there's always a wait at this store i just don't understand. other than the fact that the store has extensive menu item, theres nothing overwhelming about the taste, the service, the ambience, basically anything! the salmon with rice was extremely bland. i really don't think there was any seasoning on the salmon. it's called japanese style salmon but still i expect some taste... the potted plant milk tea is just a regular milk tea with ice and a layer of cream with crushed oreo on top. it's really just milk tea with some decorations. i don't know what i'm paying the premium for. i'd rather go to an authentic taiwanese franchise bubble tea place for milk tea. i suppose the only good thing about this extensive menu is... if you want to eat a full meal but your meal buddy only wants a dessert, you can come here and both get what you want! read more

There's a lot of hype for this place but I don't feel their desserts really deliver... We tried the marshmallow with the ice cream center, milk pudding, waffles, and the mochi. To start, the water tastes like bleach or chlorine. The mochi wasn't soft or fluffy.. Just really chewy and the only thing you can taste is whatever powder is sprinkled on top. The waffles were made of tapioca like dough so it feels very under cooked and extra chewy.. not a fan. Doesn't do anything for the flavor. The marshmallow looks interesting but it was so chewy it made it a little gross. I expected something melty and sticky and a delicious toasted marshmallow flavor with yummy ice cream in the middle. It was not that. It was a thick "marshmallow" shell made of what I think is more tapioca mix with so little ice cream in the middle.. tastes like nothing... The milk pudding was okay. The flavors are not strong enough. Congee Queen and Kenny's noodles does it way way better! I will say, the service is quick and friendly despite the horrible food. My Taiwanese girlfriend thinks that I appreciate Chinese cuisine more than Taiwanese cuisine so I accepted her prompting to come here for dinner tonight. Apparently this place is popular with the youth. It wasn't too busy for a Monday, we were seated immediately and water was served. Wow, talk about long menus; 14 pages of appetizers and main items, 6 pages of desserts! Our order was promptly taken after mulling over our choices. We selected: Taiwanese style stewed beef ramen $12.99, Deep fried tofu w/garlic sauce $8.99, Deep fried squid ball 8.99, and a Taiwanese style pan fried chicken w/basil, ginger, onion on rice 11.99. Although the food was prepared quickly it did not live up expectations as every Taiwanese dish including the ramen soup seemed too salty. The squid ball was cut into quarters likely to speed up frying/cooking time which dried out the meat. We noted these things to our Server who comp'd our chicken on rice dish; this saved a 2-star review rating. Overall, the service was excellent, ambiance casual, and decor nice. Came here a few times, always busy and need to wait to be seated. Food here is good, I always enjoy it. Last time I ordered their matcha mochi waffle dessert and it was soooo yummy! Inside is pretty clean and spacious. The iron fencing, dim lighting, and interesting artwork along the walls really gives it that café feel. Washrooms were also pretty nice. When we were seated a waitress came to provide menus and an ordering sheet. She then looked up in deep thought and then changed the table number on the order sheet. Guess she might've been new and wasn't sure which table this was. You get a meal menu and a dessert menu. Both menus have a good number of pictures for reference if you're not sure what to get, and there's definitely a lot of variety. Ordering is done on a sheet, which can be useful if you don't like talking to waitresses. It can be more efficient I suppose. We ordered a Hokkaido Molten Cream Cheese Tart. It was pretty good: hot and crispy skin, with somewhat dense cream cheese. Not sure if I'd pay $11.99 for two pieces though. All of the food coming from other tables looked and smelled great too! When you're getting the bill, they also include a feedback form that you can fill out. Looking at some of the questions, it looks like the waitress was supposed to do more than what she had done lol The person that brought over our bill got the bill mixed up. The bill itself has the table number, but it was a different person from before so can't say tell if someone got the table number wrong. This place is super awesome for instagram! The warm light and cool vintage decor backgrounds really go well with any picture. There is also a painted mural on the wall opposite the bar that gives the place a nice adventurous night feel. We ordered the taro coconut snow shakes and matcha honey toast tower as some cool late night desserts. The shakes tasted great and had lots of nice thick slush. The matcha honey tower tasted fine but I think would be better with more actual cold ice cream and less foam. We didn't try any savoury dishes this time but will definitely come back at an earlier time to do so. read more

Decided to come here for a late night snack around 12 am because other dessert places were closed. Towards the end of our meal we noticed something crawling along our seats, it was a cockroach... absolutely disgusting. Prior to noticing the cockroach, I would like to note that their service has improved significantly since my first review. Our cups were constantly topped off with water and the employees were relatively attentive. However, our food came extremely slow, took roughly 45 minutes for our cheese bowl to arrive. Staff was good with their service and addressed problem quickly to the benefit of the customer. The only reason I give a 4-star instead of 5 is because the floor felt sticky when I walked on it. Came here for the first time today due to my friends recommendation, and it was not bad. Like majority of the reviews say, the menu is very extensive. Theres food ranging from curry to rice bowls and noodle and hotpot! I got the sour and spicy noodle and it wasn't what I expected, I feel like it was more sour than spicy. I wanted to try one of their drinks but to be honest it is quite expensive so didn't. Note: You get a free plate of milk pudding if you share a photo of their food. It was really good!! Been here a few times and finally got the chance to review. Interior is really nice (modern, hipster) and with a dark (yet warm) lightning. They do have large seatings, but it's usually packed during lunch/dinner hours. Good thing they open till 2am for any late night smackers. Service is also good, waitress tries to be as informative and well mannered as they can while under a hectic, busy environment. Tried lunch and dinner here. They have a lunch menu so it's a bit more convenient and worthy of the price. Lunch sets include standard Taiwanese sausage rice or minced meat rice or black pepper sauce pork chop rice. It's a good fusion and comfort food feeling of Taiwanese and Japanese style cuisine. And price worthy for an included bubble tea! Dinner specials include their Japanese theme hot pot (mixed with some Taiwanese style food) or stone pot rice. The hot pot is good for sharing and enough to feed 2 people. I enjoyed the sukiyaki and the milk cheese (the best). Overall it's a nice place to grab a quick meal or hang out with a few friends. It wasn't my first time here but I had an interesting experience on my last visit which I thought I would share. A server dropped a glass cup onto the floor which shattered and one of the pieces flew under the table and cut my ankle. It was a small cut but still hurt and bled nonetheless, so I asked for a bandaid. Multiple staff came to apologize and said I could come back if my cut required further treatment. They gave us 20% off our bill. Obviously it wasn't a happy experience but to be honest for an Asian place I thought they handled it pretty well. Onto the food... their menu is very extensive as they have separate drinks and dessert menus. Their specialty is the hotpot for one, which is offered in a variety of spicy or non-spicy flavours. Their menu has a heavy Taiwanese influence, with a lot of noodle and rice dishes and also bubble tea and grass jelly desserts. Overall their quality of food and drinks are good, and there is something for everyone. There always seems to be a long wait for a table regardless of how late you come, so I wouldn't come here if I was starving. MABU is one of the best places for popcorn chicken and the sauce that comes with it gives the perfect cooling balance (some kind of aioli). Walking into here I was caught off guard by so many people saying Good Morning when I was there at night, kinda funny actually. But first things first, the menu to Mabu Generation is extensive and can be a little overwhelming when deciding on what you want to eat. I ended up getting the cheese udon noodle which has tobiko flakes, smoke salmon, bacon, chicken, seaweed, an egg, and mushrooms. The initial taste was very tasty with the cheese but towards the end it just got very salty with the smoke salmon and bacon. Service wasn't too bad. I was there with a group of 13 people and one of the servers checked up on us and made sure we were okay and asked if we needed anything else. Came here on a Friday around 12:30 am, place was still pretty full. If you are looking for late night food this place is pretty good. Last call for kitchen is around 1-1:30. The dessert menu is huge. There were tons of items to choose from. Going to have to go back to try some of the other items. For dessert, I shared (it is pretty filling, share it) brick toast in honey with matcha ice cream and red beans. This was amazing. Taste was really good and aesthetically appealing as well. There are some corn flakes in their to give it a nice crunch and layers of custard to hold it together like building blocks. The honey and toast together has that campfire marshmallow taste and their matcha and red bean pair so well together. Only negative about the dessert is that it takes 20-30 min to prepare (but wait staff did warn us when ordering which was nice, to set expectations). Ordered a mango slush as well. Flavour was a little on the under whelming side (could have been because of the sweetness of the dessert) Will definitely be going back. Lots of chicken and rice with some vegetables and tofu on the side. Good portions, good taste overall. My SO and I got the popcorn chicken with mayo, it was really hot and crispy when it arrived to the table. Ive seen the sign of this place for quite a while but have yet to try it. My girl came in town and since we havent seen each other for so long, just dinner wasnt enough to catch up with everything. And its says you are guaranteed a seating within 45mins otherwise you get a complimentary drink or something. The food smells pretty good. I will definitely come back to try it. My sister brought me here to try the milky hot pot. At first, it sounded weird to mix hot pot and milk. Surprisingly, flavors blends pretty well. I would recomment to share a pot, otherwise you get sick of the taste easily. So my sister and I shared one pot and added a fried tofu appetizer. I haven't been to Mabu for .... almost 10 years so figured I'd revisit. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. It's so much nicer inside than Sugar marmalade lol, the atmosphere is totally different! I was honestly really surprised by the good service, everyone was friendly and quite attentive. Food wise, we got a popcorn chicken and a mango toast tower. They arrived at the same time because we ordered the toast first. Popcorn chicken is good as any other place, nothing special. The toast tower was interesting, some places have 3 large stacks of toast, but this place does it with a lot of mini toast cubes! Much easier to break apart to eat. (My bf could stuff one whole cube in his mouth! but I prefer to break it into 2-3 pieces... haha). The mango was a bit sour, but it was fine since everything else was sweet. The toast cubes were crispy outside and soft inside. I will say the music and general atmosphere is quite loud, so it's not a great place to have deep conversations. But it does have great energy. 3.5 stars. Located in the First Markham Place plaza, stopped by for dinner as the menu intrigued us. Their menu is huge - they have a big drinks, food and dessert menu. They have hot pot, rice bowls, pasta, fried snacks etc. - pretty solid menu to satisfy multiple cravings. We ordered their okonomiyaki fries to start which were pretty tasty, but the portion was a bit too much to share between 2 people with their own entrees (aka too much food). I got their grilled chicken and pork with mapo tofu over rice with an onsen egg and it was delicious. Super tasty grilled meats, spicy mapo tofu and a nice and creamy egg. Fantastic comfort food, I will definitely be back again for that dish. My husband got their deep fried curry pork chop with rice which also came with fries. This place is a favourite of my partner's family and we popped in a few days ago for his brother's birthday. It's a neat little spot - doesn't look like much from the outside but has some cool decor inside. Lots of vintage movie posters and movie-themed doo-dads. The ordering process was a bit unusual - you scan a QR code for the menu, and add things to your cart as if online shopping. However there's about three steps to actually send your order through, so there was definitely some "wait, I didn't send this through yet, no wonder it's not here." That said, they were pretty quick with bringing food out, for the most part! We got the Taiwanese popcorn chicken to share at the table, which was SO good. Great dipping sauce! I got a minced pork and rice bowl which was delicious. My partner's parents got the milk and cheese basad seafood hotpot, my partner got the Japanese-Style Sukiyaki with Udon (his feedback was it was a bit too sweet), and his brother got the Japanese-Style Spicy Miso with vermicelli. Overall everyone was really happy with their meal, and we topped it off with an Ice Cream Lava Cake with Sea Salt Cheese (very tasty but WAY too expensive at 16 bucks for what it is). Creamy Sauce Smoked Salmon, Bacon on Spaghetti (13.99) - If you like smoked salmon, garlic, bacon and cream sauce, this is the dish to get! It's topped with nori and bonito flakes, which added to the umami flavour. Decently sized so I had to share it. I would order this again. Baked Cheese with Minced Pork Red Curry Sauce on Rice + Popcorn Chicken (15.99) - For this price, not worth it due to the small portions. The Taiwanese Fried Chicken was good, didn't need to use the sweet & spicy mayo. While the curry was good, the portion sizing was lacking. They had a raw egg added to the bottom too which, once you mixed in the yolk, it actually diluted the curry flavour too much. Sesame green latte (complimentary 4.99 drink) - They used black sesame powder. The first few sips were alright but gritty. Unfortunately as the ice melts, it dilutes the tea to the point where it just tastes like black sesame powder in water Japanese Style Soybean Milk Tiramisu (13.99) - Not recommended. It just felt like japanese sponge cake with layers of cream sprinkled with some soybean powder. While I enjoyed the salty/chocolate crunch layer, if you don't like sweet & salty things, you will be disappointed. I wouldn't call it a tiramisu, just a cream cake with some sponge cake. Overall, due to the stiff competition in Markham, I won't be back anytime soon. But, if you're looking for a wide selection of asian food, this is the place to be! read more

I came here several times for lunch, dinner and desserts when it first opened and the place had long waiting queue. I came back again to visit after a few months and hoped the hype would have settled down but it didn't. Despite the same long waiting time, I was glad to see that they were willing to compensate their customers by offering a choice of free milk pudding or a free drink under $4.99 if the waiting exceeded over 45 minutes. However, this special offer was only written on the waiting ticket in fine print in Chinese. So if you don't know how to read Chinese, you probably wouldn't know unless the servers tell you (but now you do!). You also get 10% discount if you pay cash :) ENVIRONMENT: 4/5 The place is pretty big, hip and modern with large art mural of Taipei's famous JiuFen town. Certainly can accommodate small party of two to large groups. FOOD: 4/5 Their menu was massive with a separate menu for desserts and drinks. They offered a good variety of Asian items (mainly Taiwanese and Japanese), pastas, rice and hot pots. I love getting their mini hot pots, mainly because there were plenty different flavours/options to choose from and easy to share. My favourite was the Milk & Cheese Seafood hot pot, wonderful broth and plenty of seafood. The Lamb with Pickled Cabbage hot pot was very appetizing as well. I was also very excited to see that they offered Taiwanese style oyster omelets as not a lot of places served them. Popcorn chicken was crispy, just a bit more batter than meat but I'd still recommend it. So far, I hadn't been disappointed in their food yet. DESSERT: 3/5 I tried their cheese tarts but but the shell was a bit hard and the cheese texture wasn't the creamy, molten lava type that I liked. I was very surprised to see that they had Japanese Taiyaki in their menu but it cost $11 for a piece. I thought it was overpriced. The milk pudding was alright as it was free for me at the time but I probably wouldn't order them here. Overall, I felt that their desserts were more on the pricey side. SERVICE: 4/5 The staff was very tentative and friendly. They did regular check ups and water refills which I especially appreciated. You can never go wrong with mabu, they have the widest selection of food you are bound to find something you like. I loved the fried tofu, i tell them to put sauce on the side so it doesnt get soggy. Their fries were very chrispy and minced pork rice is always good, not dry. read more

I came here with a group of my friends for dessert on a weekend evening. Even though there was a long line, the hostess was kind to check-in with my group to let us know how long the wait is and when our table will be ready. When we finally got seated to our table, I loved how they served us water, and not just any plain water, but water infused with lemon. I believe the lemon water is a great balance for the dessert; it's something sour to counter all the sugar being consumed. Also, I loved how they refilled your water throughout the night without your asking; I have been to some places where you have to ask multiple amount of times in order to get water. I ordered the rose milk tea and it was just delicious! Not only was the drink a perfect balance of the rose fragrance but I also loved how the milk foam was froathed just right. I highly recommend this drink!! As a group we got the matcha red bean honey brick toast and the first bite was out of this world amazing and the next few bites were, "ehhh, okay, I think I've had enough now." I kind of wished that the matcha flavour would be infused into the toast as it was just powder sprinkled on top. As well, with so much toast and only one scoop of ice cream on top, it was hard to divide amongst the five of us how much ice cream we all get. Nonetheless, I am extremely grateful that we shared this dessert, it is not a dish for one to conquer on their own--unless he/she happens to be very hungry. Between the five of us, we all had about 3-4 pieces of toast, which is pretty awesome! The complementary milk pudding dessert was delicious; I personally enjoyed it more than the honey brick toast. Although the paper MABU icon was a bit off-putting as a friend thought it was white chocolate and almost put the paper in his mouth. MABU isn't really as hype as it seems to sound. Maybe I just ordered the wrong dishes but this time around, the food didn't stand out to me. After all, the prices for the hot pot did go up quite a bit and are a whopping $18.99. I got the House Special Hot Pot and unless you have really really REALLY high spice tolerance you should not be getting this. There is a special "MaLa" which is an Asian styled spice that gives the soup base an extra zing with every drop you taste. Because of this, I wasn't able to enjoy the things added inside as much but I do have to say, there was some kind of intestine in there that did not taste pleasant at all. While I was eating from this hot pot, all I could think about was how easy this would have been to make at home, all the more to regret paying ~$20 for this average dish. It was also my first time eating here on a weekday so I decided to order from the lunch specials. All I got was a pork cutlet and rice with some sauce overtop and fries on the side. Not impressed. It was also advertised that there was a dessert portion but all that was given was a 5x5x5cm cube of pudding? The only thing that met its standard was the milk tea that was included in this combo for $12.99. However, I suggest you stay away from the lunch menu and order from the sizzling plates. I really wish I could say the food here was better but maybe a next visit will change my mind. read more

Parking sucks in this plaza. Food was pretty good apart from the cheese cake. I wouldn't recommend the matcha cheese cake it was strange. The spaghetti and chicken cutlet was good, huggge cutlet. I've had the raindrop cake and it was delicious but not worth 10$ There's only one tv and if you're not sitting near the windows this pillar is going to block the tv and you won't be able to watch the game. read more

Coming into the place, I honestly didn't have much expectations, as fellow Yelpers haven't had tooo much great things to comment about. The ambiance and decor was great. A mesh of current and vintage Taiwan pop culture. The service for me was actually pretty good, it was dinner and fairly busy, yet the servers would come around a lot and ask if our hotpot needed to add soup or add fuel to our fire. We were asked various times, how was the food etc. I agree with my fellow Yelpers that the menus are HUGE. The food was not too bad. Well I guess maybe what we ordered was ok. Probably cause my friend had visited before and did the ordering. We ordered the seafood cheese hotpot, pork jowl donburi and Taiwanese popcorn chicken. We all got a pot of their brown sugar longan and ginger black tea. The hotpot was actually quite tasty. Using a cream based soup with tons of veggies, tofu, some frozen seafood (not super impressed with the seafood, but I'll get to that in a bit) bonito flakes and a little bit of processed cheese. The soup overall was nice and was very much like the soup base that you would find in a mussel dish. The addition of the bonito flakes gave it a very nice smoky flavour. The seafood seemed to be the frozen kind, while large in size had very little flavour to it's meat. They served it all in a small wok like pot over a blue brick of fuel. The servers would come around to ask if we needed to add soup to the pot or they would replace the brick when they walked by and noticed that the fire was out (which I can appreciate instead of having to constantly wave someone down to do it). The hotpot also came with a half of a thing of instant noodles. The donburi was...eh ok. The rice and sauce was fairly bland and the egg that's usually on top of the meat was kind of a poached style egg in the corner of the bowl. The saving grace to this dish was the pork jowl itself. The pork was very well marinated. Not too salty. The popcorn chicken was a bit of a disappointment, I mean this is a staple in most Taiwanese restaurants. It reminded me of westernized popcorn chicken. Taiwanese style should have more seasoning, the one we got was more like fried pieces of chicken. The tea was wonderful! Not too sweet with the addition of the ginger. Served hot and on a metal rack with a tea light to keep it hot. Overall experience wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Would I come again, well not a hard no but not something I would be itching to go to a lot. read more
