The service was poor at best which has been the trend at this location. When placing our order I couldn't even order a salad or appetizer because our server literally was walking past while taking our food order. Yum! Came here mid week for a late lunch with my sister in law. I've always heard great things about the Happy Hour at Mad Mex but I've never been! I'll be back to check it out when I'm in town. I grew up with Mad Mex when I started college in 1996. Still a favorite of mine, but I can see the age showing a bit. Food is consistently good. Not great, but solid. I think it's more about the overall quality of Mexican & Tex-Mex restaurants getting better over the years and Mad Mex staying pretty much the same. Back in the 90's, I remember seeing the dishwasher at the Oakland location running a rack of citrus through the dishwasher to heat the fruit up, before juicing each fruit by hand. That was how they made their margaritas. I assume it's still the same. Black Cherry FTW. Alas, the Oakland original is closed. The wings are still some of the best around and the chick-pea chili burrito will always have a especial place for me! read more

The place sits in a strip mall right off of the main highway. There is an outside area in which you could eat. We went to the counter and were seated. We were asked if the bar area sitting was ok and that was fine. We were told about the 22 oz. Margaritas. I wish but I have to get in the road. I vouched for the regular 16. I ordered the crispy tilapia fish taco and waited for the chips. What? No chips and salsa? That is different. My order came out and my friend asked how it was. Ummmm.....its ok. The comment was made that it was a true Americanized version. I agree. This is not the place to come if you want authentic Mexican food. Far from it. If you like a truly Ameri-Mexican version than this is the place for you. The food and the Margaritas are just ok. Not bad but just ok. Personally when I do Mexican food I want authentic of as close as I can get and oh.... Maybe I'm spoiled but free chips and salsa is a staple at most. I grew up in the neighborhood so I know I have had better here. My daughter said that this was her favorite spot but it depends on what you like. I really like Mad Mex for dine in, but I've never had good take out. I've found that take out seems to come with a quarter of the options and ingredients. I got the Nacho Mamma's taco platter, which usually has the option to add guacamole and sour cream and comes with the slaw. What I got was a container with dry tortillas, dry, hard rice, some beans, lettuce, cheese, and some meat. It wasn't even close to what you get in the restaurant. I can understand that we need to assemble the tacos so they're not soggy, but the take out meals skimp on so much, it's not even worth it. read more

You ever visit a place and have such a good experience that you forget to write about it? Yeah, it might just be me, but that's what happened here. I had visited here a long time ago and never wrote a review. The last time I was here I got exactly what I ordered, perfect service and had a wonderful time. This time I had called ahead to place an order for pickup and had the same great service as if I was eating in house. Of course it doesn't hurt that we got the Gobblerito to go. You can never go wrong with that. The whole Thanksgiving meal wrapped in a burrito. Just to give you the run down of what's wrapped inside: turkey, mashed potatoes, black beans, corn, stuffing. Then you get that covered with a helping of gravy and have your cranberry on the side. If this isn't a nap inducing meal, I don't know what is. I do like this location as there are ample places to sit and it's always lively in here. read more

Mad Mex has been our go-to since the grand opening years ago. As the happy hour crowd we always have a great experience with the entire staff (as well as the people we've met who also enjoy tasty margaritas and craft beer). Ashley, Malj, Tim, Travis... (plus the folks that moved on) everyone has always treated us kindly and are true professionals. That's the three star rating. The food at the Monroeville store? Meh. It is always hit or miss. We ate there two days in a row. Both times the order came out cold. The replacement burrito was delicious. The wings no. They were dry, overcooked and inedible both times. Even when the kitchen supposedly 'fixed' the error with a new order. What a travesty to waste so much food and to put the service team in the position of making it right. Additionally, the kitchen is putting the waitstaff in the position to potentially receive a smaller tip based on food quality and customer satisfaction. This review is for the Monroeville store only. We've never encountered inconsistencies at the other Mad Mex locations or the other Big Burrito restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. read more

My server and her manager did remedy part of the situation by comping my meal. The particular situation being that the seasonal offering of Grill Street Corn and Steak tacos came with no corn but lots of purple cabbage stuff. I didn't open them up to look until almost finished, then wondered about it and asked my server. The response, though refreshingly honest, was surprising -- "that's the 3rd time tonight". Wow. I'd say "Somebody's 'not' in the kitchen with Dinah"... Anyway, I did want to downgrade my last review as I had really liked this place in the past and it had been a long while since visiting. This visit was a disappointment all the way around. I ordered a regular margarita and did not finish it. It was way too something... Too limey, I think. Unlike any other margarita I've downed and not in a good way. Then the food order took forever to come to our table, regardless of being crowded or not. And the tacos, well, I've already mentioned no corn whatsoever and then loads of the purple cabbage stuff to cover up the fact that there was little steak and hardly any sauce. And the choice of music and volume level, well.... whatever. While I do appreciate being comped for my meal and they have free wifi (but you have to ask for the password), it just wasn't enough to overcome other poor factors on this visit when there are other Mexican food options in the near vicinity. read more

I've been to the Happy Valley location multiple times in college and I wasn't disappointed when I returned to this location on my way to a concert in Pittsburgh. The three-dip appetizer was delicious, we chose the original salsa, guacamole and the cheese dip. I ordered a raspberry frozen margarita, which was good, just a bit salty. Stopped in Mad Mex this past weekend. I have gone several times to many of the different Mad Mex's in the area and it has always been a solid choice albeit a bit expensive for the Cali-Mexican food they provide. This past visit I ordered the Chopper Salad. Quite delicious. It came on a bed of mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, roasted asparagus, chick peas and green peas, sliced avocado, and grilled chicken for my protein. Some of the pieces of chicken were a little too grilled, almost burnt, but it wasn't overpowering and the other ingredients did a fine job dancing around my bowl. Very filling. In the past I have ordered their tacos and have always been extremely pleased. They offer free chips and salsa but this past time we were not offered them, making me think they changed that. However after ordering and having a drinks, the bartender then asks if we would like a bowl. Be warned their original salsa packs a punch! I love spicy food and this salsa had me tasting nothing but heat. I would imagine if you weren't so crazy about over-the-top heat, you would hate it. Everything was pretty good about this experience except my last drink. I ordered a Manhattan, Makers Mark, on the rocks. I love a good Manhattan and this one was ok. Tasted a little watery to me. I always eat my cherry after I finish my drink, and this was no exception, except when I bit down and swallowed I had an overwhelmingly sour and rotten taste in my mouth. I think the cherry had gone south, and man did it make for an unpleasant end. I felt a little nauseous after that. The whole way home and a few hours after. We came to meet my boyfriend's mom tonight as a halfway point to her since she lives out of town. She has never been to Mad Mex and was impressed with the environment given COVID-19. Tables were properly spaced 6 feet apart and seemed properly sanitized prior to dining. The only reason I am not giving this review 5 stars is because I wasn't aware it was happy hour when we were there because the server did not include that in her introduction. I got the grilled street corn and steak tacos which I very much enjoyed. I also go the Jalapeño margarita (not on happy hour) because it's one of my favs. I definitely would've waited until after happy hour since it wasn't part of the special. My waiter, Tim, brought us water after we were seated and we already planned our meal so he took our order. Not many waiters think ahead and bring you water but Tim did and I appreciate that. THIS MAD MEX IS CANCELED WORST MAD MEX IVE EVER BEEN TO IN MY Life! After enjoying my time and paying $85 in their restaurant (30% for my tip as I do at all establishments during covid) I didn't realize my retainer was bussed mistakenly with the napkins. I lost a brand new alligner for my braces, when my napkin was bussed by mistake. Without realizing until I got on the highway I was already forced to have to wait until I could turn around. I immediately called when I realized I had lost it but was disconnected when I was put on hold. How Management handled the situation from here on out is an absolute disaster, the female manager with dark hair literally is the most inconsiderate human being in the entire world. I called back and was immediately met with a rude attitude, I asked to be reconnected with the person I was speaking to as they went to grab my waitress to see if she could look really fast and see where it may have been thrown to. The lady in the phone announced herself as the manager and immediately had an attitude for some reason.. so when I thought I would have been helped, in reality she cold heartedly started pressing me with there being "health violations" to look and see if the top of their trash or even if that bag could be separated. From the other trash. (because I had left no more than 5 minutes ago) I expected this to be an easy in an out fix, She immediately started slandering me on the phone and hung up on me..... I was baffled, and didn't know what to do so I called the police to meet me there. When we met with the cop, woe and behold no more health violations were talked about, and I was suddenly granted access to their dumpster... a place I knew my retainer wasn't because it happened less than 20 minutes ago and there were maybe 10 other people there. 10 people don't fill a 55 gallon trash bag. The dumpster had all of their fresh clippings from the morning veggies and not a single bag was from todays customers. I know... I embarrassingly was forced like an animal to check every single bag for the one bag I needed. I asked as nicely as humanly possible that all I needed was 10 seconds of time from the last person who threw out the trash... anyone in the food industry knows that if you throw out a bag of trash, even through there are other bags you would know right away which one you threw. She lied, to me, to the police, and will to you all, her customers. She had the discression to help someone, and instead decided to represent her branch of Mad Mex Monroeville with a "your loss", "too bad", "sucks to suck" type mentality. Not a chance in this world that I would EVER go back to a company with such an embarrassment for management. read more

Mad Mex is my favorite local chain, and is probably my favorite chain (sorry Winky's). That said, I cannot ever recommended it to anybody looking to eat in Monroeville. Our annual roadtrip to Maryland from Wisconsin always includes a dinner stopover at Mad Mex with the college bestie (go PITT). Having always gone to the Oakland location through college (early 2000s), I haven't been as familiar with this location until recommended by said bestie to ensure an easy highway stop. It's still delicious. I almost always get the shrimp, mushroom and spinach burrito, which is always perfect. My wife gets the veggie and bestie the chicken mad mex burrito. In all our years I always pretend we will have leftovers, but we never do. I'm a plate scraper. 4 stars because there isn't any sort of chips and salsa situation I get at my other burrito spots - that would elevate Mad Mex to a solid 5 for me. read more

We have enjoyed MM over the years for the consistent quality of food, drinks and service. Last Saturday we had an underwhelming experience which maybe was just a off night for them. First thing we noticed was the place being relatively empty for 7:00pm on a Saturday night. Place is usually hopping and a wait for a table is normal but not tonight. Our server was very nice but was never attentive on drinks or checking on us (he blew by our table a lot and would get to us when we flagged him down. We also love their margaritas but they got screwed up, sugar on a rim asking for salt and no sugar on rim as requested on the other. When asked to get a sugar rim was told that they are now out of sugar (what?). A go to is the pineapple habenero margarita and have had it several times. Tonight it was just a regular margarita with barley any pineapple habenero flavor. When asked to have more added he came back and said only at an additional cost so I declined. Had the street tacos which I love but they were served cold. Not even close to being warm, entire plate, beans and rice included. I ate them anyway because of difficulty getting server attention and because of slow turnaround from kitchen on order. I know it sounds like I'm being overly critical but I love MM and every aspect of it tonight was just bad. I still see recent reviews being good so I'm not giving up on them considering our previous good experiences. But I'll keep checking Yelp before going again to see if this is a concerning trend or just one bad night. read more

They were not going out of their way to be sanitary and I was so glad I had my own Clorox wipes. We are in covid and I am happy to support businesses, but a little bit of pleasantness from employees would help. My mom came here for lunch over the weekend. We started with the Jersey Chips appetizer, which is their amazing waffle fries with ranch and their XX cheese dip. I highly recommend this app as it was so so good! For our entrees, I ordered the Chopper Salad with grilled chicken and the house dressing (which is a creamy balsamic). My mom ordered the fish tacos, which came with a side of rice and beans. All of our food was amazing, except for the light breading on the fish tacos. It gave the fish a weird taste, so my mom didn't eat much of her tacos. She said she wouldn't order them again, but there are so many other options, that it's not a big deal. I'm a big Mad Mex fan, and have been to almost all of their locations surprisingly. We occasionally make it out to the Monroeville location when we meet with family. As such, we were here for Mother's Day to take part of their specials for the day. The deal itself was great, $15 for an app, entree and dessert*. Why the asterisk? Well, the email from Big Burrito Group said "ANY" dessert, while this location said you only get the Mexican Brownie. All the desserts costs the same, so not sure why it mattered much. By the time we got to dessert they were out of brownies and we were able to choose a different option. Overall, the meal fell flat on a lot of fronts... long wait times for drinks, they kept forgetting items we ordered, forgot sauce on the enchiladas, cold quesadilla, etc. And when the dessert came, well they were missing ingredients (like no ice cream in the ice cream burrito). I think it was a great promotion, but either they were overwhelmed and/or just had a bad day. read more

This place has a great atmosphere on a Friday night. Love the decorations and overall vibe this place gives you. When you arrive and there's a wait, you give them your name and number and you'll be texted when they can seat you. There aren't any menus online but they have a bunch of options between tacos, fajitas, salads, soups etc. you get the point. The Tex mex restaurant is definitely one of the better Mexicans inspired cuisine chains I've been to. I'd definitely go check this place out. $14 for pork tacos, and you get three of them. The parking is close by as it is in a strip mall, the entrance is through the patio which seems odd. The patio seems like it would be great for the summertime. read more

While out shopping and running errands, my husband and I decided to stop here for a late lunch today...I have only been to Mad Mex on a few occasions years ago and my husband has never been. We had a coupon for his birthday...up to $30 for one entree. And, while I know that this can be used at one of The Big Burrito Companies many other more expensive locations, due to time restraints and my husband's work schedule, we decided to try Mad Mex, since it's closest to home. I asked the waitress if the $30 coupon would go toward the least expensive entree and she said no, she'd put it toward the more expensive one, which I thought was cool. I got the steak and chicken fajitas, which came with rice, sour cream and guacamole, and veggies. Since it would be considered part of the "free meal", I added the 6 jumbo shrimp. My husband got the Chicken Mole Enchiladas, which came with rice, black beans, and sour cream. Both of us thought our meals were good, not over the top delicious, but not bad at all. I tried a bite my husband's chicken enchilada. It was okay, I just wasn't wild about the sauce. My chicken, flank steak, shrimp, and veggies were cooked just fine. The service was good and our food came out rather quickly. The only two reasons I can't give this place 5 stars is first of all - the bathroom wasn't the cleanest. Sort of gross, actually. And, two, my meal, which would have technically been $21.50 ($15.50 for fajitas and $6 for the shrimp skewer) if not for the free coupon, was, well...lacking. Everything tasted good, but there was definitely a lot more sauteed onions and peppers than there was chicken and steak. If we would not have had the coupon and I would have received the amount of meat that I did, I would have been upset. (On the contrary, my husband's enchilada, which was $4 less, was a huge portion.)
