If you're looking for industrial metals M & K Metals is the best local place. They sell big metal in big quantity, bigger than I can use for my projects. so MY favorite part of the biz is the "REM"s section. (REM = Remainders) That's where they sell the left over cut scraps of all kinds of metal. I can usually find something that will work for my current project there. I'm usually looking for angle or square tube. Today I found a piece of flat aluminum - perfect for my project. About 5 pounds. $14 out the door. :-) FYI: REMs sell by the pound, at something like half price versus the full size pieces. When you buy rems, you weight it on the scale by the front door across from the cashiers. I'll upload a photo of their current price sheet for REMs. The REM prices are posted in the REM area, which is straight through the retail store & then turn left. Customers are allowed in the REM area. M&K is also improving the wares in their store. They are selling more helpful pre-built metal parts than they used to. Gate hinges, bolts, nuts, lock boxes for steel screen doors, weld on tabs, casters, tools, drill bits, grinding wheels, gloves, & more. read more

There was a problem with the availability of my quote and Nancy and Ronald were very helpful resolving it by selling a more expensive 3/16 steel angle bar at the sand price as the 1/8 steel I was quoted. And they have tons of welding supplies, I picked up a soap stone steel marker with 3 refills for $5 ! read more

Unfortunately, my opinion of M & K has been revised significantly downward based on recent experiences. I've noted a real change in the helpfulness and attitude of the counter staff in the last year or so. They seem to have grown accustomed to being (probably needlessly) separated from clients by a 4-foot wide physical barrier and their attitude/demeanor makes it clear that they would rather not be bothered at all by in-store customers. But the straw that broke the camel's back for me was my most recent two visits. The item I was looking for, that is normally stocked and readily available for purchase, was not available. But when I asked, I was told it would be available again in a few days. However, when I returned a few days later it was not. The manager gave me a confusing story about why that was, and promised again that it would be available in a few days. OK, fine - not the end of the world. But on that second visit, when I attempted to purchase about $600 worth of material, the counter clerk gave me one price, but then changed the price at the last second after I had already handed over my debit card. I'm sure you can guess is whose favor the price changed. I've previously gotten the feeling that M & K is less than transparent about pricing. Even the products in their retail area usually do not have prices displayed, so buying from M & K requires something of a leap of faith that you are being charged a fair price. But when the prices start jumping around right before your eyes during your transaction, enough is enough. I decided to cancel my purchase and walk out. The $5,000 or so I spend per year on steel is a drop in the bucket for a supplier like M & K, so I have no illusion that they will be devastated by the loss of my business. And I wouldn't even say M & K has lost my business forever. But steel is a commodity product after all, and in a highly populated area like ours, there are many suppliers. So at least for now, other companies will be getting my business. read more

This place rocks. I feel so lucky to have been tipped off about m&k back when they were at their old location and would even go there if they moved 30 miles away. Almost all other metal suppliers will only supply you sheets of metal and maybe cut it down for you with their shear. Here they will do brake metal, plasma cut and even water jet. On top of all that, the price is just about as low as I have seen anywhere. This may seem petty, but even the prices of their sodas in their machine are cheap. Worst customer service ive ever encountered. The two girls they have working in the front must really hate their job to treat someone the way i was treated. As soon as a came in the doors i got a bad look. I had to approach them to ask some questions on metal. Girl in braids really needs to just stay home if she dont want to deal with customers. Has from a wide branch of selections Of materials such as: Aluminum, Brass, cold roll steel, copper, hot roll steel, stainless steel and that's only naming what they have vaguely. But they have a variety of sub categories as well, different kinds of aluminum, mild steel, and stainless too. That's not even half of what they have. My project is a steel under-counter handicap countertop support. I'm not a metals guy, so needed lots of information before I could choose the steel that would work for my project. Cold roll, hot roll, tube and BAR (?). I found M&K Metal online, but when checking them on yelp, I wasn't expecting much. They are open on Saturday, a big plus. The counter staff were very patient and helpful. The warehouse staff were very helpful as well. They escorted me around the warehouse to look at the various sizes and types that I now know more about. The warehouse staff recommended a less expensive option, which was welcome and refreshing. I made my purchase and they cut the material as needed. A great selection, helpful and friendly staff earns a five star review from me. read more

I teach Welding/Metal Sculpture at Otis College. this is the place I send all my students and where I buy all my stuff. 1) it is on average around 25% less than IMS (I have collected data from the 10 years I have been teaching) - it amazes me that so many people belive that M&K is expensive. I urge you to actually call around - I generally pick my top 10 most used materials and price them at a per piece price. M&K is always cheapest. 2) I tell my students to let the counter personnel know they are students and may not know all the accurate ways to order/names etc - Anyone in this industry knows... metal store / welding supply folks can be amazingly rude... NOT THE CASE at M&K. 3) I have shopped around. and while others stores may occasionally offer a slightly lower price on a few items, more often than not, their inventory systems don't let you know when an item is sold out. so... you phone ahead, get a prices, drive there, buy something, head out to the warehouse, wait in line, wait for the guy to go get what you need, then... he comes back and tells you they don't have it. This place is simply fantastic have a great selection of all sorts of metal. I usually deal with Ron who is always friendly and knowledgeable. Some people are quick to drop off the places might be higher but it's actually false. If you stop around their prices are highly competitive and usually the differences how thick the metal ass or how long it is. When you're working with building material, its key to remember the importance of having things delivered on time and always getting exactly what you ordered which is 100 percent what you will get from the team at MnK metal. I have placed over 30 orders with them and they've all been precise on time and exactly as promised. The new location has an even better lay up in before haven't even greater selection. Whoever owns this business and spent thousands of dollars in marketing to get people to come in the door is throwing away a lot of money with their rotten customer service. I came in with a simple plywood template that I needed in 5/8 steel and some question about a 31ft beam needed for a project, the usual metal supplier did not have in stock. The lady behind the counter looked at me and said "FILE" and I was totally confused. She rolled her eyes and told me to get out of line, another man came up to me and said "where is your file?" then he explained that I needed to hire an architect to put this template into CAD and email it to them, and he could not help me with the structural steel, they dont do welding, etc. I was pretty stunned. The irony is they have these signs posted everywhere about how they "refuse to serve rude people" The only person in the building who is helpful is the security guard posted at the entrance. Put him in charge! I was engaged by two steel contractors in the parking lot who noticed I was upset. I gave my template to one of them and it is being made as we speak. He is coming to the jobsite to assess the other structural steel needs. read more

These guys are great. I've used them a couple of times for very limited DIY stuff so I can't speak to their commercial capacity, but as a home-owner who needs the occasional 12' square tubing beam, they're nothing but very friendly and have the items you're looking for in stock. read more

Pretty awesome place. I had a little project I was working on and needed stainless steel wrapping for a counter top I built. I called around and most places would only do it for contractors and the places willing to do it would charge a lot. M&K was the cheapest and fastest turnaround time I found. I buy very small amounts of metal from M & K less than $75, when I buy more than $75 I go to they're competition on alameda BL, And now there moving closer to there competition on alameda BL, And now I will have to drive that much further, I will go to the competition for all my purchases, ill save at least 25%. Yes this is a convenient location but their prices are extremely high and their metal sometimes comes out bent yeah I know metal come spend sometimes but every single time it seems like I get at least one piece of metal that is messed up. Some people are friendly here but for the majority they all seemed a little uptight or use multiple Metal distributors and these guys are probably the most rude and have the highest price but they do have a good selection maybe that's why they are so rude. This is the best stocked and most enlightened metal source and fabricator in town. I am a small business but they treat me like a high roller. Once when I needed just one part cut and fabricated one of the bosses did it for me at lunch time. I was shocked! Been a customer for years and I refer everybody. This place was the best price I found for what I needed (only called 2 other supply shops though). It was just for 1 pc. of steel flat bar and was pretty straight forward. You walk in through the sliding doors on the right and place your order on the counter. Then go back out and wait for someone to pick your order. I also had my piece cut and did not take too long. I was in and out in about 15 mins. If you are getting metal cut, make sure you bring something to cover your car seats/trunk because it will be dripping with oil. read more

Maybe if you need to by 6000 lbs of something, this is a good place. But I went in looking for a very small piece aluminum channel to help out a student I'm mentoring on his robotics project for a high school intro to technology class he's in. I found a piece that was close to what we need and took it to the counter. After standing there for 3 or 4 minutes being ignored I finally just said "excuse me" really loudly and someone finally came over to me. It was half a pound of aluminum so probably a $1.50 remnant, but I was told they have a $5 minimum. As I tried to explain it was for a student, I was told "you'll need to buy something else." Fortunately for me, another customer overheard what was going on and gave me the name of two other places I should check with. Not a single word from the lady behind the counter, she just went back to her desk. read more

Used to go to their old place on Western and Rosecrans,the new place is huge and well organised but oh the prices!
