My wife and I have been celebrating as many anniversaries as we can at Primo. With the exception of 2020 and 2025 we haven't missed a year. However. This year made us realize that this is our last year. It was our 25th and we were looking forward to it. It started with the hostess who was annoyed that we showed up 7 minutes early for our reservation and told us they were running on time and to take a walk in the garden and come back at the exact time of our reservation. Which we did. We were seated by the manager who seemed impatient. He handed us the menus and walked off. A detail I didn't consider until I noticed that the other manger handed the menus and went over some drink specials and menu specials. Our server was nice in the beginning although seemingly distracted. We found out a little later they had a wedding party upstairs and the kitchen was behind. We didn't mind because we were there for the experience as much as the food. However as the night rolled on and things took longer and longer, the staff seemed more and more annoyed with us for ordering our meal. By the end of the meal, our server asked if we wanted a cheese or dessert service and seemed very annoyed when we said yes. At this point we were 2 1/2 hours in and they wanted us out. However, we were still there because it had taken so long for our service and food. In the end we split a strawberry shortcake, which was very good, I had a coffee, and we got out of there. They wanted us out and we didn't want to stay any more. What is sad is we have been celebrating our anniversary for 20 years there as often as we can and this, our 25th was the worse experience we have ever had and we won't return. Primo, "first". Interesting name to give your own restaurant. And the website doubles down by quoting the chef - "the ultimate Farm to Table experience." (Another superlative?) Further reading boasts that they've received multiple awards and accolades, though the last one seems to be from 6 years ago. (As they say, time changes everything.) After walking around the beautiful grounds and event spaces, the young hostess who greeted us told us confidently that we would not be disappointed. Such hype and a charming setting could be a set up for disappointment, and it was. The friendly and attentive waiter tried to recite the specials but had to check his notes and wasn't certain about some ingredients or pricing. We chose the toast special "with house-made bread, cheese and seasonal berries". Immediately after ordering it, he asked if we wanted the bread service as well. We just ordered the toast . . . It was thin bread spread with bland cheese, a few macerated strawberries, a drizzle of balsamic and some greens on top (because you always put balsamic glaze and a few greens on top at an Italian-inspired restaurant?) Cliché, bland and no way those were local strawberries this early in the season. I like a simple starter but that depends on having flavor. (We had better avocado toast for breakfast at Joe's Flat Iron Cafe in Skowhegan a few days before.) Next we shared the Farmer's Salad, appetizingly and nostalgically served in a hand-turned wooden bowl. The crisp, fresh greens were radicchio, frissé, and romaine with house croutons, shaved Parmesan, pork belly pieces and a tasty dressing. Good effort overall but 1) what local farm produced those greens in early May ("ultimate farm to table"?), 2) I'm over trendy, greasy and sinewy pork belly replacing good, crispy bacon and 3) It was a simple salad I could have made at home. Where was the wow? We again went with the seasonal special for the main - house-made ravioli stuffed with house-made ricotta, lobster pieces and vegetables in an herb infused oil. Sounded great, looked good but another bland disappointment. The vegetable on top (garnish?) was roasted pea shoots that were dry and stringy. Sautéed cabbage was mixed with the raviolis. A flavorless filler. But kudos for including locally foraged fiddle heads to add seasonal color and interest. The pasta was well made but the cheese filling was just bland. As was the colored but flavorless herb oil. (And now I understand why Italian cooks say cheese doesn't go with seafood.) We asked for salt, got a strange look but they brought it. I have to give them credit for carefully crafting an uplifting and appealing setting. The gardens, event buildings, main house and dining spaces have an intoxicating atmosphere. And they clearly have their fans. (A woman at the next table who was eavesdropping on our conversation about the pros and cons of the food pointedly said to us as she left so that others could hear "I hope they got your meal right".) Bless her heart. Fine to support the home team (Maine plates on her car) but it's good theater more than great food. Overhyped and too expensive for what it is. read more

Let me preface this review to reflect this visit only. Primo is a 4-5 star restaurant, but the management fell short during this visit. We ate there on a Friday night and all started well: good waiter, delicious appetizers, then... Main courses didn't come for more than an hour. We were told there was a wedding party and they had backed up the kitchen, our orders would arrive shortly. They did not. No apology from host or basket of bread, extra appetizers, nothing. We even had to order bread to tide us over for which we were charged. For an establishment of this caliber, this is not to be expected or tolerated. If they could not accommodate s wedding party and their regular diners, they should not have booked a large party, or not booked tables during this time. They should have made this right with guests, who should not have to wait an hour between courses. I was embarrassed to take my out of town guests to our local fine-dining restaurant and be treated so flippantly. They even charged us for the dessert for one of celebrating their birthday. I was so excited to try this restaurant because of everyone raving it but I was a little disappointed. They did some things right but def miss the mark on quite a few things. First off we had a reservation for 7:30 and we didn't get seated till 7:50 and had to wait awkwardly in a small entry space. Then we were seated and it took a while for our server to get our drinks. We got the octopus appetizer and it was just okay, nothing special. We got our entrees and they were very good portion sizes which I like especially for the price. I got the swordfish which was very tasty but still not mind blowing. We got a dessert and they did our happy birthday on it for her but that was it. We were here for my fiancés birthday and holy moly it was fantastic. We ended up at the counter, which had its own special menu for the night. We tried the chicharrones and foie gras for an appetizer. The chicharrones were salt and vinegar flavored - the vinegar was a bit aggressive but otherwise they were beautifully made. The foie gras was impeccable - I had never had it before. The bread was almost French toast esque. It could've easily been heavy but it was perfect. We had an array of mains & desserts. I had the pork saltimbocca. Everything about it was perfect. I had the zeppole and lemon curd meringue & honey berry jam donut. The zeppole was the lightest fried item I've ever had. The donut mixed with the meringue, curd and jam, went perfectly together. Our waitress was also absolutely incredible. She joked around with us and was so attentive even with having to deal with a private party. We ended up here on accident after landing in the area after a long drive. The place looked so cute! Had a fire pit going for ambiance and smelled rustic and cozy. They didn't have a seat for us right away but brought us a glass of wine. Lovely! We were seated in the bar area which we loved as we like the lively ambiance. Our meal overall was a B+. We had wine, which they poured to a 6oz exact level, which to a wine drinker is annoying. We had the pizza for app which was good and salad which was sandy and we sent back. This is the most delicious meal my husband and I have had while here in Maine! The entire place is amazingly well-run... chef's imagination, kitchen's capability, speed and accuracy, the hostess and waitstaff, the cozy, friendly feel. Rachel served us and was wonderfully knowledgeable, kind and seemed thoroughly unflappable -- a perfect skill set for the role. The food? Delicious imaginative salads to start with clearly garden-to-table ingredients... fresh fennel, escarole, heirloom tomatoes and a creative splash of blueberries. My husband had the saltimbocca and I had the evening special, Squid Ink Pasta topped with an incredibly fresh marinara and crab meat. We didn't skip dessert and were glad of it! Primo has been on my list of restaurants to visit for quite some time now due to the fact that the chef has received numerous accolades and they are a farm to table restaurant. To celebrate the holidays with my partner, we decided to finally make it to Primo! My partner and I had made a reservation for 5:45, which I highly suggest doing, as when the doors open, people flood into the restaurant with reservations and others hoping that they can get in without one. Upon observation, the hopefuls without reservations were quickly turned away. In any case, my partner and I got to the venue at 5pm, knowing quite well that we were ahead of our reservation time. We figured we would give it a shot to see if maybe we could grab a drink or hang out somewhere until our table was ready. Once we made it to the host station, we explained that we knew we were early but that we were hoping to grab a drink in the meantime. The host seemed to be a bit dismissive and responded by saying, "Come back during your reservation time, because we are back to back right now." My partner and I slowly turned away and walked back into our car to wait out the time. We reentered the facility at our reservation time, and we were seated in the dining room. I wouldn't say the ambiance of the dining room was anything to be excited about...however, after looking at pictures, it seems like the upstairs has more of a quaint, rustic vibe to it. The dining room was a bit sterile, so if you plan on going, I would ask to be seated upstairs. We were quickly greeted by our waitress, however it was short lived because the server for the table next to us needed to deliver drinks to the table, so our waitress had to move out of the way for him to deliver the drinks, and then she proceeded to take our drink order after he was done. Again, not a HUGE deal...it just felt awkward, especially due to the notoriaty of the establishment. My partner and I received our drinks, which were fine. I got a Primo Martini while my partner got a tequila-based drink, which I forget the name of. As far as the menu, it is pretty expansive with a variety of options. We started with the octopus appetizer, which was large in size and super flavorful! I would highly recommend. My partner and I each ordered the porcini taggliatelle with scallops. Again portion was large...but flavors were very subdued and lacked seasoning. For a dish that was expensive...it unfortunately did not measure up. On top of the food, our service for the rest of the evening was a bit lackluster. We wanted to end the night with a glass of wine, and our waitress had never checked in on us, so we opted for the check. Once we got the check, it took 30 minutes for our waitress to notice that we had been waiting to cash out. Overall, we had a "meh" experience at Primo. Would I potentially go back? Sure? We had a 5:30 reservation that lingered past 8:00-crazy. We ordered the bread service, 4 apps, 2 half orders of pasta, 2 entrees and 2 desserts for the 2 of us. The pork belly special was so chewy it was almost inedible. Loved my salad of red lettuces and gemelli. Up until the pasta course, things were flowing rather quickly out of the kitchen... and then there was some sort of phenomenon where for 45 minutes not one person in the dining room had food. it was crrippling. The server had no idea what happened but it knocked the wind out of our sails....She comped our 2 cappaccinos on our $500 check for the two of us! Had an absolutely amazing dining experience here about a month ago with my significant other The staff was very accommodating to a late night arrival and was attentive to us all the way to the end of dinner with desert and coffe/tea. Visiting Primo was one of the things I was most excited about on our honeymoon, and the only reason we stayed in Rockland for a night. I was expecting to absolutely love the food here, but unfortunately pretty much everything fell short. I will say the salad was lovely, vibrant, and fresh. The fried squash blossoms were very good. But the two pastas and the pork saltimbocca just missed the mark. I was honestly too bummed out to even try dessert. We did order bread service and they charged us $8 - $4 per person. I have never seen a restaurant do this before. Almost seems like a way to nickel and dime customers who are already paying a pretty penny to eat here. The ambiance inside was a little ... strange. It seemed much more casual for the type of magical experience I was expecting. The outdoor area is absolutely gorgeous and I loved being able to see the garden and the chickens. The menu of the day featured multiple items fresh from the garden in seasonal combinations that were unique and intriguing! We were lucky enough to get a reservation on the second day they were open for the season and wow -- it sure does live up to the hype. They have a number of hand crafted cocktails. We tried the You're My Boy, Blue and Zenzero. Both were unique and enjoyable. Zenzero was very ginger-y if that's your vibe. We were pleasantly surprised by the amuse bouche from the chef - a very tasty winter squash soup. The spring tonic soup was very refreshing, as was the farm salad with green goddess dressing. The menu was a quintessential farm-to-table menu. You can tell lots of thought went into each dish. I'm usually the type of person to modify my order to my liking, but not here -- I wanted to enjoy everything the way the chef intended. I have never seen "skate wing" on a menu (had to google it). I was apprehensive about eating stingray, but our server Jeffrey assured me it was delicious. And boy, was he right! It reminded me of a crossover between a flaky white fish and scallops. We also got the Branzino (filleted at the table) and two pasta dishes. Everything was incredible. Cozy and casual ambience. Slightly loud - we could easily hear the conversations at the other three tables in our room. Server was friendly and attentive. Dinner began with a crispy Cacio e Pepe amuse bouche and bread service with 3 fresh baked options. Focaccia, sourdough and semolina sesame breads. All delicious. Our dishes were amazingly tasty. We split the Primo Red salad with tender reds and greens and a delicious white bean puree. We then shared the halibut with mussels and the scallops over spring pea risotto. The fish and seafood were perfectly prepared. The risotto was a bit heavy both portion and density for the scallop dish, but overall generous portions for the entrees. Each detail of the dishes was tasty though the risotto was disappointing - under seasoned. Many excellent points of the evening and the food would get 4.5 stars. But the service while attentive felt too present, and the ambience was distracting from the overall experience. Restaurant is quite mean spirited and unsympathetic to their neighbors. They burn fires and nightly cookouts , smell up the entire neighborhood with smoke and meat smells. It makes many in the area have to keep ALL their windows closed until early morning hours. Thus, neighbors suffocate in their houses in the heat of summer, as well as spring and fall. For some reason, they Primos manages to refrain from this behavior during winter months. read more

I never review restaurants but we just had an awful experience at Primo. We went for the Sunday oyster and small plate special. Most of the food was good with the exception of one very bad oyster. I had already eaten two and they were fine but my third was spoiled, not just a little "off", but disgusting. The waitress apologized and took them back but then informed me that the chef said there was nothing wrong with it; they are wild oysters and aren't as uniform as farmed ones. The waitress said he can smell a spoiled oyster and this one was fine. It obviously wasn't! If they had just apologized and left it at that I would have been fine. They did take the oysters off my tab but nothing more. It was as if they were doing me a favor. I would think a restaurant with such a great reputation would go out of their way to satisfy a customer with a legitimate issue but that was not the case. read more

The fish(halibut) had a fishy smell that any chef worth his/her salt would notice and never send out. Try husband ate it any way because he didn't want to wait and ruin the mood. This was supposed to be a key highlight of our trip to Maine, but was easily the biggest let down. We had made this reservation a month in advance to celebrate our engagement with the impression that Primo was the preimer fine-dining attraction in the Camden/Rockland area. After having dined at Primo, I can confidently say that THIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN A TOURIST TRAP. Our server, Sarah M was absolutely horrendous, I have received better service at Chili's. I was a server for 3+ years throughout college and I understand that things can go wrong outside of the server's control, but frankly this was unnacceptable. Despite spending over $250 on a dinner for 2, Sarah M would blatantly try to upsell at every opportunity, deliberately trying to guilt us into feeling we weren't spending enough. Within 30 seconds of our food arriving and as we were chewing, Sarah M rushed to our table to suggest a wine pairing for my fiance's dish. Funny thing was that my fiance had already ordered a drink which was mostly full next to her. She never came to check on if we liked the food. On the topic of the food, our meal was not reflective of a "fine dining" establishment. The salad we ordered was genuinely tasty, but all main dishes were extremely dissapointing. My fiance's $48 duck dish was tough and neither of us could finish it. The cherry on top was when our wonderful server Sarah M brought over small chocolates (given to every guest) presented on a plate with the writing "Happy Anniversery". Sarah M's excuse was that the "chef had messed it up". As I mentioned previously, I was a server for 3+ years and I was mindblown that Sarah M couldn't take the minimal effort to replate with the proper "Happy Engagement". Again, this is supposed to be a fine dining establishment. We had made the reservation a month in advance to celebrate our engagement and Sarah M couldn't make the minute effort to replate properly. Do not fall for the trap, Primo is nothing more than a gimmick. Over-priced food under the guise of "farm to table" dining. Had an early reservation on a Wednesday in June 2023 at Primo. Amazing experience and one of our top 5-10 in the last 20 years. Started with two excellent cocktails. I had the Year of the Pig and my wife had the Rubh-y Slipper, both excellent. To start had the excellent bread service, more than worth the price and the amuse bouche (lobster bisque), followed by the fresher than fresh farm salad, croutons were amazing, and the scallop special with sea beans and crispy seaweed on top of a purée. It was my favorite dish of the night! For entrees, I had the New York Strip and my wife had the bluefin which she said was excellent. Steak was perfectly cooked and mushrooms on the dish were amazing and I enjoyed it with a great Primitivo recommended by our waiter. We also split a special risotto with fiddleheads and fava beans, which was a very close second as favorite of the night. Finished with the profiterole special and a couple of coffee cocktails. The service is impeccable. Each server we've had has been very professional and attentive. One guy during the fall was a bit nervous and uncomfortable but I get that. The food is outstanding. Fresh, seasonal and thoughtful. I try to order things out of my comfort zone which usually blows me away . Once in a while I like a familiar steak and that has left me craving a better steak. Nick and Toni's in East Hampton is still the best steak I ever had. Even better than the Palm. We have a special needs sister and Primo has always been accommodating and compassionate. From appetizers to entrees, bread to dessert. The selections for ports and desserts-cordials are fabulous. Make Primo a part of your visit to the mid coast. You won't be disappointed read more

(i stopped eating at this establishment years ago due to consistent food poisoning however this was a friends birthday gathering; i had no choice in the matter they made the reservation. there are wonderful other restaurants in the area your money and time would be better spent at) there was under ten of us, 3 of us ordered fish. all my friends remarked how disgusting the fish smelt and taste. no one ate the fish (other than me) and handed it back to the waiter. the waiter didn't comment on the completely untouched plates. my company was kind, not trying to send stuff back during this clearly chaotic and busy period during the night. due to this nothing was asked to be taken off the bill or replaced. (the place was in disarray as always). since i was the only one to eat the fish (my biggest mistake) i spent the next two days throwing up and debating an ER visit. every-time i go to this "restaurant" i wind up terribly sick. the place has been going down for the last 5-7 years but boy. i've never had such a terrible experience that i felt the need to write a review. as previously mentioned i stopped eating at this establishment because they are constantly giving the regulars food poisoning i can't imagine how little effort they put into the tourists dining experience. there's a reason the usual regulars are dwindling. i feel terrible for the people who drive hours just to eat at the place, i can't imagine how their experience is and how they are treated. -an ex regular guest read more
