The cabinets, which arrive on pallets in flat boxes that you or your cabinet installer assemble (and install) yourself, are very solid and quite nice, with soft-close hinges. They turned our nicer than the cabinets in our own house, so now of course my wife wants to redo our kitchen, too. We are very pleased with the cabinets, and our new tenants love them too. The assembly and installation of the cabinets is pretty tricky, so you'll want someone who is skilled and has done it before. Installing kitchen cabinets is not really for the average do-it-yourselfer, as experienced cabinet installers have several tricks to make everything fit and line up perfectly, including liberal use of shims in many locations that are not visible once the cabinets are installed. Before the countertop work began, we needed a plumber and asked JP if he had someone. He sent his plumber. The plumber did not speak English, and while he was there we used Google Translate to bring the issues to his attention directly... but it did not work. Unfortunately, the work was unacceptable. The bathroom sink leaked immediately due to improper connections, the sink was installed crooked, the showerhead rod was damaged during installation, a screw was broken into the wall, the wrong type of sealant was used, and the handlebar popped out with minimal pressure (he used the wrong screws, only screwed in 1 instead of 3 and broke one screw in the tile wall) creating a serious safety concern. My agent and I called JP to address the situation. Before I was even able to explain the issues, he immediately stated the plumber was "not his guy," despite having sent him. The conversation quickly became unprofessional, with him yelling AT US and he ultimately hung up on us.... all his without us even stating what the issue was leading me to believe he already knew HIS GUY screwed up. I had to hire another plumber to correct the mistakes, which cost me twice as much, all after already paying JP for a shitty job. I would be very wary of working with someone who is willing to speak to a paying customer that way before even hearing their concerns. Based on this experience, I will not be moving forward with them for my countertop installation.

The day we had the measure, we talked about our reach-in closet and grommets to run some power cables. The grommets didn't make it to the install. We brought it up and were told they weren't in the notes. After the visit, the person who did the measure was more interested in their golf outing i guess. We were told to call and schedule the grommet install. We thought that meant it was a simple oversight and would be corrected. We got a text saying the grommet install would be an additional $150. We refused and were offered to split the difference; again, we refused, and I considered our business concluded. I'll resolve the issue myself. Again, the work is good. Be sure to go over the plan with a fine-tooth comb. As a side note, I was telling a friend this story, and was told a similar story about a missing item.

Tom was on time and prepared with wood samples and his portfolio, a tape measure, and sketching materials and followed me around my loft as my husband and I blabbed on about the various pieces we need made. He diligently took measurements, gave some great suggesstion I had not even thought of (rare, honestly), and was very engaging and professional. He could make virtually every piece we wanted (a built in L-shaped bar, custom shoe organizer/storage cabinet/room divider, custom laundry storage area, 2 vanities, 2 desks, shelving, and more. Tom showed us various samples of engineered materials he works with a lot to keep costs down, but then also showed us his complete custom work. We told him that we were not interested in the engineered look; we are going for a reclaimed wood/metal industrial vibe in our loft. He seemed hesitant to go that route, warning us it would be much more expensive than the engineered materials. WHile, I appreciated his concern about the cost - which IS a factor - I will not compromise the look we are going for in our home. He understood and left, promising a quote in two days. 24 hours later, Tom provided a comprehensive quote for the engineered wood (which I still asked him to give, so we could COMPARE the difference in costs) and two other sets of quotes with two materials that were closer to what I was going for. To be honest, I was shocked at the prices. I have been doing my research and these quotes were much higher than anticipated. I sent him a email back thanking him and letting him know that we would be going a different direction and showing him several links to others on etsy who make what we want at about 1/3rd the price. He took it very well, but oddly presumed and replied that they were all made in Mexico and he could not compete. They are not. The links I sent him are from Southern CA and from the midwest - they are all mom and pop shops (like him) that build themselves to your specifications, sell online, and ship all over the US in the style and material we are seeking. That being said, Tom was very prompt, professional, prepared, polite, and obviously skilled at what he does. I would not have any reason to believe that he wouldn't do excellent work if I was interested in the typical furniture styles in other homes. I just don't think the "industrial/distressed" look is his "bread and butter". If you need anything other than that, I would definitely suggest scheduling a free consultation with him. He is much more competent than a few others I have met. Looks like I will be ordering the pieces online and having them shipped. :(
