This review is LONG overdue... I have been getting my hair cut here for about 5 or more years now and I keep coming back because of the consistency and cool ass people and the relaxed environment. I've gotten my haircut by several Barbers in here and I've never really had a problem with the exception of one time a few years back and the barber was more than willing to fix my issue with no problems. I've been getting my hair cut and braided here for about 4 years specifically by my barber Latonya. She has been my goto when I need to get clean and fresh at any moment and has been very flexible with availability. The shop itself is always clean, the barbers friendly, and the conversations are always interesting. The environment is always respectful, and always has been and is another reason I enjoy coming here for hair cuts. If you need a place thats consistent, does good work, cool barbers, convenient and doesn't over book, get lucky and come to Luckys Barber and give them a chance. Now, it takes a lot for me to write a review. I received this haircut April 9th. When I got home and was finally able to really get under some good light. I was disappointed and immediately reached out to the barber Z. I feel like a licensed professional shouldn't have let this happen. The part that drove me here after so long is the fact that they claimed this happened because that hadn't eaten or drank any water all day? Is that really my fault? Is that any of business? And why is it an excuse for poor, what I feel is unskilled results like this....? Now although I was offered a refund, and a free cut. To which I refused both. I'm not sure why I would get back in you chair, and it's a possibility you didn't eat, and might tear it up again. I must have been another unlucky customer. Long wait with few customers present. The skin on my neck is rubbed raw from 10 minutes of repeated cutting and he finished it by putting rubbing alcohol on that area. Never had a barber do that.. 90 percent of time spent cutting my hair was spent on my neck line. He didn't even follow the directions I gave him about making it short, but a little longer in the front. i had to ask him to cut the front of my hair a second time. One of the things i was very very specific about was the fact that i didnt want any hair going down my shirt because I had to return to work and couldn't shower after the hair cut. Well at the end he removes the robe and cuts the back of my hair line again as if he hadnt spent enough time there already and of course that hair goes right down my back. Can't forget to mention that he stopped cutting my hair to take 2 phone calls, one of which he asked the girl to do a facetime with him. It's no wonder I got back late from an hour lunch. I get out of the chair and he says it'll be 25 dollars. Wtf?! It says 20 on the board and this was not a special haircut, just standard. I honestly feel like I got the you're not welcome here haircut special with a shake down price at the end. For 25 dollars and red irritated neck of course I'm not leaving a tip! all the movements he made with the blade seemed to be for show;he spent very little time cutting my actual hair and even less following the few instructions I gave him. Update: on the commute home I was smelling the scent of my dead grandmother. I realised the smell was on me and it was the hairspray they used on me. The men here are disgustingly sexist. I walked in on 2/26/2018 for a regular haircut and was refused a haircut. The reasoning? Because I was a woman. After removing my wig to show the barber what I wanted, he proceeded to rub his hands all over my head while asking if I was married. He went on a long rant about my hair was my "crown" and my "beauty" all while telling me he wouldn't cut it. He then asked the other barber "Snoop" if he would cut my hair; he said absolutely nothing. As I walked out visibly upset, the original barber I asked followed me out the shop trying (and failing) to justify his awful remarks, ending with a loud "IT'S NOT THAT I'M REFUSING YOU..." Ok let me start off by saying I grew out my hair for 3 years and just recently I got married and I needed to cut off the ponytail... In search of a barber in the Lake Merritt and Downtown Oakland areas is kind of hard as all these Hipster Chic $70 haircuts. I went three years without cutting my hair to save money and just to see how long I could get it. With a $70 ticket for a haircut I better get dinner with that shoot. Anyhow my friend Tyranny Allen told me to hit up Lucky and request LaTonya! Now I have been to many barbers high and low and swear she has super bars with the clippers and the straight edge. I Showed up this morning after looking online and this being my closest barber shop. I guess people say bad things about parking, but i biked there and there was a spot open in front when i showed up. i got a pretty standard buzz-cut by Jameel (unsure of spelling) it cost me 20 bucks, which is totally reasonable and we had a good time talking about current events, and some other things. I had made an appt for my husband at the barber around the corner, but when I dropped him off he walked into Lucky's by mistake. He told them that he had a 10:00 appt with Tim, but rather than tell him that he was in the wrong establishment, they proceeded to cut his hair. I walked in about 20 minutes later and was horrified. They had cut his bangs straight across. The Bettie Page look is not a good look for a guy. I pulled him out of there and proceeded to pay the guy for his time. When Darius was leaving his last shop, I told him just tell me where you're headed and I'm there. It took me a while to find a barber when I moved here from SoCal. I did my diligence, tried several barbers and finally came across Darius. The guy has skills. I originally came in for a line up and he used what he called my 'natural hair style' to give me a cut that couldn't have been cleaner. I thought he was joking about the hair style because I had a low cut. He wasn't. He takes every cut seriously. And I couldn't explain what he did to other barbers when I was out of town. DC hooked it up! I've been looking for a barber in Oakland for a minute and I may have just found one. I was a walk-in and DC happened to be available, which is great especially when many shops are closed on Mondays. I got a clean fade, line-up, and taper. He took the time to make sure my line and fade was right, making sure he didn't rush through my cut. The vibe is cool in the shop and I'll definitely come back. There's a nice flat screen inside and lots of conversation. City Center is close, too, if you need to get some food or anything first. Price range is average for Oakland, $20 for my fade, cash only like most barber shops. Like I said, I'd highly recommend it and I'm one who is picky about my barber and my service. Big ups to DC! It's all street parking, but I was already nearby so I just walked. Walk-ins accepted, but if you prefer an appointment go ahead and get the number from the individual barber. I got the worst haircut of my life today by B Tello who sits in the front corner of the store next to the door. I asked for a bald fade and the guy spend 80 % of the time on my hairline. He messed up my hairline which resulted in the worst cut I've ever had. After looking at it in the mirror I told him to stop as to not mess it up any further. He offered to give me half my money back but he didn't have proper change so I ended up paying 20 bucks for the worst cut in my life. read more

Hands down my favorite shop. I've lived in the bay area for about 3 years I've been all over the place looking for the right shop. I've gotten cuts in berkeley, SF, and all over oakland, but I have stuck with luckys for a long time now. I make my appointments with Jamil but I've gotten my hair cut by the several of the barbers there and have always left feeling fresh as hell. I've also asked for different styles of haircuts, ranging for high top fades, mullets(of the usher/kanyewest variety) parts, etc, to which this shop has always fulfilled/exceeded my expectations. This place also has the best vibes of any other shops I've been to. Alot of cool art is hanging up, music/tv is always playing, theres a coat rack and plenty of seating. Pretty spacious as well, which is nice. Theres also usually 4 or 5 barbers at a time so waiting usually isnt too bad if you wanna walk in with out a appointment. So my friends and I were about to get some cheap haircuts at some Asian place that made my friend's hair look like a hairy...erhm. For some reason though, this black dude walks out of nowhere and says that he can help us out with our, uhm, hair troubles. Come on now, what are the chances of a black dude walking into an Asian joint and offering to cut our hair? Pretty slim if you ask me. We were chasing his car like little fat kids trying to chase a Twinkie truck or something; man it was sad, but hey we wanted some fresh cuts. When we walked in, the place had a chill aroma and a welcoming atmosphere. Our barber, the black dude from our Asian joint, DC gave us the sexy treatment. You could tell this dude loved to cut hair because he was just using the bare razor and eyeballing every stroke. Three of us got the Taeyang cut, which was pretty damn good. Man, what am I saying? It was BOSS! The price was relatively normal at $20, but the work is great. DC always makes sure that your cut is fresh and he is funny as hell, and so is that other black guy, to whom I credit with officially dubbing our haircuts, "The Asian Persuasion." The CaliBay and its ring leader crew will definitely be back for some more "The Asian" cuts in the future. Many thanks for DC for our fresh cuts and for helping our friend find his hairline!
