Went at 12:30 on a summer weekday and it wasn't busy at all. I guess they recently changed their menu, so the server eas excited to share with us some of his new favorites and was extremely helpful. Ordered the shrimp quesadilla,, it was LOADED with shrimp. They definitely didn't skimp. My margarita was great, will be returning again.
The food was really great and I loved the attentive service! I recently attended a small birthday celebration at Cocina de Barro and was delighted with the quality and flavor of the food. Parking in the area was rough, but at least there is a nearby parking garage with good prices ($5). We ordered a bunch of items off the menu, and everything was perfect. At less than $50/head for a huge and wonderful meal with drinks, this was a bargain in my book. Five stars for all elements of the experience!

Walked in after the Pride Parade with a group of 8 and we were sat almost immediately! The service was efficient and the food came out quickly too. I ordered the birria tacos and they were delicious. Highly recommend
Yummy brunch! Nothing too special but it gets the job done, especially if you have a large group or party. They were able to seat 12 of us at around 10:30AM. I got the emoladas and a cafe de olla. I've had much better cafe de ollas and the enmoladas were tasty and the plate was huge! It was around $21 and I couldn't eat it all there was so much food there. Don't skip their breakfast potatoes!!
I had dinner here a couple of Saturdays ago and was shocked (and saddened!) that the restaurant remained nearly empty the entire time. I first found this spot due to it being Oaxacan cuisine. Our party of four had a great time and all of our food was delightful! All of my tablemates even tried grasshoppers (chapulines) for the first time! They were on the side for the guac, which is traditional to Oaxaca. I had a popsicle margarita, which was cute and tasty. For my meal, I split the short rib mole with my boyfriend. We had so many leftovers despite doing our best to eat up! We definitely did not have room for dessert. Prices were reasonable and service was prompt. I hope we just found them on an off night as they definitely deserve crowds!

The waiter saw that it was my birthday and he even provided me a free tres leches cake to try, which was absolutely delicious. The serving size was pretty large. My entrée even came with potatoes. It was so much food I couldn't finish it all. Definitely would recommend for a modern Mexican brunch.

Cocina de Barrio in Hillcrest is a great spot for brunch with a chill, welcoming vibe. The birria chilaquiles were full of flavor and the birria was super tender. The chips held up well in the sauce, and the toppings added a nice fresh balance. We also had a breakfast plate with eggs, crispy roasted potatoes, and tinga quesadillas, which were really good and nicely seasoned. Coffee was solid, service was friendly, and the food came out fast even though it was busy. The only thing that kept this from being five stars was the café de olla, which lacked flavor. Other than that, great portions and great food, and definitely a place I'd come back to when I'm in Hillcrest.
Parking can be tough if you're there on a busy day, as it is Hillcrest. There is nice indoor and outdoor seating. Service was good and food came out in a good amount of time. Ordered the ceviche, Tampiquena, and Tlayuda. The ceviche was good and didn't taste fishy at all. I would have preferred it to be more limey though. The Tampiquena was good as well- it's a solid protein and carbs dish. The sauce wasn't too heavy either. The tlayuda was new to me, something my friend ordered, and wasn't too bad. Overall a pretty solid spot espeically for a weekend brunch.
My husband's boss was in town from Illinois and we decided to take her to this spot on a recommendation. The food was amazing! We were a party of 7 and were sat immediately! My drink had a popsicle in it (so cute). Plus they had bottomless mimosas on the menu (and our waiter was always on it with the refills). Definitely check this place out!
We went for dinner and shared four kinds of Antojitos: Infladita De Barbacoa (probably our favorite and the most unique), Memelitas Veganas (filling with lots of veggies), Quesadillas De Huitlacoche (served with a rich mole that had a little spiciness), and Taquitos Dorados. I found all of the dishes to be well-presented, tasty, and unique. The portions were large enough that it was quite filling for three adults. The food came out surprisingly fast. I requested no cilantro, and I appreciate that they took my request seriously, even putting avocado sauce that had only a mild amount of cilantro separately on the side.
Was here a few months ago and got attended by Paco & Luciano, and till this day some of the best service I've ever had, they were great, food was great, MUSIC was great, overall 10/10 loved it here!
It's very rare that I find an upscale Mexican restaurant that I absolutely LOVE... but Cocina de Barrio completely won me over. I was in town looking for a good brunch spot and came across Cocina de Barrio on Yelp. The food looked delicious, but let me tell you... it tasted like home. You know that scene in Ratatouille when the food critic takes that first bite and is instantly transported back to his childhood? That was me. The sauces, the flavors, the textures... everything was absolutely magnificent. It was honestly so hard to choose what I wanted. I would happily pay extra for a buffet here! Hint, hint! I ordered the Oaxaqueño Breakfast, with nopales (cactus) cooked into the eggs with salsa, paired with refried beans and potatoes. Can we just take a moment to give some serious compliments to the chef?! Every bite was packed with flavor. I also paired my breakfast with a Café de Olla, and I loved that it wasn't overly sweet. I enjoy my cafecito, and this one was just right. The ambience is colorful, vibrant, and beautifully filled with greenery, which made the whole experience even better. everyone was very welcoming and friendly Overall, Cocina de Barrio was such a wonderful find. I'm already looking forward to coming back and trying more dishes the next time I'm in town. 10/10 -- my taste buds definitely felt at home. read more

Wow! What a great spot. The happy hour is seriously one of the best around, with awesome drink specials and delicious tacos that are hard to beat! Everything was fresh, flavorful, and the prices made it even better! The service was fantastic and the whole place had such a fun, lively vibe. A SPECIAL SHOUTOUT TO THEO, who greeted everyone with a huge smile and made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. He was an awesome bartender-friendly, energetic, and made the experience even more enjoyable. If you're looking for great tacos, tasty drinks, amazing happy hour deals, and a fun atmosphere, this place is definitely worth checking out. Can't wait to come back! read more

I had an amazing experience at Cocina de Barrio. We came for brunch on a Sunday and were able to find parking in the lot. The bottomless mimosas were amazing and so yummy and pretty. I also got the crunchy French toast and it was so delicious- the best French toast I've had. It came with lots of fruits and was so good. The service was great and attentive as well. Raiders of the Lost Art (of thrift shopping). Your fearless adventurer was exploring various temples in the greater San Diego area. And by temples, I mean thrift shops. From the South Bay to Old Town, we scoured. We eventually reach the end of the rainbow, the fabulous land of Hillcrest. They have all the good treasure! When lo and behold, a local eatery that boasts Urban Mexican Cuisine & strong drinks. You had me at Mexican. So it was, that Indy & Marion decided to dine at this fine corner location establishment. Not very hungry as we ate prior, we went with something light, guacamole with chips and some alcohol! The cornerstone of every nutritious meal. My forever plus one ordered the Soleado Picante, a citrusy burst of flavor to the mouth, like Indy punching that dude to steal his, too small for his build, jacket! The Tajin rimmed glass with some sliced jalapeños adds that little bit of Mexicanity we so enjoy! I ordered the Carajillo, because I am a caffeine addicted, albeit well fueled, explorer! I did eye the chilaquiles rojos & pancakes the size of Belloq's ego! Maybe we will save that for the sequel...Indiana Jones & the Temple of Brunch! This place has been the new hip and happenin' location around. They have added numerous locations around SD. On the weekends it is tremendously packed so we went during the weekday. We tried the chilaquiles verdes which we were told was the better of the two chilaquiles. The sauce was very fresh and light but wish they put more beans (it's at the very bottom) and more sour cream to cut through the flavor a bit more. But it was solid. Started off with the cafe de olla which was tast We also tried the enmoladas but substituted the sauce with the mole negro sauce (instead of the mole Colorado) which we HIGHLY recommend. Our server recommended it to us. The mole sauce was phenomenal and we could eat that all day. For dessert we finished it off with tres leches. Please keep in mind that this isn't a true tres leches type of thing. Yes it's cake with some condensed milk soaked through but it was on the lighter side of the milkiness and had a lot of Oreo crumbles on top. Portions here are very large here all around so get ready to eat! Please note on weekends they have a two hour maximum. Everything here is very instagram-able by nature including their pancakes and churros plate which they tout as their flagship (which we ended up not getti Parking is street. Had breakfast/brunch yesterday morning, right at 10 am, when they opened. I had the breast of chicken with Oaxacan mole and it was like I had experienced in Mexico City. My friends had the chicken tinga..and every bite was savored. I had a metzcal pineapple cocktail that was very refreshing, too. I am visiting Hillcrest for the week and this has been one of my most favorite places to dine out. Service from start to finish was perfect. I definitely will look forward to coming back. read more

My mom and I were looking for brunch in the downtown San Diego area, and this spot caught my eye. Cocina de Barrio is a cute spot serving hearty food, delicious and aesthetic cocktails, and good vibes all around! They don't take reservations for brunch, for those trying to reserve beforehand. It's a huge seating area though, both indoors and outdoors, so you and your group should be ser! My mom and I walked in and got seated immediately. Our servers were super nice, and had a good sense of humor. We ordered the enmoladas (which my mom enjoyed), and I devoured the sopes benny. Both dishes were delicious!! I also got the Tia Chata cocktail, which was a cute cocktail that came with its own popsicle! I could see the girlies having a cute brunch here, especially with their mimosa deal. Since it is so close to Mexico, San Diego has some of the best Mexican food without crossing the border. I was specifically looking for Oaxacan food, and Cocina de Barrio did not disappoint after a long drive from the Bay Area. Huitlacoche quesadillas, lamb birria memelitas and salmon mole Amarillo were all equally good that we alternated between all 3 until it was polished off. I do wish I had a bigger stomach as I would have loved to try the tetelas and was so tempted to return if I didn't already have dinner plans for the rest of our stay. Since technically I can get huitlacoche quesadillas in the Bay Area, next time I would skip that not because it wasn't excellent but so I can try those tetelas. However, everything was spot on in flavor without it being spicy. read more

OMG in love with this spot! Some of the best ceviche with striped bass I've had. It was fresh, flavorful, and they served a 'hot sauce' with it that truly topped it off perfectly. For happy hour (Monday-Friday 3-5pm) it was only $14. The margaritas also $5-$9 on happy hour and those are incredible, too. No pre-made margarita mix either, which is required for us to order one hahah. Fun to sit on the patio on the side of the restaurant as well, and great service. We'll be regulars here now--very excited to try more of their dishes. read more

While visiting San Diego for the weekend, I wanted to check out this restaurant based on all the positive reviews, and I'm so glad I did! The restaurant has a few outdoor tables, but mostly it's all indoor dining. Although all the sitting is indoor, it feels really open and airy because of all the open spaces and all the large, opened doors. When my family and I arrived, the restaurant seemed quite busy. Despite being promptly seated, we had to request our server. Once our server arrived to take our order, the process was seamless. We placed our order, and it was quickly delivered. I opted for their chicken mole, which was an absolute delight! It had a spicy kick that I enjoyed. I was happy to discover that they served hand-made tortillas. My main course came with rice and beans. To complete my meal, I ordered their popsicle margarita, which was an incredible creation! The strong tequila flavor was perfectly complemented by the sweet mango popsicle flavor. This was such a great experience and I really enjoyed every bite of the meal and the ambiance of this restaurant. I would definitely recommend this place if you love Mexican cuisine. read more

Pretty tasty lunch today! I got the birria tacos- you can choose either lamb or beef, or some combo of the two! I mixed and matched, and both were good, but if you like lamb I think they were the better of the two options. The rice and beans on the side were seasoned well and tasted better than they looked ;P. Delicious cafe de olla, very attentive service, relaxed ambiance with indoor and patio seating. read more

This place is great! My kids brought me here for brunch. They have been to a different location and raved that this one is the best. My daughters got bottomless mimosas and our waiter was extremely attentive and kept their glasses full. I had a nice time trying the different drinks from their extensive menu, and everything was yummy. The food was also fab. Nothing about this place disappointed. I am a fan of cute spots that provide sweet service. There is nothing like a nice restaurant with happy servers. This is one of those places. We ordered a few dishes and they were all good. My favorite was the birria on the chilaquiles. I would image any other birria (beef) dish is delicious. The crowds around us were the only loud thing there. It was such a chill setting. We sat outside which was great, not much traffic the day we went so little to no noise on the streets. read more

Amazing cocktails and equally tasty food. We got a few popsicle margaritas and a La Tia Chata (has rumchata, horchata, vodka) that comes with a coconut popsicle - the latter was our favorite of the lot. The Churros french toast is not to be missed. It sounds like it would be too sweet but it is honestly perfect! The dulce de leche ice cream that comes with it is delightful. For my mains, I got the Vegan coconut aguachile. The ingredient list fascinated me - young coconut meat, avocado, red onion, cucumber, radishes, cilantro, and spicy lime sauce. Everything was super fresh, well presented and delicious. The portion sizes are huge!! Would definitely come back for more! read more

I stopped by Cocina de Barrio for Saturday brunch, and needless to say, there was a line before they even opened at 10am! Our party of four was one of the first to be seated, and we had the option of sitting inside or outside. We chose to dine in, and we were seated close by the bar. Decor was well done, and inside feels very lively and vibrant. Service was excellent, and we didn't feel rushed at all. I ordered a Jamaica mimosa to start and the Chilaquiles Verde with a side of avocado and Arroz con Leche pancakes for the table. The mimosa was strong, and the bubbles definitely got me buzzed. The chilaquiles may just be the best I've ever had, and the birria was so tender and flavorful. The Arroz con Leche pancakes were good, but maybe not something I'd order again. If you're in or nearby Hillcrest, this spot is a must for your favorite Mexican dishes! read more

This is seriously my favorite breakfast spot. I hadn't been in a while because I was stuck at home with a new puppy so when I found out they were dog friendly I was BEYOND excited! We brought our puppy here and it was a wonderful experience. Delicious food, friendly staff, SUPER fast service. I always recommend this place. read more

They do not have a private parking lot. You need to drive and park up against the curbs in designated parking zones.

I couldn't locate your actual hours for Happy Hour. Did I miss it on the web site?
As of 2/18/22 Happy hour is from 3-5pm Tues-Sat
Can you make reservations for brunch? If not what's the typical weekend wait?
Hola, we unfortunately do not take reservations during brunch. We only take dinner reservations. We open at 10am and it usually starts getting busy around 11:30am-1:30pm. Hope this helps!
Is there reservations for larger parties?
Hola, we only take reservations for dinner.
Is it easy to find parking around 5 pm on Thursday?
Definitely should be able to find parking within a block from the restaurant 😉
