M & J's bistro was an incredible find, and I hate that it took us two years to finally eat there! Their menu is a very solid steakhouse + American dining menu, cleverly divided into Steaks, Italian, Southern, Vegetarian sections, named for neighborhoods in San Francisco. If it surprises you to find such a gem located in a strip mall anchored by Big Lots & Ace Hardware, well, us too. We were skeptical but I had been so impressed by their online menu and Facebook presence - and the reality was so much better! It's a white-tablecloth booths setup with dark woods and stone interior that still feels casual because of the familial banter and friendliness of the staff -- so you wouldn't feel underdressed, but still felt like you were out for a treat. I cannot say enough good things about the owner and the staff. He was out working hard in the dining room, greeting everyone and generally offering the Southern hospitality that we sorely miss from back home. The kitchen staff looked incredibly professional, as did the bar and table staff - those bartenders definitely known what they are doing, even if the cocktail menu isn't quite as trendy as downtown. But where they really shine are the steak and American dishes. My husband got the most perfectly executed ribeye we've had in years. They managed to sear it beautifully, rendering the fat and keeping it extra rare inside, a feat of skill. The asparagus and potatoes were incredible. You could tell the steak theme throughout their menu -- the prime rib bits were soo tender and the sauce was delicious, as was the puff pastry. I also just love French Onion soup - it was cold outside and it was clearly from scratch and perfect. Decided to give this place a try because we didn't want to drive to my favorite steakhouses: Alexander's, Sundance, and Fleming's (providing names just as point of references in case you visit those steakhouses before) 5 stars for service and 3 star for the foods. The place is nice and well kept. I notice that there is a dedicated person who clean the tables as soon as the guests leave. Hosts and servers are nice and attentive. We never had to ask for water refills which was a huge plus because many places missed that small attention to details. I wish I can say I love this place and will be a regular, but the foods miss the marks for me. The only item I like is the prime rib bites (appetizer). The potatoes shaved chips were too salty, and the sauce make the crisps become soggy fairly quickly (got the item for free from check-in, so at least we didn't pay for it) Plus point for free salads because I ended up getting full from them (my partner didn't eat his). I would have left hungry without the salads. Main entrees: - Rib Eye (medium RARE) with added grilled prawns. My steak was over cooked. The first 3 slices were ok, but the more I cut into the rest of it, it was more like medium WELL. I had a tiny taste of the smashed potatoes despite the fact that it looked dry and hard, and it was also the last bite. I basically left the smashed potatoes untouched. The steak was not juicy. It was on the drier side as well. There was also no butter on top or some type of sauce like other places. If you want a nice juicy prime rib or saucy and buttery steak, this isn't it. - Chicken Fettuccine: my fiancé isn't a picky eater, and he is a lot more easy-going than I am. He did not like it. He said it was also not saucy nor flavorful. He ended up helping me finish my steak. Again, wish I can say I will return often, the foods aren't good enough for me to do so. Came in with high expectations. Had some McGrail cab that I am familiar with but tasted off. The second glass tasted good (new bottle?). The mixed salad that again tasted off (a bit like Vietnamese bitter melon). Sent back for Ceasar salad that was fine. Got the sea bass that was very moist even though it was one of the thinnest sea bass I've ever had. A bit over seasoned though. The greens that came with it also had the bitter melon taste which I found to be the black olives that they used in that and the salad. The server could be more attentive also but might just be green. Not sure if I would try here again read more

I was so excited to try this place out last month with my fiancé cause it was recommended by a friend a while back. Unfortunately, we wasn't impressed at all. First off, we got sat down and we didn't even realize our server was even our server because she didn't introduce herself or recommend any item. It wasn't until I asked if she was our server and that is when I found out her name was Dominique(I had to ask her name too). These are the first steps of service that all servers should be doing and especially in an establishment that is representing themselves to a higher standard. I informed her it was our first time and asked did she have any recommendations for us. Me asking her these questions was basically me forcing her to do some of her steps of service(I am one of the shift leads at the restaurant I work for). We started off with the clam chowder which was lukewarm and nothing to brag about. Our entrees were teriyaki steak and Chicken piccata and both of those were very mediocre. We decided not to get dessert. While we were eating we could hear and see our server and the cooks talking about other customers. This is so unprofessional! And the place wasn't too busy so it was even easier to hear them. The only reason I gave this place two stars is because the guy (Brian I believe was his name) sat us down and also helped us with majority of our refills and etc( our server was too busy talking crap about customers with the cook). Brian was life and full of energy that radiated throughout the restaurant. We really wished he was our main server because as server you set the tone and vibe for your table and he was a vibe all on his own. My brother had his retirement party here. This place is a hidden gem!!! Great food perfect affordable price--it appears to be a local exquisite off the beaten path restaurant. The food was delicious! The drinks were fabulously strong. My brothers come here often (since they're local to Tracy); I on the other hand am a visitor from Sacramento...I love the local small mom n pop businesses way better than the typical large food chains. The highlight for me was their savory crepe, crab, and shrimp; they stuffed that crepe with so much crab! I'm still dreaming about it. My friend had the steak bites on a puff pastry. She said it was just as good. Her main course was just okay, shrimp fettuccine. She appreciated the big shrimp pieces, but they definitely needed more sauce. The service was excellent. The wait staff was very attentive and helpful. They were always willing to answer our questions and ensure we had everything we needed. The atmosphere was perfect for a special occasion. Who knew Tracy had a hidden gem and a taste of SF, indeed! The restaurant is between a Chinese restaurant and a rent-a-center, so it could easily be missed if you need to become more familiar with the place. In my experience, there is not many options to choose from in Tracy. So when it was time to decide where I should go with my family I thought I was choosing from one mediocre restaurant to another. To my surprise M&J Bistro proved me wrong. I was pleasantly surprised with everything. For the table we ordered the bone marrow, I don't typically order this but I was outnumbered. It was delicious, the slightly toasted baguette with the fatty, beefy deliciousness of the marrow became addicting. I had a fried chicken sandwich and although it may have been a pretty basic sandwich it certainly hit the spot. We had errands to do in Tracy and wanted to eat at a non-chain, local restaurant. We found M & J Bistro on Yelp and immediately chose that for our lunch. First off, we loved the whole concept of the restaurant - A Taste of San Francisco, where dishes are grouped into San Francisco famous spots based on their reputation - The Wharf for seafood, North Shore for Italian and so on. Very clever and inviting. For an appetizer, I had the tempura green beans with a perfect buffalo sauce that had the right hint of heat. I love tempura green beans and wish more restaurants offered this tasty appetizer. My wife had the Prime Rib Bites, perfectly seasoned with a fluffy puff pastry. My wife has allergies and our server, Brian, was very patient and diligent in double-checking the various options for possible allergy issues. He offered true 5 star service - extremely friendly and helpful. The subtitle of the bistro emphasizes crepes so I went with the lobster stuffed crepe - now substituted with shrimp and crab in a lovely béchamel sauce. It was huge and very tasty - crepe perfectly prepared and seafood inside was seasoned nicely. My side salad was greens topped with roasted piquillo peppers. Maybe I'm late to the game but I've never had this combo before but it will be a go to for making my next salad at home! My wife's burger and fries were just okay, but everything else was so fantastic, it was a small speed bump in a delightful meal. Apparently, the bistro recently did an interior refresh with a new bar. While the restaurant is in a strip mall, the minute you walk in, you feel transported to a fantastic bistro that could very well be located in San Francisco. read more

We had a party of 7, and were only able to get in because there was a cancellation The restaurant was clean and had a great ambiance. The service was wonderful! The cocktails, wine, and food were AMAZING!, The M&J Ribeye, Mary's rack of Lamb, and the Lobster, Ravioli, and shrimp were the dishes we all ordered. Driving through town we noticed this place had good reviews so we decided to stop. They have a decent menu with some yummy sounding options. We ordered the ribeye and chicken picatta. Me and my fiancé normal share meals, we'll eat 1/2 then switch so that we can try multiple things, and we enjoy similar foods, so it normally works out. Initially the food all looked good, but when we dug into the steak it was the toughest, driest meat ever. My fiancé had already eaten his half, i couldn't even eat mine. When I brought it to the waitress's attention, they said well you asked for it well done, that's kind of just how well done is cooked. Untrue. I've had better steak at Applebees. The waiter offered us dessert to replace it, since 1/2 of it was gone, we politely declined. Then we get our bill and realized they still charged us the full $42 for the driest ribeye we'd ever had. Honestly, incredibly inconsiderate customer service. We didn't expect them to fully take it off, but some sort of discount for the horrible meal would have been nice. Meh: clam chowder (bland, mildly acidic and sour after taste), garlic mashed potatoes (bland, extremely light on the "truffle" part of truffle mash) Don't order: "old fashion"- its not an old fashion. Muddled citrus with sugar cube with bitterness from orange peel leaves a spoiled orange taste in your mouth. I called to make a reservation on a Friday night to arrive within the hour. We were seated immediately at the time of our reservation. The staff was friendly. They were pretty busy and only few people working so it was a little slow but they continued to check on us. I ordered the Portabella Mushroom Pasta and added chicken. I really enjoyed the dish, it has a ton of mushrooms and the addition of chicken was perfect for me. Only thing I wish was that the asparagus wasn't chopped so small, was hard to eat. I would have rather had them cut in quarters or halves on top. They were smaller than an inch, so just not easy to eat with a fork and long noodles. Another suggestion would be to have bread served with the dishes, a slice or roll, something; with butter or vinegar and oil. For dessert we had the Neapolitan Crepe which was really good. I liked the fresh strawberries and bananas and ice cream, all a good combo. Overall had a good experience. We came from Manteca searching for Italian food because there's none in our area. Came here on a quiet date and it was lovely. The Chile shrimp and ceaser salad was a good combo and they really need to make it an entree. It was the highlight of my meal, along with all the beers. For my main dish, I had Salmon and it was a bit dry so I was disappointed because it looks so good. The ambiance is great for business dinners or older couples. The price is reasonable as well. Customer service was excellent! Our waiter Brian was a pleasure and made the experience an enjoyable one! Came for dinner and brought our favorite bottle of wine only to find out they don't allow any outside drinks. Surprising since other restaurants are happy to accommodate. Luckily they had one that came close to the one we brought. Servers were friendly but unfortunately service was very slow that night. We waited an hour maybe more to get our food. Not sure why because I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo with chicken which seems easy enough. Unfortunately the dish was pretty disappointing. The pasta looked homemade but was undercooked. It had barely any chicken in it which was sliced very thin that it was overcooked & dry. Overall the dish was bland & lacked flavor. I also thought it was pricey considering the small portion size.
