I ordered crab rangoon, crispy noodles with sauce, sugar donuts, and two lunch combos; chicken fingers and spare ribs, and teriyaki beef and rice with egg rolls The rice had no flavor and tasted like straight up onions and the pork was fatty. On my nighttime drive back from the Tri State area, I got off the highway in the Cromwell/Middletown area around 9:30PM, figuring it was time for a late dinner pitstop. There are plenty of chains in the area, but I decided to check out the Chinese takeout place in the shopping plaza in back of the 99 Restaurant, KFC and McDonald's. Luen Hop is a typical looking strip plaza Chinese takeout restaurant with an open kitchen behind the counter and there are a few tables for eating in. I ordered the Combination 9: Roast Pork Lo Mein with Pork Fried Rice & Egg Roll ($6.95 plus tax). The food was cooked to order in just under 10 minutes. The good amount of hot food tasted pretty good, especially after driving for about 2 hours on busy CT highways.. The lo mein dish had a slightly sweet taste with plenty of tender roast pork and a few vegetables with soft noodles. The fried rice (yellow color) had roast pork cubes and fried onions with a firm texture. The egg roll was on the smaller side, but tasted very good and wrapper was not greasy, stuffed with a good balance of pork, cabbage, and seasonings for the filling. Overall, the Chinese food I had was solid good and tasty. I could not finish most of the dinner portion in one sitting (enough food for 2 people) and continued on my trek back to NH. read more

Luen Hop has the best tasting Chinese food that I've found in the Cromwell area. It's a small place in the old Blockbuster plaza but I've found that while going for the last 15 years and with changes in ownership, the flavor and freshness of the food has remained generally consistent. My favorites are the bone-in spare ribs and chicken and broccoli with garlic sauce. It's been a while since I've frequented the saucier popular options like general Tso's and sesame but I remember those being good in the past. They also make good rice. This was my first time ordering here and while the food was decent (hence the two stars instead of one) it will be my last due to the worst customer service I have ever received in my life! I placed my order for pick up through an app. Once I arrived I asked for my order and showed her my order through the app I placed it on, and she told me to wait 15 minutes. That was not an issue as sometimes apps take the money but the restaurant may not receive the order, so I figured that was the issue and patiently waited. Once my order was ready she told me the total and expected me to pay AGAIN. I explained to her how I already paid, that she confirmed my order when looking at my phone and that I wasn't going to pay twice for an order. She proceeds to take the bag and move it away from me and toward her, raising her voice (nearly yelling) explaining how I had to pay. I told her that a customer just picked up an order through the same app I ordered on. She then proceeds to grab her tablet, show my order wasn't there and at this point is yelling to the point where customers at least 20 feet away in the parking lot could hear. I at this point was done dealing with her inappropriate attitude and behavior so I asked for the total, and she wouldn't give it to me as she wanted to continue to berate me about how I was wrong. I even told her how I was not raising my voice at her (due to being a white woman I do not ever want to be perceived as a "Karen") and I would appreciate if she lowered her voice so I could give her the money "I owed" and be on my way. She tells me the total while continuing on, I told her here is your money now I will take my food and be on my way. The employee then continues to yell at me asking what I was going to do to which I said "I will write a review". As I'm leaving she proceeds to go to the back of the kitchen yelling about me. I proceeded to call the customer service of the app I ordered on , explained the situation and received a full refund. Therefore I am not writing this review because I had to pay twice for a meal; I am writing this review because I believe NOBODY should support this establishment as their reaction was to be quite frank: immature. During these rough times, I hope when you order out you're considering which small food buisnesses to give your money to, as there are many restaurants that deserve it much more than Luen Hop. read more

This is a standard Chinese restaurant in every way. There is a big faded overhead menu with pictures of food that no one ever looks at and the long paper menus people use a pencil to circle what they want. The tables are wobbly, none of the tables or chairs match, there are boxes stacked on the floor in random places, all things we expect at a take out Chinese restaurant. My middle daughter and I came in for lunch and put in an order for a general tso combination platter and boneless spare ribs. The food was exactly what we would expect. General tso was crispy with steamed broccoli, ribs were sweet, rice was fluffy and flavorful, and the egg roll was cooked perfectly. Nothing was over cooked, under cooked, overly greasy, or bland. We were very happy that the food was made the way we expected it to be. The service was very friendly and the family who runs the restaurant is extremely nice. This is a great place to pick up well cooked Chinese food when cooking at home isn't an option but I suggest bringing your food home if the atmosphere is going to be an issue. read more

Luen Hop reopened for takeout only on May 1, 2020. I had to run my car, which gave me an excuse to visit (at a late lunch time on a Wednesday). Maybe because I haven't had Chinese food since February, or maybe because it really is just that good, but this was the BEST ever! I had Hot and Sour Soup, Vegetable Lo Mein, and Sauteed Vegetables with Tofu (and white rice). Everything was excellent, even the plain white rice seemed special. I've been enjoying the leftovers, too. Here is the temporary (Covid-19) procedure: Call in your order, drive over. I paid in advance (over the phone) with my credit card but cash payment is also an option. Meet the nice lady at the door, which is half covered with a plastic sheet and a table. She hands you food under the plastic sheet and the credit card receipt to sign, or you pay with cash. Note that there are no freebies right now (except fortune cookies, of course). Their costs have increased, and I was just happy that they are open, and that the quality was terrific. Please help get the word out that they are open for business. read more

3/25/15 update: Must be new owners. The place is now dingy, unkept and the food is not very good. The ventilation is awful as well. It's so smoky inside that my eyes were burning for hours afterwards, not to mention my clothes smelling of old grease. Low mein was salty and the quality of the beef below average and tough. As a Middletown resident, relocated from the greater Waterbury area, I am in the search for some Chinese food in the area that is just as good as back in my hometown. Yesterday, after craving some sweet and sour chicken, I decided to try out Luen Hop. Since I don't have a menu, I went there to order and wait for my food. Service can be somewhat better. When I ordered and was rung up when my food was ready, the people did not seem thrilled to serve me. While I was waiting for my food, four people came to pick up theirs. Two seemed to be regulars as they received friendly service and were greeted promptly, while the other two received the same service that I got. Okay then.... Food-wise, I ordered the sweet and sour chicken combo (with pork fried rice and egg roll), fried wontons and white rice for the hubs. The food was ok, nothing spectacular. The fried rice was very bland but not greasy. Actually, the only good thing about the whole meal was that it was not greasy. That was it. Not sure if I would go back. I was not aware by reading previous reviews that this is primarily a take out shop. There are 3 tables for dining in, but no table service and you have to eat your food in the take out containers with plastic utensils. We were quite dismayed that they refused to give us tap water. I do not buy bottled water on principle, and the only other options was soda. That being said, the food was OK, nothing special. I liked that the pieces of vegetables (broccoli, mushroom, onions, bok choy, carrots) in the vegetable lo mein were a good size. My husband ordered a dish that was designated "hot and spicy" and I would judge it as very mildly spicy - so if you like spicy food, be sure to ask them to adjust it to your taste. read more

I have gone to Luen Hop for years and thought it was great but this time was so different. I always get the General Tsaos chicken with pork fried rice. This time the pork fried rice was tasteless and the chicken tasted weird. I ate half and threw the rest away. I thought I was done with this horrible place but than a few hours later I was in the bathroom sick as a dog. I than later had really really bad stomach pains. I had never felt anything like that from food. I was upset that be I spent the next entire day in the bathroom at least 6 times being sick. I guess it was food poisoning. This place has gone down hill, when I worked near by this was my weekly Chinese place, I would always get the house special duck and or and sometimes both the chicken and broccoli. Had it a few days ago terrible! I had the duck a chicken broccoli and chicken finger and a large pork fried rice. The rice was awful the pork inside tastes funny almost like a burnt oily Taste, the chicken fingers all spongy batter hardly any meat, worst of it all the the house duck it was 80 precent fried fat and skin a total of once pice had duck meat on it. I've been getting my takeout at Luen Hop for a few years now, and it seems like the quality has been steadily going downhill. In the last year, several of my orders have either been missing items, or incorrect items were placed in the takeout bag. The Lo Mein has become very salty, with an excessive amount of soy sauce added. Even the general Tso's chicken seems to be overly salty. The veggie Lo mein used to be full of fresh vegetables, and my last order barely had semblance of any vegetables in it. read more

The cheese wontons are to die for. Every Friday night is "Luen Hop and Movie Night" in our house. Any time we have "cheated" on Luen Hop - we immediately regret it. The food is pretty average. I always go here to buy the hot and sour soup and the fried rice. I once ordered the fried rice and the fried rice was all mushy and wet and disgusting. The general tso chicken is good it's pretty crunchy but the sauce is a tad bit too sweet.
