One of many perfectly blended teas from mad hat

Best tea shop you'll ever go to. Perfect blends of virtually anything you can imagine. Go check it out; you'll never look at tea the same again. Owner kind of reminds you of the mad hatter himself. Casual, laid back vibes w/ view of the bridge.

Our tea haul today. All about the Mate!

We have always enjoyed this tea shop. Fist time we visited the new location. Nice music, amazing tea and great conversations.

Mad Hat Tea is our no-doubt local spot to get outstanding loose teas. The Mad Coconut in particular is a fantastic black tea with substantial but not overpowering coconut in it (you can even see tiny drops of coconut oil shimmering on the surface of your cup of tea, like little stars). It's my favorite tea by a long shot right now. And the labels on all of the tea varieties are really fun to look at. Going into Mad Hat Tea is like going into a time machine, though I can't quite put my finger on which decade it's in; there are elements of 60s, 70s and 80s for sure. The decor is somewhat like a ramshackle basement, and you could easily imagine a wide range of activities taking place here, perhaps a palm reading or some knitting, or a game of Dungeons and Dragons, or a deep conversation about Pink Floyd or H.P. Lovecraft. I say this all with affection. Service has always been pretty easy going and a little detached. This isn't a place to come when you're in a hurry.

Got the green lemon and ginseng oolong tea!

My friend and I decided to check this place out on a whim. It has a bohemian ambiance to it. This place has a very wide selection of teas. The place is dimly lighted and seems like an nice place to relax with a cup of tea. Each area is sectioned off from the kinds of tea they offer like black, oolong, green, white, etc. I was overwhelmed at how many different kinds of tea there was! I liked that there was a section of "ailment" teas for when you have a cold, flu, digestion issues, anxiety, "woman" problems, and more! Some of the names were pretty hilarious too! (ex. anxie"tea") I really enjoy green tea, so I got the green lemon and gingseng oolong tea. The green lemon tastes straight up like fruity pebbles which is very off-putting. The oolong was much better. The quality of these teas are decent. I do enjoy the fact that they offer smaller packets so that you can try out the many kinds of tea they offer. I would probably visit this place again if I'm ever in downtown Tacoma due vast selection of tea they have.

Mad Hat is the epitome of what I expect from a tea shop. It's funky, quirky, and comfortable. The atmosphere is laid back and it almost feels like you've walked into someone's home. There is seating at the front of the store, along with bar seating...as well as a comfy living room type setup in the back; stocked with books and games for you to enjoy. They offer a wide selection of teas, and for $2.50/pot, you could spend tons of time sampling a bunch of flavors without breaking the bank. (There are plenty of loose tea options to buy and take home with you too). Service was great and there was no pressure to guzzle down your tea and order more (though, I definitely did that). I also appreciated their "no cellphone use" (please) signs. How refreshing for an establishment to ask you to disconnect and just enjoy yourself! Definitely a great place to slow down or kill some time.

Dark, quiet, relaxed atmosphere to sip deliciously strange teas.

If you like Tea then you'll love the Mad Hat Tea Company. They serve and sell all things TEA! Great location in downtown Tacoma. It is a nice change from all the coffee shops, like Seattle based Starbucks!

Reading & enjoying licorice wonderland tea, as the Strokes music plays in the background. The tea is so tasty-I dont add sweet.

This place is awesome!!! There is a huge array of tea flavors to choose from. Not to mention, affordable. You can get your tea to go, or hangout and sit at the bar, lounge, or one of their many other tables. The place is decorated with art and is extremely cozy and hip!! There are books available to read and games to play. Music plays by the tables by the entrance. You can also buy a bag of your favorite loose tea to take home or give as gift to another tea lover. Near the trolly and bus lines.

I know they've been hiding out on 6th avenue for quite a long time, but parking is a struggle most days and if you're in a hurry, this may not be the best place to stop. It's more of a local watering hole where the neighborhood folks congregate for their morning coffee and pastries but if you get the time and don't mind the parking situation, this cafe is worth the trip! Small batches of delicious roasted coffees paired with some scrumptious bakery items to enjoy while you relax in their large but cozy space. The staff is super friendly, and you can sit and people watch or make yourself a temporary workspace. They are perfect for the whole group or just the two of you. When we walked in, I felt like I had been teleported to Ballard or Greenwood up in Seattle. At least that's the vibe that I felt when we were there. It doesn't quite fit the Tacoma aesthetic but that's just one more thing that sets them apart from other Tacoma coffee shops. If you're in Tacoma, skip the big corporate coffer monger and go try something that you've never tried before. Bluebeard is a good place to start! Thanks for reading. Cheers!

The employees here are really nice, and the coffee beans are some of the most vibrant and packed with flavor (my preference) due to the experimental techniques used and their careful sourcing.
