We bought some fresh seafood from Luken's while visiting Findlay Market yesterday. All of their poultry and seafood looked great and it was hard to decide on what to buy. We decided on some tuna, perch and rainbow trout. We just pulled the trout from the smoker and can't wait to try it later. They were friendly and quick. Just left there. I've been using Luken's for all my chicken and most of my fish for over 15 years but I'll never go back. I apparently didn't hear the man asked me "that it?" the first time I asked. He handled that by SCREAMING (like turned heads for several stores both directions) "THAT IT!!??!!" I was so flustered I stammered, yes. The woman next to me said how unbelieveably rude he was. When he gave me back my card, I said, "Screaming at me because I did not hear you is not a great way to earn my return business." He responded, "Oh that's okay. What did you spend, three dollars? I recently was looking for some Sushi grade fish, and heard Lukens was the place to go. I called to make sure they had some in stock before I headed up to the market, and the gentleman there said, "we have it, but i am going to go ahead and tell you no because I am not going to want to deal with it when you come in, we only cut it in the morning." In which I then replied, "well if I give you a heads up that I am coming in a few days, can you cut it for me that morning?" The gentleman was again reluctant to help. So I politely said thanks and hung up. If I were him I would have just said no first off instead of giving me the run around as to why he didn't want to help. My husband and I visit Luken's every week for their fresh selection of seafood and poultry. We buy our thanksgiving turkey there every year. It's the freshest turkey you can possibly get. It's local and slaughtered not too long before you pick it up. Not like your mass produced turkeys at chain stores. The fish and other seafood are always super fresh too. I came by late in the day and the gentleman working still rang me out after he had broken down his station, for two pounds of the ground dark turkey meat - not something you can find anywhere else. My four star rating is really a average here - I give their poultry a 5-star rating but their fish a 3-star. We started going to Findlay Market weekly this summer - and one of the big reasons for that was Luken's. Their Amish boneless-skinless chicken breasts are half the price of the ones at the supermarket and are huge! Their freshly ground turkey is also great and very reasonably priced. We bought a turkey breast from them for thanksgiving this year and were not disappointed. So apparently we like their poultry. When we started going to Findlay we would regularly buy their fish. But as weeks went by the fish seemed to be old (based mostly on color) and not of great quality. So we no longer choose to buy fish there - despite the alright prices the quality is just not what I'm looking for. read more

Friendly staff makes what could be an intimidating thing (shopping at a public market for meat) a pleasant one! It's still a bit overwhelming trying to get the attention of the few staff members at Luken's, but the wait is well worth it. The chicken breasts I buy from them are from free-range, vegetarian-fed, sans-hormone chickens from a local Amish... and they are surprisingly huge! Sure, it's pricier than Kroger but you get what you pay for! Luken's Seafood is one of the best places to find fresh seafood. Before finding Luken's at Findlay Market, we weren't able to find much fresh fish except salmon, tilapia and some catfish. But at Luken's we found a huge selection: tuna, grouper, mahi mahi, scallops, shrimp and more. We seem to end up there later on Saturday or Sunday afternoons and it's not difficult to find parking. Do yourself a favor and keep on walking. I have been to this stand in Findlay market several times in the past month and each time something was wrong. I ordered and paid for diver or sea scallops and when I got home I had bay scallops. I didn't complain I assumed it was a simple but disappointing mistake. Last week I got two pieces of sea bass. Yes it was cheaper than any where also but sometimes you get what you pay for or do you? We noticed that the person who was weighing our fish had her thumb on the scale. I didn't say anything but I weighed the fish when I got home and sure enough it was light and not to mention the two pieces they gave me were not even close in size or portion. The fish also had a very strong oder which is very unusual for Sea bass. Long story short I went to the market and brought this to the attention of the owner in a discreet manner and he acted like a fool. Shame on this place. Let's start off with if I could give zero stars I would. The owner Mike is a complete rude angry jerk. Stopped in today to simply give a FYI. And he started with a nasty attitude. Bought sea scallops 3 weeks ago, watched them pull and put into a container only to get home to find bay scallops. Last week we purchased sea bass. As the young lady was weighing the sea bass I noticed she had her thumb on the scale. I didn't say anything because I thought to myself maybe what I saw was wrong so when I got home I weighed the sea bass and what I saw was correct, she weighted the scale with her thumb. Bottom line I was not angry about it because people make mistakes. Therefore, we went done today as we normally do and was simply giving the owner a FYI. He wouldn't even listen to what we experienced and started with the attitude. Well I called him on it and said, wow starting off with an attitude when we are simply giving you a FYI, not asking you for anything. It's so others dont experience the same. Well his attitude increase. I will never purchase another thing from Luken's. Mike did us a favor. We went to Frank's Fish and Seafood. What a difference. He is knowledgeable about everything he sells and his fish and seafood is fresh. I'd shop with Frank's if I were you. Don't give your hard owned money to Mike at Luken's, he should not be in business. read more

I shop the market at least twice a week, and have several go to vendors. I want to buy chicken from Lukens, but now twice in a month, somewhere between what i order, and when they wrap it and hand it to me, I get home with something different from what I've ordered. I really like Luken's and the staff is friendly. I think prices are reasonable and it's become a regular stop when I head to Findlay.

I come here every week for fresh seafood and chicken. They have one of the widest selections of seafood in the city. Their prices are a bit higher than what you'll find at Kroger but the quality is that much better. For instance, The salmon at Luken always has good color and good marbling of fat whereas what you find at Kroger may look old. They'll often have more variety such as octopus, different type of shrimp, whole bass and skate. I even picked up Hamachi yesterday. The folks there are super friendly and they'll all have tried all of the fish so they can give you hints on how to prepare the fish if you're unsure. While they have got a decent fish selection, we are wondering about cost versus product. We love the salmon but other fish has left a little to be desired. It is one of the few places at Findlay where I don't feel like I can take my time and ask questions, which is rare for down there. I guess it depends on who helps you out. I have realized that the more they think you are going to spend, the more attentive they are and the better pieces of fish they will give you. Fish is an expensive propisition these days for the buyer and the seller, and I've noticed over the past few years that Luken's doesn't offer quite the variety they once did. The fast-moving favorites are there consistently, but less standard fare such as skate and grouper aren't always available. Still, the prices are fair, the quality is consistent, and the staff knows how to handle seafood, which is really the key. My days of playing underwater roulette with kids that were bagging groceries a few minutes earlier and don't know salmon from salmonella are done. I was in line for 20+ minutes only to witness a young man cut up some chicken, then handle cash with his gloved hand that was touching raw poultry. I moved here from the East coast, and, after going to a few different fish markets, this is the only place I will buy fish in Cincinnati. They handle it properly and have a good selection. That selection will vary, of course, because that's the way it works with good seafood. Me, I like the staff, even the surly ones, and I always get good service. it makes me sad to write this review. my husband and i have enjoyed luken's fish market's seafood since we moved here about 9 months ago. yesterday, my husband bought 2 swordfish steaks from their stall at findlay market and we each had one for dinner. they had a lot of classic signs of having gone bad. they were very dried out, rubbery and were yellow around the edges. the outsides were not tender and moist but resembled jerky. we must have been really hungry because we cooked and ate them anyway. my husband had food poisoning immediately following the meal. my guess is that i was just lucky and my steak was not contaminated. i've been hospitalized for food poisoning in the past and there's no doubt in my mind that's what he had. we both even left portions of our food because they just seemed off. My husband was not hospitalized and did not have testing done so there is no way i can prove it came from that piece of fish. at the same time, i consider myself a pretty intelligent person and i believe i know where it came from. I have left a message with the vendor and will keep yelp posted on any follow up. read more
