I am a huge fan of all of the Cohn restaurants. Coasterra is one of the only ones in San Diego that I had never experienced until now. So I was very excited to see what this place had to offer. Celebrated my daughter's 19th birthday here this week, and to be honest, I was not impressed. The location and views from this place are unmatched. Tons of covered patio seating with a breathtaking view of the downtown skyline. As for the food, it was just ok. It was mostly mexican seafood, but there was a good mix of other items like steak and a wagu burger. Everything was served hot and fresh, but in my honest opinion, everything just lacked flavor. Everything I tasted was just bland, and I tasted a little bit of all of my family's meals. But everyone agreed. Maybe we are just spoiled with San Diego Mexican food. My biggest complaint of the night was the service. Our waiter started off well. He took our drink orders and when he returned, asked if we wanted to get appetizers started, which we did. Our appetizers came out and were finished and we still had not seen our server to order our main dinner. This continued to be the issue all night, we were constantly looking and waiting for our server. There were other servers that came around and filled our drinks and took our plates, and they were great! But we really didn't see our main server most of the night. And one of the times that we did walk by, my daughter asked for a new glass of water because she had dropped food into the glass. He took the glass and never came back. I ended up giving my daughter my water. I did notice that the servers at the other tables were awesome. They were attentive, and we constantly saw them checking on their guest. And like I said, we are fans of all of the Cohn restaurants we have dined at before, so the level of service we received is not typical. Maybe our server was new??? I will say, this is not a cheap place to eat. My family of 5 spent almost $240 and that was with no alcohol or desserts. So you would expect to receive a high level of service. Other than the ambience, our experience was just ok. You get to take in San Diego's night views from a unique vantage point, and the scenery is breathtaking. Boasting unbeatable ocean views, the restaurant faces straight toward the downtown skyline and the Coronado Bridge. Sunset hour offers incredible photo opportunities. It features a huge outdoor terrace with fire pits and refreshing ocean breezes, making it perfect for watching sunsets, snapping photos, or romantic dates. The weather wasn't ideal the day I went, and I arrived a little late, so I missed the sunset glow, but I still had an amazing experience overall. The menu centers on modern Mexican cuisine and fresh seafood. Must-orders include table-side guacamole made fresh right at your table, ceviche and aguachile with ultra-fresh seafood, fish and shrimp tacos, as well as Mexican paella meant to share for two. Their fried cauliflower appetizer was also outstanding! The bill came out to around $55 per person, and it's totally worth the price given the stunning surroundings. So the second time around, I would have to say this was a much better experience. I did go during lunch and not dinner. Our server David was super attentive and welcoming. He kept checking in on our food and we did hit a hiccup which was we put in the order for the kids first, but it didn't come till much after our adult entrées came so again I would say the consistency still need some growth but overall it was much better than my last time. You can see the picture where our food wise and we waited for about 12 minutes until the kids food came. I will give the extra Star because of David and the service that he provided checking in on us refilling our water. He was very attentive and very kind This time we did try some new dishes like the mahi tacos, which were good, but the fish was a little tough. Delicious food, great view, and wonderful hospitality! On our last evening in San Diego, we went to Coasterra to wrap up our vacation there. This restaurant came highly recommended by major Visit San Diego websites, and we felt we should give it a try. Located right next to the water, the restaurant offers expansive view of the harbor and the San Diego skyline. Sitting is about 50/50 indoor vs. outdoor, and we chose the indoor sitting as it tended to get colder in the evening. Parking is available out front, but we took Lyft there. We came in around Happy Hour, and we were able to score two appetizers for $11 each. We got fried calamari and fish cervice as appetizers. For entree, we had the fish tacos and scallops. Both of the appetizers were excellent, and the cervice was so light and flavorful. My husband loved his scallop entree, and the taste and presentation were original and outstanding. My fish taco was enjoyable as well. For dessert, we had fresh churro that was paired with ice cream, which was excellent as well. Our meal came to $143 with taxes, which was a very good value with the quality and services offered. Our waiter was attentive and friendly, which made us felt right at home. Enjoyed the different flavors of ceviche and was a fan of the super crispiness of calamari. My fav was the ahi tuna tostada. We sat at the bar for a bit and the bartender was so attentive! genuinely friendly, and every drink he made was spot on. We decided to start with an appetizer at the bar We ordered the fish ceviche, which was sooo goood and super fresh and full of flavor. And they do not hold back on the tortilla chips... seriously, it's a whole boatload!! When our main entrées came out, I was a little surprised. My dish ended up being smaller than I expected, and it came with white rice (I had swapped the beans for mushrooms). It felt a bit under-seasoned, and I did have to ask for salt and pepper to bring it to life. On the other hand, my boyfriend ordered the Wagyu hamburger and said it was amazing!! the overall experience was still great. The comments do NOT reflect my server, as he was really good So I ventured here from Torrey Pines in the middle of rush hour (clearly a non-resident rookie mistake). The atmosphere is beautiful, nestled on the water, and downtown, you could not ask for a better view. The chips and salsa were good. I wish they had refilled my salsa. The appetizer: This was a total miss. I usually can eat it, but the lack of flavor and depth was disappointing. The main entrée was painful. The chicken was so dry and under-seasoned that it was hard to eat. I had to get extra sauce, which was more oily than expected. The lemon added good acidity to the chicken, but they should use thighs if they are cooking it for that long. I will say the skin was nice and crispy, and the food was actually hot. The espresso martini was a bit underwhelming since it tasted like cold brew, but again, it wasn't terrible, and it didn't blow me away. The churros were AMAZING!!!!!! What a Beautiful spot to enjoy lunch after arriving in San Diego. Stopped here right after flying in as I was starving and we were ready to start our vacation. We enjoyed some cocktails and share some appetizers and a salad. The corn pudding was a little dry but had good flavor I'm just used to it being much more moist like a pudding vs a corn bread. The guac was delicious although I could use more heat and cilantro but that's a personal preference. The salad was excellent the shrimp was cooked perfectly and all the flavors worked well together. My husband wanted to try the short rib enchiladas, as he saw it on a yelp post, but when we inquired with our waiter he said it hasn't been on the menu for the past 4 years which I found strange, that someone just posted about it a month ago..... I order the mahi taco that came with rice and beans. The rice tasted way better than it looked. It was very flavorful! The beans also had great flavor too. The fish was nicely battered and fried with pico de gallo in a flour tortilla. My husband got the seafood enchiladas that also came with rice and beans. Kind and attentive, she was able to resolve a minor issue professionally and to our satisfaction. (What a way to showcase Southern California). Great for a lunch or dinner date. I personally like mid-week since it's less busy and we usually get the perfect table although the view is great wherever you are seated. We (my husband and I) always come back for the delicious coconut margarita, which you can even order by the pitcher. The rim is lined with toasted coconut, and it is so so good. The service is usually very good, which makes the experience even better. We also love ordering the Aquachile -- it is so fresh and citrusy with just the right amount of spice. My girlfriend made reservations for Mother's Day for an early dinner since her mom was in town. The hostess were friendly and led us to our seats. The gentleman/waiter handed us the menu and went on his way. Chips and salsa along with waters for the table were brought and then that was when the service of our waiter went downhill. We ordered the ahi tuna and guacamole for our appetizers but the timing for the meal was so off. It was a long wait before the waiter even checked back on us and which is when I asked for a refill on my water and chips. We had order drinks as well. The gaucamole portion was large and it wasn't until I asked another waiter did my refill of water and chips arrive. For entree, we got the scallops with corn cake, a salad and I had the poblano burger. I asked for the burger to be cooked to medium. When the entrees arrived my burger was overcooked with no pink in sight. The flavor of the burger was good but the burger was definitely dry as can be. The corn cake with scallop was interesting it was almost like the corn cake was a croquet that encased a corn salsa. Overall the food was okay but the service left a lot to be desired. The waiter and the end seemed to put up a fake act when the check came. Since we asked for the check it seemed like the waiter was on hyper speed. This restaurant has the best views of San Diego's bay front, their Christmas buffet brunch was loaded with flavor, and service was excellent! They had an extensive holiday menu, I ate literally everything on the menu, and there was not one thing that I didn't enjoy. I will definitely look to come back to try their regular menu. First off, the view is absolutely amazing! Overlooking the downtown San Diego high rise buildings. Just amazing. We got here at just before 5 pm and got seated immediately. They have heat lamps outside, so don't be afraid to sit outside even if you get cold easily. What really made the night was the service. Our server was extremely attentive and never let our water glass get less than half full. He saw that our chip basket had a lot of small pieces so he went to grab a new chip basket with fresh warm chips for us to enjoy. The chips and salsa were excellent. We ordered the steak and shrimp fajitas, as well as the mahi-mahi fish tacos. The tacos were great love the flavors and everything that came with it. The fajitas were good, but as I continued eating it, the sauce felt a little bit overwhelming, and subtracted from the enjoyment of the dish. Overall, the service and ambience was 10 out of 10. We were sat promptly since I had a reservation and the table had a "Happy Birthday" sign waiting for my girlfriend and I. I started off the night getting the Island Bird cocktail which tasted great and had tropical flavors to it. For my main course I ordered the Rainbow Trout with Elote rice and arugula salad. This was a last minute spot that I added to our weekend getaway. We were wrapping up a day at Sea World and was looking for a spot with great views and Mexican food. Coasterra sits right along the water, located across the bay from downtown San Diego. It's a little challenging to get an Uber out this way, but it's worth the effort. We stopped by for their happy hour menu, which was well worth it. The regular menu is a little pricey, but you can oder off the happy hour menu during the week from 3:30 to 5:30 PM. They have house wine at $11 each, which is quite a deal compared to the regular menu. I recommend getting a seat on the patio and getting advance reservation. We lucked out, and snagged one of the last spots outside. You're also not too far from Liberty Station, which is where we went after our light snacks and drinks. read more

We had reservations which I normally wouldn't make but my friend was smart because it was pretty busy for a mid day Monday! We were sat out in the patio with a gorgeous view of course. I've been here on two separate occasions. We tried their Valentine's three-course menu back in 2023 and just came back last week to try their Thanksgiving Day dinner buffet. Both experiences were wonderful - overall highly recommend Coasterra as a place to go and celebrate a special event/holiday. We had a great Valentine's meal back then which is why we chose to come back when shopping around for where to eat on Thanksgiving Day 2025. We opted for the $89.99 buffet. I was skeptical at first since my perception of buffets has changed since the pandemic, but I was actually pleased with the buffet service during dinner. All stations were well maintained and everything was refilled/replenished fairly frequently. I also enjoyed the variety of selections. I wish I came hungrier - I liked most items I tried (turkey, steak, salmon/rice, etc.) and wish I could come back for more rounds! The dessert station was also plentiful. The service both times were also great. As others have said, it is on the pricier side, but honestly a worth it experience for any celebrations or dates. One of the best parts of this place? The incredible view of Downtown San Diego. You are on the water and the ambiance makes dining here even more special. Parking is free self-parking, although I was initially told that it would be a required $10 valet on Thanksgiving (which ended up not happening). Love this Mexican American fusion spot! The ambiance is easily the star of the show. The restaurant sits right along the water, and the views alone make the visit worth it. Whether you're there for lunch with friends or a relaxed date night, the setting genuinely elevates the whole dining experience. The food was good though definitely on the pricier side. Portions are generous, so at least you feel like you're somewhat getting your money's worth. The menu leans into creative fusion without going overboard, and most dishes are familiar but with a twist. The mussels were crazy good. It's paired with a spicy chorizo broth that had so much depth and heat without being overwhelming. The bread that comes with it is also delightful. The staff were friendly, attentive, and genuinely warm. We discover a gem. Our server Case is a 10 star server in a 5 star rating system. The atmosphere was all of the 5 stars. The table side guacamole was all five stars. The main courses we ordered we not what our taste buds were looking for. The flan ( Yes, the flan ) was the best flan I have ever consumed. As dense as a cheese cake and coconut flavors of the islands. We lookd forward to giving the place another go because of the Service, the Atmosphere, and the guacamole.
