Simply the best bakery in the region. I buy their sourdough each week at Odd Provisions or Each Peach in DC but you can find them at an array of quality markets and grocers in the DMV. Came across Lyon bakery brand at MOMS ORGANIC market. I couldn't be more pleased. I come from a very European background of eating, so my tastebuds aren't like most Americans. I'm also from LA, and we have plenty of amazing bakeries, bread shoppes and wonderful food all around. I've had a tough time here in DC these last few months- the food quality just isn't the same, and the breads have all sucked. Thankfully I found mother's market, which I LOVE- and that first day of finding the market, I went right for the local baguette & sourdough. BOTH of which are fantastic. They are fresh, they last forever too! I can't believe how long my sourdough lasted! Anyway, if you're looking for the best bread in DC, you'd better get Lyon, they won't disappoint! We really enjoy the fresh sourdough and olive bread each time we come to the Union Market in Washington DC. We always get some fresh vegetables, an assortment of interesting cheeses, and a condiment or two (don't give us that look... mayo is a good thing!) and we're set for lunch all week! read more

This bakery in Union Market is not just in Union Market. If you have been to a local restaurant that serves fabulous sliced, hearth-baked bread, you have very likely consumed a produce from Lyon Bakery. I was delighted to know that they source to so many local restaurants, but more importantly, I am delighted that if I am at Union Market that I can get my own loaf in its entirety! These loaves are fabulously baked artisan creations that look beautiful and taste wonderful. There are some classic choices here that showcase the talent of this boulangerie, like the sourdough, the baguette and the pain levain. When it's good, you'll know by the open crumb structure, thin but crispy crust and a moist inside that can be torn apart or sliced without crumbling. The flavors have been well developed with their starters, giving their bread a chance to contend with some great bakeries on the West Coast or further north of DC (i.e. New York!). This bread is of the quality that when you slice it, you may just want to smell it to recognize what good bread smells like. Yes, it's complete with appealing aroma, crust, flavor, crumb and texture. I also appreciate that when you are at the market, all the ingredients are listed right there for you to read, so you don't have to ask too many questions before deciding which loaf you'd like. Be careful though - as you read the ingredients, you may recognize how you'd like to buy several loaves... reason for a party! It is rare to find a decent bread bakery here in DC, and I would place this in the top 2 or 3. The walnut raisin is such a treat - a slice by itself is satisfying enough, but, toast it to make it warm and crisp, wow. Their breads are great alone, accompaniment for meals or as sandwich bases. As far as I know Lyon Bakery isn't building their business as a retail bakery like Firehook or some of the bagel establishments. Instead they have a burgeoning B2B business model that likely includes some of these 1-Star reviewers favorite haunts. Super in love with Lyon Bakery! The brioche buns, the sourdough loaf, the burger buns are all exceptional. My biggest regret is getting 4 of the cheddar and jalapeno buns. OH. MY. GOSH. I should've gotten 20. They are so perfectly baked, with these cheese pockets and a nice gentle sprinkling of jalapeno through the buns. Plain, slightly warmed in the microwave and buttered, as my breakfast sandwich bun or, if you want your mind completely blown-- as a grilled cheese with tomato-- these things are one of the best bread products my mouth has been lucky enough to chew. read more

Where I come from, there's literally a bakery on every corner. The SF Bay has many manifold iterations of alters to bread making, creating a culture of bread snobbery, or (more sympathetically) a deep and abiding love for leavening culture. From Acme to Semifreddie's to Grace to Vital Vittles (whom I drove a bread truck for in my youthful days), in Northern California we worship our yeast + flour based foods, with intense loyalties and attachments to match. Washington DC's bread offerings have been quite meager in my one year here. There's Pain Quotidienne's decent baguettes that I suspect are flown in frozen from France, some OK stuff at Au Bon Pain, and really quite miserable stubs of bread from Trader Joe's. So it was with serendipitous joy during one meal @ Logan Tavern that I bit into a sumptuous, wholesome, tasty piece of bread served in a pre-dinner basket. After devouring two baskets to satiate my long neglected jonesing for quality baguette, I asked the waiter where the bread was from. "Lyon Bakery" he said, "but they only sell wholesale direct to restaurants, no retail." After a couple somewhat sly attempts to impersonate a very small restauranteur calling Lyon direct in need of "one or two" baguettes, I resolved that I'd have to go back to Logan and order meals just to taste their fantastic bread. But lo and behold, walking through the main entrance of Union Station, there's these new fandagoed farmer's market style stands flanking the in & out commuters. Mistaking them at first as a gimmick faux artisanal food sellers who jack up the prices to fool rich urbanites into parting with their $, I almost walked by the bread stand which read out in little God-sent letters "Lyon's Bakery." $2 Baguettes that are literally unmatched in the DMV! It's a price/flavor that is both jaw-dropping and mouth-watering for this California boy to consider. Do at least grab one of their baguettes on your way to and fro from Union Station next time you're there, you shan't be disappointed! read more

I have to agree with the first reviewer (dagnabbit!) that this bread is GOOD. I picked up a bag of rolls (4 for $2!) and a whole wheat baguette ($3!) for a dinner party and was absolutely pleased! Stopped by Union Market this morning and came upon Lyon Bakery. Purchased the Kalamata Olive loaf. Absolutely delicious!! They even slice it for you! Less expensive than Atwater's that I purchase at the SS Farmer's Market. Will definitely return to purchase more bread! read more

Really subpar. Have tried pretty much all of their breads. The "sourdough" one has no sourdough taste to speak of. Tastes like plain old Wonder-esque bread. The other stuff is equally blah--walnut raisin, olive...just a really poor bakery. read more

Great bread and great prices! I've been buying their bread for years and have never been disappointed. I prefer to buy in Union Market because I believe it's fresher, but I have also purchased from Glen's Market in Shaw. Sometimes the selection is slim later in the day on weekends so get there early if you need something specific. read more

Went to Odd Provisions in Columbia Heights (DC) and picked up some pretzel rolls from Lyon Bakery to go with the curry lentil soup and cold brew coffee. Perfect combo. Excellent rolls. Would definitely get again. read more

This is by far the best bread I've had in 3 years living in DC, at unbeatable prices. At $3 for a loaf of jalapeno-cheddar (great for making sandwiches) or $4 forwalnut-raisin (absolutely packed with both -- I don't understand how they can make any money on this), the value is amazing. Unfortunately, I've only seen them selling during the summer at the pop-up stands just outside Union Station. This year, their last say is October 31, but I was told you could continue to get bread after that at their rather inconvenient location on R Street. So maybe they now sell to the pubic? Either way, I always look forward to being able to buy their bread in the summer at Union Station. read more

Not available retail, but a previous reviewer spotted a stand at the Union Station farmers market. As soon as I get the chance I will be making a trip out there to pick up the BEST bread I have ever had in DC. My introduction to Lyon was at my farmers market where the bread was being used to deliver samples of cured meat. It was towards the end of the day and I was given 4 baguettes for free. Mind you, they were day old baguettes and DEELISHOUS! To revive day old bread, simply sprinkle with water and pop it in the toaster. read more

Not a fan of this bread. Bread Furtz quality is much better. Tried a few different loaves three different visits and was not impressed. It was't fresh, didn't taste that great. When are we going to get more artisan bread bakers back in the District? Frustrated. read more

Ran into this bakery/stand last year. It's a small wholesaler that has a stand outside Union Station during the late spring and summer. Crazy good bread. Jalapeno & Cheese sour dough is money. Since the ingredients are so fresh, the shelf life is not that long. read more

I am a huge fan of good bakery items, no paleo carb-haters allowed here. If you see a stand for this at your local Farmer's Market, grab it without hesitation; if you have never experienced a slice of high-gluten bread toasted with butter, it should be on your bucket list, as it is a piece of heaven. I get a loaf this bread each week in my From the Farmer produce delivery, in which unfortunately we don't get to pick what kind, but I've had the sesame semolina (perfection), marble rye (oy, so gut!), whole grain (with pepitas?!) I am not a fan of olives so I refused the olive loaf week, and am still waiting for the walnut raisin to make its appearance. I only wish we could try their rolls (another Farm delivery service has them.) Note, these loaves are HUGE, but worth every penny ($8), and I've never had one go stale (it never lasts that long!) read more

Went for the first time and picked up the rosemary bread. A perfect rosemary bread for less than $5. What more can I ask for?

Disappointing. This morning I purchased a "baguette" at the Lyon counter and found it disappointing. It was not a true baguette having discovered hat the bread had whole wheat flour and other ingredients that do not belong in a baguette. A baguette should have water, salt flour (levain) and that is it. Why fool wth other ingredients? The crust is not crisp.....I will stick with Bread Furst's version. read more

Pleasant Pops Farmhouse Market & Cafe, 1781 Florida Avenue NW, sells Lyon Bakery bread. Brought home a small rustic baguette today. Great flavor and chew. Will return to Pleasant Pops, if not for the pops, definitely for the Lyon Bakery bread. Best I've had in DC. read more

One of the great pleasures of the long, hot summer of 2010 was buying bread from the Lyon Bakery stand at Union Station.
