Pre 2020 Luna was a fine establishment and I really honestly didn't have anything negative to say. My wife and I would go there once every week or two, we moved out of the city and have only been there 3 times in the last six months. Each time the food has been extremely bland or tasted as if it had gone bad. Well...2 out of the 3 times my wife and I both got pretty sick after dining in. Aside from the above, the menu hasn't changed in 2-3 years. Fantastic high end Mexican dining downtown Grand Rapids. The salsa flight was a great way to start with a great variety of salsa options. The mild salsa was our least favorite because it was so runny. The tacos were great and my favorite was the fish taco because it had a pineapple salsa on top. The service was very friendly and we were lucky to get a table early before most reservations started. My wife enjoyed the tamales as well. Overall, Luna is a great option when downtown. I thought the salsa and chips were great as well as the drinks but was disappointed with my meal. I've heard positive things about Luna and finally got a chance to check it out. Their outdoor dining area is quaint with a decent amount of seating available. We got their salsa flight and tacos. The salsas were fantastic and brought just the right amount of heat. The fish taco was tasty, but I didn't care for the pastor or asada. It was a little bit pricey for the size of the tacos, but still filling with the flight as an appetizer. I head to Luna when I'm in the mood for Mexican/Latin flavors and a strong drink. I'm usually at the bar, just before happy hour ends, and ready to order a smattering of items. My go-to drink is the Oaxacan Old Fashioned. It's smokey and boozy with just a bit of sweetness. In terms of food, I tend to order more than what two people should reasonably eat, but that's because several happy hour deals are involved. Here's the spread: - Chips and Guacamole or the Salsa Trio: You get a TON of chips. They're fried in house and a bit oily, but still delicious - Chicken Flautas - The sauce that accompanies this fried rolled taco makes the dish. Ask for more on the side to dip your chips into! - Mussels - The mix of mussels and chorizo is great, and it's a sizable portion - Tacos - I've had them all, and I think the credo/pork taco is the best. It's carnitas style with shredded pork. I love the sautéed and pickled onions that the tacos come with. Plop on some salsa, add a squeeze of lime, and you're in good shape to enjoy. To change things up, more recently I had the pork torta and the pork and chicken tamales. I say skip these, and stick to above. Made reservations for a Thursday night for 4 adults + a baby- smart move! It was pretty busy already at 6pm and progressively got busier! our server was great! Very attentive and we saw him often- he spoke very softly, however, and for a loud restaurant- he was hard to hear! Started with a Happy Hour Margarita - small size for the price but good. Also had the chips/guac and the chips/ queso apps from the Happy Hour Menu. Both had heaping piles of chips- homemade and greasy deliciousness. I love homemade chips so a little grease doesn't bother me.. lots of broken pieces... but again.. not to concerning. Only issue is that you get such a Small helping of guacamole or queso for SO many chips. Also, the pico it comes with is in a tiny cup that makes it hard to scoop out of because the pieces are so chunky. The gauc is good and the queso is good, though. Their menu isn't super extensive, but has a variety of tacos, salads, and other Mexican fare. I went with the 3 tacos and chose the chorizo special, pork, and shrimp. Food came out relatively fast. Everything is served on metal tray type plates, kinda love the aesthetics of it all! The three tacos came with a size of pickled veggies and sauteed onions.. i was not prepared for how spicy they were! Good, but SPICY! The tacos were all on the smaller side.. i would say they could have put more filling in each.. by no means were they overflowing with food. Compared to other locations with similar style tacos.. these were on the chintzy side. Chorizo was very good, shrimp was just okay.. not a lot of shrimp and not a ton of flavor, pork was good. I ended with a Pink Margarita and again.. good but small- even for happy hour price. I would go back because i love the vibe and aesthetics of the restaurant- the decor is beautiful! The only reason I am giving this restaurant three stars instead of 4 or more is because it is by far the LOUDEST restaurant I have ever been to in my life. The acoustics in this space could not be worse. I went there for a meal before a concert at Van Andel and I couldn't even hear my wife talking to me from across the table. Sound just bounces off the walls and ceilings. If I was a server I think I would have to find a different Place to work because my ears would be ringing all night. Now, the food was delicious and plentiful. The homemade tortilla chips are incredibly good and the food overall was delicious. Our server was very nice and checked on us frequently. We got the family style tacos for $37 (9). They were fine, but the price was pretty expensive for some tacos. We thought the Carne asada was dry and not very flavorful. The salsas provided were a bit spicy, but not too much for an upper scale crowd. The bean and avocado taco was just okay, but there wasn't anything crisp to change up the texture. The pork one was probably the best of the ones we tried but none of them stunned us. We went on a Tuesday evening and there was about a 30 minute wait. Love this place for their family taco meal. The rice and beans are phenomenal. They also give you flautas, chips and guacamole and salsa. You get 1.5lbs of protein - 3 meats. We get steak, pork and the chicken and chorizo. You get corn tortillas as well and a host of other salsas, sour cream and some hot sauce. It's like $65 for enough to feed 6. This was an ok dinner. Sometimes I feel I'm overly critical of Mexican food since I'm Mexican, but honestly there were too many things that annoyed me. I was just so hungry ... I didn't have the energy to walk out and go somewhere else. We had the chips and guacamole as the appetizer ($8!). First off, the ratio to chips and guacamole was way off. Way too many chips for the amount of guacamole (wasting food hurts my heart). And I'm not sure if I can say guacamole ... the guacamole was actually the avocado in one dish and the pico de gallo in another; so there was some assembly required. The chips I believe are made in-house. I've had way better in Detroit, they're free with the meal and salsa is included (and yeah you have the pay for salsa and chips as well $6 I believe). They are way too saturated with oil at this place. I ordered the chicken fajitas and my husband ordered the ny strip steak fajitas. So one thing they do at this restaurant is that they cook their proteins separate from the veggies which makes no sense to me. Traditionally everything should be marinated and cooked together so the flavors become a wonderful party in your mouth and are visually appealing. I will admit the chicken and steak were cooked perfectly ... but I didn't order a grilled chicken breast on a bed of bell peppers. I ordered chicken fajitas. I'm just not a fan of this deconstructed business, it doesn't make the food more delicious, but apparently it's justification for overpricing the food. Flavor is lost and again assembly is annoying. Beans tasted weird, but the rice was good. I'm visiting from Detroit, MI. I grew up in SW Detroit (Mexicantown), where there's a taqueria on just about every corner, and the chips and salsa are free. I'd rank almost every taqueria in SW Detroit better than this place in terms of flavor and price. The only fancy Mexican food I've had that is in the same price range and actually worth it is in Dearborn (SE Michigan; it's called M Cantina. The food and drinks are good however they are taking the covid rules so far beyond seriously that a family of 7 was turned away while I was sitting there dining in. We felt safe and distanced and warm! The food was mediocre but the service, atmosphere and comfort were A plus. My husband got the steak fajitas. He said the steak was good but the other toppings were quite bland. The elote was really not great. My marinated pork tacos were great! The drinks were nothing special but fine. I have been a customer since they opened, I'd say I eat here at least once a month. I went in person to make a reservation for a group of 8 on a Saturday at 5:30. I spoke to a manager, who took my number and said he'd call me if he had an issue making a reservation but that he didn't see any problem at all at the time. I never heard from him, so assumed I was good to go. I showed up with my group and they said my reservation was made for 1:15 and showed it was cancelled... WHAT THE HELL! Do you know how hard it is to get a table for 8 ppl on a Saturday in Grand Rapids? Impossible. This was our second time eating at Luna, and we'll be back for a third time. Great safety protocols in place, and we really liked their patio. We started with the salsa flight and I had a Caipirinha. We both agreed that while all of the salsas were flavorful the hot one was the best. The Caipirinha was just what I needed on a hot day! My husband thought the chorizo taco was the best out of his three (shrimp, steak, and chorizo). My favorite was the sweet potato and black bean out of my three (fish, sweet potato, and chorizo). Luna left me and my friends less than impressed. I had not yet made my way into Luna and it's because there are so many incredible tacos in town I already have a favorite place to go. But, I saw a promotion on fb that they were adding brunch on Sundays, so I made a reservation. My bf and I had friends staying with us from out of town and I made a reservation for the first brunch thinking this was a great opportunity to scope it out. When we arrived there were only a handful of other parties so I don't think many people had heard about the brunch option yet. Shortly after sitting our server took our drink requests. They have small water glasses and a refill bottle on the table. The server would periodically come by to refill our waters, but he seemed annoyed or in such a rush because he would miss the glass and get water on the table. Glancing at the menu, it was not very extensive and is pretty straight forward. We made our food decisions quickly. I ordered three tacos: chorizo and egg, pork and steak. It took 45 minutes to get our food and there was barely anyone there. I will say the tacos were not bad but they were small; about the size of my palm. The chorizo and egg was the best and the salsas provided were good. However, I have an obsession with a few taco places around town and Luna's tacos didn't stand up portion or flavor wise. My friend got a quesadilla and said it was quite greasy. So at this point we have finished eating and it's time for checks. It takes 30 minutes for our checks to be run because something happened with their system. They didn't let us know until we had already sat there for 20 minutes. One of our friends had to take off and rush to work. We were at this establishment for TWO HOURS and probably ate for a total of 15 minutes. At the very least I thought they would comp something or provide a coupon for future use, but no cigar. We all left bored and unhappy because we had arrived super excited to try Luna. Later that day my friend called to tell me she was charged twice and had to get in contact with the establishment to fix it... All in all, very poor. I will not be returning and I'm embarrassed I brought our group here because I have many breakfast places I love in town that would have left us all thrilled. I was suspicious....I'm always suspicious of a "Mexican" restaurant where the people serving me are not even remotely "Mexican"..... but they impressed me. The Fish Tacos were top notch... I'm kinda obsessed with Fish Tacos too. Like I once convinced my wife to plan an entire 10 day vacation in Florida around a Fish Taco place that I fell in love with. I required that we be able to get them once a day every single day. So yeah, I'm obsessed. So when Luna made me say "legit"... it was kind of a BIG DEAL. The Chorizo Tacos were good too... but I'd readily go back and tackle about 6 of those Fish Tacos and end up eating way too much in preparation for a food coma. The drinks were standard, not mind blowing. But the Bourbon Lemonade was a nice change of pace at a "Mexican" place. The happy hour specials are nice. I ended up getting a Pigeon Hill for $2... I don't even think I can get them for that at the liquor store, so there's that to be thankful for as well. The Chips and Guacamole are good... but they aren't really worth the $7-8 they want for them. Basically they give you a whole bag's worth of tortilla chips and about 1/4 of the necessary guacamole. So I don't think I'd get that again. And the one major downfall.... THERE ARE HIPSTERS.... A LOT OF HIPSTERS..... even the goofball host in his tapered jeans and "ironic" glasses... but they seemed to keep their distance and could tell by the look in my eyes that we were not allies.... but the food was good and I'll be back, regardless of the HIPSTER PUNKS. Ate there for lunch today. Food was not good like before. I ordered 3 tacos including a fish taco, it had an over powering fish smell when it came out which fresh fish should not have a strong odor and tasted worse. I literally gaggedThe waiter said that is what mahi mahi tuna(which in not a fish) tastes like. I am a culinary trained cook and I know fish should not taste like that. The tacos are 3 for 10$ or 2 for 8$ if you want fish it is extra on top of that. I was only given 1.50$ for getting fish but not for the whole taco I could not eat. Will not be back anytime soon. Good place to eat and I will stop in again. I chips and queso for an appetizer and shrimp tacos for my main course. My girlfriend had steak fajitas. Smaller portions but the food was good. Nothing fancy or really unique but the food was done well and I would feel comfortable coming back and trying more items. I have been to Luna a few times, and most recently enjoyed a nice dinner last night. The location is virtually unbeatable, as it's extremely central and easy to drive to downtown. If you can't find street parking, there are two lots across the street which provide close and accessible paid parking. The atmosphere is warm and Luna is nearly always moderately busy. This attributes to the vibe you crave for a Mexican place. A fun place to dine for singles, couples and groups alike. Last night we arrived in time to enjoy happy hour Paloma's (happy hour is 4-7 on week nights) the drinks were balanced and refreshing, although I do wish our waitress had remembered to bring me a straw (upon request). The chips at Luna aren't complimentary as a more standard American/Mexican restaurant may be. But in my humble opinion a Mexican restaurant dining experience is not complete without at least one basket of chips! We ordered chips with queso and salsa. The salsa was chunky (more like a pico, really) and the queso was warm, creamy, and had black beans on the bottom. I ordered the cheese quesadilla, and requested the addition of fajita veggies as I am a vegetarian. The quesadilla was hot, and served with small sides of guacamole, (which was a bit over flavored with lime) sour cream and salsa. At this point in the evening, our drinks took a bit longer to prepare, though our waitress did apologize for the hold up. My friend ordered tamales and tacos, noting that the vegetable tamale was especially delicious, and the meat tamale was more "just average". I got a shrimp taco and a fish taco. Both were good! I was happy with my choices. Although, I did not care for the margarita flight, the margaritas were way too sweet (coming from someone who likes sweet drinks). We also got the salsa flight. It came with 3 types of salsa and none of them were that good if I'm being honest. We thought the mild one tasted like tomato sauce and lacked any flavor. The chips were good though but they're fried so a bit greasy. Our table got a side of queso and that was quickly devoured. But it's queso so.. enough said. Service was great!
