Honestly, this is one of my favorite restaurants in TJ. It never disappoints! This small unassuming restaurant in a small strip mall has such fantastic freshly made food. I always get whatever agua fresca they have, today is orange and pineapple juice. The cafe de olla is really nice. They usually generously give you an a assortment of quesadillas as an appetizer on the house. Their soups are super delicious. I had the carnitas today and it was so flavorful and no salsa is needed, although they have 4 different salsas offered at each table. I highly recommend Maiz! Real Mexican food. This place has pambazos! If you never had try one, this is a good place to try them. Also all the plates are made with delicious blue corn. Even for vegans this is a great choice to go in TJ, just ask for the quesadillas without cheese and get some tlacoyos or sopes and you'll get a complete tasty meal. This has to be one of those places where you drive by and theres zero interest to stop. But when you do, you won't regret it. Great customer service. We were a party of 6 with a wheelchair member. We were asked to hold, in the meantime they were setting up a table where we could sit with the wheelchair and modified their layout so we could be comfortable. We got good customer service, Café De la Olla was good not too sweet, food was good, they bring out different salsas. I'm glad I stopped by this place to try it out . I've been here two different times for both their lunch and breakfast menu. The food was delicious. I ordered the quesadillas and sopes using blue corn tortillas for lunch and breakfast of champions with hot chocolate for breakfast. The servers were exceptionally nice and very delightful. Overall the vibe was cool, small , modern looking restaurant. It was nice of them to give us a free appetizer to try their sweet corn tamales. I would recommend this spot to anyone in the area. I wanted to try this place a few months ago and I finally got the opportunity to try it today. The decor is very nice with a modern 50's mexican look (haha best way I can describe it). Please push and not pull the door as you go in lol. the menus are very well rounded and they have many options for you to choose from and of course I went with the sampler platter that came with a bit of everything. Cheese to me is a very crucial detail and their quesadilla cheese I did not like. the pozole was very tasty, the pombaso (chorizo and potatoes) was also very good. The tlacayo with cactus salad was also good because the crumbled cheese gave it that oomph. Last but not least was the sope which was okay. All in all the only thing that would keep me coming back would be the quality of service and the natural drinks they offer. read more

They give Maíz corn to try in the beginning which was tasty, you also get 4 salsas to try with any dish you decide to order! It's in an unassuming small building, but as soon as you step in you feel like you're in one of the trendier places in San Diego's North Park given the wall of Instagram-worthy quotes and the menu that's attached to a cutting board. Despite this, it's not a hipster-only location and on a Saturday afternoon there was everyone from an old man eating solo in the corner, couples, to a group of 9 sitting in the middle. The atmosphere is great for anyone and everyone! DRINKS: Let's get this out of the way first--there's no alcohol on the menu. However, they have a wide range of non-alcoholic drinks. When we arrived, they were out of the flavored waters (aguas frescas), so I got a sparkling orangeade (naranjada mineral) while my girlfriend got a sparkling lemonade (limonada mineral). They were both fantastic and tasted fresh; we also saw pulp in both of those which really added to the flavor. Halfway through our meal, they were refilled with a cucumber-mint water and a watermelon water, and I tried the watermelon water which was nice and refreshing. APPETIZERS: While we were waiting, they brought along two tacos per person to try the salsas which were ordered from least spicy to most spicy. My girlfriend was a big fan of the third one (brownish colored salsa) which she found less spicy than the second (green) one. These tacos were a little bit on the fatty side, but hey, I'm not one to turn my nose up at a free bite! As far as ordering, get the sampler plate (tabla de antojitos) to try a bit of everything. You get a pambazo, picadita, quesdailla (your choice of filling), tlacoyo, and pozolito. We got the huitlacoche (corn fungus) as my girlfriend has been wanting to try it. Fun fact: It's also known as "Mexican truffle." This was fantastic, although I thought the pozole had a bit too much cabbage on top. For two of us, this was a great appetizer to share. We ordered three more of the quesadillas (pork, and two beef) that were excellent as well. ENTREES: We both ordered enchiladas. I got the chicken breast enchiladas with chipotle (enchiladas - pechuga de pollo con chipotle) and my girlfriend got the same but with mole. The chipotle ones were a little bit spicier than I was expecting, but still great! My girlfriend loved her mole ones, but noted that they could have used a bit more chicken inside of them. However, since there's three of them, it was very filling anyway. We were both stuffed by the end of the meal. Bottom line: The service was friendly and efficient, food was fantastic, and the price is right. For the two of us, the total came out to $36 USD. If you find yourself in Tijuana, definitely visit this place. We'll be returning as well! read more

Have you ever gone to place where you know the food is amazing, but you probably ordered the wrong thing? This was my experience here. My sister and I are on business in Tijuana, and we made our way over to the Maíz after reading a couple of reviews that mentioned chicharrón. My sister doesn't speak Spanish, and the waiter served us in Spanish. I'm conversationally fluent after spending a year in Peru, so I was able to successfully read the menu and order our meals. We went with agua de limón, quesadillas de chicharrón, arroz con frijoles, and they provided a complimentary appetizer to allow us to try their salsas. The appetizer was very good, but the quesadillas de chicharron left more to be desired. I expected the pork to be more throughly cooked, but it was very tender and basically only fat. The arroz con frijoles was fantastic and flavorful! If I ever return to Maiz I think I'll go with the quesadillas de bistec! read more

Extremely tasty food! I had decided to come to try this place because it seemed at it had good traditional Mexican breakfast, I was bummed to know that by the time I came they had stopped serving breakfast (they stop at 12 noon). I was disappointed and almost walked out but decided to stay. I'm glad I didn't walk out. They gave me complimentary tacos de la holla, a delicious small appetizer size soup (which after trying it I was already satisfied with this place) and then when I got my food (bistec al albañil) I was in heaven. I dont ever drink coffee without creamer and this coffee didnt need anything else, it was prepared perfectly. i ordered limonada and it was refreshing, perfectly sweetened. Came here for lunch, and there was a decent amount of costumers but the employees where very kind and attentive, and constantly where checking on us to make sure we had everything we needed. The salsa selection was top-notch, and had varying spicy levels for everyone. I ordered sampler, which is a great idea as you can taste 5 items in smaller versions, and you can customize them however you want. It also came with a small bowel of possible, which was very bland, and stopped then from earning a 5 star since posole is one of my favorite foods and they just didn't do justice. The house made aqua fracas where both very good the day we went. This is a good place to stop in for lunch or dinner and we will be returning. read more

I almost walked out. After sitting me down and handing me a menu, the waitstaff seemed to forget my existence. And then there`s the, um, ambiance. The restaurant is unattractively situatated with large glass windows looking out into a parking lot. A wall-mounted television spews out annoying pop tunes in English creating a somewhat frenzied atmosphere not conducive to digestion. I was thinking Maiz`s high Yelp rating was some sort of prank when the waitress started bringing out the food: first an open wooden box containing four salsas arranged from mild to hot along with two complimentary tacos de canasta to sample them with, followed by an antojito sampler plate. I took a bite and began to understand. Where Maiz doesn`t disappoint is flavor. These are not the diluted donkey-with-a-sombero flavors you expect in a bordertown. These are home-cooked flavors straight out of your remote mountain village Mexican dreams. Where do they keep the abuela who got up at 4am to tend the simmering cazuelas of mole and stewed meats? I found this place via yelp and have been trying many places with high ratings, and this place has been my favorite so far. Although the seating is a bit cramped the service here is amazing. That is the first thing I want to touch base on. They were very attentive to our table of four and brought us our drinks (and refills) as soon as we asked, and were very patient while we sat and wondered what to order. The service here trumps most other restaurants I've been to here and back in the states. Very satisfied. We ordered a couple of appetizers, the fondue, three quesadilla plate, and were given an additional variety of tacos al vapor (bean and cheese, carnitas, and chicharon YUM!) on the house. They were all very delicious. The tacos on the house stood out from the appetizers not that the rest weren't delicious because they definitely were, but those tacos al vapor hit the spot. The beans here are so delicious I could eat them all day with tortillas and be happy, but what was better than their beans were the carnitas plate. They were perfectly cooked with a flavor worth bragging about. I know what I am getting the next time I come back. We also got enchilidas, steak plate and a sampler plate. All pretty delicious. If they have it available do yourself a favor and get the Pineapple Orange Agua fresca. I had 4 refills so that should tell you how amazing it was. read more
