I've been in the area since this was Mr. Movies, never stopped in because I don't eat fish, I've always driven by and saw that they also have chicken and shrimp which I do like but if it's a fish and chips joint they're known for, I never made an attempt. I was stopping home for lunch and my BF suggested fish n chips randomly, so I stopped here as it's convenient and has been around for a long time and I've heard good things. He got the traditional fish n chips, the fish was pretty generous according to him, I will say everything was fresh, had a light flaky breading and the freshness was there, however everything is pretty under seasoned, decent but could be so much better with some seasoning aside from a dash of salt. My biggest complaint and (wtf?) was they didn't pack the food in actual togo boxes, just plopped on top of each other in just an open paper boat put into a paper bag. In all my years of working in restaurants, eating out or doing takeout several times a week, I've never seen a restaurant throw a meal in the bag without an actual closed Togo box outside from fast food but even at McDonalds they have their own containers for each item. The sauces that were intact were maybe 1/3rd full and the malt vinegar spilled over both our meals. It was still hot because I only live a few blocks away. The prices are very reasonable and the staff was very friendly. I'd probably be back to maybe try the shrimp tacos and dine in. Minus one star for the poor packing and malt vinegar all over the bag and barely filled sauces, and bland batter but still 4/5 for clean place, friendly staff, fair prices and fresh food. Haven't been back in couple of years. In the past their fries had been kind of soggy. This time around the fries were not so soggy but not the crispiest either. I got the Cod fish($4.75 for half serving, which is just one fillet) since it was the best deal and not as fishy as walleye($6.00 for half). The Halibut is the best fish on the menu but costs a wopping $9 for one fillet!!! The main reason I don't come here very often is the high price$$$ for the small portions. If you want proper size to cost ratio and some excellent fish and chips try out Anchor Fish and Chips. Macs has some alright Poutine. The gravy has nice flavor but a tad too salty and the curds have nice consistency. One thing you can look forward to is they always throw in one of their home made salt water taffies, which is very good. To be clear, this review is based on my recent and thus far sole visit to this modest establishment. Thus, I can't speak to the lack of consistency pointed out by some critics. Nor can I comment on negative experiences with takeout orders voiced by a few. Although I'll add that to me, fish & chips is among the least likely dishes to survive a trip home. The longer the delay between being prepared and eaten, the less appealing it may become. All the above out of the way, three of us dined here recently and came away favorably impressed. I chose the cod classic for $11.85. It was a generous basket of moist, flaky fish in a crunchy batter. One of us chose the chicken strips basket that he found quite tasty. The fries could have been more crisp but were flavorful and held up well when swiped through the tartar sauce. Speaking of their tartar sauce, the traditional blend was fine but their signature key lime/jalapeno variation was a highlight. They also have a savory rosemary infused malt vinegar that I splashed on generously. As we ate, the counter did a steady business handling a mix of dine in and takeout orders. Tables turned pretty quickly. So, possibly excepting for peak times one should not have to wait too long for a spot to open. I plan to return, probably soon. In time I may be able to offer an opinion on consistency of quantity and quality. read more

I'll be honest, Mac's isn't my favorite fish and chips joint in town, but it's still damn good and a really close second. I love that there are three fish selections to choose from-cod, walleye or halibut, all equally scrumptious- for your fried fish, not to mention clam strips and shrimp, AND shrimp tacos. Every piece of fresh seafood is cooked flawlessly, I've never had an order that was anything but perfection. Order up, food is prepared while you wait and served piping hot. Hand cut fries are delish. I'm so-so on the cheese curds, but it's nice to have the option if you're craving fried dairy. I've tried the shrimp tacos once-not bad, but I prefer grilled seafood on tacos. Neither location will win awards for decor or ambiance, but they're clean and well run. You're here for fish and chips, and that's what you'll get. During COVID, you're probably picking it up and digging in the bag, blowing on the filet to cool it down enough to take a bite. Batter is a little heavier than Anchor's but it's still great. I wrestle every visit between clam strips or fish, and then I struggle again because all three fish planks are yummy, but each unique in flavor. Solution, skip the fries, get a plank of fish and a side of clams. My husband usually gets two different fish planks, so I can always grab a bite of his. read more

Mac's St Paul location was a destination for my family when I was a kid and a quick bite for me during my teenage years. This is my first time to the Minneapolis location and the first time bringing my own family. I was confident that the fish wouldn't live up to the expectations of memories past, alas I was pleasantly surprised. I had the halibut and walleye classic combo. The halibut, although expensive, will keep me coming back. Tender, moist and not over cooked, with crispy fries and a lightly creamy, crisp, dare I say refreshing cup of slaw. I wasn't in love with the walleye but he portion was ok and again it wasn't greasy. The cod on the other hand that I sampled was flaky and fresh and I think a bargain for a fraction of the price of the other fish offered. His place is tiny and the parking lot is comically small, difficult to maneuver with even one other car in it. I will be back but will probably take out instead of dine in. Oh and in the amount of time I have been away from Mac's they decided to start into the saltwater taffy business and a small complementary piece came with each meal. read more

I eat here for lunch! Really good food! I got the fish tacos (3). The fish is a good portion per taco, and the sauce they use is pretty good. My only complaint about this place is it is a little pricy, $4.75 per taco for Cod. They had more experience options then that. So 3 tacos was $15 for a lunch. 2 tacos would not be enough. Fries are good (didn't come with tacos) they also sell jarritos soda! Food came out quick! Everything was fresh. Customer service was good. They also have a bathroom. The fish here is amazing. I had the walleye and it legit. I am a walleye fisherman and I can honestly say I'm mot sure if I can make walleye this good. The chicken strips were also tasty. This place also offers poutine, a Canadian dish, which they do a good job with. The cheese curds are absolutely amazing here. The coleslaw is also very solid if you enjoy coleslaw. Mac's is a specialty Fish, Chips and Strips house. You can take out or eat in. Their menu includes Halibut, Cod, Walleye, Shrimp, Clams and Chicken. It also has a selection of wines,beers and soft drinks. Home made salt water taffy as well. My Cod was lightly battered and very good size (4oz.). Very tasty. The fries are cut on location and "twice fried" to bring out that good, wonderful flavor. I found the cabbage coleslaw to be mild, with a good balance between sweet and sour. I was very pleasantly surprised to find such an excellent fish and chips place tucked away in a small corner of Minneapolis. Parking was easy on the street but they do have a small parking lot. I had the cod and my wife had the halibut strip. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars rather than 5 is that mine was slightly under cooked. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. This place falls at a 3 star rating for me.. on google I read reviews from people saying this is better than Anchor Fish n Chips in NE Minneapolis. Well in my opinion, they are flat out wrong. Is Macs awful? No. from from that. The fish tastes super fresh and the breading is light and crispy. Where they fall short is their pick up option. You get home and you have to broil your strips/fish to get rid of the grease and sogginess. Back to the breading. It's light and golden and you can tell they use fresh fryer oil. Evenly cooked. However, again they must not be shaking off that extra grease. Also, I find the breading to be somewhat flavorless. You can't eat it as is. You gotta dip your fish in the house made tartar sauce. Side note, sauce is good, but again no where near as good as anchor. They allow you to self serve yourself when it comes to tartar sauce which is nice and it doesn't cost extra.. also, they have a key lime jalapeño tartar available as well. It's not my cup of tea but I can see where someone could like this. All in all, Macs offers an incredible value, fish options (cod, walleye or halibut) chicken strips, poutine (I lived in Canada for several months and this is the first time I've had poutine that comes close to what I had there.) There are cheese curds too and these are pretty legit. Would I come back to macs? Only if they found a way to cut down on these grease, improved take out, and spiced up their breading. Wow this now my go to for excellent fish n chips without having to travel across town for a questionable comparison. Right up there with the best in most cities, the fish was flaky and juicy, the breading light and crispy. I had the cod which came with fries (skin on and kinda like the state fair). Fish n fries as we know don't ride well and are best eaten on site within minutes. But these will stand the test of time in the car if one follows the directions on the bag (leave it open and reheat per the instructions). Also got the clam strips which were crunchy, clam-y and good. A taste of the ocean! Macs makes a great tarter sauce and another sauce which is good for dipping everything including the fries. I'm not a fan of malt vinegar on fish unless I'm in the UK (sorry to be a snob but it's kinda of a must over there - part of the overall experience on proper chips). I've been to Mac's at least 6 times and each time the boys' workin were super friendly and efficient. It costs nothing to be nice and I like to acknowledge hard working staff who still make that extra effort in return. Mac's also has a St Paul location on Larpenteur. This is my first time at this location. And I wanted to take a chance on this place on account of them being a fish and chips restaurant, which are not too many located in Minnesota. But, yet it was really a smart choice as they make everything fresh, and the fish actually has that cod taste without it smelling to fishy at all. I walked in and got the one piece cod combo with fries and coleslaw. It was actually the right price, and it is really enough to keep one person satisfied without any aftereffects like other restaurants. I think it would be fun to go back and try their fish tacos, or even have some of their world famous taffy as well. read more

They always taste stale and burned and have no potato flavor. Please, Mac's, can't you do better on the chips part of fish&chips?? Not asking for anything fancy, just something decent. When Mac's opened in our neighborhood we were excited and optimistic. Let's face it. In the landlocked Midwest it's difficult to find fish that is fresh and reasonably priced. After picking up takeout on two different occasions we will not return. On a recent trip we ordered clams and chips and halibut and chips. The clam order had more French fries than clams. The clams were deep fried and had a panko breading which masked the delicate flavor of the clams. Fries were greasy and did not taste fresh. I've been here a handful of times over the last few years, and was a little disappointed on my most recent visit. The food took a really long time. I do appreciate how fresh everything is, and I'm willing to wait for quality, but at the end of the day it's fast casual. And should be relatively fast. It was also a little greasier than I remember it being on previous visits. My meal was so heavy that I didn't make it through the entire thing - a rarity for me. Parking can be a little dicey, but I like the dining area here. It's nice to sit in and enjoy your meal with an adult beverage, some malt vinegar, and house made (!) tartar sauce. You even get a little nibble of dessert with your dinner - a couple pieces of saltwater taffy. It's a totally sweet gesture, but I find it always sticks to the waxed paper it's wrapped in and then I'm eating paper. Maybe I'm just crabby. We have loved going to Mac's ever since they opened (and at the State Fair before that). We're done. Nobody answers the phone. Okay, you can order online and do curbside pickup. Explicit instructions tell you come only at the time given - not before then, and please be on time. Tell them what vehicle you're driving and put on your hazards so that they can find you. Sounds great. Drove up to find six other cars with their hazards in and a restaurant full of people. Ten minutes after my pickup time, I went inside to find out what was going on. One person working hard at the register, one person working hard at the fryer, one person taking orders to people waiting in line, and two people standing around doing nothing. Asked about the curbside pickup, they pointed to a pile of orders sitting on the counter getting cold. Heard a few other customers who were angrily asking about their curbside orders as well. So... not so much curbside pickup at all. Free-for-all at the tartar sauce and ketchup station with ungloved, unmasked people helping themselves and no sanitizer in sight. That's fine when there isn't a pandemic raging, but come on. So... fifteen minutes after the food should've been taken to my car, and $35 later, we were treated to lukewarm fish. No apologies from the staff, and no explanation as to why the two people standing around couldn't be doing what their website said they were going to do. My patience is extremely high for restaurants doing their best during these times. But they're not even trying. Lost a customer today. read more

By far the best fish and chips in the metro, and I have tried a lot of places (including Anchor). The batter is perfect and the fish is fresh and silky. I go back and forth between cod and halibut, both delicious. I admit a strong preference for delicate white fish, so if you are looking for a different or stronger fish, this isn't your place. They also have walleye, but like I said, I prefer the other two fish. The fries are skin-on and no big deal, but also tasty. It's the spot-on genius batter that makes this place special. Light, crunchy, and perfect for accompanying the fish. Irish and British folks that are longing for a chipper, look no further. The hubby is Irish and he says this place is the closest thing to a real chipper he has found here. I agree. Final note, we go to Roseville location and seating is limited. Their indoor seating is too small to space folks out, so they set up seating in the parking lot. Went here for the first time Saturday 10/2. Had the walleye meal. My daughter who doesn't really like seafood said she would have the walleye again. The batter is fantastic! Very light and crispy. We also had some clams and they were so flavorful and perfectly cooked. Not rubbery and overcooked like some places serve. Unfortunately the rest of meal leaves some to be desired - the fries were dark brown and soggy and tasted funky - threw them away. Finally, I have found that place in Mac's Fish & Chips Minneapolis location. I used the online ordering and for $1 more I swapped out fried cheese curds for the fries. I'm very happy I went with the #6 option and ordered the two pieces of fish crispy along with extra tartar sauce. The coleslaw was a little on the dry side, but I prefer that over too much dressing. When I picked up my order I immediately noticed the friendliness of the hard working employees. Overall, the price I paid was very reasonable and the food and service exceptional.
