This used to be my favorite spot in LC. My wife and I would eat here at least once a week. You could go there, eat great food, drink beers from all over the world, have a great time, all for a reasonable price. And then, something changed. Our favorite menu items started disappearing, the food prices started going up, and then one last thing happened that has caused me to go from a once-a-week customer to a MAYBE once-a-year customer.... they went up on their beer prices (which were already marked up considerably higher than other restaurants and bars) big time!!!! To give you an example, I used to drink Chimay when I would go. After their price increase, Chimay ran $16+ for one 11.2 oz bottle!!! That same bottle of beer is $5 at Pappy's right down the street! Their food is still good and their beer selection is excellent. So if you are looking for a different place to eat and drink a variety of beers and you don't mind dropping some serious coin, it should definitely be on your list. As for me, I will return annually in hopes of seeing those astronomical beer prices drop back to a level that is not so insanely high. I was very excited when MacFarlane's opened. It was a cool place and exactly what we needed here in Lake Charles - a pub atmosphere, a ton of beer, and good food. Well, the atmosphere and beer are good, but MacFarlane's food has gone down hill. Their batter they used to fry everything is *way* too salty. It's not just me, it's every at our table that shares the same opinion. Also, there food is not freshly cooked. We complained to the wait staff, and they insisted that our food was cooked to order. It's impossible. If I order a chicken breast, it's impossible you cooked it in under 5 minutes. What actually happened is they had already cooked it, and just microwave heated it - absolutely disgusting. The food sucks. At first it was cool eating Irish food, but MacFarlanes dropped the ball here. read more

I am a Lake Charles local and we were so excited to find this place! Actually, my dad introduced my husband and I and there was no turning back. Trivia night is a blast, just got there about an hour early for a table. The drinks are great. I always ask for suggestions. I am not a huge fan of beer, so I LOVE the wedding cake martini, lemon mirangue (sp?) martini, and hummingbird water. All the guys I know love the beer. It is a little pricey because most of it is in bottles. The appetizers are ridiculously amazing. "The Dip" & the Spinach and Artichoke dip are to die for. The fried pickles and peppers are another table favorite. Generally, I'm so full on drinks and apps that I don't eat. But the roast beef sandwiches, burgers, crab cakes, fried green tomatoes, shepherds pie, and some chicken dish (sorry don't remember specifically what it was) have been thoroughly enjoyed at our table. Literally the best experience while vacationing in Lake Charles!!! Go during happy hour (2-6) and prepare to be in heaven. Their drinks are out of this world!! Some of their appetizers are even half off. Our waitress was very patient as we were dazed at our menu and offered the best suggestions for us. We got the Mac burger which was to die for!!! The drunken bread pudding is so good as well. Can't wait to make the 2 hour drive back just to get lunch. read more

I had a late business lunch there yesterday, and it was a really good experience. It is such an unusual menu with lots of variety. I had the Redfish Louie. It was delicious and hot. The Blarney Stone jalapeno poppers were absolutely delicious, and I don't even really like jalapeno peppers. This place is what it says it is...a pub. You should tailor your expectations before you walk in the door. That being said, I enjoyed the couple hours I spent here with some friends. They have a great beer selection and I really loved the ambiance and overall feel of the place (maybe that's cause I'm Irish?). im a picky eater when it comes to eating something foreign. my waiter was extremely helpful in my order decision. but i decided to stick with something familiar, but still however had the celtic twist to it. i had a burger. but not just any burger. it was thick and juicy, with mushrooms, and onion and an EGG! definitely truely unique. when i bit into it was amazing!! it was soo good that i asked to speak to the person that made my burger. he came out and shook my hand and i congratulated him on the best NEW food ive ever tasted! will i go back? a million times yes! and who knows? i may just venture off into the world of unknown cousine! :) read more

By far the best meal I had while I was in Lake Charles. The Seafood Cakes and Fried Green Tomatoes was a phenomenal treat. The wait staff was attentive and extremely friendly. This is definitely on my list of places to return to. read more

Went for lunch, wasn't busy at all. Scottish eggs were yum. Huge portion size of fish and chips. While their chips were good, in ireland "chips" are fries! I wanted fries to pour malt vinegar over. Most of my party ordered stuff that was not irish for sure. I hear their bread pudding is really good, need to try it. read more

Great Irish-themed pub. Awesome beer selection, and the food has always been delicious. They are a little slow on service, but they're friendly. If you're in a rush, this probably isn't where you need to stop, but if you looking to sit with friends for a while to enjoy a beer and some fun atmosphere, you'll love it. read more

Waited 10 minutes before anyone offered to get our drink order. Took another 10 minutes to get the drinks and after being offered water no water came. Ordered an appetizer which never did make it. We were offered the wrong appetizer and a random side. The person serving it asked for our table number. Am I really supposed to know that information? My original order was apparently out of stock. The food was really good and the drinks were fabulous. The service was awful. Waited 10 minutes after receiving our check and no one showed up to take our bill. No one came by period so we threw down cash and left. Severely disappointed because the the reviews were so good and the food was good. read more

Really enjoy this place, have been here a few times and have to say it is a great place to sit and chill and have a beer.

My husband and I found this place while heading home from New Orleans. What a great place! We had the pickles and peppers which were absolutely delicious. The battery was light and flavorful. The pickles were nice and sour and the peppers had a little bite in a few but nothing bad at all. I welcomed the ones with seeds personally. We then split a Macfarlane burger-yummmmyyyyy! The burger was juicy and extremely flavorful. I would highly recommend getting the sourdough bun and smoked Gouda cheese on it. The sweet potato Fries were crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. We practically had to roll ourselves out of there. Great experience and great food! read more

Wish I could give negative stars. Very disappointed. I went in very excited to try a drink my friend had recommended and when my husband and I got there the waitress Sarah, barley looked at us and told us to find our own table. First we sat outside and she walked past but didn't seem to see us. Then we decided to go inside away from the smoke and after a little she can to drop off our menus. I literally had to stop her from running away from the table after that to order my drink and a bowl of soup. She did deliver those quickly but then never came back. NEVER! We sat there for over 30 minutes and she never once checked on us. My husband said he even caught her eye a few times and she still didn't return. I finally got so mad I wanted to leave so we went to the bar to pay so we could get out of there. She didn't ask why we just suddenly got up to leave or ask how we were. Just got the check and that was it. I was beyond upset and can't believe a person who works for tips in a customer service job could be that awful at her job. read more

I had an irredeemably bad experience. I had a party of five happily eating and drinking until the manager sent my server home. Suddenly, I couldn't get anyone to clear dishes, refill drinks, or take our order. The manager proceeded to walk away from me twice when I tried to complain, and go as far to call me childish for having a complaint. My wife and I are retired and travel the US, and we always seek out Irish pubs. The best I can say about MacFarlane's is that their decor is nice. The bad? We were there for 90 minutes and not once did we see any of the 10+ servers smile. Not ONCE! As my wife said, "they all look like they hate their jobs and can't wait to leave". Horrible customer service. Another issue? Charging double the normal cost of a beer for a 12oz. draft. The only time this place would make sense to visit is during happy hour, and then the prices are still too high for a small glass. Also, my wife ordered a Stone IPA. It took 17 minutes for them to pour it! The bartender claimed Stone IPA always pours badly. We have a lot of experience with Stone IPA at other bars, and no, it doesn't pour badly. Their beer lines have a problem and they won't admit it. And if it takes that long to pour a beer (besides a Guinness), then don't serve it. Last but not least, there is no sign outside to tell you you're at MacFarlane's! We won't be back. There are so many other, better, places out there. read more

Went in on a Friday night and the place was busy - which was to be expected. Ordered a cider and a Guinness at the bar for the wife and myself . The busboy took our name down for the wait and the bartender was friendly. Once seated we were ignored for 45 minutes by the waitresses while they seated new patrons, took their orders, asking others if refills were wanted and idly chatted with their friends as they came through the door. I unsuccessfully tried several times to flag a passing waitress to take our orders. As our drinks ran dry, a waitress snatched our menus from the table as she passed. As we rose to depart, the waitresses who were standing together ignoring us all evening smiled at us???. For what reason, I don't know. It was as if we were wearing a mark or needed some secret hand shake and code word to get service. I am left puzzled and offended by the service at this restaurant. In the end, after 45 mintues of waiting I have no idea if the food is any good or even worth the wait and rude service. read more

Although the food is good and there is a great selection of beers, I would not go back. I have been here several times and the last three times the service has been terrible. They have upped the prices on the beers and have not updated the menu prices. When you are surprised by the ticket, they act like it is a HUGE inconvenience to change the price to what you thought you were going to have to pay. Also, the last two times I have went for a particular dish, they were out of one of the main ingredients... The said ingredient was chicken!! We were not notified until after we ordered. The waitresses are usually not pleasant. The last waitress we had split the ticked wrong and ran the wrong debit cards to each, and refused to fix it.... So two of our party members had to pay for eachother's meals, and the difference in the bill was not small. I would not recommend going back here simply for the service and general attitude of the owners. read more
