My other half and I have been craving good quality Tex mex so we decided to try out Lunas, 10/10 absolutely recommend! Our waitress was very kind and constantly came by to make sure we were okay and our cups were always full. We shared the street corn and fajita plate and loved it! Before writing this review, I noticed another poor review claiming the fajita plate was small portioned and overpriced but I disagree! It was actually more than enough for the both of us which was unfortunate because we didn't leave room for dessert. The hunt for great Mexican food on Oahu continues. Luna's is good for the price, but needs significant improvement. I'll start with the bad: The refried beans and the Spanish rice. The beans were practically flavorless. Might as well have just served poi. And the rice was very dry, almost crunchy. If I wanted that crunch, I would have got chips. The good: Great price for a huge burrito. The beef is GREAT, the salsa is made right, and the pico de gallo is actually flavorful and delicious, which is very rare to find in Hawaii. Add to that the friendly service, the location, and the general vibes (the music isn't too loud and it is actually a joy to listen to), and you have a good Tex-Mex place for a good price. I'll most likely come back if I'm in the area and craving a burrito, but I hope they fix the rice and beans. If you're looking for the best Mexican food in Kakaʻako, Lunas is it. We eat here about three times a week, and it never disappoints. The food is consistently fresh, flavorful, and some of the best Mexican cuisine we've had on Oahu. The margaritas are outstanding--perfectly balanced and always a great way to start the meal. And the fajitas are absolutely incredible, arriving sizzling hot with generous portions and amazing flavor every single time. What really keeps us coming back is the consistency, friendly service, and welcoming atmosphere. It feels like a place that genuinely cares about its customers. The only thing that could make Lunas even better would be adding a happy hour. If they had one, we'd probably be there even more often than we already are! Luna's Cantina is a new-ish restaurant on the ground floor of A'ali'i in Kaka'ako. It's a cute tex-mex restaurant. Fajitas were good. But we were told by our server that the larger portion is twice the size of the regular, and so we decided to share the large steak fajitas. Then we saw some regular portions going out to other tables and it didn't look like half of what we had, it looked like almost the same size. Spontaneous dinner in Honolulu, Hawaii... Searching the Yelp app for a Hot New Business that Irene and I both haven't visited yet... we agreed on Luna's Tex Mex Cantina Located on the ground level of the 'A'ali'i Building, on the corner of Robinson Lane and Queen Street, there's free parking at several places. I chose Ward Entertainment Complex, diagonal to the restaurant. It was quite busy with most tables full. It was lively and a bit noisy, but we were able to sit and chat at the bar (counter seats). Our server was the bartender. She was pleasant and efficient! I got the Two Taco Plate which comes with yummy beans and rice. The breaded fish and breaded shrimp were okay. You must check out in Kaka'ako well 'A'ali'i to be exact on the ground floor right across from Tonkatsu Kuro is Luna's Tex Mex Cantina and you know when you're there as it's a very lively and bright corner it brought to the area for sure. With some outside seating as well brings this newly developed neighborhood the more chill and relaxing vibe that it needed amongst the huge condos and construction with a simple menu offer some huge flavors and thank you Nadine for the suggestion. As she had the Fish Tacos I decided on their Birria Tacos which comes with three and can see the bits of char on the tortilla shells which is placed in a taco stand which I do love along with rice and beans with consommé dip and upon receiving my order I was asked if I wanted lime and salsa...YEAH...and was given a couple each a green and red salsa both had nice gentle heat but was very yummy did elevate it all with such flair. The service is very nice and friendly instantly greeted us at the door and offered the seating they had which was just the counter was a nice way to view the bar and kitchen as well which was fast and very efficient. With lots of parking options available it's a great place to stop and relax for snack, meal, drink or all of the above as though it was a busy place it felt very comforting and relaxing after a long day of adulting it was nice time to taco-about it with a friend. Came for the soft opening of this place and had an amazing time here! The inside of this restaurant is beautiful! Very breezy with indoor and outdoor seating, beautiful plates and bar seating. Love the location, it's perfect for a pau hana/happy hour situation. We ordered a wide variety off the menu which were all great! Some highlights: - Ahi tostados: Best thing on the menu imo!! Will 100% reorder again. Ahi was so fresh and comes with generous heaping of avocado on a large yummy chip. - Chips with guacamole and salsa: Good chips, generous serving of guac - Steak fajitas: Steak was delicious, not overdone, soft and flavorful. I came here about a week ago (on June 2nd) with my husband and friend to celebrate our birthdays. There is outdoor seating as well as indoor seating. We were seated indoors, and there were quite a lot of people already dining on a Tuesday evening. We had made reservations ahead of time and were seated right away. The service was attentive, and they checked on us often. The food was pretty good! We started with chips, mild salsa, and a few drinks. Lots of drink options like the standard margaritas and some mixed drinks. The food menu is not extensive, with options like fajitas, birria tacos, enchiladas, and tacos. There are options for kids, too. For dessert, there is one option - homemade churros with vanilla ice cream. It was delicious and a great way to end our meal. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was that there were a ton of flies! I spent most of my time swatting flies away from me and my friend's drinks and food! This was my first time trying this place, and unfortunately, it wasn't a great experience. The staff didn't seem well-prepared or properly trained. They had difficulty figuring out what was included with my order and even charged me for items that should have already been included. The food was also disappointing. I tried this place after walking by it multiple times and I was not disappointed The food is very very good. I had the chorizo queso, beef enchilada, watermelon smash, and churro a la mode and every single thing was amazing. I should note I went for dinner, not lunch, because apparently things are a little different for dinner. Our server Selena was very informative, friendly, and caring which made the meal even better. The ambiance is really laid back. There are no TVs or art on the wall to distract from the meal. The music was not overly loud and all in Spanish, which made things feel inviting. Walking into the space was a nice vibe not too loud and the designs on the plates were cute. The service was quick and they constantly checked on us which is my only positive review. Unfortunately my friends and I have had a terrible experience here and would not return. We had a reservation for 5:00pm on a Thursday 6/4/26 and were seated quickly. We ordered a variety of items to try a little bit of everything. Clearly our Elotes was brought out to us burnt making the corn very sticky and chewy (not enjoyable to eat btw) we ended up sending it back because we could taste nothing but char on corn! The second batch we received was barely any better but by then we were already over it and decided not to send it back again. Have to say though that the Chorozo Queso dip was the best flavor that we had. Hand it to chorizo to be the saving grace of an entire meal. Now I've had birria tacos before and have always enjoyed them for the bold flavor but these were so unflavorful and for $29 for this plate it was not worth when I could go to La Birria and get 3 tacos for $12 with consommé that I can actually taste! This consommé was so watery that you can't taste any flavor and the beef in the tacos itself were not even seasoned, so again, no flavor. I don't like to waste my food so I typically always take the rest of my leftovers home but these tacos weren't worth bringing home to eat later. The steak fajita plate was advertised as being served on a sizzling hot plate but why was the meat cold by the time it was eaten? The steak was very dry and again not seasoned so there was no flavor. We also ordered a steak enchilada (not pictured) which was not bad considering the rest of the order. Side note: we had asked for no cilantro on the tacos and 2 appetizers and was our only request but there was cilantro all on the queso dip. We had confirmed with the waitress before she walked away what our order was and which items to not have cilantro on. The cherry on top was that after we were seated there was a table to the left of us with some "influencer" with a camera and lights making promotional content for the restaurant. Now I don't really have a problem with people who make content, however I don't like being in pictures and videos without consent. Getting back on topic, I could clearly see that they had ordered all 4 appetizer options (including the elotes) and noticed that their order was a bright yellow, un-burnt, order of Elotes with a slice of lime included.... Not to be that person but we didn't get a slice of lime on either of our Elotes plates. Just the lack of quality control of the food that was served to guests in comparison to the food given to the "influencer" table was baffling. We were just normal patrons who chose to try a new restaurant that had good reviews but seeing how we were treated in comparison makes me believe that all the 5 star reviews were from "influencers" who got obviously better treatment than the normal restaurant patrons. I don't like to give negative reviews but this one deserved to be shared. I usually think of Mexican cuisine to have bold flavors and strong seasoning so it was surprising to not get any of those flavors. I hope they can re-look at their menu, quality control of the food, and how they manage an "influencer" table to the normal patrons actually choosing to dine with them. Luna's Tex-Mex Cantina is a new Ward Village spot at the base of ʻAʻaliʻi, and it mostly gets the important things right. The room is modern without trying too hard: patterned tile behind the open kitchen, a long bar, dark ceiling slats, concrete columns, and wood tables that make the place feel cleaner and more composed than the average themed Mexican restaurant. It looks designed by someone who has seen the neighborhood, which is better than looking designed for Instagram The food was solid across the board. The chips and guac were very good, with chips that seemed housemade and thicker than the usual brittle store-bought style, which helped them feel like part of the meal instead of filler. The large steak fajitas was certainly impressive looking (great for a family style dinner), and for $68, did come with a decent amount of steak. The chicken enchiladas were surprisingly good too -- we actually thought it was more memorable than the steak fajitas. Margaritas at $14 felt fair by Ward standards, and more important, they were actually good For 3 people, with steak fajitas, chicken enchiladas, chips and guac, and 2 drinks each, the bill was $200 before tax and tip. Pricey, yes, but not absurd for this part of town. Service was good, though still in that newly opened phase where the staff checks in so often it starts to feel like a group project. I GOT FOOD POISONING LAST NIGHT FROM THIS RESTAURANT. I would've called, but they don't open until 5p. My friends and I went to Luna's after the UFC fight last night. They ordered birria tacos and i got the shrimp tacos which were just 2 tacos for $26. The server was nice, but our silverware had dried bits of food on it so we asked the server for a new set, it never came. Lets go into the food... My friends received their two orders of birria tacos after 15-20 min. The flavors weren't the best considering the price point. After 10 min of sitting there watching my friends eat, our server comes up to us asking if we need anything, i said, "yeah, my food." She has a surprised look on her face then runs to the back and comes out saying it'll be right out. I work in the restaurant industry in management, i know what that means, someone either forgot to make the order/submit it, or it was given to another table. 3 min pass and out comes my food, the breading super oily and shrimp was tough (my food was rushed). I take a few bites off the first taco and notice how oily and thick the breading is. I started to eat my rice and beans and find dried up beans that looks like cardboard in my food. I tell the server about how unhappy i was about this and she said "oh I'll tell my manager" and that was it. I only ate bites of one taco and couple bites of the sides. No resolution, or nothing. Mind you, i don't drink alcohol, so the only thing that would've made me sick was the food. Fast forward, i get home not feeling well and pass out to bypass feeling uncomfortable. I end up waking up every hour to run to the bathroom to either defecate or throw up. Lovely, i have food poisoning. It's the beginning of the week and now i have to call off work. Never would've thought our $200 bill supporting a new restaurant would end up with service and experience like this. Sad to say, we will never return back to this restaurant. read more

My two best friends and I went last minute to a Saturday night dinner here. First off, staff from the hostess to managers are amazing. It was jamming at 7, so we decided to sit at the bar. It was awesome to watch the food come out as it was fresh and helped us decide what to order. The margs were amazing & the food was fantastic. Side note - during our apps a glass broke near our food & drinks - the staff replaced everything without hesitation. Meh.. I called last month to reserve a table for 10 people . I couldn't do it on their OpenTable app bc it had exceeded the party size of 6. Whoever picked up the phone to assist me was very dopey and incompetent.. and that's being kind. I had to repeat myself at least 5 times (The date, time, and party size). Actually, I repeated myself so many times that my Husband poked his head out of the other room to see what the issue was. I even made sure to call close to opening so it wouldn't be loud (apparently they have a Mariachi band). This was a very important dinner as the President from our Company was flying in from Japan and favors Mexican cuisine. Weeks go by and something in me said to doublecheck the reservation. After trying multiple times to get through, the same dizzy individual who helped me the first time couldn't find my reservation lol made excuses as to why it may have not gone through etc.. he offers to make the reservation,again, and that was that. Today is the day of our dinner. I screenshot the Opentable reservation prepared to send it to everyone just as a confirmation and then I notice he made the reservation for 6people instead of 10 lol. I cancelled the entire thing and made a new reservation at Cino which is a couple shops down and where we normally hold our dinners. I've worked in every position FOH and BOH in restaurants and I'm sorry but if you can't hire a proper Host that can use their brain or just have basic listening comprehension.. The steak was super juicy and tender which I was pleasantly surprised by. We finished the meal with churros to share. It's a generous portion with a huge serving of French vanilla ice cream. The prices aren't cheap, but for 3 people the fajitas only end up being like $22/person which isn't crazy. The elote was $15 which is the same price as the old Mexican spot in the neighborhood that shut down. The place was crowded on a Monday at 6:15pm! Completely full, so I'm glad we had a reservation. It's a fun vibe and nice interior. They have outdoor tables too which were mostly empty despite the bustling indoor areas. Definitely worth checking out! I should also mention service was great. Came here on 5/18 on its third day of self opening and thank goodness it wasn't busy yet. They were definitely still figuring out the wait staff and the food orders but that is what was expected. We ordered the nonalcoholic slushy's both the POG and pink strawberry lime. Highly highly highly suggest getting the pog one for kids and adults. Was an amazing combination of sweet and tangy. We also ended up ordering the Elotte, Birria Tacos , the fish tacos, and the green sauce enchilada. My all-time fave and the item I will be returning for is the green sauce enchilada. The sauce was a creamy rich, tangy full-bodied sauce that went perfectly well with the crunchy cheesy chicken enchilada. Even the rice was super fluffy and the beans weren't super salty. Other notable items were definitely the fish tacos, which were and had the lightest breading I've had in a while. But then I heard there was a Japanese chef so that made so much sense. My kids favorite was the Elote corn. Super creamy covered in cheese a little bit of Tang and Tahini. Birria taco was least favorite item but still was good. Meat was not stringy. Overall bad experience. I don't think I've ever been told no at a restaurant more than I have here. There was no steak for my taco's, no cilantro lime rice, no margaritas, the salsa I asked for is too spicy so I can't have it? I'm fine with being told no, but at least suggest something in its place. Or if it would be a wait for something tell me and let me decide, don't make that decision for me. Staff seemed under trained. Not familiar with their POS system, got lost in the language settings. The one staff member who told me no the most needed more restaurant experience. Very friendly and quick. Lime margaritas were fine very well, and the queso had fantastic flavor. We shared the chicken enchiladas with green sauce and the flavor was perfectly spicy. I was a little thrown by the thinness of the refried beans but they had a smoky flavor that I enjoyed. My only critique is the temperature of the food. I'm a native Texan, so living here in Hawaii I really miss the food of my people. This is the best Tex Mex I've had on the island! The fajitas were top notch, as well as the chorizo queso and the regular margaritas. They're still expanding the menu and hours, but so far we will definitely be back. It's refreshing to see a different style of cuisine in the Ward area that is dominated by Asian restaurants. This is a great location as it's breezy and open. There are even tables outside but I would recommend them only for drinks/people watching since the strong breeze can make it challenging to eat a full meal. Saturday night. Right at 1700 opening. Immediately sat down and immediately presented with water. Chips and salsa ordered as well as the chorizo queso. Salsa choices were pico de gallo (my favorite) and the red one. Red one is actually orange and spicy and tasty! Pico is fresh fresh fresh. Chips are seasoned with salt and elote seasoning...fresh and crisp. Chorizo queso was hot and perfect. Main was combo fajitas (steak and chicken) and boy were they fresh and piping hot! Just as expected. Plate of accompaniments was pico, beans, rice, cheese, sour cream, and avocado (fresh and big chunks included - not the blended garbage off a Sysco truck) and were delicious. Comes with 3 tortillas. Ordered extra tortillas at $3 charge for 3 tortillas. Second order of chips and salsa ordered. This time with green (salsa verde) and pico. Only 2 areas to improve: verde salsa tastiness was sweet but texture was unappealing (mucus like?) and steak should strips should bd cut in half to assist in the taco making. Churros and ice cream were great. Space is a bit tight but they made it work. Outdoor is in a wind tunnel so hit or miss on the wind. Love that there's a big bar. Prices are high but so is rent. First time coming to Luna's. We came at 5:15pm, got seated right away without reservations. But it got busy and packed real quick. Our server was very attentive and patient with explaining the menu. She came over several times throughout the course of our dinner so see if we needed anything. We ordered the chips and guac/ hot salsa. I got the chicken enchiladas with green sauce.
