We were super excited to try this place out, I had even come from out of town to go out on State Street. Once we arrived inside and were trying to order a drink the female bartender was extremely rude. I've never had such a rude experience while out in Santa Barbara. She brushes her rude behavior off as a "joke" but in reality you are making customers feel uncomfortable and disrespected. I am a manager in a restaurant and never in my life would I speak to a customer that way. We left the bar because of her attitude completely. We dropped by M. Special Brewing Company one Sunday afternoon in March. It was more of an outing than we'd been used to with a baby and a toddler, and it ended up being a nice bright spot in our day. M. Special is on the part of State Street that's closed off to car traffic, making it a great place for pedestrians and people killing time with small children. The brewery has a huge interior as well as a spacious front patio, and when we went, around 2:30 in the afternoon, it was really laid back and quiet. In fact, the only other customers I remember seeing were another couple with a kid in a stroller. Service was fast and friendly, and we parked ourselves on one of the high tables on the patio. Between the foot traffic and the Slurpee I bought him at 7-Eleven, our toddler was content to stay put and let us drink for almost an hour. We got the All Time Special and the Greatland Special, the brewery's core saison and IPA. Both were satisfying--tasty, refreshing beers on a warm March afternoon. We had a lovely time at M. Special and hope to come back soon, with or without the children. read more

Great brewery place. Incredible HH from 3-6pm weekdays but they even have all day HH Monday's and during the football season additional HH. Great staff. Food is available and I've heard good. Fast casual food kitchen, order and get a number. Lots of tasty snacks including wings, fries, jalapeno poppers, etc. Can get crowded on weekends, but overall this is a great spot to hang for a few hours due to the venue size, indoor/outdoor options, and lots of beer and food to choose from. My wife and I were on a Saturday trip to Santa Barbara and we decided on a perfect day to try one of the breweries on State Street. The bartender was super nice and gave us a couple of stickers and I ordered their flagship IPA. We brought it out onto the back patio, since it was so nice outside. The IPA was flavorful and refreshing and we had to catch a bus back to Carpinteria, but we really enjoyed this place and they had a grill for some tasty treats if you are hungry. Chill spot on state street. I've had M. Special out in Goleta but it's nice to see more breweries on state st if you're looking to do a crawl. No frills and each time I've visited, samples are allowed. I typically enjoy their Sabado Tarde and G-Town either draft or in a can. They do serve food here in a separate kitchen window - but I strictly go for their fries with a $1 upgrade to to truffle Parmesan. That said; do order all your sauces all together. I had a recent instance where I simply couldn't get spicy Mayo or garlic aioli because I didn't request it in my order before paying. Kind of lame if it's just them squeezing it in a 2 oz cup. I'd recommend they just have bottles or pumps for the employees to sauce it up for us if I've already ordered. There's also a beer garden in the back on top of outdoor state street seating read more

On my last visit I noticed i had been charged more than usual for my go to beer which they later explained was a price increase due to this weekends fiesta... sounds like price discrimination so that why i took off one star. On bright side seemed like the cups they used are definitely 16 ounces or larger ans the double ipa i get is usally 12 ounces. Some other venues down the street use 14 ounce cups and charge similar prices, so for an extra 4-6 ounces at the same price as the other guys, come here! read more

I am a big fan of the beers and I also respect the fact that they don't use or rely on Santa Barbara in their marketing. They are proud to be Goletans!! Don't get me wrong, I think we all love Santa Barbara but I grew up in Lompoc and I'm proud of Lompoc that's my home. I think people in Goleta can sympathize with me in this regard!! So in I walked and I think the set up and layout of M Special is awesome! This place was good. We had beer and burritos and they were playing the Umich/USC game which I had completely forgotten was happening that day (Go Blue). Burritos were kinda small and dry, but we asked for salsa and that helped. Service was fine but we didn't interact with staff enough to make any hefty comments. Vibe was good, but I like the Goleta location better. Seems like they get rowdy at night with live music though! So maybe I'll check out their night scene sometime. read more

Awesome spot if you're just going to grab some beers and hang out. Huge location, great outdoor patio, good service! Tuesday is Bingo and Wednesday is Trivia Night. If I was only here for the beer - absolute five stars and I'm not even a huge beer drinker. Unfortunately the food was extremely disappointing. The "House Pretzel" and onion rings were definitely the cheapest frozen items from Costco. Disneyland does better with pretzels. I had half a bite of an onion ring and didn't need to waste my time. The tacos are a variety of three - the two meat ones lacked flavor and were a huge let down for "slow cooked carnitas" and shredded chicken (it was a huge chunk of meat). The pasilla chili, onion and mushroom taco was delicious and full of flavor. I would have preferred three of these. The crispy chicken sandwich was tasty but the bun wasn't toasted and the way it was built made it soggy and fall apart half way through eating it. Grab food at one of the many places before and then go here for good vibes and refreshing beer. read more

I really love that M Special opened a downtown location! I love the one in Goleta so I already appreciate the beers. Today I am enjoying an Abbyfication who's is a 9% Belgium Strong. Seems to pair very well with my pretzel which comes with queso and mustard. People seem to knock them down for food and service. I've only ordered the pretzel which I enjoy very much so I don't have anything else to say about the food. But I have been very impressed by the great service. Hostess made sure I had a great table, the servers I have had have been so nice and very very quick. It is a great space with a great patio, once Covid is behind us I know it will be a very popular spot. read more

I have been a frequent customer of M.Special, but after last night I never want to go there again. The manager, Tori, confiscated my REAL ID and refused to give it back. Apparently the staff was having a competition to see who could collect the most fakes - you'd think this would require staff to first know the difference between a fake vs real id?? She had a truly nasty attitude about it all. I couldn't believe how disrespectful and degrading she was to me. I ended up having to call the cops in order to get my id back. My friend was visiting from out of town and this was our only opportunity to enjoy a night out. It was a huge bummer to have to deal with such a time consuming and stressful inconvenience. I've never left a negative review before, but this girl is an embarrassment to M.Special and needs to be fired. BTW- If this ever happens to you, you can also file a complaint with the state's liquor commission which will go on their record permanently unless you choose to withdraw it. My boyfriend and I checked this spot out when we were visiting Santa Barbara. We got to meet the owner who was awesome! All of the service staff was extremely friendly and kind. We tried their Pog seltzer and was pleasantly surprised. We actually ended up going back the following day for more!! I love that you can order food separately from the bar so there's no large line at either station at least when we went.... I'm sure it gets extra busy on weekends ;) ! Kudos to this brewery for opening in the midst of Covid! I don't believe I've ever seen this location as anything other than a nightclub in the past 20 years. It is complete with a large main room with an expansive back patio - but its last tenant vacated some years back. It's nice to see this large spot occupied once again. The inside was closed but I was allowed to walk through it to the back patio for seating. Service was pretty good and their new eatery was adjacent. My beer (Greatland) and sandwich were both exceptional. The place wasn't super busy due to the restrictions, but I could see it being a great spot once they are allowed to operate at full capacity. We tried the specialty limited beers: Pablo Special, Good light easy ale, and the Platonic, a not too hoppy fruit forward IPA. We ride our bikes over on a Thursday evening and it wasn't packed. This place has some really good beer and one of the few places I have found (so far) that have a decent cider on tap.
