Review overview: Luke is great BUT there are a few negative things I must mention. I have been coming to Luke on and off for three years. If I want to grow my hair out long or dye it a crazy color I will go to another hairstylist. Once I get tired of growing my hair out or color experimenting I will come back and get Luke's incomparable BEAUTIFUL bob cut. He has gotten better at giving unsolicited advice or saying passive aggressive comments so I don't get anxiety coming into him anymore. I did get the whole spiel though when I first came. I'm thinking he's chilled out from all the Yelp reviews. My worst experience was when I wanted to dye my hair purple but he said it wasn't classy so he would give me something else. I don't care too much for classy but I know what I want so I was insulted. That time I spent over $100 on a color I could have done myself. I didn't go for a while after that but I got over it, experimented with other stylists and then came back to him for a bob. Best Bob haircut in the SFV for the best price! I feel so light and happy after. Luke is a master in the Bob haircut and I have to give him that. Although I have had some bad experiences with him I do end up missing my Clean bob haircut after awhile. I get so many compliments afterwards! The salon is never too busy which I love. You get in and out real quick. You'll see a few customers come in afterwards but the salon never gets overwhelmingly full. The plaza it's in isn't classy nor is the salon too much but I don't mind. I would recommend it to friends for a flawless Bob haircut. I wish this man the best. Oh also the other lovely woman working here does the best eyebrows. read more

While cutting my hair he gave me some tips on taking care of my hair and what causes the frizz. Since then, I feel that my hair looks and feels much better. Let me break it down for you before you read this review. 1. Insensitive 2. Doesn't take ownership of his work. 3. Complains about the bad reviews he has on yelp.. As a conversation. 4. It's time to get my hair did and I said to myself, no way I'm going back to Luke. I help off on writing this review thinking... eh, maybe I can handle the verbal insensitivity and just come back. But I thought to myself. When I do my hair, I want to feel good about getting my hair done. Not get ripped apart in what my hair should be. When i went in to get my hair did. He said to me "Ohhh no! You never want to put your hair up like that if you have a rounder face..." I said "well, I'm not gonna get my hair done to come Do my hair..." Main thing is, he doesn't have much sensitivity. He's blunt. He said "people think I'm calling them ugly, or not pretty" but I'm just trying To help people cover their double chins. I'm like "uhh... Okay." All he did was complain about other reviews on yelp. I honestly gave him an honest answer... "Listen, you're in a business to make people feel good. They come do their hair to relax and get their hair done. That's your job. You have to learn some sensitivity and make people just look good even if you have a different position on what you feel as though their hair should be." So, even though he said he wanted to do my hair a certain way, I said no, I want to do this. He said "okay, I'll do exactly as you say. I take no ownership of it." I said "that's fine." are all these reviews fake because when I got a haircut here, I was shocked and appalled at my terribly choppy hair that did not suit me at all!! I came here based on "good" reviews from yelp, hoping for some more layers and a nice trim a day before an event. To my HORROR Luke botched my hair completely and I felt like I paid 35$ for a haircut that I could have done myself..in the dark...with children's craft scissors. I don't like writing terrible reviews but after the trauma I was put through with this haircut, I have to be completely honest. I asked for Luke's opinion, and he said because my face is round, I can never have bangs. The only way to achieve a pretty face was to let my hair grow out and cover my face. e.g. girl from the Ring style. I don't deny I have a round face, but most of the time I am able to get haircuts that complement my big fat head, but Luke's haircut fell flat. Literally. He did not wash it, only straightened it and gave me a choppy dry layered cut, in which he cut of way more than I had asked for. None of my layers were blended, and it was OBVIOUS I had chunks of odd layers all over my head (many people have already commented on my terrible haircut already). It looks like I time warped into the 90's and asked for a 90's haircut. Additionally, he cut two of my friend's hair that day (we, being idiots decided to get our haircuts together) and WE ALL GOT THE SAME EXACT HAIRCUT!!! he tried to force short hair on my friend, even though she REFUSED, and she had to refuse him many times, before he relented. He said only women hairstylists provide poorly layered hair ,and that's how he knew my hair was cut by a woman, and I should wash my hair everyday because that's going to make it grow thick, and people brush their teeth everyday so it is the same thing, and asian women should never have brown hair or blonde hair, only the stereotypical mahogany....even though HE HAS BLONDE IN HIS HAIR!!! he tried to act like he has never seen yelp, has no idea what yelp is, but I'm pretty sure the photos are posted by he, himself. Terrible service. Showed him a picture of the haircut i want. He gave me a nasty attitude saying ''show me someone who can do that, and I will close my shop right now.'' Walked in and no one was there so he got to me right away. As soon as I showed him the haircut I want, he refused to do it and insisted a Bob, which is a specialty. The picture I showed was a bob but styled to look teased but he told me if I want that haircut, I should just go home and have my sister cut it because she's a professional. He kept pointing at the mannequin heads, which are the only one he knows to do. He was very rude and kept smirking every time I tell him what I would like. If it's not his way, he wouldn't do it. I figured to get a Bob since it was similar to the one I showed him. He DID NOT wash my hair before and just used a straightener to to straighten it. That's why all the pictures posted are so straight. I told him I wanted to color my hair and he said its not for me because I have dark skin. He said that his skin is light so that's why his Blond Tips work beautifully. He just shut down all my suggestions of the things I WANT. It's all about what HE WANTS. He also said he doesn't like my cheekbones, which I found insulting. He also kept trying to take my phone so he can take pictures. Also, he kept mentioning about Yelp, so he insists that people post about his "great and professional reputation". He also is prejudice about female hairdressers and will criticize your hairstyle If it was cut by a female last. Two stars because I didn't hate my haircut although I've gotten better ones. He also suggested a way for me to get my "messy" hairstyle that I originally wanted. But he refused to style it himself. He will only do the SAME EXACT cut that you see in the pictures. NOTHING ELSE. FINALLY!!!!!! Not since Nuvo salon in Encino (which sadly closed many years ago), have I really felt completely safe in the stylist hands. I have spent YEARS drifting from salon to salon trying to find a place that I could go and just say "fix my hair" and be confident that they would indeed fix my hair.... I have suffered through bad perms/dyes where my hair was falling out, layers that made my hair resemble Gilda Radner's "Rosanna Rosanna Danna" character on original SNL episodes, bangs that started halfway to the back of my head, and just a string of unfortunate cuts that where I got to the point where I just stopped going and the pony tail became my most common accessory. It got to the point where even with the straightening iron my hair resembled straw and was out of control... Since I was new to this side of town, I scoped out the salons on Yelp and came across Luke's salon. Seeing how the general consensus was good, I decided to call and see if they could fit me in. I called at 2pm. They were able to see me at 4pm the very same day. Score points there. I get there and I have to say... Luke is wonderful. He was very knowledgeable and immediately I felt at ease that my hair was in good hands. I have to say, it was such a welcome relief... I am extremely happy with my cut. My mom also got her hair done. For her, he dyed it all to a very natural black/brown and gave her auburn low-lights, which she loved! She also got her nails done here, and the manicurist was very friendly and took her time. For cut, color (2 times) & nails, my mom paid $80, which is such a great deal for the end result. I wanted something new, and I let him do whatever he wanted that would match my face, and I am very satisfied. He carefully and skillfully cut my hair. I also got some lowlights done, and they weren't as light as I wanted them to be. He happily re-did them for me, and I am in love with the new color. I am the type of girl who would cry if I got a bad haircut. My hair was up to my ass. I needed a haircut cuz my hair was just getting way too long so I yelped a hair salon in my area and found Luke's salon. I didn't make an appointment I just came in and there were two ladies ahead of me getting their hair done. The two ladies before me looked very satisfied with their hair and one lady told me she was going there for years. I got into the hot seat and showed Luke a picture of what I wanted. He told me that that picture was the style and not a hair cut and he showed me some pictures of haircuts that he would recommend for me to obtain the look that I wanted. He made me feel very comfortable in trusting him with my hair. I had a fear that he would cut too much but he worked with me and let me be in control of how short he was going to cut it. Horrible experience. FIND ANOTHER SALON. I took my mom to get her hair cut on my day off today. She chose this place because she wanted somewhere close. Her main hair stylist is out of town, and she wanted to be ready for an event this weekend. For myself, I have been getting my hair done at Planet Salon in Melrose for years by amazing and kind people. These are professionals trained by Aveda and has serviced celebrities. They are always willing to listen and hear what you want, therefore I have always thought other salons would have this same perspective. This place and person (Luke) was the FIRST time I experienced such IMPUDENT service at a hair salon that's not even up to par as Planet Salon. Luke was horrible to my mom. She's always had a specific haircut the past 40 years and he kept telling her that her head is flat and that her face shape and the hair style is not for her. He even made jokes by saying "go try to find another salon that can do that and I will go there myself." He continuously put her down. I could not sit there any longer. Granted, I stayed quiet the whole time to see if he would be nicer. I stood up next to the door and let my mother know we need to leave. To customers considering this place... there are other places. I have been going to Luke for 10 years now since I was a student at Cleveland High School. This is literally the only review I've written because I want the world to know Luke's greatness, and he asked me to write one years ago. His personality and bluntness may put you off or have you second guess at first, but this man, is a master of his craft. He doesn't keep any look books of styles to choose from, or at least when I originally went to him; he laughed when I asked him to see a book I could choose from. His philosophy is that every persons head is different and the style must be unique to each individual. He changed my life in regards to the hair. I'm not kidding, I used to go to chatchky barbers and I hated line ups- and my thick Punjabi hair was always a mess. But from the very first cut, I knew I'd be coming back to Luke. At least 6 of my direct friends circle have frequented Luke and have given him business over the last 10 years. Do not hesitate to commit to this man. He will have you looking your best through graduations, dates, interviews, and your greatest achievements. Luke is more than my hair stylist, he is a friend.
