I was hoping to like this place more than I did because a friend of mine comes here all the time and highly recommended it. I ordered the Thai tea with less sugar and the beef dumplings. My friend got the soup dumplings and the bok choy. The drink with the snack attached to the top is definitely the gimmick here, and I'll admit it's pretty cute. It's convenient to carry around, and the little smiley face toothpicks they give you are a fun touch. The only downside is that the lid pops off pretty easily, so I'd be careful walking around with it. As for the food, it was... fine. Nothing was bad enough that I wouldn't eat it, but nothing really stood out either. The beef dumplings were my biggest disappointment. They were quite greasy, and the filling had that loose texture you get when there's a lot of fat mixed into the meat. As you eat them, the fat renders out, leaving the filling a little mushy instead of juicy. I took some home, and once they cooled down, the grease solidified again, which didn't make them any more appealing. My friend's soup dumplings were also just okay. They weren't very soupy, and the wrappers felt a little dry. The bok choy was fresh, but most of the flavor came from the oyster sauce served on the side. On its own it was fairly plain. The staff were efficient, but they didn't seem too interested in answering questions. It felt more like they wanted to keep the line moving, which I can understand if they're busy. One thing I did appreciate was how clean and bright the restaurant was. It felt well maintained and was a pleasant place to sit and eat. After a long day exploring Philly, and having been away from home for a couple weeks at this point, we were looking forward to having some comfort Asian food. We sort of stumbled upon Luscious Dumplings. My partner mentioned that it sounded familiar, and when we looked it up later, it's a chain, with restaurants in California as well, and a Bib Gourmand to its name. We got a beef tendon soup (this was really good) as well as some bok choy. Coming from LA, we appreciated the prices. These are probably the reasons this place isn't a 1 or 2 star for us. Ok, so. We also got an order of the vegan dumplings...and these were just....very sad. They are supposed to be 小籠包s, but there was no soup in them! They were really dry, the skin was REALLY hard and dry and CRACKED, which should just never happen. I think these were hands down the worst dumplings I have ever been served in my whole life. And my family is from Taiwan. We eat a lot of dumplings. And then. On top of this, when I told one of the servers that the dumplings were subpar and asked them to be removed from the check, he curtly told me "不能退" ("no returns"). Uhhhh.... Then later, another (nicer) server came to check on us, and I said the dumplings were inedible. He said he would check with the manager, but came back and basically repeated the "no returns" line. Then yet later, the first (dour) server came with the check, I asked again if it could be removed from the check, he said no. I asked again. I showed again him the cracked bottoms and the dry, hard, inedible skin of all of the dumplings. Finally, he's like, "we can exchange it." At this point, I don't want this to be exchanged. It's just not good. So finally, FINALLY. He took it off the tab. Look. I want these dumpling places to do well. I was just so disappointed to feel the absolute lack of pride in the food that they serve, and their unwillingness to take accountability for it. So, hopefully someone reads this and can make some changes to food quality and make sure they are even across all of their restaurants. The restaurant itself was spacious, well-lit, and comfortable. Bathrooms were clean, and we didn't deal with parking here. If I lived in Philly, I would not come back here. And given that there are oodles of amazing places for dumplings and noodles in LA, most with better service, I doubt we will be going to their other locations either. My friends are regulars here and recommended we come here one night! We were seated immediately and the restaurant is very cute and clean and the bathrooms are very clean and have paper towels. We ordered two orders of scallion pancake, and also got the sesame chicken with rice, angus beef noodle soup, the szechuan pickled pork noodle soup, and smashed cucumbers with garlic sauce. It's a relatively short walk from the Liberty Bell to Chinatown - thus making it an ideal place for tourists to visit for food. I have been meaning to visit this restaurant because it has a good reputation for good food. The menu is very comparable to another smaller soup dumpling chain. Everything was absolutely delicious and fresh. The beef in the noodle soup was tender and the cold wood ear dish was my favorite so far. The soup dumplings were also very good, although not the best (7.5/10). I was however surprised to see that the pan fried buns were just the same as the soup dumplings, not the more pillowy, yeastier, sweet doughy bun that is the cousin of a traditional soup dumpling. When we asked for the check, it was presented to us on a mobile device that the server held on to, giving us all of 5 seconds to review and pay. I've been here a handful of times and every time it's been solid - the food always tastes fresh and the prices are very reasonable. My go-to items are the pork belly noodle soup, tendon noodle soup, and the boiled dumplings. The pork soup dumplings here are pretty good as well. The scallion pancake was thin and crispy, and the soup dumplings were perfect. What really steals the show, though, are the boiled and pan fried dumplings. I've tried a few things here and some dishes are better than others. The seaweed with spicy garlic is delicious, and the soup dumplings are are very large with lots of flavor. Was looking forward to checking out Luscious Dumplings for some time now. There are very few Asian restaurants specializing in Taiwanese cuisine in Philly, and we were hoping Luscious Dumplings could be the one that can satisfy our Taiwanese food needs now and in the future. My husband and I ordered a few of theirs dishes online including the pan-fried pork dumplings, the scallion pancake, the mushroom meat sauce rice bowl, and their signature dish - the Angus Stewed Beef Noodle. Everything tasted just okay to us. Not terrible, but not great either. Everything tasted very homely, in fact, too homely for our tastes. One thing that I did like though, was their scallion pancake is a lot thinner than other Chinese restaurants. The food items here are also priced very reasonably, and perfectly portioned for one meal. The California location might have been awarded the Bib Gourmand award in 2021, but the Philly location definitely does not taste like Bib Gourmand award level. The food was very delicious especially the sesame chicken but... the waiters were very rude, Their body language was very passive aggressive, they were very rude in a non verbal man. The soup tasted like they didn't try. But then no one sat us either, which we assumed it was a seat yourself place and just sat down. I don't like to assume things but sometimes when you look different than people, there's a prejudice that takes place. Would give this spot 3.5 stars but rounding up to 4. I came with one other person for a Saturday lunch because I was particularly craving chive pockets (jiucai hezi) and this was the only place I found that had the item aside from the big dim sum places and I wanted a more low-key meal. The restaurant is bright and spacious inside and was decently populated when we arrived but there were plenty of tables - in fact, our server moved us from a two-top to a four-top because we "ordered a lot," haha. Service was good overall. The two of us ordered chive pockets, scallion pancakes, fried beef dumplings, and steamed fish dumplings; they of course have the more classic pork dumplings but given their more extensive dumpling menu I wanted to try some of the more uncommon ones. Overall, I'd say the food was just fine. The chive pockets satisfied my hankering but I do wish they had more egg and glass noodle to balance out the texture, and the way they were partially but not completely cut in half made them a bit hard to pick up and eat. The two dumpling orders were alright, with a thick chewier skin that I didn't mind though I know some prefer more delicate skins. The scallion pancake was also alright - they were pretty thin and chewy with just a bit of crisp, similar to how I'd make them at home, though when I get them at restaurants I personally prefer them more puffy and deeply-fried. The sweet scallion pancake dip did make for a good dumpling dip though. Prices were somewhat more expensive than other places I've had similar food, though I guess it goes towards the more extensive dumpling menu and the full table service and it's still not expensive. Overall, a solid place to satisfy a dumpling craving or get an easy Chinatown meal without being overwhelmed by a bigger menu, but nothing really wowed me. I read an inquirer article saying how this was a Michelin recommended restaurant and would be open soon! I think it's been opened only a couple weeks when we stopped in! No wait when we got there, no reservations needed but it filled up quickly. Ambience is nice, clean and spacious. Waitstaff were super friendly and spoke English. We ended up at a table where the HVAC had water condensation dripping on us but they were quick to offer us a different table, we declined and just kept the food away from the water drops lol. Since it was just 2 of us, couldn't order as much as we would have me wanted but we tried! The piggy custard buns were delish - maybe a little more custard and it would have been perfect. The scallion pancakes were meh. Interesting they tasted like a mix between scallion pancakes and naan - I prefer the super crispy version and this one was softer. The soup dumplings were the star of the show! We sadly only got one order and chose the snow crab and pork ones, sooooooo good! The dough is lighter, the broth and filling were well seasoned and tasty - would have liked just a bit more broth and it would also have been perfect. Had a very satisfying meal here. The dumplings were delicious. I tried the boiled and pan-fried dumplings, and I like the boiled ones better. The pan-fried ones looked smaller than in the picture, and the filling was a bit too salty for me. The boiled dumplings were perfect though. The dumpling skin was just the right thickness (not too thick, but also not wonton-wrapper-thin), and the filling was flavorful and juicy. There were probably 1-2 shrimp pieces in each filling. The scallion pancake was also so good. It was flaky (like a roti) and really not too greasy, which I appreciate because scallion pancakes usually are really greasy. They were very fragrant and just made perfectly. The beef tendon was also good. It had a good chew, and wasn't cooked down too much, which is how I like it. It was on the saltier side though. The mushroom meat noodles weren't bad, but probably my least favorite thing out of everything we ordered. Everything else was just really good. The mushroom mix was a bit sour (and not from the picked mustard). The noodles were a bit overcooked and a little bit too thick for my liking. The clear broth it came with was fragrant, light, and comforting though. Would love to return. Food was delicious and satisfying. Out of everything, my favorites were the boiled dumplings and scallion pancakes. Service was great, and atmosphere was clean and calm (they were playing some jazz music surprisingly). I did find it odd though that the servers rushed to give us the check and made us sign when we were still eating, even though the store was 90% empty (we came in at 11am Saturday). The pan-fried chicken dumplings lacked seasoning and had a strange flavor that made us wonder if we'd received an order of the fish dumplings. Close to 3.5 stars. We went to Luscious Dumplings over the weekend. We ordered a few appetizers like marinated lotus root, wood ear mushrooms, and broccoli salad. All of them are pretty good. For the main dish, we had the stewed beef rice bowl which is excellent, the beef is tender and well seasoned. The sweet egg custard dumplings are now one of my favorite desserts in Chinatown! So freaking cute and delicious! They are filled with yummy egg custard and the filling is just the right proportion, not less or more. Service was quick and no nonsense - typical of Chinatown. the beef tendon rice bowl was tasty. The mala seaweed was good as well. The soup dumplings weren't good at all. They only had little amount of soup in them. Pretty bad quality considering they are supposed to be known for their dumplings. We added a beef bun to the order but it never arrived. Not sure what happened to it, we didn't get charged for it, so it wasn't a big deal. The interior was clean. Most likely not coming back again. read more
