My family and I have been loyal, weekly patrons of Macayo's for 36 years-coming in 1 to 2 times every single week. But since the change in ownership, the quality, service, and value have completely fallen off a cliff. Tonight was the absolute last straw. We always call ahead to ask if our favorite server, Espy, is working, because the customer service otherwise has become atrocious. Espy is fantastic and the only reason we still try to come here. Tonight, we called and asked if Espy was working, and the person on the phone said yes. We asked if she'd be there until close, and the manager, Jeff, responded with, "I hope not." We pulled up to the restaurant less than five minutes later and asked for her section, only for Jeff to tell us he had already cut her for the night, knowing full well we had just called and were coming specifically for her. Jeff the manager was extremely rude, unprofessional, and dismissive. We walked right out and took our business elsewhere tonight, and we feel terrible for Espy because she is genuinely amazing and deserves better. This interaction is just the final nail in the coffin after watching this restaurant go downhill: Zero Customer Support: We actually reached out directly through the customer service link on the Macayo's website back in July to share these exact concerns and issues, hoping someone cared. They never even acknowledged or responded to our email. Shrinkflation & Portions: Portion sizes have drastically shrunk. Far less meat in the burritos, barely any beans and rice, and they nickel-and-dime you over chips and salsa. Stingy Takeout Policy: On multiple takeout orders, they hand you a huge bag of chips with a tiny 4-oz cup of salsa and claim "new management policy" prevents them from giving any more. Gutted Deals: They eliminated the loyalty points program, cut kids' meal deals from two per adult to one, scrapped the summer "Kids Eat Free" daily deal, and neutered Happy Hour. Refusing Advertised Coupons: Just last month, we brought a party of 14 people and management refused to honor the active 20% off Mi Coupon that is still advertised on their own website and app. Between Jeff's atrocious management, total lack of response from corporate, the drop in food quality, and the complete elimination of customer appreciation, there is zero reason left for us to support Macayo's. This is anything but authentic Mexican. Flavors are bland to ok only - nothing really stood out as a WOW moment to my family. All the food seemed to be fresh out of a can or bottle. Drinks (Margaritas) were watered down and also fresh out of bottle instead of freshly made. The beers were not ice cold either. The ambiance feels authentic but that's it. My mother called in a lunch order for pick up for us. We ordered 2 enchilada platters for the both of us. Chicken for me and beef for her. She picked it up and there were 3 containers. One had two enchiladas with rice & beans. The second had only one enchilada with rice & beans and the last container had only one enchilada. The employee told her she wasn't sure why the cook (or whoever plated it) put one enchilada separately but that the order was correct. My mother asked verifying that it was and the employee insisted it was. Both enchilada plates were with red sauce and none of the containers were marked to distinguish between chicken or beef and no real way of checking as they were obviously covered in sauce. Once home with the meals, I cut into one and it was chicken so we assumed the other two containers were beef. The one that was with the rice & beans was chicken and the other enchilada by itself was cheese. Talk about disappointment! Half the order was incorrect. It's about a 15 min drive from our house to the restaurant. I insisted my mom call and get it corrected. With prices and service they way there are, this is unacceptable! She phoned and the employee on the phone was friendly and said she could come pick up a new correct platter. That's fine and all but really, it's just inconvenient and redicz having to go back. Half the order incorrect and the small salsa and smashed chips with our order was just icing on a crappy cake. Two platters and they send a tiny cup of salsa for two adults??? My poor mother did go back to pick up her correct meal and they gave her a larger salsa with a better bag of chips. The second salsa size should come with an order for two meals automatically. I told my mother that we'll find a new place. While the employee she interacted with was friendly, just the poor service is not worthy of anyone's money nowadays. NO ONE should have to drive back for an incorrect order. The kitchen is doing a poor job of giving out incorrect meals and also not labeling the boxes. I'm sure if they had labeled C for chicken and B for beef, this whole issue could have been avoided. Seems like common sense to me. Do better Macayo's! read more

This Mexican restaurant isn't very authentic. The food was disappointing overall--tasted like it was pre-made and then microwaved, and some dishes were dry and not fresh. The drinks felt more like basic bar cocktails than anything special. Prices aren't really any cheaper than other spots, so it didn't feel worth it for the quality. Place has lots seatings, not a long wait. Service is decent. Overall, I would probably check other Mexican restaurants out. read more

One of the best Mexican restaurants in the area. They used to only be 120 years ago, now they're broke out across the Phoenix area. Some of the best tasting Mexican food I have had. The Mikael is a place to stop when you're in the Phoenix area. Our service at this restaurant was outstanding. Waitress was excellent professional, and took the time to explain the new menu to us. We had a so-so experience. This is a restaurant with decent bones- it seems like it's a very old restaurant, with how worn and torn the booth seats are--sad. This restaurant is not really that old-- it should replace torn booth seats. We had to wait a long time to be seated when there were lots of empty tables-hmmm. The food is midrange-- good but not exceptional. I really think with some improvements, this restaurant could hold its own in this tough market. I hope they make improvements as I really would hate for them to close as they have a wonderful setup and premise. read more

Great customer service. Friendly and efficient. The margarita flight was delightful for $9.99; lots of flavors to choose from. The food has gotten progressively worse and worse over the years but I'm trying to hold on to my youthful joy of this place. Today, I've decided to give up hope... I understand "shrink-flation" and the inability to hire, train and retain employees but this is a little too much. $3.29 for a tablespoon of guacamole and of course to save money they don't buy proper containers and lids, so the hot sauce spilled all over the bag and other containers. I have made my last trip to Macayo's. What used to be my go to Mexican restaurant has slid to t the bottom of the barrel. I went in with my sister and we both ordered a chimichanga. It was disgusting. It was obviously pre made and microwaved. I ate about 1/3 of it because I was hungry the I gave up it was mushy and sauce was tasteless. My sister barely touched hers. We waited for the waitress to return to pay her but after awhile we gave up and I was just leaving cash on the table when she came over and gave me the bill. I told her the food was horrible and she offered to discount it. I said don't bother or add the discount to your. I always tip even forbade food and bad service. My mother was a waitress. We came in for lunch around noon, there was no hostess around for a long time so many people came to the front and piled up and no one was sitting in the restaurant and we were all put on a wait for 15 to 20 minutes. I've been in the restaurant industry, but it saddens me because even when we got seatedthe waitress took forever to come even greet us and I never wanna write a bad review about someplace, but this is the third time I've been there and it's the same consequences that come out. I ordered my "normal", Two Chile Rellenos with rice and beans and a Texas Margarita (maybe 2). My server, Espy was very cordial, helpful and pleasant. I was there just after 6 PM and it wasn't busy and sitting at a table in the bar where they have "open seating" I was able to sit immediately. On Saturday, March 7th, my husband and I went out for dinner and drinks at one of our usual neighborhood spots. Since this restaurant is just around the corner, we typically come here a couple of times a week. We're there almost every Monday evening and often stop in for a lunch date during the week. Unfortunately, this visit was a complete disaster. We recently got a new puppy and decided to bring him along since the patio is pet-friendly. It was actually our first time sitting in the patio area. I ordered my usual drink: a Cadillac margarita with a side of Grand Marnier. When the waitress brought the drinks, the Grand Marnier "float" was served on the side in a standard shot glass, which normally holds about 1.25 oz - 1.5 oz. However, the glass was filled less than a quarter of the way. Honestly it looked like maybe a tablespoon of liquor, and that's being generous. I asked the waitress about it, and she explained that she was new and currently on her third day of training. She had been instructed that the float should be 1.5 oz. Lol I pointed out that what was in the glass wasn't even close to a half ounce and asked to speak with the manager. The manager came out with a noticeable attitude and insisted that this was what they consider a "float" for their Cadillac margarita. She even suggested that I must have been receiving free alcohol on previous visits. My husband looked at me completely confused and clearly irritated. The manager also mentioned that a shot of Grand Marnier costs $8, as if I was asking for something for free. At that point, I told her to keep the drinks and we got up and left. If less than a tablespoon is considered a float for a Cadillac margarita, then this restaurant is seriously misleading customers. I do want to say that the waitress was very kind and clearly trying her best. This situation was not her fault, and I wish her the best. Unfortunately, the management's lack of customer service completely ruined the experience. I'll never understand how people with terrible attitudes end up in management positions especially when dealing with customers. After leaving, we went up the street to Rio Mirage, where we had dinner and excellent margaritas. That will definitely be our new go-to spot for better food, better drinks, and far better customer service. read more

Not sure if this is common for this location but the service was a zero before the food was even ordered. Hostess is MIA. I had to track down someone to be seated and had to stand around and wait for a high chair while the people seated after me were waited on. The tables and floor are sticky and unhygienic feeling. There's about 4 inches of grime around the entire perimeter of the restaurant. The plates are searing hot but the food is cold. The tacos just ooze grease when bitten into. Childs cheese crisp is almost burnt. I would not recommend this Macaos to anyone I liked. read more

Loving the salsa still. The chips not so much. Some chips in the bag are great like they always have been. Some taste terrible like they were cooked in old oil. I called the location to see if To-Go is open. They were saying it is each time, but pulling up. The door is locked. I just got into the front and order through the host. Ordered takeout after seeing the Nachos Supreme special advertised on the website for $8.99. There was no indication on the special page that the price was dine-in only. When I picked up my order, I was charged about $17 for the nachos and was told the special only applied to dine-in customers. What was confusing is that the restaurant still honored the $3 Taco Tuesday special on the same takeout order. I showed the website listing and asked about the discrepancy, but the charge remained. I have been eating at this Macayo's since it opened in 2004. I have always loved the Baja sauce. It's amazing. Service is wonderful when you get Melanie. If she is not there we leave because service is inconsistent otherwise. So do yourself a favor and make sure you ask for Melanie! I've been coming to this establishment since 2008, I purchased and still have the original margarita mug. The past several (at least 5 years the frozen margarita machine) is a hit and mostly miss, because of this continuing problem and it is a huge problem it puts big pressure on the staff and back log on the service. The staff is trying very hard to please everyone and their margaritas but it's become poor quality. The bartender is doing his or her best but it's not working. Brooke-lynn took really good care of us. She never let the drinks get empty, she made sure we had everything we needed and when the food came out she gave us enough time to make sure it was tasting fine and checked again.
