    Kids Quesadilla

Love the ambiance of this location, first thing I noticed was how much natural light the location had. This is counter service with the menu of items on a chalk board near the front. Wide variety of options on the menu. I went with 2 tacos, one chicken and one pork and the pork was definitely my favorite. I do wish there was some sort of cheese/crema/chipotle cream sauce to use. There was an area with sauces/salsas but would have liked some labels on these. Split the queso and chips with the table and they were both great, best chips I've had in a long time! My husband got the steak torta which was HUGE and so delicious. Honestly would get it myself next time. My daughter had the kids quesadilla with chips which was the perfect portion for her. This would be a great place to stop by for some drinks and appetizers after work too!

First time trying Luna Playa, it was really good. The restaurant is beautiful with plenty of sitting, it was easy to order! We placed our order and found a place to sit, the food was brought to us and we were instructed to get whatever salsa we wanted at the salsa bar. We went with chips and salsa, tacos al pastor and tacos de carne asada and it was so good I forgot to take pictures. Will be back for the margarita flights!

Luna Playa is a brand New Mexican restaurant off of Hanes Mall Blvd. Their exterior and interior is modern, clean and overall really minimal which I love. It's all counter service so you walk up, order your food and cocktails, grab some salsa and wait for your order. They've got a smaller menu which is great because it means they can truly focus on each dish without needing to carry to many things. I got the carnitas and asada plate for $16.50. Overall the portions were good, the meat had a good amount of tenderness and flavor and I loved that it came with 5-6 of their homemade tortillas. The table ordered chips and queso Fundido and the chips were a bit stale but they quickly whipped us up a fresh batch and those were delicious! They've got 8-9 salsa options which paired beautifully with our carnitas (I'd love if there were labels on the salsas so we knew what each one was). All in all there were a few things that needed a bit more work but the food is delicious so I'm looking forward to coming back to try the mole.

Chorizo Taco in a single corn tortilla

My first visit to this relatively new restaurant was for lunch recently. They tout the authentic nature of their offerings with a "a strong emphasis on street tacos" while using fresh, high quality ingredients and attention to detail in preparation! Traditional and Authentic are terms the restaurant uses to describe there food! Strong words! The interior is in the modern style, clean and bright, plenty of large windows letting in the sunlight. The walls and ceiling are a bright white further enhancing the brightness, though it is a bit sterile feeling. Based on the layout and the constant loud music, I image this place will be quite noisy when near capacity! This is yet another spot with no table service, you queue up, order up, and pay up. The Salsa Bar, other condiments, napkins, plastic dinner ware, etc are in the front right corner of the restaurant - so you'll need to hike over there, load up and carry your choices to your table. So, you gotta order the tacos, right? And that is what I did. My order was for 4 tacos with sides of rice and beans for a cost of $16.50 - rather expensive for a 4 taco meal with no table service. I chose Birria (add $1), Al pastor, Chorizo , and Carnitas, and decided on the refried beans, rather than black beans. And to get chips and salsa costs another $5!!!!! My order was served in around 20 minutes, a little slow out of the gate first thing in the morning. The portions of beans and rice were quite large (as a separately purchased side each us $4, so some value here) and the beans, while soupy were delicious. The tacos were topped with an abundance of chopped onions and cilantro, and there was a lot of lime wedges and sliced radish to add in! The Birria taco was tender with some decent flavor but there was no consommé. The Al Pastor was flavorful despite having no pineapple chunks (which is the authentic version of this dish), and the Chorizo was ok. The Carnitas Taco was just ok as well, a bit bland, a bit dry. All the tacos benefited from some salt and salsas from the Salsa Bar. There are eight different salas available from that bar, spiciness increasing as you moved from left to right - the two red ones on the far right will light you up! I really liked their Pico like salsa, the pickled red onions, and their verde salsa. The abundance offered by the Salsa Bar and the use of corn tortillas are probably the most authentic aspects of street tacos served here. The last thing I consider after finishing a meal at a new restaurant is: would I come back? And I'm still thinking that through for this spot, but most probably not. The cost structure here is more than a little over the top - 4 tacos for $13.50 - same number of tacos at Los Juanes go for about $9, and they are superior to the ones served here! And no complimentary chips and salsa! The claim as to traditional and authentic has quite a few holes in it. While the tortillas are corn, only 1 tortilla is used for each taco while the traditional construction calls for two. The Al Pastor taco excluded pineapple among other things and the Birria taco is traditionally served with consommé and is richer in flavor. The meat in the Carnitas had none of the flavorful outside crust and was shredded rather that chunked. This place will probably do well, but it is what it is - expensive, service deprived, and there is much here that lacks authenticity.

    Chips and Guac

This place was really cute! Loved the food in here. Definitely a nice quality of food and service. Tacos were a plentiful size and the guacamole was well more every dollar! They gave us a giant bowl and it could've served 4 people for sure, so us two did whatever damage we could. Chis were made from the fresh tortillas in house so they had a nice crunch and great flavor. There are also drinks served here, which was wonderful and had some vast options to choose from. There are many tables inside and also a bar area to sit at. It's very clean inside also. One thing to mention is that they have a salsa bar! There's about 8-10 different choices, but beware, they are not labeled. Typically you could guess that red or orange would be very spicy and they definitely were! I gave a suggestion to the staff that they should try labeling them because of them nearly set my mouth on fire!

Chill spot, away from traffic, and friendly staff! Nice fresh and crunchy chips, they def make them, not a bag of reheated chips, which helps for this nice chunky guacamole. This place deserves a 2nd try for some and a new experience for others!

Don't you just love it when a new place wins you over the first time you go there ? Absolutely love this place! They've done a great job Esthetically inside from what Moe's use to be. Nice and bright and cheery. Loved the big communal table inside Great service, you order at the counter and then pick up, great looking bar menu too which I'll check out next time! They are working on redoing their menu she told me as some things are not in there like the verde enchiladas I ordered, you get three chicken or whatever protein you like , I chose chicken, the verde sauce was so good and the right kinda spice level . You get rice and beans too all for $11!! It was awesome . Loved every bite. Also had the chips and salsa which was really good and house made. My friend had the fried quesadilla. Which again was so good. Lots of toppings and she chose steak. Delicious. Their salsa bar. OMG. I had to try it all and I could grade them from 1-10 but you should just try them all!! The pico de gallo is so fresh and good. The others all had great flavor and spice so try first before you pour over your food. This is one of the best new places to open in awhile in Winston. Continue being this good !!! Definitely try then as soon as you can !

Brand new to Winston Salem is Luna Playa, a causal little Mexican restaurant inspired by the Costa Chica region of Mexico. Walk up counter service and food is then delivered to your table. Self service water available along with a little bar of condiments with a fun selection of fresh made sauces and even pickled onions. (Would love to see those get labels so we know what they are). Luna Playa just opened but they are already getting lots of attention, their marketing person did a great job of hyping them up on social media so Winston was ready to support them as soon as they opened. We found it to be very organized and well run for being brand new. We weren't super hungry so we tried some basics but will be back to try to sopes and mole enchiladas (Winston is lacking in the mole arena). And definitely planning to come back for Sunday brunch to try the Huevos rancheros and chilaquiles ...maybe even the churro French toast. Tacos were served in handmade tortillas, I've made tortillas and cannot even imagine what it takes to make enough to serve in a restaurant so my hats off to them on that! They were nice and soft but still held up to the task of staying together and not falling apart. Not a ton of flavor but that's kind of the point, let the ingredients be the star here. Overall we thought it was a good value with nice portion sizes, well seasoned proteins and a nice spot to pop in for tacos and beer. And as a bonus they are open until 10pm weeknights (yes, even Mondays!) and 11pm Friday and Saturday. Sunday hours are 10-9.

We decided to try this place because they make their own tortillas, but we were very disappointed! We tried most of the menu, their tacos were the worst. Chicken burrito was okay. The place is nice but the food is not that good, especially their tortillas!! The sauces are good but will not return for just that :) Horchata was okay.

A few friends and I were curious about this place and finally decided to go in. The place is very welcoming and very clean and spacious. They had a nice selection of a la carte tacos on the menu. I ordered the barbacoa and chicken tacos along with the watermelon Aguas Fresca Del Dia to drink. My friend got us chips and salsa to share and that was very good (tacos, drink, and salsa!). I definitely want to come back and try the other things on the menu. The staff was very nice and the food came out in a timely manner. Overall, if you're in the mood for some street tacos where can sit and enjoy, this is the place!

Don't walk, RUN!!! Cute place, with great drinks and food, 10/10. The best coconut margarita I have ever tasted. The tacos were delicious as well! I was there for lunch and already planning to come back for dinner.

A few people were playing card games at one table, others were hanging out near the pool table, and a handful were just vibing to the music at the bar. They have an extensive beer list and some fun New Orleans-style tropical cocktails. I was happy to see an Aperol Spritz on the menu--and it was made properly, so I ended up ordering a second one. It seemed like a few friends of the bartender came in and started picking the music, which shifted into a mix of dance tracks and rap. The vibe fizzled out a bit after that, so we decided to head out. Overall, it could be fun little spot, we will check back later. If you're in the area and miss Hoots Brewery, definitely check out Bar Nola. I can only imagine how great their Mardi Gras party must be or Super Bowl day. On the other end of the building, there's a huge open space with beautiful hardwood floors and a another bar. It looks like the kind of venue where you could easily host a party with a live band--maybe they even rent it out for weddings or holiday events, though I'm not sure if it's officially part of the bar. There's also a large outdoor area with a TV and an uncovered bar, but since it was cold last night, everyone stayed inside. It seems like you can take your drinks out into the alleyway between the two buildings. Definitely a beautiful area to be when the weather is nice.
