Today was my first visit to Mad Men Barbershop . Because my Barber retired I have been on the search for a good cut , good atmosphere and good music. I booked an online appointment with Dexter for The Gentleman which is cut , lineup, razor neck shave, shampoo, hot facial towel and scalp massage. Dexter was very professional focused on his cut, some chat , he did an amazing job, Great cut relaxing listening to Sinatra and many other crooners. The entire experience was well worth making the time to visit Mad Men. I would highly recommend Dexter and he was aware I am officiating a wedding this weekend and another reason I booked The Gentleman is because on 10/1 I turn 60 so is was an early birthday present to myself . Came hear asking to speak to someone about a charitable donation for an event at my place of work for under-resourced kids and was told no one could talk to me about that and someone would contact me. After reading past reviews and seeing many terrible responses to other reviews. I felt the need to leave my experience. I ended up placing a reservation online. I had a gift card, so this was the only reason I wanted to try this place. After placing a reservation online, I arrived for my appointment. Unfortunately, I had put a buzz cut but wanted a certain type of hairstyle that I didn't see in the drop-down box. After explaining to them that I messed up the receptionist got extremely flustered and gained an attitude. I asked if they could do a certain type of hairstyle in which the sides were shorter than the top. Nothing crazy. She insisted we don't have extra time for that. After I finished explaining the hairstyle, she kept telling me "We can't do that and when I kept asking is there something similar, she explained to me that there is only one kind of fade (High fade). I totally understand that I messed up but no need to be rude. After she said that I got this little voice in my head telling me to leave. Instead, my barber came over and assured me that he knew what I was talking about and that he could help. I will say I have no complaints during the haircut but unfortunately it was just a terrible cut. Uneven, patches sticking up and misaligned. I would love to give this place another chance but unfortunately, I've seen too many combative responses on other reviews. So I came here on recommendation, I had one of the best haircuts I've ever had by Nicole a couple months ago. She took her time to figure out what I was looking for, clearly had experience cutting hair with scissors as well as clippers and did a really nice razor shave of my back neck line. I was very impressed. I needed to get my haircut before a trip and I called and Nicole was not in the day I happened to be in the area and I decided to take the risk thinking well maybe all of their staff are awesome, wow was I wrong. I arrived and pulled into the parking lot to see the receptionist I've seen before and another person smoking cigarettes in front of the door. When I got out of my car they both went inside. I was a little disappointed to see the guy smoking right before hand was going to cut my hair right after. Was kind of hoping he might wash his hands first, but nope. The haircut went ok to start, I typically get a general trim and a hard part on the top. Since my hair was still looking pretty good from my last cut and I wasn't really doing anything crazy I figured again what could go wrong? Ugh... So he basically took a clipper and buzzed around my head. He didn't really use scissors at all, I think he cut a couple pieces off the top and then called it a day. He messed up my hard part and I had to ask him to fix it. At first it was so thin I couldn't see it and it was not straight. At this point he could tell I wasn't happy and he tried using a blow dryer to fix the top that he didn't bother to cut and slathered a ton of product on my head even though I told him I didn't really use much day to day. I walked out thinking well maybe it will look ok after I wash the grease out of my hair. A few days went by and I was struggling with getting my hair ready in the morning. I'm a get up and go kind of guy and don't sit in front of the mirror brushing and blow drying my hair. It looks like I didn't get a haircut, it is messy and unkempt. I was there on Friday and I called on the following Wed to tell them about my experience. The receptionist Gina basically said that it was my fault because I didn't say anything when I left and that I should have called right away and because it had been over a week that there was nothing they could do because my hair had already grown out. Now I'm thinking if my hair had grown out in 5 days I should probabaly start getting cuts every 3 days to stay ahead of that. I reluctantly made a follow up appointment and she said she would talk to owner for me. I called again a couple days later and the owner Angela started yelling at me over the phone. Apparently in her mind, they make sure to ask you how your haircut was on your way out so that if you say it was ok they can hold it against you later. And if by chance you didn't complain right away and told them it was ok on your way out, that in turn makes it ok that your haircut was terrible and absolves them of feeling responsible in any way to fix it. This seemes like a problem they have had many times and instead of addressing the issue with their staff or at least improving the situation for the person receiving the bad service they will throw you under the bus and keep your money. WORST! customer service I have ever experienced from a place in my life! I spoke with a woman by the name of Gina who was the epitome of rude. Now to be clear this was my first time here or actually in the parking lot. I booked my appointment online which in of itself is almost like filling out a college application and very hard to understand as it asks you what kind of haircut do you want. There is not a simple haircut and beard trim, so I just picked one thinking I'll book the appointment and just let them know what I want when I get there. So I get to my appointment 15 minutes early and call in the parking lot to check-in and let them know I was there. At this time is when this wonderful women by the name of Gina answered the phone and was just God awful. She almost made me feel like I had killed her pet because I picked a haircut that was a kids haircut and didn't specify that I needed a beard trim and began to tell me how I didn't specify what I needed and that the barber didn't have time to do that and I would need to reschedule. I tried to explain it was my first time to this place and I booked online and didn't completely understand what I was picking. This is when she became nasty in the tone of voice and basically told me that they will not bump someone to accommodate my innocent mishap with the online booking. I have never received such horrible customer service in my life! I would have expected her to try her best to fit me in. But instead was told to find a different barber. WOW is all I have to say! I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy if they are this rude to a first-time customer I couldn't even imagine how they treat their regulars. I will continue to use my regular barber I just tried this place cause I was in a pinch. I recommend anyone looking for a true barber that knows how to treat customers. Came here to get my first hair cut in about a year. my hair is long. my normal barber is in the city and charges $10 for a mens haircut. Figured i would go local. hair cut is $20 which is a little expensive but i figured its local so it saves me the drive and gas. Barber was snout to cut my hair then gets called to the front desk and told to charge me $30 because i have love hair. i coulda paid the $30 but i didn't want to not tip the barber because the surcharge would have come out of the barbers tip. i tip generously. Barber would have easily made a $10 tip off of me. long story short I'm on the way to my barber in the city for my $10 equal quality haircut. The red head messed up my sons hair the second cut he got from her in the past but i figured I'd give them a second chance. So much for second chances. The woman who works the front desk is extremely rude every time I've been there. Unfortunately i won't be back. Its pretty much been three strikes with this place. Hey guys so ... the negative reviews are spot on , the hair cut and the place itself it's cool , the problem is the person running the show and their website. I'm made an appointment on line ( which is a nightmare because not only do you need all your personal information you have to be specific what kind of hair cut do u want ) then I made a second appointment for my son and on the second one I specified it will be a little gentleman hair cut . I got my confirmation for both appointment , regular hair cut and the little gentlemen immediately on my email . All is good wright ? No when I got there I found out my appointment was canceled because I booked two appointment from one account and it is goes against their booking policy . They sand me and email at 10 am that day but it was sent to my junk folder so I never got it . The web site did not specify how to make multiple appointment , and if you have to enter your phone number why didn't any one call me or tex me so we could clarify the situation? The answer is they don't care because there is another person that will take your spot ( that is how busy this place is ) . The lady up front said that only one appointment per registered customer ( or email ) , I tried to explain that my son is 9 he does not use personal email yet and that if you looked at the booking and used common sense two different hair cuts where booked which means to persons are coming but no why would we take time and effort to call or text it is easier to cancel all together . Now to her defense she was able to take one of us in but still not right . This place is booming and there will be 10 people ready to take your place in line . My advice is do not use the website at all , if you want to make an appointment call or go there in person. I or any of my family members will not go back there because I don't like cocky attitude, I'm not saying you need to kiss my butt because I'm a customer but try to fix the situation ( she did not even offered to reschedule the cancelled appointment) . One of the most important things when I consider a place to get a haircut is the wait time. If it's more than a few minutes, I'd prefer to schedule an appointment. After going to this relatively mediocrely-reviewed shop for over a year, I asked to schedule an appointment so that I wouldn't have to wait 45 minutes on a Saturday for a haircut. I said any night this week, and any stylist would be fine. The receptionist's response: "I'm sorry, you have to have a history with a stylist to schedule." Ok -- I've been here multiple times -- anyone that I previously saw will be fine. "Sorry -- you have to have a history." What the hell is a "history" with someone that cuts my hair? I want a haircut -- not a relationship. Hell, I don't even want to interact -- just a haircut in silence. Nope -- they literally refused to schedule with anyone that was open during the week. Great Clips quality for Tricocci prices. Decided to give them a shot because of the reviews. Never again. Been to other places that offer way more for the same price or less. I went into Mad Men Barbershop asking for a 2 on the sides and a bald taper. I also asked for a cleanup on the top. Joey said he could do this no problem and assured me this was an easy task. However, I am extremely disappointed in the outcome. Both sides of my hairline are completely uneven. I had to come home and clean up my edges with my own clippers. He also decided to take as much off the top as he wanted without talking to me prior. When I asked him what he was doing he said he was just taking off the dead ends. I was in the area to visit family and we had family photos scheduled for the next day so I was searching for a place for a beard trim. My first stop was to another barbershop in the same strip but after walking in and waiting for about 10 minutes without anyone even acknowledging me I decided to walk over to Mad Men. I was greeted right away and only had to wait about 5 minutes before I was called back by Mike. The atmosphere was relaxed and Mike made me feel at home. We discussed what I wanted done and he got to work. Once he was finished I was happy to see that he had shaped my beard up beyond my expectations. I was impressed and so was the wife and her family. My son's haircut is terrible. He told them exactly what he wanted and they didn't seem to care. He had longer hair and now has a buzzcut. Sooooo bad. Just because he's fifteen doesn't mean he doesn't know what he likes. Don't go here if you want anything else then to be shaved! In response to Angela's comment: We were told on the phone that only the person getting the haircut was allowed inside so it makes it a bit hard to accompany him. And I just measured his hair, it's one inch long on the top. Going from three plus inches to one inch makes it hard to slick that back, not spike up. You don't need to be so defensive. It's okay. I've been three times now. The first time my haircut was okay, but the sides were all uneven. I had asked for the barber/stylist to blend the sides with scissors, but she "forgot" and used the clippers. Also, the top was not short enough, but they stylist/barber said "it would not look good shorter." The second time I went, I had a gentleman named Steve. He did a great job, he listened to what I wanted, and my haircut turned out good. However, went this morning, they were not too busy, and I was told the wait would be 20 minutes. No big deal. However, when two of the barbers/stylists finished, they chatted a bit, went into the back room (like most will between cuts), then came out and both were texting/emailing on their phones. After a few minutes one of them called the person who was there before me, while the other sat down, and texted/emailed on her phone. After watching her for about 15 minutes, I decided that she did not wish to work, did not wish to cut my hair, and did not need the money. So I left, and they did not care. I suppose if you want a hair cut like you could get at Haircuttery or SportClips, but have a lot of time to waste, this would be a place for you to go. I'll go back to spending more, and get treated with respect at LifeSpa. read more

Returned on 2/26/2016 for waxing with Stefanie. Once again she did an outstanding job, no spots were misses, no stray hairs and no leftover wax residue after clean up. She's a 5 star Esthetician. You won't be disappointed getting waxed by Stefanie Unbeknownst to most people, Mad Men Barbershop also has an Esthetician named Stefanie with a complete men's waxing menu. I went there today for a chest wax. Stefanie's work area is in a private room within the barbershop and is very clean. After completing the information sheet, I was immediately taken by Stefanie to her work area. Stefanie was very welcoming and professional and took great care during the waxing. After she was done, she had me inspect the area that was waxed in a mirror. They need to let more people know they have an Esthetician and a complete men's waxing menu. I don't typically leave reviews on yelp, but when I do it's either because of exceptional service, or in this case, when services rendered are subpar at best. Being new to the Illinois area, I figured I'd give this place a shot. I am an avid straight shave guy, and have been getting shaves on average once weekly for the past 10 years. Just dropped into this place and won't be returning. The haircut was fine, but the shave left a lot to be desired. When you spend $30+ for a straight razor shave, you expect something a little more than sub par at best. This barber was sloppy in his craft. Left a huge patch of hair on my upper lip, also left me with "mutton chops," which I immediately had to walk back in and with an eye roll from the staff & have removed. It Seemed to me as though he was more concerned with "turning and burning" than anything else. They do not shave you the proper way a barber should: with the grain and over AGAIN against the grain. I have SO much stubble after this ordeal, that I'm going to have to go home and shave again! I was offered a "steam" up sell. SERIOUSLY?!? Do it the correct way the first time without the up sell game. A straight razor shave is meant to last more than 15 minutes in my book...sigh...I'm out $50 for the haircut and shave, & my search for an actually skilled barber in the area continues...my two cents: STAY AWAY... read more

I have been trying to get an appointment at this location who tells me they do not take any reservations and is Walk in only . I called today and asked if they had any availabilities and they said that they were open. I drove 25 minutes to get there today and there was 4 people had a me with a 45 minute wait. It's not the 1st time it has happened to me however I'm sure there are other locations who can accommodate appointments and availability. I've given this spot probably way too many chances to get it right. - Terrible attitude - Front desk rep tears through your soul with her eyes upon your entrance, like "why tf are you inconveniencing me?" - All the good barbers leave this spot and work elsewhere #facts - The one guy (wont say name or age) is a nightmare barber, likely impaired most of the time. One time he rushed through my hair because he saw another guy requested him (i have zero idea why anyone would) and didn't do what I politely asked him to one after the other. There's a reason he's always available when you "walk-in" - these barbers smoke q15minutes and if you get a haircut from them you're basically inhaling second hand smoke and require a pulmonary function test afterwards - they started really well, but have spiraled into nothing more than a you're just another $20 got me, kinda depersonalized the art of cutting hair. Not impressed... but it is what it is.. This was my first time in the shop. The lady at the front desk asked me if I had a preference to do the service. Being this was my first time there, I had no frame of reference. I told her it didn't matter. After all, I don't have much hair anyway and I was just looking for a buzz down to the scalp but wanted my sideburns faded into the cut (I have a beard). As soon as I met the barber I didn't have a lot of confidence he was going to fade in my sideburns. He was a very nice older gentleman, but I just knew it wouldn't end well. Sure enough, he had zero clue on how to fade my burns. I even told him how I wanted it before he started. He tried twice and finally I was like... I'm good. There was no way I would have him keep trying because my beard would have been done for. He was a very nice guy, but it was clear to me after looking around at the other barbers that he was the worst one they had. I saw a few other people getting similar cuts and sideburn fades that we good. Maybe it's just me, but if I'm running that shop I'm telling the front desk lady NOT to give new customers to that older gentleman. That is the first impression you want someone to have about your shop!? I get it, he's a nice guy but I have to believe the front desk lady knew what she was doing by sending me to that guy, it was also clear that the other barbers knew that guy was the weak link. I normally shave my own head and fade my own beard, but I wanted to give this place a shot after driving past it so many times. This was the first time I've been to a barber shop in several years. Needless to say, I won't be going back to this one. I read another persons review before writing this and they mentioned how the front desk lady was rude. I wouldn't exactly say she was rude to me, but her personality was a little rough for a new customer. She was nice to the regulars though. Just a tip... the old guy doesn't know how to fade, but they know that already. They just don't really care. They have enough customers coming in and out of that place to worry about people that aren't pleased with that guys quality. The front desk lady asked me how it went and all I said was "it was okay". No other inquiries from her on why it was just okay. She asked me what I wanted before she paired me up with the guy. Maybe she thought "how bad can he screw up a guy who has no hair". Blending in a beard by the sideburns is important when you have a shaved head. I think they need to recognize what customers needs are and do a better job at not setting up people for a bad experience . They know that guys barber skills have seen better days.
