Not worth the hype. First thing you notice is that the waiting area was designed by someone who had no idea how ergonomics and use of space works. No one fits and you end up standing next to a revolving door that tries to hit you every time someone comes in. They also have a tiny waiting area in a walled off space on the side but they decided to put a table there too. Genius (not really). Be ready to wait because for some reason everyone decided this was a hot spot. Forget getting there after 9am if you want to wait less than 45-60 minutes. The tables are jammed together, the service is SLOW and the food is expensive and really not all that special. Save time and money and go somewhere else. read more

The main reason I am giving 4 stars is that I made a reservation for this restaurant at 1pm for 2 people and we showed up on time. The host told us that the waiters were cleaning up the tables and that we would be seated shortly. I probably saw about 3 or 4 parties that showed up after us that got seated before we did and we had to check with the hostess again about 15-20 minutes after our reservation time to see if our table was ready. She seemed embarrassed like she had forgotten about us and quickly sat us as soon as we checked in with her the second time. Once we were sat, we ordered iced lattes and chimichurri steak and eggs for brunch. The food was great. Steak and eggs were cooked well. The coffee was delicious. What a busy place for a Sunday brunch! They're clearly doing something right here, since every table was filled and there was a constant flow of in and out traffic. Our server was very kind and, while it was busy, you never felt like you were forgotten about, though our food did take a little longer than I would've expected, but I chalk that up to the fact they were so busy. The meal itself was great! I ordered their Ranchero Breakfast Burrito, which is a decent size and is relatively "healthier" for a breakfast burrito. It comes with eggs, a little cheese, poblano peppers, black beans, sweet corn, and quinoa. I loved the salsa that comes with the burrito and, while they didn't give me a choice for a side with breakfast, the pineapple covered in tajin was a great and unique twist! Had a great experience at Beatrix. Came on a Saturday morning around 9am and there was no wait. The place is a pretty good size inside. Service was perfect. They offer a seperate gluten free menu, which is quite large. I tried the Gluten Free bacon, egg, cheese breakfast sandwich with a side of hashbrowns. My husband got the same sandwich but the non gluten free version and added sausage and side of pancakes. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The hashbrowns were nice and crispy, which I prefer. We came for brunch and were very glad we had a reservation because it was extremely busy. Check-in and seating took a few minutes, which was understandable. Once seated, we ordered quickly and the food came out at a normal pace. The ambiance was really nice, cozy vibes with nice background music. The food and drinks were amazing. No follow-up, no drink refill requests, nothing -- we eventually had to get up and find him just to pay and leave. I saw him taking orders at nearby tables without stopping by ours. This might be one of those places you'd overlook unless a local tipped you off to it. From the outside, you'd probably walk by it. Inside it's trendy but unpretentious. Beatrix lets its food speak for itself and it does. In fact, we came here three separate times for dinner, brunch, and lunch. For dinner, the French onion short ribs were incredible. The meat was tender and extremely tasty. The Korean Fried Short Ribs were crispy, and not too spicy. It also came with a nice dipping sauce and side of cabbage. Even though it was dinner time, we were advised the Hazelnut Oat Mocha was excellent and it was (ordered it every time we came). For lunch, I opted for a wild mushroom teriyaki bowl and it was tasty, with a touch of sweet. A friend got the enchiladas and raved about that too. The variety of menu items was thoughtful. The consistent high quality ingredients were impressive. And the presentation was Instagram worthy. The service is good. You can easily split a bill using the table's QR code. There's a small bakery inside for people to grab and go. Teas and coffees are also available for takeout. Reservations strongly recommended because they were always busy. Enjoyed a celebratory dinner at Beatrix - the restaurant has an elegant modern and earthy feel to it. While it seems to be more known for brunch, the dinner was incredible. I split the spicy rigatoni and green goddess salad with a friend which were delish. My favorite of all the dishes I tasted was the hot honey Brussels, so much flavor goodness, sweet, umami and spicy. I ordered the pour obsession drink which was nice and had a strong grapefruit flavor. The hot honey fried chicken sandwich is what gluten free dreams are made of I was so excited to learn that I could enjoy the sandwich because they don't fry anything with gluten in their fryers. The servers were attentive and kind while taking our order recommending the best options for us I did try the shashuka, however, it was a bit watery and the eggs were under cooked for my liking. The flavor was there with the spices, however, it was the eggs that were undercooked that I did not enjoy. This place was happened today on a Friday even with the severe weather in the city. It's essentially connected to the Northwestern Hospital buildings right off of Saint Clair. Easy to get to off of Michigan Avenue etc. We actually had a reservation which helped. We designed in the main dining room. There is a small market area that you can do take away. It did take a while for a server come reach us. We opted to have the turkey burger and the regular cheeseburger. I had some modifications requested and most of them were accommodated. One I think she misunderstood when I said putting the bread and butter pickles on the side because I received a side of pickles and they were also on the turkey burger. The turkey burger was good, but nothing extraordinary. It was two thin patties on a bun with all the toppings. The cheeseburger look pretty good. Both came with french fries. The service and check bags were pretty good overall, although there were some long lapse in between. We did not offer for dessert and I started eating the burger before I could take a photo. Visited on valentines day (forgetting it was valentine's day lol). Checked in and the hostess gave us an estimated time which ended up being like 10 minutes. We were seated with a booster seat but then changed to a high chair. We were given a child's menu and crayons for our 10 month old. They had a few specials and we got the spinach and artichoke dip that came with chips, celery, and carrots. We got the buttered pasta for our son. We continued look over the menu and i decided on the Parmesan Crusted Whitefish with a glass of Pinot Noir while my husband ordered the Faroe Islands Salmon with a glass of Chianti. The dip and child's pasta arrived. The dip had a nice crust and was flavorful. The pasta was simple but baby enjoyed it lol. My whitefish was cooked perfectly, moist, and super flavorful sauce. Happy hour deal is great! All the appetizers under "To Begin" section of the menu is only $9. Discounted drinks too. I saw a lot of people were getting the burger ($12 at happy hour), but I wasn't feeling like having burger so we got items from the regular menu instead. I really enjoyed the Parmesan crusted white fish, it was perfectly crunchy outside and tender on the inside, and seasoned perfectly. The beef kebab was okay. I loved the spicy tuna on crispy rice and honey glazed Brussels sprouts, but the kids didn't like those. I probably would not order the Korean chicken meat balls again, tasted like bad kung pao chicken to me. Caesar salad was well dressed and delicious, but I wouldn't add the steak next time because the steak was a bit sad. Service was good despite the restaurant being so busy. One small detail that really impressed me was the fact that they gave me real plastic tupperwares for my leftovers. No paper or foam boxes. From the outside, it's a little difficult to tell how large this restaurant actually is, which is great because they're very busy, but there wasn't a long wait. Update: Beatrix no longer in my top 5 (see my previous review from 9 years ago...). Whomp whomp. We were able to make a day of Open Table dinner reservation here after playing tourist on the architectural boat tour and arrived 10 minutes early, but still had to wait several minutes to be seated, despite many unoccupied tables. The rum cable car cocktail was nice, smooth, sweet, lightly citrusy, and balanced for $15. Our table shared the Korean chicken meatballs, which were served very hot and accompanied with micro greens, cilantro, and gochujang caramel. Now I know why that sauce was so sticky! The lime was a nice touch that elevated the flavors of the meatballs. For my entree, I tried the blackened fish tacos, which came with 2 hearty sized tacos, creamed corn, and tortilla chips and salsa. The fish itself was a little bland, and the flavors of the toppings kind of clashed. The almond slaw was out of place, and the crunch of the nuts was off putting. I welcomed the guac, but the pickled radish (?) was a little overpowering. I can't say that I recommend it. My husband got the prime burger bc he was excited for the house made giardiniera, but spoiler alert... he didn't care for the giardiniera, as it was a little on the raw side. My kiddos were happy with their go to choices of a cheeseburger and grilled cheese, and the value was great at $9.95 and came with a drink. Service was okay. Our waitress disappeared after taking our drink orders, so our drinks sat on the bar for a while. A-OK experience. I wanted to like it more. read more

We went on a Saturday morning for an early breakfast to find out they do not open until 8 so we went for a stroll around the block to build up an appetite. The restaurant is big and spacious and I liked the 80's rock music it was playing. Onto the food. 1) Eggs your way (kids menu) with chicken sausage. This was good. The eggs was not dry, nice smashed sausage patty (hint of sweetness/maple) and crispy hash browns. Did not disappoint! 2) chilaquiles verde - this was decent. Think saucy breakfast nachos. Normally I do not care much for tomatillos, but I thought this one was pretty good. I only wish it had a little more sauce to it or having an option for how I want the eggs cooked. They defaulted scramble whereas I would have preferred poached. It's still a solid dish. I would not hesitate to come back and try more from here. Everything about this place was disappointing. The food, the service, the ergonomics and the atmosphere. We sat at the bar and it was extremely cramped. I'm an average sized person (5'6" and 140 lbs) and I felt like I was sitting in a tiny airplane seat at the bar. No leg room or elbow room. The bar to chair height ratio was off. No bartenders behind the bar. Ordered food and no one provided silverware or came over to make sure we had everything we needed so I had to hunt down a hostess to have her bring some. The food itself was mediocre. I had a mimosa and it was somehow terrible. How can a mimosa be terrible? No one ever checked in to see how everything was tasting.
