I was present and witnessed the alarming incident involving my friend, Anastasiya, at the bar on 11/12/2023. Following a concert at Melrose Ballroom, our friends and I went to have more fun at Mad Donkey, but inexplicably, the bartender not only upset Anastasiya but also subjected her to violence, as evident in the attached files. Anastasiya was forcefully expelled from the bar and suffered severe injuries, including extensive bleeding when her hand, when holding a glass of beer, was forcefully slammed against the wall by that same bartender. Also, it is the responsibility of security, not the bartender, to remove customers from the establishment, indicating that the bartender wanted to harm her. This is outrageous! Just by looking at his face you can see how intoxicated and unstable he was. read more

if there is any bar that doesn't rely on pretension, it's Mad Donkey. One of the many staples in the constantly evolving Astoria nightlife scene, they've remained steadfast in keeping the drinks affordable while emphasizing the fun. I've had a lot of the latter over the years; cheap drinks and good company can never be emphasized enough. Before times of COVID, I enjoyed late nights of craft beer and sports often while standing in a pile of peanut shells. I'd eventually make my own pile, and would banter with the bartenders who would eventually hook me up with their signature fishbowl cocktail, the infamous donkey bowl. It was overly sweet, incredibly potent, and a delight watching others groan to finish it. The food was never much to fawn over, but it did the job for any drunkard's appetite. Their 50 cent wing special was a popular item, but the burger was my go-to. Stacked with crispy bacon, cheese, and a fried egg, it wasn't the kind of burger that one would expect out of a place like this. The cheese fries were junktastic with its nacho cheese, bacon, and sprinkles of actual shredded cheese. The stuff was far from fancy, but they were right for the time. They were closed for much of the pandemic, only reopening in the last couple of months during the fall. Clearly, a lot has changed, but I still hope they continue to fight on and be a part of the neighborhood fabric for years to come. read more

Don't trust reviews of dive bars by people who don't like dive bars. They're not for everyone...but they're for me. I was in Queens for four nights and discovered the Mad Monkey on my third. I wish I had found it on my first. It's an awesome place. It is kinda like Cheers with the atmosphere but in a dive bar. On my second night, people knew my name. Hell, someone knew my name on my first night as soon as I walked in. And you don't sit at this bar without getting into a conversation. I talked to tourists from Japan and Canada on my second night. Jeanette, the bartender is an extraordinarily nice person. She's very friendly and knows her regulars. I didn't have the chance to eat here but I will next time. I'm very intrigued by the Frito Pie (not new to me) and its wings. Next time I'm in Queens, I'm staying near this neighborhood so I can visit Mad Donkey. I promised Jeanette I'd be back. read more

Mad Donkey was one of the worst experiences I have ever had. I went there this past Saturday around 9:30pm to grab a drink or two. What ended up happening while I was having my first drink, I realized the BARTENDER WAS TAKING PICTURES OF ME ON HIS PHONE WITHOUT MY CONSENT. Not only is this a violation of privacy, it is creepy. It made me feel very UNCOMFORTABLE. When I called him out on his behavior. He told me to stop drinking and get out immediately. He even got the security guard to tell me to leave. Decided to venture out a little farther than my usual walk around the neighborhood. Checked this place out since I saw some of my fellow Yelp friends had visited this establishment before. No regrets. MJ was the bartender for the afternoon/night (came on a Sunday afternoon to watch Rangers game, he said he's there Tues/Thurs/Sun afternoons). He was super friendly, funny, tried to engage with everyone in conversation. You could definitely tell that some of the people that visited were frequent customers. Bartender knew everyone by first name. By the end of the night, we felt like were part of the crew. There were so many great conversations. A "LMAO" kinda time. Be prepared that some crazy things may happen here. But it's all out of fun and for good times and laughs! The drink prices were very reasonable. $6 for Stella, $7 for Blue Moon. I also got the Mac and Cheese Bites ($7). Everything was really good. They offer free peanuts that you're encouraged to drop the scraps onto the floor (I felt weird throwing them onto the floor but I was being frowned on for building scraps on the bar top LOL). Came here with a ticket from the Queens Beer Book. From the outside, this bar looks like a typical Irish Pub. On the inside, this place screams dive bar. When I took a seat at the bar, the bartender gave me a plate of shelled peanuts to snack on. The menu was very extensive and it seemed like the place probably gets packed and rowdy on a Friday or Saturday night. Being that it was a chilly autumn day, the first drink I ordered was the Brooklyn Post Road Pumpkin Ale with a pumpkin spiced rim. I'm not the biggest fan of pumpkin flavored things, but this beer was delicious! After the beer, I got a little bit hungry and ordered the homestyle chicken tenders. These tenders were freakin' huge! I definitely couldn't finish them and had to take them to go. They came out of the kitchen piping hot with a side of fries. They were great. After my attempt at finishing my food, I figured I had room left to order one more drink. What caught my eye on the menu was the Drunken Cherries, which are cherries soaked in Bacardi 151. You get 2 for $6. Man, did those have a bite to them! It's basically a cherry filled with a tiny shot of 151. Don't underestimate them! Yelp coming to the rescue again! Was in LIC visiting some friends at their new apartment, and I wasn't well versed with the bar scene in the area. Yet, as it happens, people asked me where to go. So I suggested we come to Mad Donkey after a very quick Yelp search. This place is a diamond in the rough. It's a very cool, divey bar. When we came they were singing karaoke, it was cold as hell outside but it was cozy as could be indoors. Drink prices were fair, and the music they sang was actually pretty good. Even the singers weren't bad. This is definitely a locals spot and makes me wish I moved back home to Brooklyn for some of the neighborhood vibes that you don't get in midtown, but that's besides the point. I have been to Mad Donkey three times. During my first two visits, their gas was not working so I held off reviewing until I had both drank and eaten here. The bar is one of those hard to still find old time bars where you get free peanuts and are encouraged to throw the shells on the floor. The tap beer is crispy and cold, the atmosphere is chill, there are large screen TV's showing different sporting events throughout the day and the bar tenders, especially Paddy, make sure you feel right at home! I ordered a medium rare hamburger with onions and cheddar cheese. It comes with lettuce, tomato, cole slaw and fries. I requested double cole slaw instead of the fries (I was trying to keep my calorie count below 8,000 :-) and they were happy to accommodate me. The burger was thick and cooked right to order. I thought the meat was a bit dry, the bun pretty standard and would have liked more cheese and onions on it, but it was still worth ordering and went well with the beer and peaunts. This is a bar I would frequent more regularly if I lived in Queens and one that I will definitely come back to again. Welcoming beat up bar centers the place, and the outstanding bartenders worked the crowd into a frenzy with shots flying everywhere. Free shots - what is not to like! Jamesons? Yes, I'll have another! Bartenders also downing shot after shot right along with us. Free bowls of peanuts on the bar to help soak up the alcohol in our stomachs too. For some reason I feel like this place is always a picker upper. Why you ask? So happens I always end up here after along week at work, or troubling thoughts in my head keeping my spirits down. The staff will dump your shells on the floor for you if you don't first lol Their menu is killer! Literally! They have the usual bar menu but you can order in tower options. Meaning you get three plates in special holder. Everything is greasy goodness from onion rings to French fries. I've had the donkey mess which is a combination of all the appetizers all on top of each other on one giant bowl (chili, burger, hot dog, tater tots, and so fourth). It's meant to be eaten by two or three people. But if you can wolf it down on your own then you get your picture on the wall. They also have fishbowls for $30 or so. Again, meant to be shared by two but if you finish on your own picture on the wall. Saturday's they have a dj and sometimes Friday's. They tend to have specials all week long. The owner tommy is super nice and always has good conversation to be had. The rest of his employees are always cheerful and attentive with patrons. You get a really good vibe here when coming in. Yes, I bought a $10 "all you can drink" wristband here on a Wednesday night, yes I try to bring everyone I can here - no, I'm not a 'regular' as I'm not usually in this part of Astoria and yes, there was a time when summer 2012 I did spend a lot of time here and I'm sure their owner Patsy might remember me fondly (my gosh are their rum soaked cherries an amazing, sweet slice of heaven!). So half way down my Sam Adams Octoberfest I told my boyfriend he could finish it. As Ingrid S. noted, we generally share everything, I mean - sharing is caring RIGHT?! So in the back it's waitress service and thus I ordered a Blue Moon. This was our nightcap. I was only getting 1 beer, the boy was (at that point) enjoying my half-beer and ready to PURCHASE HIS OWN BEER and my friend and I were looking over their food menu to share something between our group. After we placed our Blue Moon and bacon cheese fries order the bartender came over to personally pay us a visit and to literally BERATE me in front of the back. He yelled at me as if I were a child and he called me a THIEF. My boyfriend totally understood that the bartender was RIGHT and I should have not apparently shared my beer or ordered one until I washed mine down, but my problem lies with his DELIVERY and overall treatment. A simple "don't do that again" would have sufficed plenty. I LOVED this bar. See my first review of this place, it's oozing with enthusiasm, joy and radiates all the good things that Mad Donkey Bar has to offer. I was treated like a common thief, my friends and boyfriend were humiliated and mortified. A friendly easy going staff that like to party and do shots along with you. I made two mistakes when I came in here: 1. I was way too sober and 2. I came here looking for food instead of looking to get drunk I was drawn to this place by the lure of free peanuts. What was put in front of me almost made me recoil in horror. Was it molten lava on a plate? No it was a burrito drowning in some kind of chili sauce. This is not food for sober people. Somewhere out there, a real Mexican chef is crying. Also a disaster, were the fries. I guess the concept of removing excess oil from the fries didn't seem too appealing to them. Stuff I tried: - Duvel - good old Belgian beer. - Flying Dog "In Heat" - smooth flavor with a hint of sweetness. I think I found my favorite beer! - Magic Hat #9 - crisp and dry, yet slightly sweet. This place is fantastic! I'm a frequent visitor and the bartenders and servers I've met so far are always super friendly. I did try the fishbowl and it was delicious plus they don't hesitate on the alcohol. The food is good and they serve it quick. It's a very chill space so I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a regular bar where he/she can relax, eat and drink. Plus free peanuts where you can toss the shells on the floor! read more
