My girlfriend made reservations for Mother's Day for an early dinner since her mom was in town. The hostess were friendly and led us to our seats. The gentleman/waiter handed us the menu and went on his way. Chips and salsa along with waters for the table were brought and then that was when the service of our waiter went downhill. It was a long wait before the waiter even checked back on us and which is when I asked for a refill on my water and chips. We had order drinks as well. The smoked old fashion was good and the ahi tuna appetizer portion was plentiful. There were some parts of the diced ahi that was a bit chewy. The gaucamole portion was large and it wasn't until I asked another waiter did my refill of water and chips arrive. For entree, we got the scallops with corn cake, a salad and I had the poblano burger. I asked for the burger to be cooked to medium. When the entrees arrived my burger was overcooked with no pink in sight. The flavor of the burger was good but the burger was definitely dry as can be. The corn cake with scallop was interesting it was almost like the corn cake was a croquet that encased a corn salsa. Overall the food was okay but the service left a lot to be desired. Coasterra is one of our favorite spots in San Diego. The view across the water of the downtown San Diego skyline is absolutely stunning and makes the whole experience. (What a way to showcase Southern California). Great for a lunch or dinner date. We (my husband and I) always come back for the delicious coconut margarita, which you can even order by the pitcher. The rim is lined with toasted coconut, and it is so so good. I was surprised when reading some of the reviews about the service. This definitely was not the case for us. Rather, we were greeted by friendly smiles and seated promptly. Our kind and friendly server, Ricky, was a pro at handling his busy section and checked in with us often to make sure we were okay. This was a last minute spot that I added to our weekend getaway. We were wrapping up a day at Sea World and was looking for a spot with great views and Mexican food. Coasterra sits right along the water, located across the bay from downtown San Diego. It's a little challenging to get an Uber out this way, but it's worth the effort. We stopped by for their happy hour menu, which was well worth it. The regular menu is a little pricey, but you can oder off the happy hour menu during the week from 3:30 to 5:30 PM. They have house wine at $11 each, which is quite a deal compared to the regular menu. I recommend getting a seat on the patio and getting advance reservation. We lucked out, and snagged one of the last spots outside. You're also not too far from Liberty Station, which is where we went after our light snacks and drinks. read more

They have heat lamps outside, so don't be afraid to sit outside even if you get cold easily. What really made the night was the service. Coasterra is the kind of place you take people to when you want them to casually fall in love with San Diego. We somehow managed to commit the ultimate rookie move, and I regret nothing. We skipped the mains entirely because the appetizers kept stealing the show. One order turned into "okay but what if we try just one more..." and suddenly we're living our best appetizer-only life. Let's start with the salsa, because wow. This is the kind of salsa you wish you could bottle up and casually "bring out" at home like you made it yourself. Packed with flavor, with just enough heat to elevate things without sending your taste buds into survival mode. Then there's the table-side made guacamole. Not to be dramatic, but this might be some of the best guac I've ever had, and I don't throw that title around lightly. You get full control over what goes in and the spice level, and the result is this perfectly creamy, beautifully balanced masterpiece that makes you question every other guacamole you've had before. The calamari was also solid, but fair warning: there are fried peppers and jalapeños hiding in there that will absolutely keep you on your toes. It's a fun little game of "am I about to regret this bite?" (Shoutout to the water refills for staying on standby.) The ceviche was fresh and good, though a bit more subtle compared to the bold flavors of everything else. The potato flautas didn't quite land for me, but that is more of a texture thing. I could see someone else loving them if that's their vibe. Now the real surprise is as the roasted tempura cauliflower. I've had cauliflower every way imaginable, and this might actually be my favorite. The flavors are so bold and well-executed that you almost forget you're eating cauliflower, which feels like a magic trick. I do have to call out the one miss of the night, the churros. They had a noticeably burnt flavor, and even the caramel sauce carried that same note. It could've just been an off night, but it stood out in an otherwise strong lineup. That said, the service was great, the ambiance is top-tier, and the waterfront views make this place a must visit restaurant. We had a great Valentine's meal back then which is why we chose to come back when shopping around for where to eat on Thanksgiving Day 2025. We opted for the $89.99 buffet. I was skeptical at first since my perception of buffets has changed since the pandemic, but I was actually pleased with the buffet service during dinner. All stations were well maintained and everything was refilled/replenished fairly frequently. I also enjoyed the variety of selections. I wish I came hungrier - I liked most items I tried (turkey, steak, salmon/rice, etc.) and wish I could come back for more rounds! The dessert station was also plentiful. The service both times were also great. As others have said, it is on the pricier side, but honestly a worth it experience for any celebrations or dates. One of the best parts of this place? The incredible view of Downtown San Diego. You are on the water and the ambiance makes dining here even more special. I went with my buddy and his wife for a 5:30 reservation. We were running late (twice), so I called the restaurant to let them know. Both times they told me not to worry and they'd still honor our reservation. Super professional and extremely kind. When we finally arrived, we were seated immediately. We sat outside and the view was absolutely beautiful--this place is a perfect date-night spot. I ordered a Coasterra IPA, and me and my buddy both got a smoked old fashioned. His wife ordered the Ancho-Mexican Chocolate Bread Pudding for the table. Drinks were great, and the dessert was awesome. For dinner I had the Griddled Pasture-Raised Chicken and my buddy had the Enchiladas Suizas. Portion sizes were generous and everything was prepared PERFECTLY. Both plates were completely clean when we were done. After dinner we shared the Roasted Coconut Flan. I got a regular old fashioned and my buddy ordered a Frida Rita. Came here today to celebrate an early Valentine's Day with the wife and they did not disappoint. The service was awesome and the drinks phenomenal! Pineapple tamarind marg and the coconut marg 10/10. Ordered half dozen oysters and guac to start. Also , they give complimentary chips and salsa but they could do better because it tasted store bought (pace picante) in our opinion. Mahi and carnitas tacos were delicious and flavorful but the rice that came with it was mushy . All in all, we will be back because of the fantastic service, drinks and food. read more

I did some looking around on Tik Tok for restaurant in the SD area and found Coasterra. Me and my wife decided to patronize the business on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy inside and outside. The location for this place is amazing. It's right off the water and if you sit outside, the views are immaculate while looking at downtown San Diego. Initially we elected to sit at the bar while waiting to be seated and ordered two cocktail. Both drinks were good. Now, the food. Ok, so we ordered the super chicken nachos. I'll be honest, they were subpar and I could definitely make better nachos at home. Wasn't impressed whatsoever and I felt bad for wasting it but it just wasn't appetizing. Overall experience was decent, would love to come back and give Coasterra a second chance by trying something else on the menu. read more

I've been going to Clevel next door for years and I finally made it to Coasterra. The views are even better here and they have a lot more tables by the water. I got the fish it was a huge portion! The fish was crispy and nicely grilled! We also got a Guac for the table. We didn't realize it came with pork rinds but ate around it. Service was great and we never felt rushed. We dined at 5:45 on a Monday in the summer and by the time we left at 7:30 the place was packed. I think reservations are important but we were able to get one last minute for the earlier seating. read more
