A family member from out of town who only eats halal was craving Mexican food. So I told her about this place since I've heard great things things about it. I was so embarrassed as she did not like it, neither did her friend, and neither did I. I was shocked because it looks appetizing, but the steak was so burnt it was gross. The lady cooking the food looked like she didn't know what she was doing. We were the only ones in the restaurant yet waited forever for our food. M Cantina has a "normal" front door and a funky/ cool alleyway back entrance which we used. I came into M cantina yesterday and wanted to re-attempt it again since my last experience was not that great. If I could give them less than one star I would. First off, I came with a friend that has never been there before and when she would ask a question about something on the menu the waitress kept making cocky comments and had an attitude. My friend that was allergic to tomatoes asked if in the guacamole we cannot have tomatoes she instantly said "no we don't do that here no no sorry" so they are not accommodating to people whatsoever. This place has terrible customer service. After all that happened I got up and left because they did not deserve my service!! I have been here before to dine. My husband loves the duck carnitas tacos. And we both love the corn. It has this great roasted flavor that blends well with the cheese and spices. With COVID-19 limiting our options to carryout, I was a little concerned about how they would taste after the half-hour drive back home. I should not have been concerned. I got a tip from a friend of a friend about M Cantina and went to the restaurant today and was very warmly greeted by the staff. However, things went down from there. The barman offered me a "fruit sangria" and apologized for no booze (I didn't care since I was on lunch from work). It was refreshing and ok...I was looking at the menu which I quickly realized was not really Mexican but what I refer to as "caucasian Mexican"...fru-fru and complicated versions of Mexican dishes, dressed up to be more expensive). The helpful barman returned and steered me toward the "special brisket tacos" and I went ahead and ordered them even though they were not listed on the menu. Someone helpfully explained the absurd tray of 15 salsas to me which was helpful. The tacos were overly sweet, brisket totally unremarkable, the carmelized onions just made it even more cloying. I decided it would be unlikely I would return in the future, and politely be on my way...but then I got the bill which was STUNNING in its overpriced audacity...$18 for 3 tacos and $8 for the non-alcohol drink? Are you KIDDING ME? Not only will I NEVER come to this place again, I will actively discourage anyone from being so dumb as to wander into this place and be presented with unpriced "suggestions" then hit with a ridiculous bill. I don't even know how these folks can live with themselves when there are SO many great options of not only authentic Mexican, but wonderful Middle eastern cuisine in the area. This is a unique 'Mexican' restaurant. Fresh food, authentic and flavorful. The owner and staff are very friendly. No beer or wine is a problem but the food is amazingly delicious. I did not love my experience here. We met friends and had a reservation, but they crammed us in this area where the passing servers must have kicked my chair thirty times. There is no place to put coats, and the chairs have no backs, so you end up eating messy food with your coat in your lap. The server got better, but initially she seemed really bossy and defensive, opening her welcome with a speech about how they don't do any substitutions. This place is just ok. We will not be coming back. If you don't have a reservation you sit either at the bar area or the tables next to the bar area. Tables are super small, no room to move or really enjoy eating your food. If you move to far to the left right or behind you you will probably hit the person next to you. The whole place feels cramped. No alcohol is served here which is weird because this is a Mexican restaurant with the word cantina in it. Another place yelp gave me false hope. Went here with my sister got the braised short rib tacos, carne asada taco, elote and churros. Really thought this place was going to be a win but definitely not the case.The restaurant is super cute but it was freezing and our table was so wobbly. Its 2018 way to play into stereotypes. At this point when someone addresses you in that manner the food cant make up for terrible service. Portions are very small and on the pricey side. My sisters carne asada taco was basically all lettuce with tiny sprinkling of cold steak. These are not authentic tacos with onion/cilantro/lime. If your looking for simple/flavorful tacos skip this place and go to Joses in Detroit. I did enjoy my tacos more than my sister they were filling but the mole sauce was on the sweet side and I wasn't super crazy about it. The elote was on point and flavorful. Churros were average the cinnamon sugar wasn't adhering to them well. So if you want over priced tacos with a side of attitude this is your place. read more
