My Bride and I celebrated our Anniversary at the Mill Pond last night. As always, the service and the food were amazing. If you have not been, make a reservation!

Wonderful restaurant in Rembert SC on the Mill Pond. The steaks and seafood are special. I rank this restaurant in my Top 3 of best steak restaurants in the USA!!!. Once you make it to the location, in the countryside, parking is immediately in front of the business. The servers offer a warm greeting and will cut up if you push them. There are truly no happy hour specials, but there are off the menu chef special most every day. The cost is consistent which top shelf steak houses in Dallas, Chicago, Charlotte or any large metroplex. The 20 oz bone in ribeye topped with fried oysters can't be beat!!! The sides are family style and hearty portions. This restaurant sits on the Mill Pond which does have a local gator population!!!

We were seated by the hostess to a nice booth and our waiter was quick to take our orders. We ordered the Grilled Salmon ($24) with a side of Risotto. Our friend ordered the Grilled salmon with Risotto and also a Edamame/succotash side. The salmon was done perfectly and the risotto also was very good. My wife ordered a side salad and I ordered a side Caesar salad. The salads were cold, crisp and very good, although my wife's balsamic vinegar dressing caught her by surprised by the acidity of the dressing. Excellent meal. Our other friend ordered the Pork Chop, which was huge and quite thick. It had a maple glaze on it. I had a bite of it and it was very good tasting...not quite as tender as I would've liked, but that's sort of typical of most pork chops. We were too full to try any dessert. Great menu, good service. We will go back.

There is plenty of space and tables for dining.I ordered the burger and fries. The burger came with onions, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, and banana peppers with your choice of cheddar or provolone cheese. As you can see, I chose cheddar, and I added bacon. The burger had one small strip of bacon, about two small pieces of banana pepper, and about two small round pickles; it was a bit disappointing because they skimped on those toppings for the size of the burger. Overall, the burger was okay. The fries were like crispy fries. I did like that they were hot. I noticed something was on the plate near the fries, so I didn't eat many after that. I honestly was starving, so I was grateful for the little bit I did eat, but yeah, it was not as pleasing as I would have hoped for in a meal here.

The restaurant location is across from the State House, so I'd anticipate that they get quite a diverse cross section of visitors at the restaurant. I could tell from the moment we arrived that the hostesses were professional and got us to a table that was comfortable and had a view of the dining room. We had originally intended to sit outside where the view is more interesting, but on this day the heat was just too much. Our server, Megan approached quickly and went over a presentation of meat types and preparation styles, and quickly got us some drinks. She was efficient and professional throughout the meal. I had a wonderful fillet with some sauteed spinach, and it was all quite tasty. With a price averaging about $90 per person all in, including soft drinks, tip and tax, it's a higher end restaurant for the area, but certainly a reasonable value overall. For those visiting from out of town as we were, you should definitely take the time to either walk across Gervais Street to visit the State House, or head in the opposite direction along main Street and visit the downtown area. Halls is a wonderful centerpiece and represents Columbia well. At the end of the meal, they asked for my address, at which point I sarcastically said to my wife quote what are they going to do, mail me a thank you card?" Well, they did mail me a thank you card, a very nice touch, and appreciated. A truly first class move.

The problem with the coffee was the cream. It should probably be served around room temperature. Because the creamer was so cold several of our party had to ask for frequent warm-ups. Our server, Kristen, was very personable, pleasant and accommodating. A couple of us ordered Bellini's and mimosas. My Bellini was just OK. My standards are high, since I've had them in Venice, Italy. The Hall's Bellini was not very tasty and on the watery side. My wife tried to order the sweet potato pancakes, but they were out. So she was disappointed, and ended up with the lavender scented brioche French toast. She thought it was OK but was seeking a stronger flavor. I ordered the biscuits and sausage gravy. I don't order this very often, but there was a good portion of sausage and the flavor of the sausage was enjoyable without being too salty. Our daughter ordered crab cake Eggs Benedict which features a creole sauce. She enjoyed it, but the temperature of the dish could have been hotter. Our niece's daughter had the farmers omelette with the apple sage sausage. The apple-sage sausages were excellent (I got to sample one) and a very good deal. The ambience of Halls is always great. The service is usually quite good and the food is usually excellent. This is our second brunch at Halls and I'll have to say that our first brunch experience was a little bit better for the reasons noted above. I still rate it the best brunch in town.

We live in Arizona now, and whenever we are near, we make a point to come back. They open at 6 and close at 9 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They have been in business since the 70's. I believe with the original owners. A lot of the foundational materials are the original. Well maintained though. If you plan on coming early, you need to make reservations. You actually need to have a reservation up until about 2000 if you are bothered by waiting. This is a family owned and operated business. Everyone is friendly and works hard to make sure you have a great experience. They have little turnover in the staff too. I've been seeing the same faces for 20 years. The waitresses are hustling and our drinks never came close to empty. Everything runs so smoothly. It's obvious that the back of the restaurant is working as hard as the front. Janelle was our waitress tonight and she's phenomenal. Here's what makes this place irresistible. Their steaks are marinated and cooked to perfection every time on a sizzling hot plate. They cook it a little less than requested because your steak continues to cook while you eat. I like to cut up my steak and roll it around on the steering plate. But that baked potatoes. This is what I dream about when I'm gone. They have a sour cream and butter mixture that is out of this world. The name, Water We Eatin,' is a clever play on the nearby Wateree River and the age-old question, What Are We Eating? The previous owners recently sold the establishment and I went back for the first time since then this week. The new owners kept most of the staff, the name of the restaurant, the menu and the prices. The prices can't be beat and the staff has always been very friendly. The location is kinda in the middle of nowhere. It appears to be an old gas station that has been repurposed. To me, it screams South Carolina and I like that. I got the rib-eye steak ad baked potato without thinking I also got it the last time I ate here before the ownership change. The difference between the two dining experiences eye opening and I don't mean that in a good way, I am sorry to say. As soon as we began to put butter on our potato, the three of us realized it was not cooked all the way through. My fork would barely make a dent. I was already worried because that should have been the easiest part of the meal to get right and to check before it was brought out. The server was apologetic and said he would have the cook pop three new potatoes in the oven. Which is fine and we appreciated that, but now we had steak on our plate and no potato. So I started in on the steak. Last time the steak was very tender. Not so much this time. It was tough to cut. The seasoning was not as good this time as last. I don't know if the seasoning was different this time or if it was just not seasoned as much, but it was noticeable. The new potato when it came out was cooked fine, but the whole situation left a bad taste in my mouth, to use a bad pun. I liked the tea. Being from the south, I ordered it sweetened and it came just as I prefer, sweet, but not thick and syrupy like some places serve it. I am open to going back and if I do, I will update this review. People are allowed to have bad days. It may be a learning experience for the new owners. I am pulling for them as I prefer locally-owned places with character than cookie cutter national chains where every location looks the same. I hope to try their breakfast for the first time at some point.
