Pretty neat place for good gelato that is open late during the season. They allow for two flavors in the small portion and are pretty generous with the scooping. I sampled both the vegan and non vegan toasted coconut before hand. I ended up choosing the non vegan toasted coconut and vanilla bean with hot fudge. It was mostly delicious but the last few bites were a bit ice-y. I wasn't sure why at first but saw that others had noted that perhaps it melted and refreezed. Given that I didn't notice this until my last few bites, I'll assume the best. The gelato wasn't necessarily the best I've had in terms of creaminess or flavor but it passed for being gelato. The lady at the counter was also quite friendly and did her best to sell her product. If I was in the area and needed gelato at 9:30pm, I'd drop by. But I wouldn't go out of my way for this gelato.

Delicious. Outdoor spot around the corner and down a side street from the main street. Cool music and plenty of seating. Amazing menu of ice cream, and beer and wine.

Cute little old school ice cream shack. They make their own gelato and sorbetto. I'm not sure about their ice cream. Friendly owners and staff, and they stay open until 9:30...which is later than other sweet shops on Main Street. They also happen to be right next door to Cafe Miranda, which is awesome.

We tried Lulu's recently. Very cute place. I tried the Blue berry gelato. It's creamy and excellent. I would recommend this place. Friendly staff...

Whenever I come up to Maine, the two things on my must eat list are lobsters and blueberries. I prefer my lobsters steamed with fresh drawn butter and my Maine blueberries churned into ice cream. At Lulu's, this little ice cream shack tucked away in an ally behind Fog Bar and Cafe does one of the finer renditions of fresh wild Maine blueberry ice cream. They allow flavors to be split so I decided to double up my local fruit bounty with a combination of Maine blueberry and Maine raspberry ice cream. Likely using milk churned from local cows as well, the sweetness of the fruit comes through as distinct notes of sweetness/tartness with textures from the fruit still palpable on the tongue with the rich velvety ice cream providing a lingering contrast. Like some of the other sophisticated flavors offered daily (bourbon vanilla, gingery ginger, key lime pie, to name a few), the flavor combinations tend to veer towards not being cloyingly sweet so young kids may not be their biggest fans. One of the fun things I derive out of writing these reviews is doing a little background research when I come across something which I'm not familiar, and I often pick up a random fun fact or two which stays with me. On this occasion, I noticed that in addition to root beer floats, they offered a second option called the Moxie float. Since inquiring minds want to know, I asked the lady behind the counter what that was all about, and it's a local popular drink called Moxie soda topped with one's choice of ice cream or gelato. (nerd alert) Digging further, I learned that Moxie is a popular local soda created in 1876 by a doctor in Massachusetts which contained gentian root extract, and was patented for its reported medicinal benefits for curing insomnia and other neurological conditions. The gentian root has a distinct bitter note, which unsurprisingly is why it is one of the key ingredients for Angiostura bitters which are commonly used in a variety of classic cocktails. It is not only the official soft drink of Maine but curiously is now part of the Kirin Holdings Company of Tokyo, Japan. How often does one have the opportunity to partake in a sophisticated ice cream float which boasts that kind of pedigree in the humblest of spaces? The final fun fact that I found most interesting was that the advertising slogans for Moxie soda came to create the neologism for the word moxie, which we use in everyday language to describe someone with force of courage, determination, or nerve. All this to say that this little dessert shack packs a lot of moxie dishing out some creative sophisticated frozen sweets amidst the straight-forward New England charm in Rockland, Maine. Pro-tip: bring cash since there may be a minimum for credit card transactions despite the fact that the yelp site states they accept cards.

Tasty. Friendly. Fast. The perfect complement after a meal at Miranda next door. Picnic table only but shaded and enhanced by light music and natural shade. Ditto to Yelperian cheers regarding uber-creative flavors - the mashup of maple and vanilla was like throwing a bowl of Rocky Road against a maple tree, then promiscuously licking the bark. There enough flavors here to present all forms of PDICA, aka: public displays of ice cream affection. Easy to miss, but well worth the 1/2 block walk off the main strip.

Great little ice cream shack with lovely seating area. Interesting flavors and toppings including vegan options. Dense creamy product -- they have their own product plus some from other sources. All options are made very clear. We were lucky to show up before the line! If one person orders something other than a cup or a cone (say a banana split or a shake) things can slow down rapidly. But on a beautiful summer night, it's all good.

On a sidestreet with a lot of art. Nice seating. I had chocolate salted Carmel ice cream. My friend had almond coconut gelato.

The strawberries and cream flavor was sweet, tangy, and quickly devoured, like a pint of farm fresh strawberries. A hidden gem in Rockland.

You may think you're going too far, but keep going. There is a sign above the doorway and a sandwich board to help get you there. As you get near the place the smell of chocolate fills the air. Once inside the door it's like you're surrounded by a big chocolate hug. Inside the door there are a number of shelves on your right with pre-packaged Bixby products, ready for purchase. Chocolates and bonbons and toffees of various flavors and varieties, as well as peanut brittles in a surprising number of flavors. Further into the establishment you're presented with displays of various items for sale. It's not just a retail store, but it's also the Bixby Chocolate factory, where their confectionary delights come to life. The day of our visit there was no activity other than retails sales. After a couple samples I came home with a large bag of chili beer peanut brittle. I know it sounds complicated, but it is AWESOME. The staff at Bixby knows their product. Got a question? The light and airy shop showcases the variety of their products, particularly their signature bonbons and Needhams (potato chocolates!). The chocolate is very high quality with a lot of flavor choices. Make sure to try some local flavor profiles like blueberry and maple. They also have ice cream in the shop! We'd just eaten so we had to miss that, but stocked up on chocolates, including a bag of Needhams, Allagash beer brittle, a dark chocolate sea salt bar, and four bon bons. Bixby does a beautiful job crafting the chocolates. The bonbons were truly pieces of art, and the chocolate bar had such a lovely and intricate sea life pattern on it that I almost didn't want to eat them. Our one wish was that they had more samples available, particularly for the unfamiliar flavors like the beer brittle and the Needhams, so folks know what they're getting before investing in a large bag of something. The factory and shop is right on Crockett Point in Rockland Harbor and is a gorgeous way to spend some time in Maine.

Since it was between breakfast and lunch we decided to stop into Atlantic Baking for a coffee and a pastry. Atlantic Baking is an unassuming shop right along what I'm going to consider a main street through Rockland. Not necessarily THE main street, but the Main-est we saw, so I'm sticking with that. Inside are several cases of pastries, breads, rolls, donuts and other baked goods that looked at me as if to say "I dare you". There was a cinnamon roll-ish thing that looked really good, and a Vanilla latte are what talked to me most. The staff (two young ladies on this morning) were busy hustling and, even with that, were helpful as they tried to keep taking care of customers. The vanilla latte was SUE-PERB, albeit a bit hot for my taste (had it let is cool first). As we sat having our halfway-between-breakfast-and-lunch-but-not-really-brunch snack there was a steady stream of customers, I'm guessing about 50/50 regulars and cruisers. Aside from pastries, coffees and teas, there's a cooler with canned/bottle beverages for the on-the-go beverage drinker. With as much activity as was going on during our visit you'd think it'd be difficult to keep clean, but there was a gentleman who came out frequently to take care of emptied tables, trash, etc. There are windows into the baking area, proving that they've got nothing to hide. Most everything is made on site with fresh, natural ingredients by people who take pride in what they do. Atlantic Baking is a charming place and a nice stop for a mid-morning snack

Further reading boasts that they've received multiple awards and accolades, though the last one seems to be from 6 years ago. (As they say, time changes everything.) After walking around the beautiful grounds and event spaces, the young hostess who greeted us told us confidently that we would not be disappointed. Such hype and a charming setting could be a set up for disappointment, and it was. The friendly and attentive waiter tried to recite the specials but had to check his notes and wasn't certain about some ingredients or pricing. We chose the toast special "with house-made bread, cheese and seasonal berries". Immediately after ordering it, he asked if we wanted the bread service as well. We just ordered the toast . . . It was thin bread spread with bland cheese, a few macerated strawberries, a drizzle of balsamic and some greens on top (because you always put balsamic glaze and a few greens on top at an Italian-inspired restaurant?) Cliché, bland and no way those were local strawberries this early in the season. I like a simple starter but that depends on having flavor. (We had better avocado toast for breakfast at Joe's Flat Iron Cafe in Skowhegan a few days before.) Next we shared the Farmer's Salad, appetizingly and nostalgically served in a hand-turned wooden bowl. The crisp, fresh greens were radicchio, frissé, and romaine with house croutons, shaved Parmesan, pork belly pieces and a tasty dressing. Good effort overall but 1) what local farm produced those greens in early May ("ultimate farm to table"?), 2) I'm over trendy, greasy and sinewy pork belly replacing good, crispy bacon and 3) It was a simple salad I could have made at home. Where was the wow? We again went with the seasonal special for the main - house-made ravioli stuffed with house-made ricotta, lobster pieces and vegetables in an herb infused oil. Sounded great, looked good but another bland disappointment. The vegetable on top (garnish?) was roasted pea shoots that were dry and stringy. Sautéed cabbage was mixed with the raviolis. A flavorless filler. But kudos for including locally foraged fiddle heads to add seasonal color and interest. The pasta was well made but the cheese filling was just bland. As was the colored but flavorless herb oil. (And now I understand why Italian cooks say cheese doesn't go with seafood.) We asked for salt, got a strange look but they brought it. I have to give them credit for carefully crafting an uplifting and appealing setting. The gardens, event buildings, main house and dining spaces have an intoxicating atmosphere. And they clearly have their fans. (A woman at the next table who was eavesdropping on our conversation about the pros and cons of the food pointedly said to us as she left so that others could hear "I hope they got your meal right".) Bless her heart. Fine to support the home team (Maine plates on her car) but it's good theater more than great food. Overhyped and too expensive for what it is.
