I've eaten at quite a few Peruvian restaurants, and this has to be the nicest so far: maybe I haven't been to enough. Ambience is obscure and lighting is scarce, but don't let it fool you. The staff are attentive and knowledgeable about what they are serving. The food was presented well and tasted very good. The one let-down was that the hot sauce was not spicy. Which, that would explain the overall blandness, for Peruvian, of the food. I guess once you know that the waiters are screening the patrons, based on whether they look "spanish" or not, lowers the authenticity of the experience. Probably won't go back, because the papas huanchaina were not even a little spicy nor could I taste soda crackers in the sauce. If you can't impress me with that simple common appetizer, then I'm not expecting anything spectacular. read more

Really horrible service. Came with a friend on a Friday night hoping to have a nice dining experience, but was quickly let down. After we were seated, no one acknowledged us for nearly 15 minutues! Not even a glass of water! The restaurant was reasonably busy, but nothing crazy, so we were surprised that two tables that were definitely seated after us were waited on first as we were completely ignored. I'm usually forgiving when it comes to hurried wait staff, but as this wasn't the case, the whole thing was ridiculous. Walked out. Never coming back. What a waste. read more

I came here excited, but left extremely disappointed. The Lomo was cold, there was barely any meat, and the rice was undercooked. The Chicken chaufa was all rice and hardly any chicken (just little scraps of chicken) I have had many chaufas with very large portions of meat and this was not it. The food came out late and we rarely saw our waiter. No refills on water. It was just seriously disappointing. I have been to many Peruvian restaurants and this was in the bottom . Spent way too much money for a completely unenjoyable experience. Awful, I should have gone to the Mexican restaurant next door instead. Amazing service! Amazing food! You have to try the lomo saltado and chicken. It is our fourth time here and we're never disappointed.

I went to this restaurant because i seen they had Gelato and Sangria. As i walked in a young lady behind the bar told me there weren't anymore seats outside and it will be an hour wait, but if i want to dine in I can, I told her that will be fine. She told me to give her a minute. As soon as she walked away, an waiter from outside came inside and asked me what do i want. I told him i was being helped already. He then goes to tell me there's no more seating outside. I told him that's fine, I'm dining in. Next he says there's no seats inside. I told him the young lady told me there was already. He turns around and give the girl a look and tell her there are no more seats. She then tells him yes it is right there, he had a few more words to say to her. So he goes to look in a book i guess for reservations, then tells me to follow after him after telling her "she's suppose to cover him" whatever that is suppose to mean. He seats me down and I have an young child with me. No menu and asked me what do i want. I asked him if i can have a menu. He leaves then comes back and tell me i can't stay because someone made reservations, I can take whatever I want to go. So why sit me down in the first place? He checked the book before seating me, if you already knew someone was coming why not say it before having me take a seat. I never in my life felt uncomfortable at an restaurant before. The food and service was excellent. The hot sauce was so good that I asked to buy some...and they sold me some (very cheap, might I add)! The drink selection was OK, but the atmosphere left something to be desired. I think they could benefit from some table cloths and sprucing it up a bit. Its not bad, but has a lot of potential, and currently feels like an irish person decorated a Latin American restaurant...it feels like a run of the mill pub. Either way, the food was kick ass. So my family and I have been going to this restaurant for years now and we use to enjoy it. But recently with the younger management in charge it has changed. They are known for their roast chicken and now they tend to tell you they are out of it to try and force you to order a la carte. I know this first hand as the serve came over a few minute after and said they found some roast chicken!! I know times are tough but don't push your regular customers away!!! read more

Good smells when you walk in the door, and they give you a friendly greeting and have attentive wait staff. The drinks are a bit tame, but well mixed. The portion sizes are large, so our group of 5 shared some dishes. We got plantains and causa rellena for appetizers - delicious. The causa rellena was light, creamy, and lightly lime flavored. Loved this. Two of our party shared the paella, which they enjoyed until stuffed and still had leftovers, my husband got the bistec (very tender), and I ordered the tacu tacu (a rice and bean mash) with seafood and a delicious aji panca sauce. If you enjoy Peruvian (or other Latin American) food, you'll love this place. And even if you are disinclined to try the typical Peruvian specialities, the grilled or fried steak and chicken are awesome and more "standard". For example, less adventurous but reall wonderful is the rotisserie chicken (POLLO A LA BRASA), unlike any chicken anywhere, and absolutely delicious. In the mood for something different, a little spicy or vegetarian? Try papas a la huancaína (potatoes in a spicy cheese sauce). The fish dishes are amazing too. The soups are all wonderful (and constitute a complete meal; they are very filling). In fact, the portions of whatever you order are all large, even the appetizers; you will not leave Machu Pichu hungry! We've been coming to Machu Pichu for about 25 years and have watched it expand its premises as it has grown more and more popular. The service is solicitous and prompt and the prices very reasonable. I would give this restaurant 4 1/2 stars if I could, and the only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars is that the ambiance is a little sparse. read more

This is an upscale Peruvian restaurant in an area filled with cheaper Latino restaurants of great variety. From very limited experience, these gringos have no trouble understanding why Martha Stewart chose Peruvian for her last meal before entering the crowbar hotel. The lady obviously knows her stuff. For three, we ordered two meals. There was a marinated lamb dish with rice and beans and a rather exotic peasant's steak dish that included fried eggs on the steak, the odd predilection of hot dogs and french fries. The beans were hardly the routine pinto or red beans of a taco joint and the french fries were obviously prepared from fresh potatoes. There was no shortage whatever of food. There was the usual near lethal hot sauce and a rather unpleasant milder sauce for those who don't mind tempting fate. My respect for Peruvian food was surely not diminished by this restaurant. 100% RECOMMEND. My family and I needed dinner on the way home from a vacation in Maine and we randomly decided to stop here. The neighborhood seemed a little run down but we needed something to eat. The service was great. Very friendly and attentive staff that was helpful explaining some of the things on the menu like ají. We ordered tostones (fried & squished savory plantains) to share. They took a bit to come but when they did they were hot and fresh. I got ceviche mixto which came quickly and my parents got a fish and a chicken dish that was extremely flavorful and came with a side of rice (you can choose from white, yellow, green (cilantro herbed) or chicken fried rice). Very affordable prices especially for the quality and amount of food we got. We're leaving stuffed and happy. Love this spot and we hope to come back some day when we're nearby. They also play some "traditional" music in the background. The only downside is the lighting is low so pics don't come out great. PS: the restaurant is large and spacious, it has a full bar, and it caters to mostly Hispanic people...that's when you know it's really good!! read more

I've frequented this place many times and for the most part been satisfied but I recently called in for take out for the chicken fried rice and was very disappointed.. I basically paid $11.99 for some flavored rice and scallions because I could barely see any chicken!!! Chicken is one of the least expensive protein on the market and this place shouldn't be skimping on it for Christ sake!!! Chicken?? I could see if it were shrimp or steak nut chicken!!! Machu Picchu is definately one of the best restaurants in the Hudson Valley. The waitstaff was very helpful and attentive, recommending 2 authentic dishes that were very delicious- the red snapper in spicy sauce served with yucca and the chicken in cilantro sauce served with cilantro rice. Really delicious and unique food, attentive service but not hovering and nice atmosphere...My only knock is that they don't have a lunch menu - everything is full dinner price. My wife and I went at around 1:30 on a Sunday afternoon. We each had a bowl of soup, an entree and ice tea and club soda to drink. The bill was over $50 not including tip, which I thought was rather expensive for a place on Broadway in Newburgh. My husband is addicted to their whole roasted chicken meal that is seasoned to the bone. He often orders it for take out but last night we decided to dine in and had the skirt steak that had a sauce I wanted to drink by the gallon. This was our first visit to Machu Picchu, and our first time going to a Peruvian restaurant. We enjoy trying to foods so it was nice to read over the menu and see all the delicious sounding dishes. We started out with the Papa Rellena, which was a mixture of sirloin, onions, and raisons surrounded by mashed potatoes and then lightly deep fried. It was kind of amazing. The main dishes were a Peruvian stew with a strong sesame flavor and something called Tacu Tacu which had steak and veggies over rice and beans. The flavors were nicely balanced, and the ceviche came with a side of roasted corn and also very large, white corn (never seen that variety before). This was my first experience of a peruvian restaurant, but boy did I enjoy it... had a ceviche for a starter, and then a really hearty chicken dish called carapulcra, and then finished it off with the tres leches cake. We order Tacu tacu with seafood and we didn't like at all, it had not fresh fish flavor so we told the waitress we did not want the dish, she made a face and got upset with us, she went to talk to the owner who told the waitress to take the plate back, waitress told us not to bother ordering anything with seafood because it was going to taste the same, we order lomo slatado and it was acceptable but not very good, the causa was poor in flavor, we are not going back to this restaurant, food and service was awful. read more
