The ambiance is very quaint and cozy with lots of exposed red brick and a long stretch of bar seating overlooking the sushi chefs and several tables ranging from 4-8 seats. There is a decent amount of seating, but I highly recommend making a reservation, especially for weekends. It is a great place to go for date night or special occasions. The food can be a bit pricey with small quantities, but the fish is fresh and very high quality quality. The rainbow roll was a my favorite by far. Our server was very attentive and patient with us as we navigated the menu. The experience as a whole is what this review is about, but make no mistake that the sushi is spectacular and the chefs are doing the most. We had our reservation planned for over a month, a double birthday, and that wasn't acknowledged until just moments before we got our bill. Our waiter was a bit all over the place and the special vibe we had hoped for didn't happen, which they acknowledged and just made excuses for. Seated at a super tiny table that wobbled against a wall with no airflow - yikes. The service really impacted our experience in a negative way. Sushi like no other, honestly superb. The Seabass dish was well cooked but overall very sweet. The nori helped but it was like eating a dessert. The flaming wagyu dish was a bit anxiety inducing... but tasty overall. I visited a party of 3 for the first time last week and loved my experience. The restaurant seems to be always packed, so we settled for a reservation which proved to be the right choice given the long waiting time for walk-ins. The three of us at my table ordered the Lite Omakase, which included miso soup, sashimi, crudo, nigiri, poke bowl and tamago, separated by course. The standouts from the courses was the salmon crudo because of the great flavor of the sauce and the cut of the salmon. It was super thinly sliced and paired well with the acidity. The nigiri was a table favorite as well because of how buttery and fresh the fish was. The fish from each dish was high quality and well worth the price. An omakase meal like this for under 60 was shocking because the dishes were all so high quality, carefully thought out and overall very filling. The staff were attentive and friendly, and the ambiance of the restaurant was perfect for dining with a small group. I finally made it! I have been hearing all the rave about this place and as someone who absolutely LOVES sushi and Asian food, this one hit the nail on the head. Coming from Chicago and some of the most highly sought after restaurants, never had this experience before. The "Grand" Omakase at M Sushi is the best dining experience my wife and I have had in North Carolina to date. Curate in Asheville is close. Japanese cuisine - specifically, sushi - is my favorite type of food. I've had sushi at multiple places in Tokyo and my fair share of sushi and omakase in the States. I say that because M Sushi is up there with the best I've had. I can't say I'm surprised either based on everything I heard about this place. Everyone who's been to M Sushi gushes over it. Add me to the list. The Triangle is lucky to have this place. In 2022, this restaurant was the only restaurant in North Carolina to be named to OpenTable's top 100 places to eat in America. It opened in January 2016. According to a January 2022 article in the Triangle Business Journal, chef-owner Michael Lee (Korean descent) "is planning two new locations to open in Cary this year." You can check out Michael's Instagram account at @m_restaurants. Before dining here, I could tell Michael knew good sushi just by looking at his posts. He's not out to operate just another run-of-the-mill, trendy, and/or Americanized sushi joint. He knows what's truly good and "authentic" and has brought that to the Triangle. Simply put, this place is legit. The M Restaurants also include M Kokko (next door, casual Korean/Japanese chicken), M Pocha (Korean small plates), and M Tempura. I guess the "M" stands for the obvious, Michael. This place is popular. They use OpenTable for reservations. I'm a longtime fan of OpenTable because of the free dining points you earn from reservations. I recently used my points to redeem Amazon gift cards. I think less newer restaurants are using OpenTable these days, probably because there are cheaper options for restaurant owners (e.g., Resy). I was able to book our reservation same-week, but only because we went on a weeknight (Thursday at 7pm). Unlike some Japanese restaurants, no special reservation is required at M Sushi if you want omakase. If you want a weekend reservation, you'll probably have to book weeks in advance. The restaurant has a low-key storefront that's hidden from the main streets. You can drive right up to the entrance, but parking nearby is limited to a small pay lot. We street-parked for free less than a block away on E Chapel Hill St. Metered street parking is enforced Monday-Friday, 8am-7pm. A couple parking decks within short walking distance are the Durham Centre Parking Garage and the Chapel Hill Street Parking Garage. The vibe here felt like eating at a basement restaurant in Manhattan. Low, exposed ceilings, brick walls, sort of a confined space. The occupancy certificate on the wall showed a 127-person max capacity. Due to the pandemic, the sushi bar had clear partitions in between every two seats. My wife and I sat at the bar. We liked the partitions because they gave us some sound privacy. The menu was well thought-out. They don't hit you with pages of Americanized rolls, but instead with gems like Ishiyaki BBQ made with A5 Wagyu ($46) and Lobster Shabu-Shabu ($27). Below is what our omakase included plus the drinks we paired with it. What a great gem this place is in Raleigh, NC. I had the soup, salad, and roll combo to start. Miso soup was tasty, the salad was a surprise. Instead of the normal iceberg lettuce with ginger dressing they served a bowl of mixed greens with seaweed and radish shavings topped with a nice soy dressing of some sort. I could not get enough of the taste this dish had. Kept mixing the lettuce and seaweed up with the dressing at the bottom of the bowl. Awesome flavor!!! Then I had a spider roll; deep fried soft shell crab roll. With the nice crisp crunch of the crab to the soft taste of the rice and crunchy cucumber. This was also a great tasting entree. M Sushi is one of our favorite restaurants in the triangle to visit. We came on Friday for dinner at 6:15pm at the bar by making reservations on OpenTable. Their sushi bar setup is nice since they have the clear plastic dividers which provide some sound privacy despite being right next to another couple. If you have three or more, request a table reservation further in advance than if you were looking at bar seating since those reservations are the first to go. Drinks ordered: Dassai 45 Sake (300ml $36) per a recommendation from our waitress, Celeste. I enjoyed this one a lot and definitely recommend since she was right - it definitely paired well with all of the food received. When that was gone, but our meal wasn't finished yet, I ordered a glass of the Sayuri Nigori Sake (3oz $7). It's one of my favorites, so I knew I would enjoy it with the end of the meal. For an appetizer, my husband and I got the Ishiyaki BBQ ($52) which is A5 grade Japanese Wagyu beef that you cook on a stone heated by a small candle/fire tableside. Toppings are salt to go on the beef first and then chimichurri after cooking if desired. It is probably our favorite thing on the menu so even though we knew we would be full after our Omakase dinners, we had to get it. For entrée's, I ordered the Light Omakase ($56) while my husband ordered the Nigiri Omakase ($59). They gave us a wide variety of fish, though I don't remember all of the names: tuna, salmon, yellowtail, Spanish mackerel, scallop, tuna belly to name a few, and (luckily enough) my husband was pleased they gave him eel for his final piece of nigiri (his absolute favorite). Atmosphere: M Sushi is a moody and intimate sushi restaurant in the heart of downtown Durham. The restaurant wasn't too busy as we came on a Wednesday night with a reservation, but we'd recommend booking a reservation especially if dining in for a weekend dinner. Service: Our server, Ron, was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. Ron recommended the pineapple or pomegranate flavors. Our food also came out relatively quickly. Food: For drinks, we shared a Pineapple House Mixed Soda, which is a pineapple flavored Korean drinking vinegar mixed with club soda. Although we wanted to try the whitegrape and blueberry house mixed sodas (which were out), we very much enjoyed the pineapple flavor. It was slightly sweet and bright but not overly artificial, and we would highly recommend it as a great non-alcohol option. For the appetizer, we snacked on the edamame, which came in a bigger portion than what we were expecting. Next, we ordered the Sashimi Sampler, Twisted Mango Roll, and the Unagi Maki Roll. The Sashimi Sampler consisted of scallop, bluefin, salmon, yellowtail, amberjack, and seatrout placed gently atop a bowl of ice and thinly sliced radish. Each of the sashimi pieces were delicate, fresh, and so tender that it melted in our mouths - truly some of the best sashimi we've indulged in. However, our praises fall a little short at the next two dishes: the Twisted Mango and Unagi Maki rolls. The Twisted Mango had a great combination of ingredients - shrimp tempura, cucumber, crab meat, mango, and serrano, topped with sweet chili aioli and eel sauce - but all of the flavors and textures seemed to blur together in a bite, making it difficult to appreciate each of the individual elements of the roll. The Unagi Maki had a unique, fragrant and spicy taste to it, but the totality of the roll did not impress beyond those notes. It was filling but not necessarily a dish that we would crave again. Lastly, we finished off our evening with the Matcha Crepe Cake. The cake was not too sweet and made for a delightful dessert! We definitely wanted more of the mango creme anglaise which complemented the matcha taste well. However, there was a quality to the cake that felt like it came out of the fridge, as the cream filling closer to the edge of the cake was compact and almost icy. Overall: M Sushi is a fantastic experience that suffers slightly because of the lofty expectations created by the environment, price-point, and hype. The drinks and edamame starter were great, the Sashimi sampler was unforgettable, but M Sushi could not top itself afterwards with 2 rolls that fell a bit short for us. Oh my goodness, what a ripoff. Honestly the food was good, but $50 worth of food was delivered in a 3 x 5 container. This is price gouging in my opinion. The $18 sushi roll was 5 pieces, nothing special, and not as good as I've had at other sushi restaurants. This was a waste of money in my opinion. I was brought here for my birthday dinner recently for my first time. To say the least, I was very surprised by how fantastic this meal was! We ate at the bar, which my partner thought it was terrible he didn't get a table, but that was perfect for the omakase style dining we participated in. We got one omakase meal as well as a chirashi bowl and an additional roll. This was enough food for the both of us, leaving us very satisfied. The quality of the sushi and ingredients was very high. The presentation and careful handling of the ingredients was also clearly a level above other sushi restaurants in our area.
