs or being treated like a chore. I was scared of past haircuts that left me in hat for two weeks waiting for something to grow out.
Moxi sounds good- not too cheesy. I knew Dani from around as one of the super-cool. I can do this. Man-up, Levi. I still put it off.
I should not have worried here. Dani was funny, friendly, sympathetic- she really listened. She really got it. The environment is great looking but comfortable- I didn't feel pressure or out of place. The process was fun, discussing style with someone stylish who still understands classic looks and tailored it all specifically to me. There is conversation and pampering without the creepy service-industry feeling- real professionals who respect and are respected.
I'm not used to being treated so well- and I've gotten so many compliments. The whole thing kind of went to my head ... no pun intended, seriously. From the first discussion- which brought up things I hadn't even thought of or didn't know I could ask, to the final hair wash- which let me walk out refreshed and ready to crush the world in my killer new cut- everything about it made me wish I'd learned earlier to treat a haircut like the opportunity it really is.
I went back and took my daughter (age 11) for her first fancy haircut.
Nothing in life will ever beat seeing your little girl look in a mirror and see her young-adult future looking back. She looked beautiful and Moxi made her FEEL beautiful. She walked out carrying herself differently, seeing herself differently.
That is priceless. Thank you, Dani, thank you, Moxi. read more
