My husband and I passed this shop when we arrived in P-town on Monday and made a mental note that we wanted to stop in on Tuesday. Here's the back story: my husband has wanted a hat the way I've wanted a private dinner invitation from Jake Gyllenhaal for as long as I've known him. We see a hat, he tries it on, it's not quite right and on and in it's gone. Tuesday we walk into this adorable hat shop in the middle of P-town and are greeted by an even more adorable proprietor. My husband puts a hat on his head - nope. A second hat - nope. Third hat - yep. Proprietor says, "I could show you other hats but I'm not going to. That one's perfect for you." YEARS of looking. 5 minutes in Mad as a Hatter and my husband has the best hat. Five stars seems hardly adequate praise. read more

I recently purchased a hat for almost $50. After the sale was completed, I was told that I did NOT have the option of receiving a paper receipt. I was given the "choice" to provide my phone number or e-mail to have my recipe sent to me. I am not sure if this shady and unethical practice is an effort to save printing/paper cost for the business, an environmental thing or what. Nonetheless it is ridiculous. At the very least the customer should be informed that they cannot receive a printed record of their transaction BEFORE the purchase is completed. The idea of not providing a paper receipt for a purchase is unprofessional and not consistent with good accounting records. I will not purchase another item at Mad Hatter again. Potential customers should be aware of this shady practice and as well as the credit card companies and the IRS. read more

I'm only seeing negative comments after coming to this shop and purchasing a hat - the woman beind the counter was lovely! She was very, very patient with the woman in front of me in line, and was very helpful to me when I was curious about a hat in their window (it's an AWESOME yellow felt hat!)! She was able to help me with information on wearing the hat properly, details about caring for it, and even helped with the size of it by putting some felt lining within the hat's lining! I really felt like she knew what she was talking about and cared that I enjoy the wear of the hat! I also purchased some single feathers, and she arranged them very nicely within the hat's band. Lovely experience, and I believe the prices are reasonable for the area, and the quality of the hats. They do have some more versatile hats for those who are just looking for the day/beach, but also a good selection for someone looking for something different/unexpected! I love my hat! Should be named "Cranky Hat Guy". This store has a lot going for it - a nice selection of stylish hats for all occasions and seasons, moderately priced - but one HUGE negative: the cranky guy behind the counter. I have visited the store twice over the course of 2 years and both times I've tried to politely engage the man (who I believe is the owner) in conversation. FORGET IT. To him, every question or compliment gets turned into some kind of twisted negative remark. Unlike the other reviewer who stomped out, though, I still bought a hat. read more

About 30 minuted ago, I just left this guys store with the full intent to buy a hat. While trying on various hats he rudely told us to put the hats away because he said other customers wanted to view them and that we were making a mess. When I mentioned I was interested in buying one of the hats and noted I was a paying customer too he immediately went mad as a hatter and said he did not want my money and yelled at me to leave. Do not come here and keep this guy in business. Vote with with your time and money and stay away. The selection was a little spare, but it is March-- the stock ranged from church-lady hats to cute wool cloches, to some really dapper boyish hats. The guy who owns the place makes the church-lady hats himself and does custom millinery-- something you don't see too often. But it was blah and pricy otherwise. read more

Well, they have hats. Pricey, pricey hats, but what else would you expect from a store in P-Town? The only baseball caps this place carries are plain ones in every possible color imaginable. They have all those fancy fuddyduddy lady beach hats with flowers on them. The hats for the gentlemen are a little more modern. They have cadet style caps, newboy caps and very daper gentlemen hats. My friend bought one of their linen cadet hats that cost about $40. The cleaning instructions said not to wash or dry clean and when we asked the guy that worked there he was also unsure of how to care for it. I didn't really consider that to be a big deal because its a hat and really, how often do you wash hats? The guy that worked there was really nice and appreciated his honesty in caring for the hat. Unfortunately, I couldn't really find anything in there that I liked for myself. Too expensive and too Jane Austen for my tastes. read more

Well, now, this is one talented milliner. Strolled into the shop during my annual summer visit to P-town and found a very wide variety of hats for women and men. Played it safe and selected a new straw hat with brim and cord from Scala, a reputable and trusted hat manufacturer, from whom I've purchased six or seven other summer hats. Then, I turned around and voila! How could I have missed the most wonderful selection of outrageous and beautifully designed creations? Somehow, I marched right into the store, right past them and then, noticed them out of the corner of my eye. Well, let me say that I dropped over $300 very happily on two exquisite and flamboyant wool felt hats with fabulous trompe l'oeuil 'ribbons' -- one with a bunch of grapes and the other with an outrageous schlock of black/green flip flop feathers that will coordinate very nicely with my black sheared mink winter coat. Watch for me wearing my hat in my TT convertible! Thank you for sharing your talent and verve with the public. I look forward to shopping at your store again! read more

This is my first review on Yelp and really is the primary reason that I decided to join. People don't normally upset me easily but the man who worked at the cash wrap in this store was probably the rudest person I have ever encountered. Talk about "pretty woman" style: he completely judged us when we were in the store. We weren't poking fun but were rather having a good time deciding on a hat when he proclaimed that his store was too fancy for us and that we clearly weren't going to buy any hats (in reality one of my friends was actually just about to buy one for her boyfriend..) by reading the other reviews it has become apparent that his sole goal in life is to offend people. I don't understand how the place stays in business. Pretty small variety to top it off. Won't step foot in there again. read more

Eh, no thanks. Six of us were in the store and, honestly, went there specifically to purchase hats. We had full intentions of spending money in the store. Unfortunately, we failed to see the "No photographs" signs. I had on the hat I was going to purchase and my buddy went to take a picture of me in the hat when, voila!, "No photograph in the store, can't you read the signs!" was barked out by the old gentleman working at the front desk. Literally, told us to get out and that "You can't take pictures in a fancy store." We told him that he apparently didn't need our $25. He told us, literally, that "You're full of sh**" and to get out of the store. He was visibly riled up. We left. Without a hat. And with the money still in our pockets. No thanks. I love hats! As my partner was picking out a hat for our cruise, I made the mistake of taking a picture of a hat on a wall. I didn't see the "no photos" sign. The cranky old man at the counter told me if I wanted to take photos I needed to go to a photography shop. I commented that he seemed a bit grumpy. He then told me I had no sense of humor. When I signaled to my partner that we needed to go, he screamed in this dramatic voice, "get out, get out of my store!" and he referred to us as "stupid" in front of his other customers. There were a few cute hats, nothing spectacular, but the star of the shop is the hatter who is CLEARLY MAD and could benefit from a daily SSRI. read more

Visited this store over Thanksgiving weekend as I am struggling with a hair loss disease that has just caught me in a panic. Peter was very helpful. He carries some standard labels that I have purchased for years as well as some nice high end pieces. His own creations were interesting, but as I am new to this challenge of wearing hats all of the time, I am a slow adopter. I purchased a wool cloche that is very striking that has garnered positive comments from many friends as well as strangers which has made this transition less painful for me. Nice to be able to go into a store like this and try them on at my own pace. Peter comments about how to wear the hats were very helpful as I am a novice! We are about 2 hours from home and will certainly check this out on a regular basis. read more

I really liked this store. Visited during Women's Week in October. At our first visit there was a cranky guy behind the counter who wasn't great but I wasn't ready to buy anyway. The second visit was great. The guy behind the counter (who was younger than the previous guy) talked knowledgeably about the hats and made suggestions to me - and didn't have any problem with a woman buying men's fedoras. It was very comfortable which means a lot when you don't meet gender norms. Bought two hats and will visit again. Plus, where I live, in RI, there aren't really hat stores except for baseball hats and I loved the chance to visit a store with some real variety. read more

I don't know if others had bad timing or I had good timing, but 4 of us went in to Mad As A Hatter this weekend and had a great experience. Not only was the proprietor (Peter) very friendly, but he was quite helpful as well without ever being salesy. For each hat we picked up, he gave us tips on how best to wear it - angle, front to back, side to side, size, etc. He told us to judge for ourselves based on the looks on our own faces, which hats were best for us. We walked in just to look and walked out with 6 hats between the 4 of us. One of them was a beautiful hat my wife purchased that Peter had made himself. The selection was a little sparse, but given that most of the other shops won't even be opening until sometime in May, I can't complain. The selection was still almost as good as any Goorin Brothers at about half the price. Based on the experience we had, I would definitely recommend Mad As A Hatter. read more

We purchased and hat that my wife fell in love with and we will undoubtedly come back to store again when we return to Provincetown. I suspect that the people who had written that they had a bad experience in the store may have caused the bad experience themselves given the tone of their reviews. Went there with a friend and our daughters. I had a $40 hat in my hand to buy and was going to buy a hat for my daughter when the old man behind the counter bawled me out for having kids try on hats, I'm sorry it's a hat store isn't that what you do? Needless to say put the hat back and left. I will never go there again or recommend it to anyone unless they want to go to a store where they are very RUDE and apparently don't care if they make a sale or not! I purchased my Easter hat from Mad as a Hatter. The following year I ordered my Easter hat via mail (I live in Florida). Peter took a swatch from my dress and made a BEAUTIFUL hat creation. The hats are pricey, but they are high quality and one of a kind designs. The following year I purchased my hat at a high end store in New Orleans - paid twice the price for a ho-hum hat. I had a positive experience in this shop last week-end as a random vacationer in Provincetown. I popped in while window shopping just to take a closer look at the gorgeous vintage-style flowered hats, and ended up trying on several of the simpler, plainer sun hats to replace my old one. The sales woman was extremely patient with my dithering (I spent a good 15 minutes trying to decide between two colors of the same style) and gave me an honest opinion when asked, but otherwise didn't hover, which I appreciated. There was a decent variety of women's hats given the size of the shop, which was small. (There were men's hats as well, but I wasn't really looking at them.) The hat I chose probably could have been found online for slightly less, but wasn't outrageously priced considering it was P-town during tourist season. I didn't experience any of the rudeness from the sales woman that others described. She wasn't incessantly chatty or chirpingly cheerful, but that's actually a plus in my book as I dislike being fluttered over while I'm shopping. She was approachable and helpful when I did have questions, and efficient and professional when I was ready to pay. read more
