Hidden Gem Alert: Sonny's in Hartsville Will Make You Rethink Every Travel Decision…read more The Setup: Picture this - we're fleeing Charlotte airport toward Myrtle Beach, stomachs growling, playing restaurant roulette on our phones. Every exit offered the same depressing parade of 3.3-star sadness. Just when we'd resigned ourselves to gas station jerky, there it was: Sonny's Restaurant in Hartsville, gleaming like a mirage with its 4.9 rating (okay, only five reviews, but STILL). The menu screamed "drive past me!" - hot dogs, burgers, and enough fried food to make your cardiologist weep. But that rating! We took the leap. The Vibe: Walking into Sonny's feels like your cool aunts invited you to his hunting lodge/tractor museum/time capsule. High ceilings, a delightfully chaotic mix of chairs that would make an interior designer's eye twitch, stuffed pheasant keeping watch over your meal, and - my favorite touch - a majestic display of tractors. Oh, and bottled sodas with an ominous "DO NOT OPEN - EMPLOYEES ONLY" sign. (I'm still wondering what happens if you do. Instant ejection? A stern talking-to? The mystery lives rent-free in my head.) The Welcome: The greeting hit different - warm, genuine, like visiting relatives who are actually happy to see you. We rolled in late, right as they'd shut down one of the burners, but there wasn't a hint of "ugh, late customers" energy. The Food: Started with onion strings (because of course), then asked for their recommendations. My wife went French dip route; I chose the burger steak - loaded with onions, peppers, mushrooms, and gravy (I had them hold the gravy and pile everything else on top because I'm a maverick like that). Here's where it gets good: This came with a baked potato AND salad for a price so low I actually checked the bill twice. My wife's sweet potato fries? Chef's kiss. Her side salad? Crisp, cold, perfect. My salad? Same. Everything hit exactly right. The One Speed Bump: The baked potato arrived with vegetable oil spread instead of real butter. In a place this authentic, margarine feels like a betrayal. Guys, spring for the real stuff - you're so close to perfection! The Verdict: Sonny's is exactly the kind of place you discover by accident and then bore everyone about for the next year. Rural setting, genuine hospitality, solid comfort food at prices that feel like a glitch in the matrix. If you're passing through Hatsville on the Charlotte-to-Myrtle run, do yourself a favor: Stop driving. Eat here. Tell them the couple not from there and who arrived late sent you. Five stars. Would accidentally discover again.

There is plenty of space and tables for dining.I ordered the burger and fries. The burger came with onions, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, and banana peppers with your choice of cheddar or provolone cheese. As you can see, I chose cheddar, and I added bacon. The burger had one small strip of bacon, about two small pieces of banana pepper, and about two small round pickles; it was a bit disappointing because they skimped on those toppings for the size of the burger. Overall, the burger was okay. The fries were like crispy fries. I did like that they were hot. I noticed something was on the plate near the fries, so I didn't eat many after that. I honestly was starving, so I was grateful for the little bit I did eat, but yeah, it was not as pleasing as I would have hoped for in a meal here.

Gabe was clearly busy on a Saturday night but still stayed attentive to our table of six. He walked us through the specials with great detail, offered thoughtful recommendations, and clearly knew the menu inside and out. Food - The reason we came, and it did not disappoint. Our table enjoyed shrimp cocktail, duck spring rolls, rack of lamb, and the King Tut special--every dish was a hit. The large sides were truly shareable for all six of us. The scalloped potatoes, in particular, were incredibly cheesy and scrumptious. Overall - It was our first visit, and we will definitely be back. The only downside was that the hostess seemed visibly overwhelmed by the Saturday night rush, which made the check‑in experience a bit stressful to watch. It might help to give her additional support during peak hours so the front‑of‑house experience matches the excellence of the food and service.

The place has an interesting history, it was an old mill. I walked around before going inside to take some pics. Once we walked in, the red carpet was rolled out (the best customer service).  This was definitely one the best meals that I have ever had in my lifetime. The team was professional, friendly, courteous and helpful. The food was excellent, everything tasted freshly made with love. The next day I had No stomach pain at all, which is very rare these days when I eat at a restaurant. The lamb chops and ribeye aged steak was absolutely amazing, every bite melted in our mouths, the different flavors hit all thru our palates. The only tip I wanna make sure patrons understand. Yes it's a pricey evening out, and the sides are not included. We felt that at least one side should be included with the main dish. My 4 lamb chops cost $61 which was quite a bit. Most high end restaurants will at least include one side. Don't let this take away from your experience, just go and enjoy. It's a once a year kinda meal for us. We didn't try desert, but heard it was also amazing. It was our 32nd anniversary, and the waitress wished us many more, we didn't expect anything else. The thought was very much appreciated. I will be returning again in the near future for a special occasion.

But, I can tell you all about the service and encourage you to make good choices in how you decide to have epicurean adventures that also support your local economy. My dining companion & I walked into an uncrowded restaurant with many unclean dining tables. We were then greeted by a hostess coughing into her hand while encouraging us to choose where we wanted to sit. We opted for the bar, in hopes of not experiencing anything touched by the coughing hostess. However, when I politely asked the bartender if she minded wiping our area down...due to the large crumbs sitting in front of my dining companion...she not quite as politely informed me that she had "just wiped it down but would do it again." At that point, I knew it was time to go. Anyone who follows me here knows that I am an avid foodie & supporter of small businesses. However, I do not stay where I am not welcomed & will absolutely not set foot back in this establishment again.

We were seated by the hostess to a nice booth and our waiter was quick to take our orders. We ordered the Grilled Salmon ($24) with a side of Risotto. Our friend ordered the Grilled salmon with Risotto and also a Edamame/succotash side. The salmon was done perfectly and the risotto also was very good. My wife ordered a side salad and I ordered a side Caesar salad. The salads were cold, crisp and very good, although my wife's balsamic vinegar dressing caught her by surprised by the acidity of the dressing. Excellent meal. Our other friend ordered the Pork Chop, which was huge and quite thick. It had a maple glaze on it. I had a bite of it and it was very good tasting...not quite as tender as I would've liked, but that's sort of typical of most pork chops. We were too full to try any dessert.
