Lyons Village Park is a great spot, especially in the summer heat. There's a nice shaded pavilion with picnic tables, perfect for taking a break from the sun. The playground is awesome and accommodating to a range of age groups. The park isn't entirely fenced in, but it's fenced for the most part, which gives some peace of mind. It's a bit smaller than Hayes Park, but we usually make a loop and swing by both when we're out. They pair well together! read more

What a great little park! I had an errand nearby and my little girl deserved some playtime. This park has plenty of swings for adults and for kids. There's a huge sand pit and three different play structures. Not to mention a basketball court! It also has a covered area with plenty of picnic tables. My daughter particularly love the swing and sandbox. There's lots of good climbing for older kiddos, too! I will mention that the parking is quite limited. This is an adorable playground and spray pad located in Lyon Village. My favorite part? The incredibly pretentious iron gates that you must grace as you enter with your children, feeling a bit like Kate & Wills with baby George for a moment. I showed up around 10:30 on a Saturday morning expecting the place to be packed and the spray pad to be going. No dice. Only a couple kids here and I soon found out the water jets don't start until noon. Come on Arlington county, you know kids under 5 are up at the crack of dawn on weekends, much to their parent's chagrin. It's a cute park with a nice sand box but the small splash pad wasn't enough to wait another 45 minutes so we split to Drew Park down the street, which has a much more sizeable spray pad and nice playground equipment. read more

This is a good local park for kids. They have 4 diaper swings and (I think) 4 regular swings. They also have slides of different heights along with other activity items for kids. There are basketball hops and tennis courts to one side that is a big plus for a local park. The big draw for this park is the water park area - plenty of sprinklers and water jets that the kids love. Make sure to bring swim clothes/ diapers and towels coz you know the kids will get wet during the summer months! read more

Great little park!! PROS: covered picnic table/seating area, water area for the summer, "big" kid area/equipment; 5-12) and little kid area/equipment (2-5 years), 4, YES count 'em, 4 baby swings (most parks I've seen around here only have 2) and 3 big kid swings, sandbox, nice tennis courts. "Rock climbing" features on play equipment. Entire park is WELL fenced in. Quiet, suburban area. CONS: 1. I don't know what genius designed/landscaped this park, but he/she didn't have kids...they put the sandbox, which is more of a "sandpit" in the middle of the playground which is wood chips/mulch, hence all the kids put the wood chips in the sandbox, therefore it is more of a wood chip box/pit rather than sand. 2.The little kid area is REALLY high up on some parts and kids could easily walk/fall right off the edge at the top...you MUST keep a CLOSE on on your little guys, I mean like hand holding & on being right on top of their every move. The slide is also VERY high for a little kid slide, you can't put them at the top and catch at the bottom unless you are extremely tall, I'm pretty tall and I could not do it. read more

Lyon Village Park is a great little 1.5 acre wooded park located just north of Clarendon. They have one full basketball court and two tennis courts, which are all well maintained and lit for evening play. Lyon Village Park has a very lively neighborhood vibe, which gets amped up when they turn on the "Sprayground" over Memorial Day weekend. The "Sprayground" is a masterpiece of summertime playground fun. It flings water from several different high powered sprinklers, while also dropping a couple gallons out of a bucket on a counterweighted swivel every 30 seconds or so. For all the kids not lucky enough to have access to a pool it is a godsend, for all of us adults without children it is a temptation. How the hell can I play in the water too without looking like a complete moron? Maybe ninja -style at dusk, when all the little nose pickers are inside eating their mushy peas. read more

Great park in a beautiful neighborhood. We came for the splash pad (which is small, but clean and fun) and also enjoyed the playground.

One of the problems with Yelp appears to be the inability to give negative votes for an existing review. Hence, we have Dee G.'s rant against Lyon Village Park, and rather than noting that his or her review is crazy through a vote, my only recourse is to post a rebuttal. Let me start by describing the park. Most of the park is a standard, albeit somewhat big, playground with swings and a large sandbox. There's also a large picnic shelter, a couple of tennis courts and a basketball court. But the primary draw, for most people with kids, is the water part of the park. It's about 20' by 20' with about five fountains that periodically spray water up in the air and a few buckets and showers that drop water down to the ground once they fill. You have to push a button every few minutes to get the water flowing. The kids love it. I agree with Dee on the following points. First, the lack of bathrooms could be a problem. But it seems unfair to hold this park up to a standard that isn't met for most parks - have you ever tried to find a bathroom on the National Mall? Second, it could get a bit crowded especially because the water part isn't that big. But the crowd that really loves this part of the park is between 3 and 5 years of age and doesn't have a terribly long attention span. Consequently, I've never encountered anything that would be a "large" crowd in my visits to the park. Now, let's consider Dee's snippy comments about the park. (His or her comments are amazingly redundant, so I'll boil them down to a few common themes.) (1) It's a waste of water. Well, it's not as if we live in a desert. And there are many more instances of "wasted water" (again, we don't live in a desert) than one that provides entertainment for children. For example, if we're concerned about wasted water, then the first thing I'd shut down would be the FDR Memorial. More on point for this park, the fountains require one to push a button every five minutes, so it's not as if it's pumping water regardless of whether or not it's raining or how many people are around. (2) It's dirty with kids in poopy diapers sitting in the water. Dee must have had a bad experience at this park with dirty diapers. As I noted earlier, in my experience, most of the kids who enjoy this park are 3-5 years old, so they're out of diapers. In fact, I've never seen a kid below the age of one who enjoys this park (most kids of that age don't like having water dumped on their head.) Could a "diaper event" happen in such a setting? I suppose, but that's what happens at kids' parks. Sand and other stuff in the water? I've never seen any, but I suppose it could happen because that's what it's like when you go to a kids' park, especially one that happens to include a sandbox. (3) It's too crowded. As noted earlier, I suppose that this could happen too. But my experience is that most kids don't have a long attention span for the park, and the parents are fairly responsible regarding the behavior of their kids. And if you feel that someone is behaving inappropriately (which also applies to diaper issues), bring it up to the parents. Personally, I like this park a lot. And my kids (2.5 years and 10 months old) love it. It's a fun place to go with kids when it's hot, especially given the variety of entertainment that's available. Actually, what makes me irritated is that I have to drive to NoVa to find parks like this, but that's what I get for living in the District. Either Dee had a really bad experience and needed to vent, or s/he's someone who doesn't understand, or simply doesn't like, kids and the parks that cater to them. read more

I don't think the Lyon Village Park is so cool. I don't think the County's doing anyone a service by putting amusement park features in such a tiny neighborhood park. Sixty or seventy people in a park with an interactive play fountain and no bathroom is not so cool. 9 and 10 year old naked children running around the park and the street is not so cool. People throwing food and trash and sandbox sand and mulch in the water is not so cool. Upwards of 30 people at a time in that tiny little interactive play fountain is not so cool. The water from that tiny little interactive play fountain draining all over the grass and basketball court is not so cool. Huge mud puddles are not so cool. Unless you like tripping hazards and mosquitoes and mud getting dragged into the interactive play fountain. People leaving soiled diapers and wipes around is not so cool. Unless you like fecal matter. That cute little interactive play fountain sends 15,000 gallons of water to waste, straight down the drain, every day. Arlington considers itself green. That's appalling. People running the interactive play fountain just to watch it run, and sending at least 60 gallons a minute down the drain, is not so cool. Running it during rainstorms and sending 60 gallons a minute down the drain is not so cool. Spending close to $17,000 per season on water alone is not so cool. Busing in campers to an overcrowded park with an interactive play fountain and no toilets is not so cool. The amount of sandbox sand and mulch and grime and detritus and food and used band-aids and chewing gum in that interactive play fountain feature is not so cool. Not having a person in charge to clean up and keep order at a wildly popular interactive play fountain is not so cool. Kids sitting in diapers in the water have accidents. Not having someone there to deal with fecal accidents is not so cool. Constant disregarding of the posted "safety" rules is not so cool. People (not just kids) riding bikes and scooters through the water where babies are playing is not so cool. An interactive play fountain deserves a home that can accommodate it. The users deserve to have more space, grass and shade, adequate parking, flush toilets, soap and water, a changing room, and a person in charge to clean up and keep order and keep the kids' clothes on and cool things down when the kids get too excited, as they will tend to do. read more
