I've been here several times over the years, but my most recent visit stood out for the exceptional service. We came as a group of 25 for some drinks and light bites. Even though the place was packed, the staff reserved a large table for us and handled everything smoothly. Super impressed with how well they managed such a big group! Their beer selection is fantastic--lots of variety including sours and ciders--and they also offer a full bar. I had a couple beers and an espresso martini, which was surprisingly good. I ordered the pretzels, which were just right: crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and served with two mustards--one spicy, one mild. My friends and I went for Wednesday trivia nights and it was so fun! The trivia lasts an hour or so, and the host and servers are so friendly. The overall vibes of the place are cute. I'm not much of a beer person but my friends liked the beer here. We got the veal schnitzel, mashed potatoes, and raspberry dessert. I would 100% come back for the dessert alone- it was super refreshing and creamy at the same time. The schnitzel was pretty good and the mashed potatoes were standard. Let Ludwig's die a natural death. My party of four adults had dinner there last night and it was pretty bad. For starters, the indoor portion of the restaurant was wide open with all doors open to the cold (55 F or 12 C) night air as we arrived just after sunset. Not accustomed to dining in such cold air I asked that the doors be closed and the heat be turned on but I had to ask three times before one of several doors was closed and no heat was ever supplied. The other doors left open. The servers didn't mind as they were moving around delivering food and beer and the cook in the kitchen was warmed by the stove. We are Americans of German descent and looked forward to a good meal. The food was flavorless. I had a pork Schnitzel, another had a chicken Schnitzel, another goulash, and the fourth sliders. No one liked their meal. No one commented that anything was good or tasty and we normally discuss our meals. Lack of enthusiasm for our meals resulted in us getting boxes to take home food perhaps for the dog. Service was very spotty as the wait staff seemed to give priority to the patrons outside who were warmed up with propane flamed outdoor heaters and were dressed warmly as though they were repeat patrons and knew what to expect. Mostly beer drinkers on the patio. To survive in the restaurant business in the Bay Area you have to be good because there is so much good competition. I've eaten hundreds of restaurant meals on Castro Street as I worked nearby for years. Always good food until Ludwig's. This place will die a natural death as customers fail to return and the word spreads about the poor quality of food. After the meal we kept looking for a waitress to give us our check so we could get out and warm up in the car. Eventually I approached someone at the cash register and learned that we "are supposed to know" that we go to the cash register at the bar to pay our bill. I know something about German food and I don't think Gisela, the owner, would approve of what was cooked for us. We won't be back. read more

This was a fast last minute idea while in the area, typed in vegan pub and this popped up first! We sat ourselves and it took a minute to get spotted but once he noticed, he came right over and helped us out, saying that he helped choose what vegan options to put in the menu and we devoured the beyond meat curry wurst with fries upon his recommendation. It wasn't too busy of a place and we sat outside enjoying the weather. They have plenty of beers to choose from, even took a shot to spruce up the rest of our afternoon. We will definitely return, I regret not coming back sooner as we cannot stop thinking about the curry fries and what else we will be able to eat there. Relaxed place to grab Vegan German food! Randomly found this while searching for unique vegan options and was very happy! Lovely outdoor space with plenty of shade for a warm spring afternoon. It was nice to see there were multiple options all at similar prices to the regular menu items. A little pricy but if we lived closer would probably hang there for a beer and smaller noshes. I got the Vegan Jägerschnitzel which was a great balance of sweet, umami and salty. My boyfriend got the Vegan Currywurst. Simple but balanced and not too heavy. Very attentive servers. While visiting Mountain View yesterday for the German Holiday Market, my friend and I stopped into Ludwig's Biergarten for a late lunch. It's was packed inside but we were lucky and a table was available. I got a vegetable soup (already have eaten some snacks at the market) which had pancake strips in it. Quite novel and the soup was tasty, light & hot! My friend enjoyed the Jaeger Schnitzel, veal breaded and fried. Both our food choices were delicious. We celebrated some good news by sharing a dessert platter. I liked the mini beignets and apple strudel with whipped cream! I'd like to give a shout out to the wait staff at Ludwig's because the restaurant was mobbed by couples, families with kids and groups of people indoors and outside. The staff handled all the demands with GRACE and worked non-stop ferrying dishes from the kitchen counter to tables, delivered steins of beer, refilled water glasses and cleaned up the mess of dishes on tables. If this had been a war, they deserved medals for maintaining their goodwill under stressful conditions. Terrific experience & terrific food. I plan to come back to try other dishes. Danke! We popped in here for a weekend brunch. I love German food so I was excited to try this place. For a German restaurant I was surprised to find a lot of non-German food on the lunch and brunch menu. We stuck to the more German options. We ordered: King's breakfast: 2 Weisswurst (Pork-Veal Sausage), Pretzel and Sweet Mustard, with sauerkraut. The sausage was very good. It was served in some kind of broth, which is not something I've seen before at a German restaurant. The sauerkraut was very good, with a hint of sweetness. The pretzel was tasteless, but the mustard helped amp up the flavor by adding some sweetness and texture from the seediness of the mustard. Chicken & Waffles: Chicken Schnitzel, waffles, and spicy honey The Chicken Schnitzel was dry. The waffles were excellent. The spicey honey was just barely drizzled on a corner of the waffle, so we asked for more of this sweet, sticky, and spicy goodness. Once the extra honey was added, the dish was more balanced and less dry. Service: The service was good at first but it took forever to get our bill at the end. Atmosphere: There are lots of large picnic tables outside under a covered patio. Dining indoors as well. Unfortunately on the day we went we were surrounded by flying visitors - bees. We spent much of the time trying to shoo them away from our meal. Maybe the bees came back for the honey, or perhaps they were German bees who wanted a taste of the Schnitzel, but it was more than a bit annoying. We ordered: Taste of Germany Flight Super cute beer mugs and a decent selection to try if you're not sure which to get Hibiscus Bloom Cocktail 4/5 Light and refreshing German Pretzel w sweet mustard 3.5/5 It was good, pretty standard pretzel. The mustard had a small kick to it which definitely stood out. Jagerschnitzel 5/5 This was massive and soo good. Super crunchy and the mushroom sauce and lingonberry jam were amazing. Ludwig's is a cute German beer garden in downtown Mountain View. I came here yesterday with a few friends who wanted to try this spot. It was a warm summer night, and I like how we snagged a table on the patio in the breeze! Nice selection of IPA's and German beers. I like how they also offer a smaller 0.3L size - since I am not a big beer drinker, and the calories do add up. This allowed me to try 2 different types of IPA's. The first one I sampled was the hazy IPA (#1) - had a nice kick to it but not my favorite. For my next smaller beer, I opted forthe West Coast IPA (#3 - Hop on the 9), which was delicious, refreshing, and perfect for sipping. The service was good - friendly staff and really, the location is very ideal! Convenient parking just a few blocks away. A solid 5 star rating!! Since we celebrated his birthday at a German restaurant in 2022, DJ has continued to pick beer gardens to celebrate his special occasions. Through yelp search, LUDWIG'S BIERGARTEN was chosen from the list of German places for our Father's Day, 2024 dinner. Located at the corner of Castro & California Streets in downtown Mountain View, when we drove up, we found street parking across the street right away, so didn't need to look to see if LUDWIG'S has its own private lot. The venue looks more modern than a traditional German beer garden, but you will still find communal tables in the small indoor dining room where the bar is as well as a festive outdoor area with big, long biergarten-style wooden tables and benches reminiscent of an eatery in Munich. This is a great place to watch a game while enjoying a cold, frosty beer in the company of others. LUDWIG'S serves up authentic German cuisine and, to DJ's delight, offers some VEGETARIAN/VEGAN items for non-carnivores. Below are some of the items that we ordered. DJ ordered a Hefeweizen that turned out to be flat and tasted like beer-flavoured water. Apparently, there was an issue with the beer tap. 6 Nürnberger Sausages ($21.00) - We ordered this to share like a family-style appetizer. I had to get some sausage, sauerkraut, and pretzel while here! I didn't expect these brats to be so skinny, though. Jäger Fries ($12.00) - The guys ordered this to share and practically licked the plate clean. Fish N Chips ($24.00) - This was Z's main dish which he said caused a stomach ache because the fried fish were soaking in a puddle of oil and dripped of oil when picked up. Though, the small piece that I had was good in taste as well as crunch. Tropical Bacon Dog ($17.00) - V ordered this with the omission of Pineapple; however, he still found pieces of the fruit on it...and still enjoyed it. The plate appeared small to him at first, but he found his meal to be filling. Jägerschnitzel ($28.50 + $1.00 for Chicken) - This was my entrée. I replaced the Homemade Spätzle with Mashed Potatoes. Can I tell you that I have been dreaming of and drooling over the schnitzel that I had in Austria that was served with lingonberry sauce many years ago? I couldn't find it anywhere until this night. Finally!! I found a schnitzel with lingonberry jam in the States! THANK YOU, LUDWIG'S!! The Mushroom Sauce and Breaded Cutlet were DELISH! Vegan Jägerschnitzel ($28.50) - Kudos to LUDWIG'S for offering a vegan version of Jägerschnitzel and extra bonus points to them for not adding an upcharge for veganizing! DJ super enjoyed this and stated that he couldn't tell that the dish was meatless and dairy-free. You can't get better than this! From the get-go, Sandrine impressed us with her stellar customer service. She was so warm, jovial and accommodating (a cutie, too). For the flat Hefeweizen and oily fried fish, she comped all of our beverages and Z's Fish N Chips. Everyone agreed that we had a wonderful time. I love Ludwig's! Like many locals, our hearts were broken when Bierhaus closed a few years back. And I'm so thrilled Ludwig's moved in. Came here for happy hour between 2:30pm - 5pm with one other person. We both got Lagers and shared a Happy Hour Sampler. Everything including the beer was light which I really enjoyed. This is one of my favorites. They were so kind and hospitable. They helped me with everything I needed to make my time go very smoothly. They were so accommodating. I had the salmon pancakes, so I think they're called. They were so delicious and flavorful. Absolutely beautifully presented. There was a group party happening at the time that I went. Stopped by for their happy hour after work as my friend and I were looking for a casual place to grab a drink and bite. Ludwig has happy hour until 5pm on weekdays and we made it just in time to order. We ended up just getting a lemonade radler each and the happy hour sampler. The radler was really good - I wanted something light and refreshing and it really hit the spot! The sampler platter comes with a pretzel, 2 spätzle croquettes, sausage bites and house pickles for $20. The food was ok but overall a bit lackluster. I wasn't a fan of the overly sweet mustard sauce that came with the pretzel and the sausage bites were cold when they arrived. Overall, not a bad place for drinks - classic cocktails, radlers, beer and wine are $3 off during happy hour. I would come back for just that but probably not for a full meal. read more

Every time I travel to San Jose to see my daughter, I have to go Ludwig's! Since my last visit, Ludwig's opened their new restaurant in Mountain View and closed the old one in downtown San Jose. The outside seating area is much more inviting at their new location! While it was a bit cool outside, they had plenty of heaters and we had to take off our jackets. Their menu is the same as it was at the San Jose location plus they do have seasonal items. This time around I had to have the Goulash. This was served with red cabbage and potato croquettes. The beef goulash was the best I have had in years, very tender and so yummy! I love the red cabbage the Ludwig's serves and have it every time I visit. The potato croquettes were a pleasant surprise with a nice crunch and smooth middle. Along with my goulash, I had a wonderful Glühwein! Having spent three years in Germany, I fell in love with the warmed mulled wine. On to dessert! I was so full that I almost passed on dessert but I am so glad I didn't! The best part of the jager fries was the melted cheese. On the sampler, my favorite was Kasekrainer Sausage; it had a nice spicy taste. The service was quick and prompt. As close as it gets to Germany this side of Mountain View. Huge jagerschnitzel in choice of pork, veal or chicken, in a buttery yummy mushroom sauce, served with spatzel and an olallieberry like jam. A dare I say, authentic sausage and a pretzel reminiscent of one that originated in a box that you heat in a microwave. The beer selection was vast and the service was minimal. A common refrain you could hear from the staff was, "We offer table service"albeit no server was in sight. Our server took our order and "promptly" returned 45 minutes later with our order. A star was given as it was Oktoberfest in Mountain View. A sign from the restaurant at Oktoberfest directed customers to the restaurant for pretzels, only to met by a bartender's response of, "We are not doing to go orders." This experience may have been a result of Oktoberfest, but I am unlikely to drop in, let alone run back to Ludwig's. read more

Food is tasty but so overpriced for what it is. Got a sausage plate with mashed potatoes and too much saurkraut and it cost damn near $25 dollars. Not a single entree on the menu was reasonably priced I would say for the food offered For 4 people (food, and 2 rounds of beer it was close to 300) I'm terms of taste, the sausage was good, mashed potatoes were super mid, and the sauerkraut was also just okay.
