Macho's just opened a couple of days ago in the spot where Tacos El Paisa used to be. There has been a bit of turnover on that corner of Cass and Grand so we'll see how this place fares. I stopped by for breakfast after driving past and noticed they were open. Not much has changed inside as it looked it even more plain than before. The menu had all the standard items you would expect to find at a local taco shop. I did notice they don't make their own tortillas as there were bags of pre-purchased ones on the service counter. Since it was still morning, I settled for a sausage breakfast burrito ($5.29). It was reasonably large in size for the price. I picked up some mild salsa from the bar in the middle of the dining room to give the burrito some additional flavoring. I would rate Macho's as a middle of the road Mexican joint as nothing really stood out for better or worse. read more

Best non-touristy street taco shop in PB! The al pastor is roasted on a schwarma-style vertical broiler, the street tacos are loaded with guac, there's an all you can eat chips and salsa bar, and the best creamy chipotle sauce around. Went to check out Machos last night since they're the new shop in town. The Mexican restaurants in San Diego is super saturated as it is. I ordered the shrimp ceviche tostada. You can already tell that the shrimp has been cooked in lime for quite sometime or they bought the cooked shrimp. Not how i like my shrimp ceviches. The nice thing about Machos is they have a chip and salsa bar with hot carrots, grilled onions, mango salsa, and more. This is one of my go-to burrito spots for a quick bite. Their protein burrito is great. Chicken, cheese, avocado, black beans, spinach, and sauce on a whole wheat tortilla. Tastes great following a workout and has healthier ingredients than your average burrito. I also love their California burrito. I usually ask for it on a wheat tortilla, but their cheese and and steak is solid. Their parking lot is kinda tight so I wish there was more space to park, but the drive-through is pretty quick. Tacos were authentic!!! The salsa bar is prepared fresh. And the meal comes with complimentary chips. The street tacos run for about 2.25. My personal favorite was the pollo one the meat was seasoned excellently. The location is prime because it is walking distance from the beach! But the restrooms is outside the establishment and it is DISGUSTING. So go eat on an empty bladder or face it's fury. read more

Came here to check out a new place in the neighborhood. Breakfast burrito is laughable. Scrambled eggs and fresh tortilla are about the only thing it has going for it. Full slices of bacon which I guess isn't exactly bad but you couldn't even put the effort in the cut the pieces up? The horrible part is the processed potatoes patties (like McDonalds) that they add in there and the whole Jimmy Dean like sausage links. Need to start by saying my experience was for the drive through. Even though there was only one car in front of me and no one in the restaurant the food took far too long. I ordered a carne Asada burrito. Below average. The tortilla was doughy, the guacamole was watered down and there was very little salsa. The meat was a good flavor although quite grisly. Macho's is a nice Mexican food place in the heart of PB. I ordered a quesadilla. Everything was fine. Here is why I can only give one star and I won't return. I used the bathroom. I have never seen such an unsanitary upsetting restroom in my life. And in PB yet. Purple. Graffiti everywhere. it looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a month. Really a bad situation. It just amazes how such a lack of quality is proudly presented in a saturated market (taco shops in San Diego) and expected to not go out of business. Really don't understand business owner's logic regarding places like this. In short, although they have a somewhat cool name and logo, Macho's is an extremely mediocre taco shop that utilizes store-bought bases for their dishes. Read on for specific details... To expand on this, as another reviewer said on here, they definitely do use store bought items, which will be the basis for this review. I experienced this ordering the carne asada chips/nachos, as they were without a doubt the worst I've ever had from a taco shop here in San Diego, which is saying a lot when you consider that saturated market I mentioned. The chips themselves being the clearly store bought item in this dish. I can only speculate for the rest of the dish, but the chips were literally those off-brand Tostitos type tortilla chips that were so low quality they instantly became soggy and all broke under the weight of the minuscule amount of toppings I received, not to mention their tastelessness. Needles to say, when you have your heart set on carne asada chips, you're probably craving something crunchy, right? Otherwise you'd probably go with fries, or a burrito, or whatever... I don't know your life. But the point is, the chips are an important part of the dish; they are the base after all, and there's no excuse for pathetic attempts like this one when basically every other taco shop makes authentic ones in house that hold up to toppings and of course taste 1000x better. In regards to toppings, both the red and green salsas were watery and thus, virtually tasteless. Guacamole was non-remarkable, and the sour cream and cheese were fine (I'd imagine store bought dairy would be hard to mess up), but both used very sparingly. The carne asada, an equally important part of this dish as the chips, was also bad. The only good thing I can say about it is that it wasn't dry or overly salty, but it didn't have a single taste of char/grill to it which was very indicative of it just being pre-boiled in bulk then put in a heating container in an assembly line. Maybe they forgot to grill it? Maybe this gringo wouldn't notice soggy carne asada? No sé. Speaking of assembly, you guessed it: also bad. Not to mention the wait, but the toppings were all thrown on top of the chips, leaving all of the ones underneath as dry as Captain America's dick in the Winter Soldier. Even the Styrofoam container they were served in was wrong; it was the small type and had side dish spots for rice, beans, etc., which just leaves less space for food when you're ordering something like this. In conclusion, obviously quality goes out the window in utilizing store-bought items, and it doesn't even make sense from a business standpoint, as it's likely more expensive than just making the items in house yourself. The price for these chips at just under $10 is in the same territory as the super nachos at Vallarta, which are light years ahead of this place. Don't support laziness. read more

Why such low reviews? This is a run of the mill Mexican joint but with a full decked out salsa bar and free chips. You know what you're getting into if you're expecting your stomach not to hurt a little after a burrito. They have friendly cashiers, a large space and like 6 different kinds of salsas.
