Walking, what's the big deal? We all do it, right?…read more Well, it became abundantly clear to me that there 'might be something to it' during the Portland Marathon last October. I'd heard of race walking, but didn't really give it too much thought. So rather than make the same error repeatedly, I took a walking technique class from Judy Heller of Wonders of Walking as part of my training for the next long walking race. She is amazing and proved to me that all of the instincts I have about how to walk quickly and effectively are dead wrong. This explains a lot. :-) She asked our group, "What is your goal for the race?" Most of my teammates answered with time based goals. Mine was a little more basic, "I just don't want to lose any toenails!" Now all I have to do is practice, practice, practice. -------- WOW has a walking club that meets every Saturday morning beginning in February at REI in the Pearl District and the one in Clackamas. My walk team Buns and Roses received walk training from Judy and felt her coaching was key to our successfully completing these two relays many times. The Havasu Health Walk Challenge's mission is to provide education, inspiration and opportunities to our community on the health benefits of walking. As the chairperson on this program in Lake Havasu I realized that we needed a boost in enthusiasm and many walkers who have been with the program for over 4 years needed to elevate their walk. I knew just who would be the best to inspire new walkers to get on their feet and our more experienced walkers to do it better and longer. My committee backed me up and we approached Judy about coming to the sunny southwest! We invited Judy to come to Lake Havasu City AZ for a walking clinic on Oct 30 2010. and we worked an all day walking seminar. I knew that Judy would have an impact on each person and on our program but did not anticipate how much! The participants varied in walking experience and motivation. Judy assessed the interest quickly and adapted our outline to fit the needs and walking levels of the audience! That was key to the success of this clinic! Because of her command of her extensive knowledge base and knowing the needs of each level of interest she was able to help each person attain their goal for this clinic. The favorite segment was on shoes and feet! the demos and interactive self assessments of our shoe selection was invaluable. At our Saturday walk yesterday the talk was all about their new walk and one lady actually had already purchased a pair of Judy's favorite shoes and she loves them! Judy took us all outside in two different sessions and gave us a refresher on walk technique and how to give it a kick. She watched us as we practiced and gave individual advice and encouragement. During our lunch break Judy opened some time for a Q and A. What a treat to have our individual issues addressed face to face! Our experienced walkers were so charged with their refined walk and felt they could walk our 30 mile walk relay better and especially without injury! A strong competitive walker had a personal session with Judy on racewalking and by the end of the hour she was so charged up with knowledge and a feeling she could do this and do it well! As a walk director and committee members we are looking to bring Judy to Havasu again to share even more of her knowledge on nutrition and more on feet, shoes and body mechanics! We would highly recommend Judy Heller to any individual or group who would be interested in adding walking to their health regiment or wants to kick it up a notch in being competitive or accomplishing a long distance walking event! She incorporates poses that I don't encounter often with other…read moreteachers -- that allows me to stretch and engage muscles that are often ignored, gives me better awareness and fluency in my motions, and perhaps most importantly, keeps my practice new and engaging. She was even able to lead classes while she had an injury. She pushed her students, while being careful with her own body and health. It was a great example, since I think many of us push ourselves too hard when injured, instead of patiently letting our bodies heal. I see a lot of injuries as a rock climber (and have had my fair share as well), so it's refreshing to see the right balance of pushing yourself and self-care. I always get a great workout in her class! She's always available for questions and happy to give to support for anyone in need. I highly recommend practicing with Emily!

She pushes you just to where you need to be without going too far. I love her style, a more gentle Hatha yoga, which focuses on spending time in a pose to explore it and get a deep stretch. Holiday explains poses and sequences very well, giving adjustments as needed and she pays attention to every student. I wish I still lived near Hawthorne so that I could come to her class every week. My mom, who still lives close by, goes to Holiday's class every week. After trying different styles and instructors, Holiday by far remains my favorite. If you get the chance, check out her classes. They always end in a nice, restorative shavasana. Also, if you're a teen or a teacher of teens, you get a discount. Holiday teaches a three hour workshop once a month on the first Sunday too.

We have been pleased with the value of the therapy at Family Roots. Over the past five years, our…read moretwo therapists have been attentive and responsive, and have presented helpful tools to supplement the sessions. My complaint about Family Roots is not related to the therapists, but to the ownership and administration of the practice. In our experience, the communication can be vastly improved - from the accuracy of the status of the therapist's insurance network, to billing estimates, timeliness of invoices, and more. We have also made requests to have follow-up phone conversations to discuss the billing, but in the past months, those requests have been denied or ignored. After paying for all our services on-time, we had a billing conflict that began with us having 4 sessions go unbilled and ultimately resulted in us paying significantly more than we expected and had previously paid. Family Roots would not speak directly with us, and their email explanations contradicted what the reps from our insurance company shared. I reacted emotionally at first, which I apologized for, and when we tried on multiple occasions to have a phone conversation with the owner to come to an understanding, she refused to speak with us and instead canceled the rest of our 10-year-old daughter's upcoming therapy sessions after we removed auto-payments from our account. This disruption in care has truly affected my child. I'm surprised this clinic would behave so callously and I feel the only thing I can do at this point is provide this warning to anyone thinking of joining Family Roots.
