I could see why people don't like this place, but I must admit that I liked my meal. The inside is rather dated and the service was iffy at best. And price wise, yeah this place is pretty expensive. Out on the water front, the restaurant was suggested the night before my change of command so we could have the outgoing, incoming, and brigade commander together. Needless to say, since the restaurant was well worth it. Plenty of fresh seafood, beer specials, and if you got tired of staring at each other, plenty of water to stare out at. The better part is that the porch faces east so you can be there for the sunset and not get a blaze of sunlight into your face. Oh - as for a recommendation, get the crab hushpuppies. We stopped in on our way to Washington DC. The location is great. What a cute town! The staff was very welcoming and accommodating. The food was good, prices reasonable. Dining the way it should never be. We went to MacGregor's for burger night. Server takes our order for 2 medium rare burgers. He was disappointed that we were not ordering more. Once our burgers arrived we had to ask for our setup since he never brought napkins & silverware at the outset. This guy made every effort not to be attentive to us. Never asked how our food was or pay even a modicum of attention to us. Our food was okay, and would have been much better if the burgers had not been cooked well-done. When it came time for the check the friggin guy would not make eye contact. We had to ask another server to get our server so we could get our check. Then we waited 15 more minutes in order to pay (with this guy still avoiding eye contact) before we had to go and find the manager. Explained to the manager that this server was either "a passive aggressive puke or poorly trained, your choice". She offered to comp our meal which we declined since we were not looking for Free Food. We paid the full check & tipped the server 20%. P.S. It was not busy either. read more

Given a one star because the fish dish I took two bites of was good. However, this is the third AND LAST time we will eat here. They are either hiring wait staff who are stupid or on drugs. I'd like to think it's the latter, because at least if they stop using drugs their performance might improve. Today, the waiter completely ignored what we ordered (wanted something grilled, not blackened), and despite the mistake, said to my husband, "well, don't you at least want to try it?" As if it were our fault he ordered it wrong. As well, he brought our appetizer out with our meal, saying, "well, I thought you wanted them together. " When my husband said he didn't want anything else and would "watch her eat," the waiter said, "Ok, enjoy!" Long time customer here. I hope Dan Lee reads this. Visited on a Friday night at 6pm. Was slightly shocked that the place wasn't crowded, at all. Maybe 15% of the tables filled. It did fill up about an hour later, but no where near what I've seen over the past 20+ years. We were seated promptly. Our waiter, while nice, looked unkempt. The nose piercings didn't help. Some other servers looked the same, while others looked very professional. My wife and I ordered crab soup for appetizers. Mine was cream of crab and was excellent. Perfect taste, and had plenty of crab meat in it. My wife's, quite the opposite. The tomato base was over powering and acidic, and we couldn't find any crab meat in her soup. I also order a Caesar salad. It was drenched in dressing. So much so, it was not enjoyable. The dressing over powered the whole thing. We ended up sharing the crab cake dinner. While the menu stated it came with some sort of carrot based side, that was not present. Everything else was very good. The crab cakes had plenty of meat, actually, they could have used a little more filler to keep them together. It just looked like broiled crab meat placed on top of the sides, but nothing holding the crab cakes together. The asparagus was cooked and spiced perfectly and the mashed potatoes were very tasty. Asked for a high chair immediately, after 15 minutes finally received. At least 6 waiters went by the table, offered no service for 20 minutes. In the meantime had to go to desk and get own menus. After ordering entrees, 3 salads, order of crab crab cakes, side order of fries, the order came 55 minutes later and the fries were hardly warm. Delish. The scallops weren't as colored as I like them. The shrimp and flounder were cooked well, the veggies tasty and the garlic mashed potatoes were AWESSSSSSSSSOME. My friend ordered their Chicken Chesapeake - no complaints. The crab imperial was a little on the lemony side but didn't take away from the orgasmic-ness of it. One of our favorite restaurants in the area. It has a very local bar in one half and a pretty nice dining room in the other as well as a massive deck bar/dining room in the summer. The dining room oversees the Susquehanna river's entry into the Chesapeake bay; every table has a view. The food is extremely good, obviously cooked with passion. I've had just about everything on their menu and I still have a hard time deciding. Service is generally very good, but we've achieved regular status and always get our favorite server. Also, we never go during the summer months when the whole town is overrun with tourists. -------Update 2014-------------------- I have to take away a couple of stars from what used to be my favorite restaurant. I can't say enough about this place. This restaurant is a staple in the area for good seafood. While visiting MD this weekend we had a group dinner here and everything was fantastic. Everyone had some kind of seafood dish, my Dad had a steak with some bleu cheese on it. We noted how it got really quiet after the dinner was served..everyone was too busy eating to talk! The soups here are very good - I had the cream of crab soup, while others raved about the french onion soup. The service was excellent! The staff was just the "right kind" of attentive - not too much, but not too little either. Both times I have eaten here I have sat in the bar section and each time I have left pleased but somewhat unfulfilled. The atmosphere is fairly nice and has a combination of bar/ tourist restaurant feel. The service was slightly slower than most places but friendly and knowledgeable. On to the food, the crab pretzel is pretty darn good and not something I even knew existed until I came to Maryland. The menu has a decent selection and the food has always been good. Nothing I've ordered has ever blown me away after I ate it. I guess the main issue is that it seems overpriced for what it is. They have borderline upscale prices at a pretty basic restaurant. Maybe it's the water location but I would probably go 4 stars if I didn't feel like I was getting jipped. read more

Worst place to eat. Had a terrible experience a while back with the food and service, but tried them again.....What a mistake that was. First we had to waive down a server to get a drink. Waive them down again to take our food order. Then, half the food was delivered cold to our table. When they brought the main course, the order was wrong and they had to submit another order to the cook. The waiter advised the mis- ordered meal would be free since they messed up the order, but when the bill arrived, the manager said to charge us. Not how to get customers. Try another place, but don't make the same mistake we did. The manager there really doesn't care too much about customers and how to treat them. read more

Went for dinner during Havre de Grace first Friday in June, waited about an hour and a half for food that wasn't even very good in the end, and a few of the people in our group got sick. We heard a rumor that there was a wedding rehearsal dinner that evening, so it's understandable that the kitchen staff was overtaxed, but why would you schedule that sort of thing on what is probably the restaurant's busiest night of the year? Fun venue. We were hosting a wedding at nearby Vandiver Inn which ended at 9pm. We contacted MacGregor's a month ahead of time and said we were bringing about 30 people down to the bar. They were ready for us. Some stayed outside on the back porch with the band, others stayed inside for a quieter atmosphere. Their staff was efficient and accommodating. We like Mac Gregors. They have good prices, a nice atmosphere and the staff is pleasant. My wife and I said we wanted to split the rockfish. The waiter asked we would like that on two plates. This restaurant is open 365 days of the year. I have always had a great meal here with plenty of food, great desserts, and very courteous staff. When the weather is warm, one can sit outside and view the Susquehanna River. There is a lot of great artwork in the main dining room to admire. The upstairs of the building is a banquet room with plenty of space and a great view of the river and the beginning of the Chesapeake Bay. Eaten here many times and the specials were always pretty good. However, after our $120 lunch today I feel compelled to say that this place is not the same. The server was very nice, could have been more attentive but got busy so I understand, and did a good job. The food, however, was both terrible and meh. The cream of crab soup and crab cake with salad was ok. Both came out hot and the salad was fresh and portion sizes were good. The Maryland crab soup came out cold and after being sent back, nuked and returned, tasted like couple day old bland vegetable broth. The French onion soup came out very hot, however, the soup was beef broth with rubbery beef cubes at the bottom. Had it been actual onion soup I'm sure it would have been great and would not have been returned. The kids sliders were dry and over-cooked but the fries were delicious. The regular cheese burger was half eaten before a long hair was found in the patty and had to be returned uneaten. We were there for an hour and a half as it got fairly busy. I don't normally leave negative reviews but considering how much we paid for lunch I'm very disappointed in how poorly the food was presented and turned out. I'd consider waiting until they get a little better before eating here. If you do go, stick with the Cream if crab and crab cakes, which is the only reason I gave 2 stars. Also, the manager never checked on the complaints after letting the waiter know about several things. read more

I was here with a party of about 8 people and we sat outside on the covered deck with the band. The waitress was super nice and very friendly. The food was a nightmare. I chose the crab imperial stuffed flounder. Looking back now, I guess I should have inquired as to what constitutes their "fluffy imperial sauce" as stated on their menu. I almost gagged as it was some sort of dijon mustard sauce. I hate mustard and figured crab imperial would be safe. I had to scrape the topping off and of course couldn't really get the flavor out of my head while eating the small portion that was very much lacking any substantial crab. The baked potato may have been day-old as it was hard and dried out. The vegetable of the day seemed to be from a can and any taste or nutrients it may have had were totally stripped from it. Other folks were also displeased with their meals and found them to be lackluster and nothing special. Crabcakes that were small and tasted no better than frozen? Really? The beer was cold at least, but served in plastic cups - I hate that if I'm paying $6.00 for a beer! After dining, I went up to the bar that had relatively NOBODY around it, and the two young female bartenders were busy playing and chatting with a few boys at the other end and ignored me standing there for nearly 5 minutes. The sun was shining, our bellies were rumbling....time to trek to Havre de Grace for a date featuring some great outdoor seating! We decided on MacGregor's because seafood sounded good, and their prices were more desirable than Tidewater Grille's. THE FOOD (3 Stars) We split the lunch crabcake sandwich as an appetizer. The sandwich didn't taste bad, nor did it taste great. Meaty, but underseasoned. Other descriptors that come to mind: blah, lackluster, nothing to write home about. My husband got the salmon BLT. Good not great. The salmon, I'd have to say, was perfectly done! But like the crabcake, it was a touch underseasoned. The bacon and aioli were nice complements. My swordfish BLT was probably a 2-star meal. The swordfish tried hard to taste cajun-y, but fell flat. Once again, bland is the overall theme of the meal. The fries were delicious! The right combination of salty/crispy/soft. THE ATMOSPHERE (4 stars) We sat on the deck with great views of the water. We propped open the umbrella to avoid the sun beating down directly. We were in the mood for outdoor seating, and this place delivered. The deck was clean, and as it was a Monday afternoon, we shared the space with only two other tables. Very pleasant! SERVICE (5 stars) *Drumroll please* ....... Introducing Trey, one of the best and loveliest waiters ever. Trey is the reason this place gets 5 stars for service. He was willing to provide excellent customer service by going above and beyond to make sure I was happy. I inquired about the ingredients in a blood orange bellini (champagne, yes, but what else?) He politely said he was unsure, but would ask the bartender. He came back with the bottle of blood orange concentrate so I could have the best idea of what was in the drink. I opted to get it. When I received it, I hated it. He must be intuitive, because a minute after my first sip, he came to the table and said, "ma'am, please know that if the drink is not to your liking I would be more than happy to bring you something else" (perhaps he saw my grimace from afar). I took him up on his offer and was touched by his consideration for my preferences. Throughout the meal he continued to provide great service and was attentive to our needs. Yay, Trey. Overall: 4 stars. The food isn't spectacular, but the experience was lovely. Next time, I'll aim to try a full seafood entree as opposed to a sandwich off the lunch menu. read more

MacGregor's has been my favorite restaurant for many years. I'm not a seafood fan but usually ordered a signature dish, Harbor of Mercy. Sea bass has been substituted for rockfish in this dish; why, the server didn't know. Never will order this again; bass was strong and gummy. I question whether the black and blue pork chops were really pork chops or cuts off a pork roast. It was OK. The menu listed house-made risotto/ sauteed spinach as sides. The risotto was not very flavorful, and the spinach was incorporated into the risotto, not a separate side. We had to ask for bread; butter provided was 2 tiny packets. I don't often order alcoholic drinks other than wine, but since it was Happy Hour, I decided to order a frozen Pina Colada. Our server told us it would not be Happy Hour prices if we ordered at our table, even though we were seated at the outside deck. So my husband went to the outside bar to order. Pina Coladas were not included in Happy Hour pricing. Nowhere on the advertisement did it exempt them, only "Premium Domestics" were not included in Happy Hour on the advertisement. We left saying this was the last time we'd be dining here. Expect a lot better for the prices they charge. Should have read the reviews before we went. read more
