My fiancé & I are visiting from Texas & decided to stop here for a quick bite based on the reviews. The service is excellent & everyone is super nice! The bathrooms were very clean; they are also covered in Spanish comic strips which I thought was so unique! The only reason for the lack of a star is the drinks/food. We had a paloma & a machete margarita, served with WAY too much ice. My paloma was a little flat because it didn't have any soda in it so my fiancé finished it for me. The food options are a plenty with mostly taco options a la cart. We started with the salsa and chips flight, some really great flavors! I had the quesabirria taco which was most excellent, it was even served with a tiny consumé jug. Only note there was my plate being so small. I understand they're smaller size tacos but a full plate would have been nice for the toppings that will eventually fall out. Other tacos ordered were the al pastor and camaron tacos. Al pastor comes with pineapple so the flavor was a little different, camaron taco is served on a squid ink tortilla which is BLACK and also so cool. I politely asked the MOD to turn the music down because I didn't want to yell to the person sitting next to me. My apple phone also confirmed dangerous sound levels. The MOD was threatening and frankly he was down right rude. MOD "is this you first time here eating here? No why would that matter? MOD "You are the only one here complaining about the music level so why should I turn it down" I was shocked. All he needed to do was turn the volume down a little. He could not handle this. Very nice hostesses and an awesome waiter made this a great dining experience, but the food made it wonderful. Vegan, gluten free tacos for my wife and a carnivores menagerie for me. The salsa is yummy and the drinks are large and strong, no complaints there. The not so good is the food, which I always feel lacks taste, it's bland and not full flavored. The Yelps really came through for us on this one, so thanks to all you pioneers of tacos and tequila for pointing us in the right direction. We called a last minute audible on our lunch plans, and due to the incredible weather, decided to eat out instead of order in. We took the stroll to Machete and found it as advertised: sorta down the stairs, but flagged by awnings over the windows. We descended, went to the front where the hostess was, and asked to sit out on the patio. It was a patio, and it was February. Mid-February. That's just plain ridiculous, in the best possible way. If you can sit on the patio (winter or not) you should give it a go, as you're isolated from the street in that sunken area and you have your own little world. We ordered up a heap of guacamole, and chips & salsa. I was stoked on the four kinds of salsa they delivered to the table. None were too spicy, and they had some unique flavor; one creamy, one smokey, and so on. Tacos here aren't the cheapest, but comparitive to other spots, spending $3.50-5.00 isn't too bad. I grabbed a trio: lengua, lobster, and the beef/chorizo/cheese combo. I gotta say, the lobster was the weakest link. It was tasty but the other two were really good and the lobster didn't knock my socks off. But don't let me discourage you from getting it, it's still a nice dish. Tequila? Yep. I don't imbibe, but there was a round of margaritas all around. The spicy one seemed like the preference, but I can't report on taste. As a cute final touch, we got a little plate of small cookies which gave just the right amount of sweet finish to the lunch. We breezed back up the stairs and back out to the streets of Cherry Creek. The food at Machete never disappoints but the service really depends on who you get. I've been there four times now and this most recent visit, the server seemed to want to charge extra for everything that we had always gotten free in the past. The charges weren't a lot ($.50 each for salsa refills) but it's just annoying enough to make me complain. Our last server even brought us containers of salsa to go (at no extra charge) and a little box of those awesome cookies they give you with the check.
