It doesn't look like much when you drive in. The place needs some paint at least but try the food. We go to the drive thru but are never able to find the microphone so we just drive up to the window and order. The lady in drive thru is very nice. Shes always happy to take our order. I came for the first time through the drive thru. I stared at the menu and a voice came through the menu in Spanish. I told her I didn't understand and if she could repeat herself. It was silent for 2-3 minutes so I decided to go to the window. The gentleman there was very kind and took my order, the food was good but the girl left a sour taste. Here we go, I really wanted to like this place. The good news is that I did like it the bad news is I wasn't overwhelmed. On a scale from 1 to 10 I have to say it's about a 6. My family has been coming here for so many years and it's incredible how consistent the food still is!! The chicken is so good with the onions and jalapeños. They're rice and beans are perfection. Omg the salsas.... I look forward to left overs of the Chile de árbol and green salsas cause they are so good. We always take the chicken to go so I can't speak as to the restaurant's dine-in experience. However, I can attest that this place is the real deal. The chicken, sides, and salsas are all delicious and fresh. The chicken is always cooked to perfection and is seasoned just right. What I mean by that is that it does not overpower the sides or the salsas so everything works well together. It comes with grilled onions and chilies. The rice and beans are both good, but the stand out for me are definitely the beans. They taste homemade for sure. All three of their salsas are good. I really like the green and the red one (the darker of the two reds). They are great together - at least that's how I eat them. My dad is the person who always picks up and he says that the owners always offer those waiting complementary beans and chips. Macho Pollo is definitely worth a try. read more

At first walking in it looks very old and a bit run down. Doesn't matter because it smells good. I dined in alone. Friendly cashier and cook. I ordered the half chicken with rice and beans. I also got a side order of tortilla chips topped with some beans that was part of my plate special. I grabbed all 3 salsas to try them all. Green was definitely my favorite. I topped my tortilla chips with it. I noticed it had chunks of tomatillo, yum. Kinda wanted to ask for a to go cup of it hah. The chicken was good but what made it stand out was the skin. I usually don't eat the skin on most chicken. Don't care for it but I'll try a bit of it either way. Been coming here for a few years, it's hands down the best bang for your buck, it's something perfect for a lazy sunday that a family of 4 could eat and def enjoy for under $30. Mind you if you go to a fast food place in Pomona don't expect gourmet, for what it is it's fantastic. Well seasoned (not super overpowering or over salted like other places, never super dry)Large enough sides, corn tortillas and the cashiers pretty chill and the service is pretty quick. I leave it 5 stars because I've read the disappointing 3 star reviews over things that don't make a difference. This place has a fucking weird vibe. The interior is ugly and outdated. But that's not the point. This is hands down the best chicken I've had. It's more flavorful then any other place. And the beans feel home made not just out of some can. The Asian lady working there is very kind and speaks Spanish almost flawlessly! One other gripe is the price. The refried beans with sprinkle of melted cheese is also a winner, having a more buttery taste that goes well with the chicken. The plate comes with Spanish rice that is tasty as well, corn tortillas, avocado slices, long slices of grilled onions, and a jalapeño pepper cut length-wise and grilled. This is my favorite plate at Macho Pollo. Rating: 5/5. CARNE ASADA BURRITO: Priced under $6 (including tax). Melody of well-seasoned carne asada, Spanish rice, refried beans, and grilled onions. Add their in-house tomatillo salsa for a more flavorful experience. Rating: 4/5. CARNE ASADA COMBINATION PLATE: Priced under $11 (including tax). As noted above, each item is well seasoned with the refried beans covered with a dash melted cheese standing out. Same accoutrements accompany this combo plate as they did in the chicken breast plate. Rating: 4/5. 3 TACOS COMBINATION PLATE: Priced just under $8 (including tax). I ordered each taco with a different meat. Each taco comes with a slice of avocado on top of the meat, while the grilled jalapeño and onions are served alongside. -Buche: the meat was chewy, not fresh by any means. -Carne Asada: dry with little flavor. -Al Pastor: the worst of the lot, it was bone dry and could pass as beef jerky. Finding the location is easy because you can't miss the big orange and white building on the north side of Holt, just west of East End. I am heading back there today to pick up chicken, rice, beans, tortillas, salsa, grilled onions and jalapenos for the fourth consecutive Super Bowl party in a row. It's been such a success in past years that my friends have made Macho Pollo a foregone conclusion and insist on me picking it up to help us celebrate the Big Game. We used to barbecue, now we spend more time together watching the game. This will be the main meal for a party of 15. To be honest, the outside looks terrible and very unattractive. But don't be fooled by its outside appearance! I went today around 3:00pm and ordered the Half Chicken Plate ($7.99). It came with Mexican rice, beans with cheese on top, half a chicken, 3 slices of avocado, grilled onions, a grilled jalepeño, and 4 warm corn tortillas on the side. If I based my review of this place off of my first experience alone, Macho Pollo would get five stars, hands down. My co-worker made the Macho Pollo run and brought me a carne asada burrito and a side of salsa. It was love at first bite. The tortilla was fresh and, although thin, sturdy enough to stand up to a giant burrito stuffed with delicious carne asada, tender rice and tons of beans. The tortilla actually took me back to my great-grandma's kitchen at home in San Diego; she used to make all of her tortillas by hand and it was almost like she made that one just for me. The burrito was huge and despite the food baby that ensued, I ate it all. The salsa made me sweat, which is pretty much my family's indicator for whether or not salsa is worthwhile. It certainly isn't ladylike, but if it doesn't make me sweat, it's not worth it. Sooooo delicious. The second time, my co-workers and I actually went for a sit-down lunch. There's an interesting ambiance in there, and by "interesting," I mean there is none. We sat within 10 feet of an obviously broken industrial stove, an unidentifiable trash can and (I think) a pinball machine. The interior of this place is painted the obnoxious royal blue and Corvette yellow of my rival high school, and our booths were classic 80s: mauve and sticky. I ordered the three taco combo plate. While the food was plentiful yet again, the cook either forgot about my chicken on the grill, or (worse), he grilled up some leftover chicken. It was dry, crispy and tasteless. I would have been better off buying popcorn chicken from KFC and using that to make my tacos. As I told my co-workers, I was really glad that my first impression of Macho Pollo came from that incredible burrito and not those lousy tacos. Next time, I'll take a burrito... to go. read more
