So... here's what you do: Come hungry, and bring another hungry friend with you. Other than coffee, order as if you were ordering for one. There will be more than enough food to not only satisfy both of you, but there will even be leftovers to take home in a doggy bag. I stopped in and ordered the Grits Bowl, which came with eggs and pancakes. The grits bowl did not hit the spot for me. While I ordinarily love cheese, I also love everything in the right place, time, and amount. Having the entire top of a large-diameter bowl covered in a layer of cheese was excessive. Going a little deeper, there were a handful of shrimp, though they were overcooked to the point of being rubbery. As for the grits, by themselves, they were bland and wholly unremarkable. Together with the cheese, veggies, and spices up top, the spoonful becomes better, though on their own, neither texture nor flavor delivered. When it comes to eggs, I requested these as over medium, though they were delivered as over-easy. I didn't want to be *that* guy sending these back over something so trivial. I was very surprised that there were four of them... many places stick to two, three at the most. Finally, we come to the pancakes. These were the highlight of the meal. In the very short stack of two, the first one had the right flavors, but the texture of an extremely lightly crisp exterior with a pillowy interior wasn't there. The second pancake, however, absolutely nailed it across the board. When it comes to the prices, what Lume's lacks in quality, they make up for in sheer volume. While large portions don't quite work on me, I do appreciate that one can at least get their money's worth. Final verdict: Given my preferences, the only thing Lume's has that would pull me back are their pancakes. If I lived closer to Beverley, I would be open to retuning to get a pancake-based dish. However, outside of this, the experience was not one that demands a return visit. read more

This is a beautiful restaurant and right in my neighborhood. My father used to bring me here in the 90s when they opened and I remember really enjoying the food. However, my experience today let me know I shouldn't patronize this business any more. Each time I've come here over the past few years, I've been unimpressed. Today this became increasingly clear. I ordered a corned beef hash meal with cheesy grits. As you can see from my photos, the grits came with a couple of slices of cheese over top, and not mixed in. Neither the grits nor the eggs had a lick of seasoning on them - no salt and no pepper. I added this myself at home. The pancakes were fairly tasty. I asked for blueberries to be added into the mix, for which I paid an additional $3. Overall, my experience was lackluster. My breakfast, with me adding cheese and blueberries, came to $22.23, which was way too expensive for the food I received. I just can't recommend Lumes, and I won't return. read more

I stopped at Lume's for breakfast today after physical therapy since I wasn't in a rush to get back to work. I ordered the stuffed French toast, but unfortunately it wasn't warm enough to melt the butter, and the sausage had no flavor. I didn't send it back because I was starving and didn't have time to wait for reheating and I doubted heat would improve taste by much. I've been here before -- it was never my favorite spot, but it used to be at least adequate. That wasn't the case today. The service didn't meet even a basic standard; the server seemed hesitant to speak and wasn't engaged. The only positive was the person bussing tables, who was both efficient and timely. Came in during the week at brunch hours between 10-1. Very quiet, not crowded, excellent customer service. I had an omelette, it was huge, you're definitely not going to eat much else with that. I wished I would've glanced at the specials before predictably ordering the same thing. I went here for breakfast on Monday, April 21, and had an absolutely dehumanizing experience. I arrived with one other person and we both ordered the same thing: steak and eggs. When our food arrived, we immediately noticed that my steak was significantly smaller than the steak of the person I was with. Despite it being the exact same meal, the difference was dramatic, and it would've been ridiculous to pay the same price for such difference sized steaks. When I brought this up to our server, they were understanding and working to figure something out. That's when the owner came out and the nightmare started. I tried expressing my issue to him but he was committed to misunderstanding me and started to yell he wasn't going to do anything and I had no choice but to eat the steak. Still trying to express my issue, he continued to yell and disrespect me to the point that other guests were looking over to see him standing over me while cursing and berating me. As a grown, Black man, in an establishment full of Black people, it was completely inappropriate for this white man to come stand over me, point his finger in my face, and talk to me the way he did. Saying he "wouldn't do a damn thing" to fix the situation because he's the owner and he can do what he wants. Not once did I use foul language or raise my voice, but this was still the energy I was met with. If my elderly sister had not start eating her food, which she wasn't satisfied with as well, I wouldn't have paid for either. Because he was not trying to hear what I was saying and ignored whatever I said to him. I never imagined that a place I have come to for years with family and friends would make me feel so dehumanized and disrespected. I will be letting everyone know about this horrendous experience and doing everything in my power to see change at this establishment, because what I went through was completely unacceptable, and no human should be treated like that in general, let alone at a place where they're bringing their business. read more

Ordered and received my food right away. Had a super good country skillet (was able to switch my protein from ham to chicken sausage) with pancakes. The skillet was so darn good. Cooked perfectly with onions, green pepper, potatoes, mushrooms, eggs and chicken sausage. I was so satisfied with my meal. Definitely will continue to be a returning customer. I had a friend in town who used to live in Chicago and suggested we go here for breakfast. I had never been here. Very warm and inviting atmosphere. The waitress cracked me up - you can tell she's been a waitress there for awhile. She was friendly and took our order. I had the blueberry pancakes with chicken sausage and hashbrowns. My meal was just okay - the pancakes weren't soft, they were kind of crisp on the bottom. I have had better chicken sausage. Now, I will say that my friend's breakfast was on point. She got a turkey bacon omelette which she let me taste and it was very tasty and a nice sized omelette. I would never think of ordering an omelette with turkey bacon in it (pork bacon is my lover, lol). As I was finishing my meal, I noticed a piece of hair on my plate (pictured). I let the waitress know and at first, she was like "oh well" but I think it was because she didn't quite know how to react. She came back and apologized and told me she would take it off the bill. Because I enjoyed the turkey bacon omelette sample, I asked if I could order that which the waitress said "yes". She did apologize a couple of times. The omelette was good. Lumes is a neighborhood breakfast place that I've patronized on many occasions. Honestly, I was apprehensive about going because of the pandemic and shooting, but I gave it another chance. I can say that I was happy with my waiter and food. This is not a fancy breakfast/brunch restaurant. The food is ordinary, but still good. I've been to the Lumes in Orland Park which is a great place. I went to this location for the first time today July 25 for breakfast, and what a disappointment. This location needs some major updating, even the exterior signage is outdated. Look at the pictures for the Orland Park location and you'll see a huge difference. I had the crepes, they were way thicker then what a normal crepe should be and really had no taste to them. I had some ham on the side and it looked like lunchmeat ham. Orland Park location did not serve like this. The hallway leading to the restroom smelled really bad. The only positive thing I could say was that the server who waited on us, she was super nice and very attentive. I do not recommend this place. read more
