What went well? Not much. So disappointing. We've been before but won't be back. Tables, chairs, linens are nice. While looking over the menu, several staff members talking and picking at the food, eating in the kitchen as they cook. Eating in food preparation areas is against the law. Their fingers have now been in their mouths, back to the food being prepared for customers. We ordered Rib Eye Steaks. Sure didn't look, feel or taste like Rib Eye - dry, overdone, not marbled, no bone. Not sure what cut it was. Food arrived cold. Must have been plated as salad was served and sat there until we were done with salads. Room temperature cooled mashed potatoes and vegetable. If you want bread and butter, they charge for that. Service okay, several times interrupted our conversations to provide a service like pouring water. Crepes not to my liking. Ice cream was good. So disappointing. Went here a couple of weeks ago for a date night. After being seated we quickly were bothered by a loud speaking waiter (maybe the manager even) who was talking with another table nearby. Not only was he loud but he made a crude joke about eating something spicy and how he regrets it later when it comes out the other side. This humor normally would not bother me at a less classy restaurant but when you charge around $50 a plate... I expect better. The cocktails we ordered both did not taste very good. Felt very watered down and just lacked good flavor balance. We both ordered filet mignon and asked for medium rare. One came out medium well and one came out well done. It was a good cut of meat, but quality was ruined by overcooking. Not sure how you charge $50 for a steak meal and cannot get the cook right. Nobody ever asked "how is everything" which is probably for the best since I was not impressed and would have made this known. That said, they may have had a chance to fix things had they at least asked. Save your money, buy a good cut of meat and cook it at home. Even if you are not a great chef it will be on par or better than what we were served. Disappointed by constant mediocre service and quality at sit-down restaurants in Tracy. Great, great place. Absolutely love the food. M & J Bistro is one of the *very* few places that has real, chef-prepared food... as opposed to frozen Sisco Foods TV-type food that's thrown into the microwave or steamer. We had a great dining experience at M & J bistro. Found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to pop in for a late dinner. The location was initially concerning due to being in a strip mall. The interior is nice as well as the ambiance. Service was good from host to wait staff. Wine & drink menu was great with a few of my personal favorites. Tried the fried chicken sandwich (one with a side of fries and one with a side Caesar salad), crispy potato appetizer, Puff pastry beef appetizer, a dirty martini (they make there own blue cheese that's stuffed into the olive) the Brass Monkey drink. Drinks were good, strong enough. The fried chicken sandwich presentation reminded me of the old school Burger King chicken sandwich (the long one). The flavor however was far better. The chicken is a very thin strip (looks like a breast that was beat with a meat tenderizer). I'd prefer more juicy chicken in my sandwich. The fries were good, hot. The Caesar salad was a no go the dressing tasted like a mix of Italian and Caesar dressing (gross). The crispy potato appetizer is basically fresh fried chips with some sauce (pretty good). The puff pasty with beef (includes four pieces) was like warm when it arrived at our table and we didn't even finish it. The music and the drinks were good. 1st time here and our experience was inconsistent. Food, cocktails and ambiance - 4. Service - 2. Beverages - Martini was excellent, the 50/50 was real good albeit sweet, cab from WA was good and Mexican coffee was delish. Food was quite good. The tempura green beans were excellent; clam chowder was different with cayenne/tobasco - good flavor but too many spuds. My wife's filet was tasty/tender, asparagus perfect, mashed spuds a bit lumpy for her preference, but the red wine sautéed mushrooms were not good (sweet almost teriyaki-like). My rack of lamb was cooked perfect and nicely seasoned and asparagus were top notch but I didn't expect them to come out in a cast iron 2/3 full of the basque beans. The beans were good but I'd prefer them on side as I couldn't get a "clean" bite of lamb or veg. Our salads (included) were a little flat and the black olives too prevalent. The crepes were fantastic in the dessert sampler though the cheesecake was lackluster. Service - man at host station took our name and seemed befuddled looking at his seating chart; commenting to himself "don't know why they were put here". We ordered cocktails from a different gal that came by our table and then the guy came back to take or drink order, we informed him another gal took our drink order, he replied, I hope she gets it right, This didn't give us confidence in staff. We ordered our food and when my wife asked for no salt on filet, he said ok and that he'd put the sauce on the side too. My wife requested steak be cooked "rare plus" which is an obvious meaning at steak houses - between Rare and Medium Rare. He said he'd never heard of that and would just tell them Med Rare. When she asked for bleu cheese dressing on her salad, he said - shaking his head - "no salt on steak but you picked the saltiest dressing". We did not know what to say as this was a first getting admonished for food choice. After quite a wait for the beans to arrive, within minutes, our soup/salad and entrees all arrived. He came by to check and I commented that it looked good but we didn't expect it all at once. He said that it was going to be a real busy night so the cooks were trying to get ahead. We thought, we don't care how busy it would be later..., just bring out our food so we can eat when hot. At end, I put card out to pay and he said he'd bring bill over for me to inspect as he wanted me to review the bill. As an experienced diner, this made me wonder how often patrons are accusing server of overchargin.... He totally disappeared for 5 minutes so we walked up to host station to expedite paying our bill (and freeing up our table for waiting guests). He came up and brought the bill and asked me to look at. I told him I trusted him and he said he'd look at it for me. Finally bill was paid. Turns out that our server is the chef and managing owner. We're not fans of owner belittling their staff; making excuses for mistakes (vs simply apologizing); making fun of diner preferences; and or implying I'd dispute the bill. I was very curious about this location. I recently moved into the area, and was missing some food in the Bay Area. I worked in San Francisco for about a decade, so I'm pretty well versed in their eateries. At the end of the day, the food was only so-so. However, I would come back again, just because the experience itself was very pleasant. The decor of the place is pretty inviting. It's in a rather unspectacular location, but they really modeled the inside to be of a better class. All the servers and cooks are particularly well dressed, so you feel like you're dining in a better environment. Their menu discourages the use of cell phones (which of course many people use anyway, hence the check-ins and yelp photos), and I find it pretty easy to carry a conversation with your party here. We were able to attend to our toddler, who came with us, very easily. And extra points for the friendly server who made friends with our kid. The food itself wasn't bad, but it wasn't remarkable. There's a lot of heavy use of cream and cheeses to mask the quality of some of their items. But the friendly atmosphere, and the creativity they try to put into some of their dishes make for a more unique experience than you can get at many other locations in the area. If this restaurant was located in San Francisco, I don't believe it would survive for long. However, out here, it has just enough unique qualities to stand out as a worthwhile experience every now and again. 2.5 stars for the food + 1.5 for the service/atmosphere. read more
