It had been a while since my last haircut, so I booked my first appointment with Jose--and he absolutely delivered. I asked to keep the top long with a fade (2 and 1), trim the sideburns, and square off the back from the natural line. Jose listened carefully and confirmed everything before he started cutting, which I really appreciated. The neck shave was a nice touch, and the conversation was easy and enjoyable throughout. Was in the area and needed a beard trim and with the help of Yelp found Mackhard Barber Shoppe. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by the barber who was doing a cut. The floor was clean, mirrors spotless with music playing my wait was minimal. Steve walked out and introduced himself and qualified my beard trim. Unlike other establishments Steve listened, went to work his craft, lined me up, faded the manliness, applied a hot towel and finished me up with beard oil. Here in Naperville on Washington street there is a Mackhard. A place you want to steer far away from. This is the dirtiest looking barber shop you ever want to miss going to. Filthy. What they do is blow the hair and dirt, and dust into the air right in front of you. The barber Romero, don't listen to any instruction. I tell him 3 times not to take too much off the top cause it does not grow back anymore. First thing he does is go in slow motion taking too much off the top. Never had such a terrible experience. You couldn't pay me to go back there. Then I tell him to take it down to a 2 or 3 off the ears. He doesn't do that either. I have to ask him to go back and take it off the ears. The dude says he should of called in sick. Romero loaded on DayQuil couldn't even see what he was doing. Breathing all over me got me sick and with the worse haircut I ever had in my life and I had to pay 40 bucks. No wonder this perfect location barber shop is empty with no customers. The absolute worse place to go. Even the chairs to wait are so scummy and low on the floor. Just a crap place. Black barber pole. That's about all you deserve is a black barber pole. Like to get a hold of the owner. There is more. Next I should call the health department. First experience I got pimples on my head. I tell Romero he has responsibility to keep comb and everything clean. His comb is in some disgusting drawer instead of the blue alcohol water like barbers do. Place is a sleeze bucket. I will never go back. They can kiss where the sun don't shine. They don't know how to do business. Instead of sweeping the floor after each cut they just blow the hair into the air and use the same comb on everyone. Place disgust me. Can't wait to see them close. I am sure they will. Mackhard is a barber shop that brings an authentic traditional barber shop feel with progressive talent. I have had my hair cut by Bianca and Steve . Bianca is a talented attention to detail stylist who always hit the mark for a perfect haircut. Steve an ex MMA fighter, pretty boy who can make you look like whatever you want. Staff was nice and friendly, haircut not so much. I called before hand and asked if they could do a good fade. The lady said they could. I went in with some pretty good length up top. I had requested the haircut in the pictures with the guy with tattoos. The guy that cut my hair left it with this horrible cow lick on the side. The haircut was completely uneven on top and laid weird, because it was different lengths. I had to ask to shampoo my hair, as I had been wearing a hat and it laid oddly. I'm very surprised he didn't do that from the start just to make sure he cut it evenly. I am also very surprised he didn't catch how uneven the top looked after the cut. I even asked him to fade the sides because I had all these stray hairs just sticking out on the side. Especially on the right side highlighted in the pictures. I asked for a smooth gradual fade in that side to make a smooth transition. He did the opposite of that and just chopped it off. I'm very annoyed because I am a first time customer and I was expecting something much better. The haircut I requested and what I received look nothing alike and all because the guy cutting my hair seemed to be in a rush. His touch was also kind of hard-handed and yanky. People don't want to go into a barber and feel more stressed from their week because the guy cutting your hair is trying to rush through the haircut. If anything, it should be a pampering experience. I honestly didn't want to tip because I felt like I was used as a Guinea pig by someone who was just trying to get me out of there ASAP and unable to deliver what I requested, even when having called before hand to make sure I got a solid cut. Not once did my barber stop to actually pause and look at the cut with attention. He seemed more interested in rushing me out the door, even when there were no people! Again, the experience felt rough, rushed, and anxious. I could tell he was kind of nervous which only put me more on edge. read more

This is like my third or fourth time at Mackhard, and what can I say! I have been very happy with the service of the stylists. I have never walked away unhappy. Case in point, today. I had Emilia today and she was so wonderful and gracious. She listened to my needs and went to work on me. By the time she was done with my haircut and beard trim, I was very happy with her work. You have an amazing staff of stylists working there; they are so professional and customer orientated. If anyone I know is looking for and awesome barber, I will recommend your line of stores, especially the Downers Grove location. read more

Went in today for the first time with my son in search of our new Barber. I love the no frills look and feel. Prices are very fair. It's a great social environment where you feel comfortable right away. Eric gave my son a nice clean cut. Terri cut my hair and it's the best cut I have had on some time. I also got a beard trim and straight edge shave since I was looking rough. Best shave I have had, period. I could have fallen asleep in the chair. I'll be back soon! Update: A year later and it's still great. While Terri is no longer there they have an entire crew now doing great work. Great spot for a quality haircut and great conversation. read more

I needed a haircut really bad and since I just moved into the area, I tried out Mackhard. Since I was a walk-in, I had to wait a little bit. I ended up getting my hair cut with Sarah. Super nice lady. She did a great job on my fade. Since I'm not a regular, she asked about what I like in my fade length and then did a small test cut on my sideburn to make sure that I'm ok with the length before diving in. Everything turned out great! I'm happy with the cut and will probably stop back in a month for a clean up. read more

Mark cut my hair. He is my guy. He does impressive work with precision every single time. He is personable and easy to talk to. You won't be disappointed. I literally changed my hair about seven times during the cut and he didn't complain or make me feel uncomfortable. I know I was a pain but he kept his cool. The stellar cut and great service will keep me coming back. I also went with a straight shave from Steve. I have had straight shaves before but none like this. He does it right. He preps the skin with hot, steamed towels. Twice! He conditions the skin at the end. He didn't cut the skin or draw blood at all. This hasn't always been the case in my past experiences with straight shaves. I even had an ingrown hair and he didn't nick my skin at all. I was impressed. The man is good. The place has two chairs, a flat screen, fire place (or fake one?), and they play Johnny Cash. I am sold. I have been looking for a long time for a solid place that I can trust to cut my hair for my wedding. I found it! I will be seeing Mark the man again soon! read more

I received probably the worst haircut of my life there a while back. I'm a guy and I simply told female barber to do what she wanted and make it look nice. She left two or three spots that were a good inch longer than the rest of the hair. And when I went back to ask her to clean it up she chopped it so much that it doesn't even almost look like the opposite side of my head. Just butchered it. I've been growing my hair out for about 8 months and now I have to chop it all off. She was pleasant but cut my hair like she was in school still. Very disappointing. read more

I'm really trying to mentally reconcile how this barber shop has such high reviews. Steven cut my hair and it was terrible. I told him I get my hair cut very regularly and really only want everything cleaned up. He essentially ignored everything I told him and proceeded to lop off about a month's worth of hair. Rather than simply apologize when I voiced my displeasure, he tried arguing with me that other barbers/hair stylists must be lying to me when telling me what clipper guard they use. On that note, he is far too reliant on clippers. For $30 per cut I really expect more scissor work. If I wanted someone to almost entirely use different size clipper guards to cut my hair I could've saved some money and gone to a great clips. Save yourself the hassle and get your hair cut somewhere else! read more

This was once Phil's Barber Shop with crusty old Phil as the proprietor. After his untimely death last year his family sold the business and the iconic buffalo head hanging on the wall. The new owner has really spruced the place up while maintaining that local barbershop feel. What I really like is the hot shave with the straight-edged razor on the nape of the neck. I really need to try the regular shave at some point. I think it would make a great holiday gift. The haircuts are good, though I need to work with them a little more to get my hair cut the way I want it. I haven't gotten a haircut here in a long time... but I got such a horrible haircut here and awful service that I feel compelled to write a review. One of the barbers here completely butchered my haircut.... I would have been far better off at a generic chain like supercuts or something. Dude was acting like he was strung out on something and wasn't like I could just stop him in the middle of a cut. To add insult, I brought this up with the owner, and he gave zero sh**s, told me that it was between me and the guy who cut my hair. So yeah, come here if you want a druggie to cut your hair and a douche to insult you. Regardless, Eric asked the right questions and cut my hair in a way that looks good with my face. While I enjoyed the haircut, I will not come back. The haircut was alright nothing too spectacular. For 17$ you can get anther good one somewhere else. Altho I had a 5$ yelp offer... The one gentleman was soooo rude. He kept going on about strip clubs etc. and how he spends all his money there. Which are his favorite... I left not appalled because 'any real man would go to a strip club right???' well Justin beiber I kno does lol... I got my haircut here today. I got there at 10 and had to wait 15 minutes for someone to come in even though there wasn't anybody there for an appointment or in line. They open at 9:30... I told the barber I want to keep the top how it is. I need to just fade the side and the top of the fade being a 2. He took a fat line of hair off the top that took me 3 months to grow. He did it without confirming that's what I wanted. How are you just gonna shave off a line 3 inches wide, ON THE TOP, and not even ask me if it's forsure what I want. I said screw it, I'm not going to walk around with the part of my hair down the middle of my head. I now have a shaved head. The end P.S. I downloaded yelp just to write this down. Being a waiter, my presentation is important, so now that I'm bald, i not only lost my hair, but my confidence as well. read more

I went in to get a haircut and the Michael ruined my pompadour. My part is gone, and he cut off so much on the top that I can't get any rise out of the side. I asked him to cut the front, "Just the tips" and he took off an inch and a half. Do not recommend if you want a classic haircut. read more

Went here for my first and my last haircut. I showed up and nobody was in the shop. Had to wait 15 minutes for a stylist. I was in the chair in the muddle if a cut and UPS was delivered. The stylist said he couldn't wait to see what was in the package and left me sitting there while he and 3 other barbers took the time to look through the package. I asked for a straight razor shave and the package contained an electric razor that he "wanted to try out" so I didn't even get what I asked for today. Customer service is really lacking in this shop. I won't return. read more

Mike is great. I just had my first cut with him and it looks real good. He takes his time and makes sure the haircut ends up where I want it. This is a small operation -- only two chairs and when I was here Mike was the only one cutting hair. Luckily I caught him right when he opened and I didn't have to wait. I think the Mackhard 40's "ring-a-ding-ding" atmosphere (from all these franchises) is a bit forced but who cares -- the haircut is good!! A men's cut cost me $19, which is a couple bucks higher than other barber places around -- but I think it was worth it. A cut for my 7 year-old is $15, but it's $30 for both of us together -- next time that's what we'll do. My one complaint is a small one: The "hot lather" for my neck was ice cold. Again, I caught Mike as he was opening up so it didn't have time to warm up. No biggie. I'll definitely be back!! read more

His friends post these reviews. Its a low level chop shop with constant turnover. I've been here several times and they were all inconsistent experiences. There is an art to the barber process that involves three major components - scissor work, clippers and straight razor for the edges. Here, they only use clippers. When done right (high fade, hard part) the cut last about an hour. Here, they rush through and it shows. The place looks cool, but fails in the most critical areas. Appointment process is was a pain. The quality of the haircut I received here was awful. The barber was clearly not trained properly. I was a regular customer when Rick Motta used to own this shop. He always gave a great haircut and I was pleased Rick stayed on after Marckhard purchased the store. Apparently, the new owner fired Rick Motta and I can only assume he was jealous of his abilities and didn't want to be reminded of the inferiority of Mackhard to Rick's former shop. There are other barber shops in Naperville with better service and owners who would not fire someone with 50 years of satisfying customers. Please try out other shops as Mackhard does not deserve your support. read more
