Luma is a great spot hidden in Mt. Lebanon. Since it isn't on the main strip, it may be easy to pass by. However, please don't or you are missing out. They have one of the best creamy espresso martinis I've had and I order it every time I go. The food is also delicious. I've never had such a flavorful pork chop before! (Unfortunately didn't get a pic of if) they also have excellent service my friend group specifically requests Payton as our server as she is extremely friendly. I have been here many times before over the years as a Mount Lebanon local, it's always the same... receiving an adequate and overpriced meal, portions have seemed to get smaller and smaller over the last few years, and the food and service is far from superb. Most recently I walked in after a long, hard days work at a law firm. As I sat down at the bar hoping to order a simple martini, the female manager immediately and abruptly approached me not with a "Hello, how are you doing this evening?", but with "We have a party of two coming in so you cannot sit there longer than 40 minutes." I replied "That's fine, thank you. I ordered my one martini, which the male bartender did not know how to make, and therefore had to ask the owner's daughter for direction. As I asked for the bill to leave, I was approached once again by the owner telling me I was now allowed to stay longer as the aforementioned party never showed up. No thank you. The service is always very slow, the food underwhelming, and the management very much present and dominating really taking away from a relaxing, quiet, and enjoyable dinner and drinks experience. read more

Our server was very friendly and helpful with menu suggestions and explaining the specials. We both had fish as our main entrees and tried the Brussel sprouts for our appetizer. I thought everything was very good! There was a long wait between our app and entrees but the waitress checked in several times and offered us more bread and oil if we wanted it. Very good meal and service at Luma on a Thursday night. The patio was very nice, although the neighboring buildings and parking lot are not attractive, but the patio dining is great for Covid. The crab entree was enormous, very fresh, and delicious, with wonderful rice pilaf and green beans. The duck was amazing, tender with a crispy skin. I substituted couscous for the rice. The indoor dining has tables spaced too closely for my comfort. All the waitstaff wore mask but not gloves. Would recommend it! read more

You must check out the back patio too! In colder temps, don't worry, they have you covered. Roll down plastic coverings, heaters and they give you a little blanket. It's like your own private outdoor dining. Like two different places :) Only negative, for me personally, it can get a little loud indoors when crowded BUT everything else outweighs that. If you are looking for a relaxing dinner, do not eat at this restaurant. Management inconsistently reinforces their non-published rule that diners must complete their meal and leave within two hours. I have been in this restaurant when it was busy and exceeded the two hour limit and was not told to leave after two hours but at my last visit, our table of four was rudely interrupted while we were talking and told we could move to the bar but we had exceeded the two hours. Our reservation was at 4 and it was six minutes past six. The request was surprising because there were several empty tables and no one waiting to be seated. We were not politely interrupted. The manager did not ask if we enjoyed our meal and when we were caught off guard and took several minutes to collect our belongings to leave, the manager continued to berate us in a manner that was embarrassing. There are over 4,000 eating establishments in the Pittsburgh area. This restaurant must be one of the fortunate ones that does not need to worry about customer retention. read more

I have been dining at Luma's since they have been in business. The service is as incredible as their food. Start off with one of their handcrafted cocktails. I love a French 75 after a long week (up or on the rocks you choose-I prefer up). I highly recommend the baked Brie (non fried pita to save on calories) and crab cakes as a starter. Jumbo lump crab with a delicious remoulade sauce-doesn't disappoint. Followed by the house salad or their creamy mushroom soup. For your entree you can't go wrong with their flavorful and crispy stacked chicken. Please save room for dessert their sticky toffee it's the best in the business. More like 3 1/2 stars. We tried this place for restaurant week. It is a cute little place that seemed to have a regular clientele. Staff was attentive and friendly. We had their special 3 course meal at $45pp. The complimentary fresh bread and olive oil was great. Shrimp Lobster bisque was A plus! Zucchini Roulade was amazing (first time I ever had one). However, the Filet Mignon was average; it was cooked perfect but was bland and did not melt in your mouth as usual filets do for us. Cod crusted with horseradish and crab was also just okay; I barely tasted the horseradish or crab. It ended up like breaded cod in a creamy sauce, not what I expected. Both were obviously made fresh to order, but they just lacked distinctive flavors. We both closed with a brownie covered in dark chocolate sauce and ice cream; it was a good ending. I just love this hidden gem in a residential part of Mt. Lebanon. (It's also next door to Hitchhiker Brewery.) I haven't been here (or to their location in Aspinwall) in over a decade. I decided to try take out from here as I recall them having some really good food. I was also looking for quality food and willing to pay a bit more. (Uber Eats doesn't have the best selection of quality food for my area which is a bummer.) Their food and takeout (through Uber Eats) did not disappoint! It was packaged well and most containers were recyclable which is important to me. The food was warm despite coming from 20 mins away. I started with the zucchini fries and although they look a bit messy on my plate, don't let that fool you since they were delicious! The horseradish sauce/dip was so tasty and mild. The marinara was good too, but I couldn't get enough of the horseradish sauce/dip! The house salad was very fresh and I like that they put some quality veggies and cheese on it. The homemade herb vinaigrette was also mild but very tasty. The main meal was enough for two dinners! Two perfectly breaded and cooked organic chicken breasts with a mixed grain couscous and sautéed spinach and mushrooms with a light cream sauce. My family and I had dinner there tonight for my and my aunt's birthdays. I haven't been there in quite some time, and I have to say, the vibe is kind of meh, the service is super slow, and the food is good but not fabulous. It was definitely slow for a Wednesday night. But there wasn't even anyone just hanging out at the bar. The lights weren't dimmed like they used to be, there was no music playing. I was just left feeling like this wasn't the same place. And I guess that might be part of the reason for such a lag in customers. Our server was very nice, but from the time we got there to the time we ordered was at least 20 minutes, and maybe more. She gave us water, then it was 10 minutes between water and asking if we wanted something other than water, and then there was another ten minutes between getting our other drinks and putting in our order. Once we put in the order, it was about 25 minutes to get the food, but at least it was worth the wait. Everything was cooked to order, and no one had any complaints. But then of course it took an exponential amount of time to get the check. So would I go back? Sure. Any time soon? Eh, probably not. It lacked the luster that it once had. read more

We had a wonderful dining experience here recently. The restaurant decor is very calming and elegant. Even though the place was busy it was not too noisy. Our server was attentive but not intrusive. They have a nice selection of specialty cocktails. I loved the grapefruit cocktail - it was summer in a cocktail glass! We had the zuccini, the buffalo cauflower, and the brussel sprouts for appetizers. All were great but I liked the zuccini the best. I got the cod on a bed of spinach, quinoa, and potato hash. I loved it! It was perfectly done. My dining partners got salads which looked yummy and appeared to be very crisp and fresh. One of us had the filet on a bed of spinach pasta. She said it was cooked perfectly. My other dining partner got the crab cakes and I had a little bit of menu envy where someone else's dinner looks really good and you kinda wish you had gotten it instead! This restaurant is tucked in to a fun corner off of Castle Shannon Blvd, Mt. Lebanon. It was good but I was expecting more based on the rating. The bread and olive oil for dipping was very good although it needed salt (you have to ask for it). I ordered the beet salad, there were not that many beets and the pecans were plain. They could have seasoned them or candied them to make it more exciting. I got the cod dish and it was pretty good, maybe a little over. They do pour a nice glass of wine, so thumbs up on that front. It was very busy. They have a small bar and back outside patio that was very cute. My server was very good. It's a joint worth checking out. read more

Luma has been on my list of restaurants to try for a while, but my first experience there did not leave a lasting impression. Not an entirely positive one, anyway. Although the space was intimate and romantic, the food didn't really create an experience that matched the fancy restaurant feel (and not to mention prices). The hubby and I were here for restaurant week so we had the opportunity to sample at slightly lower prices. The calamari was probably my favorite dish of the night; it was light, crispy, and flavorful. I especially liked the peppers in the dish. The most disappointing part of our dinner was our entrees. My cod dish was incredibly bland: almost as if they didn't use any salt whatsoever. The cod wasn't seasoned, served alongside unseasoned cous cous and asparagus, again unseasoned. My husband's chicken dish was dry, which our guess would've cost around $20 normally and for that kind of price, you'd expect the chicken to be prepared properly, right? Unfortunately our desserts weren't memorable and didn't quite redeem the poor quality of our entrees, but definitely were a slight step higher. Well, at least they have 1/2 off wine on Wednesday's. I will probably be back for that but I won't be giving dinner a try there again anytime soon. read more

What's Luma?" "It's in Mount Lebanon, so it must be good! "Did you Yelp them yet?" "Um, no. I guess we can go." "It's for $40! Darren, it's gonna expire! I forgot about it!" "Ok, ok, mum. We'll swing by and pick it up." "Dress nice. Don't go there in your work clothes. You can borrow one of your dad's..." "Mum, I have some nice jeans and a sweater. Geez." "You have to make a reservation..." "Ok, Mum..." "And wear something nice. Make sure you take Kay..." "Ooook, Mum..." In a little-traveled section of a modish South Hills suburb, one will find Luma (their secondary location is in Aspinwall) on a brick road near an oxidized underpass. Had I been dropped here blindfolded, I would think I was in the East End, and when the two of us strolled in, I still felt that way. With the ever-changing lights on the walls that segued from a cool blue to an even cooler green put me at ease, Luma proved to be one of those restaurants where I knew I'd be in for a fantastic supper even before I had a fork in my hand, and partake in a fantastic supper we did. An alabaster wedge of brie began this gourmet ceremony. Baked thoroughly, ideally, oozing, bleeding with a chutney of fresh berries and toasted walnut, we spread the cheese's gluey sludge onto crackers and luxuriated in smooth, lardy, tart essences, saving the waxy, pale cortex for last. Before arrival, I scouted Luma's menu, and was immediately taken by The Billionaire Burger. Some would consider it to be a churlish dining choice in a restaurant like this, but its description and price (hey, I wanted to get the most out of my $40!) made it irresistible despite Kay's protests. My doll would kvetch,"You're ordering a burger? Here?" Hell yes I did! The Angus beef was newly ground, adorned with grill mark tiger stripes. Slathered on its underside was aioli. Draped atop the patty was the underutilized bibb lettuce, sweetly roasted tomatoes, and aged Beemster, a Kaiser roll baked by the finest artisan and toasted by the deftest short order diner cook holding it all in. As juices and dressing dripped onto my hands, I knew I had to continue to eat this burger with silverware as more elegant weaponry was required for this very civilized beast in such baroque environs. Flaky, moist, grilled without defect, and captured in the Bay of Fundy, the flamingo-colored fish was stuffed with heavy, humid jumbo lump crab meat and garnished with a Grand Marnier jelly for a fanciful touch. A spoonful of caviar would have been excessive yet welcome. Dessert was the brownie sundae-turned-miniature souffle known as The Chocolate Saucy. An exercise in simplicity, white and dark chocolate in liquid form was drizzled all over the whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, and the warm, spongy, salty chocolate choco-chip cake, forming a lake under everything. It's been done before but not with such class. After grandiosity of the preceding courses, all that was required was The Chocolate Saucy's sweet, sweet economy. The complimentary sourdough bread was thickly cut, rich, porous, and served as a phenomenal vessel for the brie when the crackers were gone. Be wary of filling up on it for its impeccable quality can tempt you into doing so. Our server was joyful, conscientious, adept, attentive, and had a culinary song in her soul. Thus, we enjoyed her company. Enjoy Luma with some of your own and realize that Pittsburgh's South Hills are not to be dismissed by lovers of good, good food. read more

We're venturing into unknown territory here. The South Hills. This is off the beaten path, so you'd expect it to be a bit "neighborhood-y." Like an old house converted into a restaurant. But even though it may have been an old house, it is ultra modern inside. Then when you walk out back and it's a beautiful deck with a great setting in the back of the woods. Expectations were then set high for such a pretty place. We hit a couple snafu's as a water glass was pretty dirty, then a wine glass came with floating specks of something inside. I think it might be time for a new dishwasher. But, we could shake that off with a great appetizer! We ordered the baked brie, as it had been talked up in previous reviews. I'm no brie expert, but it just didn't have that bite it usually does. The outer crust was light and flaky, but the brie itself just didn't taste like it should. I wouldn't order it again.. womp, womp. I ordered the seafood pasta in a tomato cream sauce. This dish was definitely the best, but still missing some flavor I thought it would have. Don't get me wrong, it was good, but not great. I thought the large scallop was delicious, I just wish there was one more! There were two pieces of shrimp and mussels and a handful of crab, so it wasn't a total bust. With Bistro 19 and Il Pizzaollo up the street, I don't think I'd be running here again anytime soon. In a word, yum! I love Luma and everything it makes dearly, and it saddens me that I can't eat here more often; if I did, both my waist and my wallet would hate me. I've had the pleasure of trying and absolutely loving several of Luma's cocktails, its crabcakes, it crab-stuffed salmon, and it's Ahi tuna dish. I have never been disappointed. The seasoning and sauces that Luma uses completes its dishes of perfection. I even liked their scallops when I got to sample those, and I am not a scallop-loving person; something about the way Luma's cooks designed the dish elevates it to a level where even I like it. I'm not sure why people are saying service is bad here, but I suppose off days happen. As for me, I've never experienced a grumpy face; the waiters and waitresses have always been extremely attentive and really helpful when picking a dinner item or a wine. Before I wrap up I have to ask, does anyone know what the dessert menu here is like? I've never had any room after my meal to have any and I'm really curious about whether or not I need to come here to just enjoy dessert one of these days. 5 stars! read more

What a great new find for my family and I. My grandmother lives right on Washington road, so when we go out to eat, we always venture to the usual Il Pizz or Sesame Inn, but now that we found this place, I think we have a new dinner and lunch stop. The decor and atmosphere of this place is beautiful. I honestly do not think I have seen a nicer and trendier restaurant recently. The lighting and the bar is mind blowingly beautiful. If you are old enough to drink you would love this place and the view from the bar. Now the food hit the spot too. The french onion soup and the crab bisque were both spot on. My french onion had Gruyere cheese, which I really thought was a great touch. Also, my stacked chicken meal was delicious. There was even a real sized side portion of mouth-watering broccoli. What a fabulous dining experience! My husband and I visited Luma for a dear friend's birthday and could not have been more pleased with it. The dining area is smaller, but still cozy and private.
