Recently my brother and I went to Mad Mex hoping for a gobblerito, but we failed to check online before we went and narrowly missed them! Our visit to the Robinson location was good, anyways. I've been to this location a handful of times previously and never had a bad experience. Both of us got burritos and an appetizer of chips and salsa to share. I also decided to have a margarita and it really hit the spot! My burrito had 3 different sauces on it, a side of sour cream, and I decided on beef birria as my protein. Definitely worth the small upcharge! Overall our dinner was enjoyable and the waitress was friendly and helpful. We don't go to Mad Mex super often, but it's a good choice in the Robinson area and the prices are fair. As a chain restaurant hater most of the time, I do like Mad Mex. read more

We have dined at Mad Mex many times over the years and we just revisited the restaurant last evening. It was nice to experience the same great service and food that we remember it to be. The spicy burrito with grilled shrimp was simply fresh and delicious. Additionally, I enjoyed a light specialty drink, the Skinny Azz Margarita, and it tasted great without being too sugary. The service was great despite it being a quite busy night. The servers greeted us and wished us a safe and enjoyable evening as we left which was a very nice touch. read more

I come for the Gobblerito and am never disappointed. It's like Thanksgiving all wrapped up in a little burrito. I recommend getting extra cranberry sauce. I am updating my previous rating. The last couple times I've been to this location it has improved. The bar area here is huge. Bigger than most of the other Mad Mex locations. After a flight today I stopped by here for a drink or two and some wings. I haven't had wings in forever and I enjoy Mad Mex wings. I forgot to ask for well done. Mad Mex generally does them on the well side anyway. I get grossed out by gummy, soft wings. Today without me asking, they were perfect. The bar staff was where I sat was very attentive. I was the first to arrive to this location out of a group of 12 coworkers. We stopped in to have some food and drinks for an employee who was leaving our company. From the time we entered and left you would have thought we were a total inconvenience. A more than half empty restaurant and we were advised they don't have a table for 12 and not sure if they could actually seat us at all. I asked if we could go to the bar and the manager who was a blonde woman said "sure" but we can't really hang out for long. (What does that even mean???). We made our way to the bar and our group was casually making their way in but we were advised that we can use any of the bar tables and we all have to open separate tabs, which was fine. Out of thin air a back table randomly appeared (sarcasm) and they said we can move our party to that table and we would have a dedicated waitress. The waitress took one round of drinks and appetizer order and then never came back. We couldn't even get a refill of waters. When I went back to the bar the bartender said we have to order from our waitress and I said "The one that doesn't want to wait on us??" And told her I would just give her cash for a beverage since I know she didn't really want me opening a tab. The was my 2nd time here and both have been subpar and a joke. Stopped in for a light dinner. My wife and I shared the queso and chips and the Korean fried tofu as appetizers and split the avodillo quesadilla entree. The queso and had a nice kick to it and was served with warm tortilla chips. The Korean tofu was a bit of an oddity on the menu of a Mexican place but ordered it at the recommendation of our server. It was small, crispy, fried tofu cubes with peanuts tossed in a sweet Korean sauce. It was very good despite it being a weird thing to eat at a Mexican restaurant. The quesadilla was very good. Liked this the most. It was overly oily or cheesy like quesadillas can get, and was served with a mango salsa. Very tasty. Only complaint (and a minor one at that) was the portion size for the quesadilla was a little on the small side but was plenty considering we were not very hungry to begin with. I normally go to the Monroeville location. Came here figuring it was a chain, it would be the same. Wrong! House margarita was extremely bitter with a slight spoiled taste. Undrinkable The salsa also had a strange taste to it. The chips were good and warm, so there's that.... The taco salads were actually disappointing as well. I ordered and consumed Jerk chicken tacos...I think they forgot to put the jerk seasoning on as they tasted like plain, rubbery chicken. The rice and black beans also were bland. Usually, I get a side of it separately and I can add the chicken on myself. And the tortilla was also in the salad. Not a big deal at all, I just prefer the chicken and tortilla separated. My husband was dining at mad mex and asked what I wanted so I had asked that he ordered the spicy mad mex burrito with chicken to go. When I tried it, it had a lot of rice, which I actually like but it had almost 0 chicken. I thought I miss ordered and just got a veggie burrito but 1/2 way through there was some shredded chicken on the right side of the burrito. My suggestion is to just revisit and set some standards to how these are prepared. If you cut open a chicken burrito... you should see chicken for the $20 price. Not all rice and no chicken. In full transparency I love rice and ate it but wanted to provide some form of feedback. My husbands in restaurant experience was good. Him & my son tried the gobblerito and loved it. The pineapple habanero margarita was FIRE. Had just enough heat and I really enjoyed the pineapple, I think it had some pulp in it. The trio dip was good, but I wouldn't get the original salsa, not that special. BUT THE CORN, I enjoyed that. I also got the tofu and portobello mushroom fajitas, and I'm super surprised they had that as an option! I was a huge fan and happy I got it. It was light, but it was a lot of food! Stopped in with a coworker for lunch on a weekday and was quickly seated and greeted. Tried their beer cheese dip and chips, it was pretty good, with only a slight beer flavor and definitely wasn't as spicy as the menu and server made it out to be. Also tried their original salsa - it was thick, not saucy and it was tasty too. Entrée consisted of their Tinga Taco - the marinade on the chicken was great! The beans and rice that came with it was just OK, but tasted better with lots of hot sauce. The restaurant has a cool, authentic theme and décor and the menu is loaded with interesting, unique southwestern style food. I've been to the Mad Mex in Shadyside and thought the food was incredible and the portions were worth the money. I was looking forward to try a different location but am overall disappointed in the quality of food and drinks. I was excited about the 22 oz margarita being discounted on happy hour. It was... terrible. I understand that a happy hour drink is pre-made but it was 99% sour and 1% tequila and 100% a bad experience. I tried to drink it, could only stomach maybe 2 or 3 sips, and ended up ordering a beer instead. I told my waitress I didn't like it and she was understanding and explained it's very tart and most people don't expect that. I do feel I wasted $8 and am pretty disappointed. I'd recommend sticking to beer and taking advantage of the half off draft menu for happy hour. The honey chipotle wings were very flavorful and juicy but also cold. I asked my server if they are supposed to be cold and she told me no and immediately had her manager bring me new wings (I didn't ask for them but she told me they should be at least warm). I really appreciated this level of service. The new wings were warmer but less juicy and didn't taste as good. They tasted like they were put in the microwave. I want to be clear that the service was amazing - Brooke and her manager were attentive and kind. However, I don't think the quality of food and drinks at this location is up to par. This place is delicious! They have a very extensive menu that made it hard to decide what to order. But that is a good problem to have! As a vegetarian I appreciated having several options, ones that included tofu! That is very rare so it automatically gave this place a leg up. The trio of dips for the appetizer is a great way to kick off your meal. The fire roasted salsa, guac, and queso were good, but the bean dip really stole the show. I wish I could've taken a bucket of it to go. The tacos and burritos that we had were also very good and the portions were large. You'll definitely get your money's worth at this place! read more

This place is incredible every single time we eat-in or take-out. This visit we requested a booth near the bar. We very much enjoy the seasonal menu items that are offered. This time we got the Reuben quesadilla and crab dip. After we ordered, the waiter made us aware they ran out of cheese for the Reuben and we would get half the amount of cheese and offered a discount, which we accepted. We also got the crab dip! Would have never known the Reuben was missing half the cheese - it was delicious. Appreciate the honesty from the staff there. I always loveee the margaritas on the rocks, and will often request a mix of flavors. This time I got the prickly pear and strawberry and highly recommend. We also got the Jersey waffle fries which are perfectly crispy on the outside and so magical in their dip options. The cheese dip and ranch both are so good. Whenever I'm back in Pittsburgh, I try to make a visit to Primanti's and Mad Mex. Ever since I had those cilantro green wings at their North Hills location 30-ish years ago, I was in love. As my tastes change, I've expanded and appreciate their dedication to vegetarians, something a younger me wouldn't understand. On this visit, I indulged in those southwestern wings and glad I did! So good. I also got the Tofu Wrapture which was a delicious burrito with Tofu as the main item. I did buffalo sauce as my choice, but would totally do the green wing sauce next time. Since I got the wings with the green sauce, I wanted a different flavor in my wrap. Around Thanksgiving (and usually one day during the summer), they have their Gobblerito, which is a Turkey/Stuffing/Cranberry burrito which is also a must try if it's on the menu. Their burritos are massive and kind of squared off instead of cylindrical. Maybe the founders were Huey Lewis fans. That Green Southwestern Wing Sauce! Get it on anything! Yum! Not sure what's happening here... I ordered the tofu wrap as I do nearly every time I eat here because I'm a vegetarian. The checked out server brought me the chicken wing wrap and then disappeared. I started to eat the accompanying salad, hoping to let him know his error when he returned, but he disappeared. I had to wave down another server And get a manager to help. They apologized profusely and had the kitchen remake. The original server came over and apologized to the table next to me, who must have looked confused. Especially since they had their food sitting in front of them. He then turned to me and said, "was that you? I'm sorry, you both had wraps." We were his only two tables at the time. How checked out are you? The correct tofu wrap came out. Then I asked for the check. When they brought it, I was surprised to see the subtotal of $30.95, for both a chicken wrap and a tofu wrap, and an iced tea. A discount code of WRONG was applied to remove the chicken wrap. But the recommended gratuity amounts at the bottom were calculated on the "pre-discount" amount. How sneaky is that? 2 stars for the wasted time, food waste, lax customer service, and sneakiness. We had a great experience at this Mad Mex location. We walked in around 7:00pm on Thanksgiving eve and were greeted very kindly by the hostess Emily. We did not expect to get a table right away, but luckily we did! Our waitress was also very kind and was willing to give us suggestions. We ordered shots, drink, and dips and they came very quickly. Honestly some of the most disgusting food I've eaten in my entire life. First off, I feel bad for David our waiter. He was great and very nice, so this review has nothing to do with him. I can not believe the fact that I paid $14 for genuinely the worst burrito I've ever put in my mouth. I took one bite and had to swallow it down like a pill with water, and it came right back up in the bathroom. The rice was crunchy, the flank steak was like chewing rubber, and the sauce tasted like gasoline. Not even spicy, just disgusting. I would rather eat literally ANY other food from any other restaurant before coming back here. I never ever EVER complain at restaurants about the outcome of food, but this is the worst experience I've ever had. This review is only for the Robinson Township location. TLDR: Bad food, bad service, and even worse management. My friends and I met for an early dinner at Mad Mex Robinson on a Friday night around 5:30 (just in time for happy hour) and were very surprised by how empty the restaurant was. We were seated immediately and put in appetizer and drink orders. Everything was going well until we ordered entrees.... Order: Me: small plate of honey chipotle BBQ wings and a Casa salad. Friend 1: Steak Fajitas with added shrimp skewer Friend 2: Mad Mex quesadilla with steak Friend 3: some kind of burrito no beans After we placed our order, the server seemed to disappear. We waited at least 45 minutes on our food order and asked several times for more chips to hold us over. Then our food came: My Casa salad was fantastic but that was all I ate. The food runner came and asked who ordered the large order of honey chipotle BBQ wings. I told them that I ordered a small plate and they immediately left the table and later returned with a small plate of cold wings. Friend 1: Steak fajitas, which are prices at $19.50, only included four pieces of steak on a large bed of fried onions. Friend 2: Ordered a steak quesadilla but received the carnitas quesadilla. Friend 3: Order came out with beans but was able to immediately get a new plate as they spotted this as food was delivered. Although we waited a very long time in a seemingly empty restaurant, this was when things took a real turn. The server did not check on us to ask how the food was and when we decided to leave, we had to go to the hostess stand to ask for our check. When checks came, we were charged with what we ordered and not the food we received so our server sent the manager over to talk to us. Face to face, the manager was very pleasant and told us he would comp the food we did not eat. Then our second checks came from the server: some food was comped on my friend's check but my check only included happy our specials. We specifically asked the waitress about the lack luster steak fajitas and the server informed us that the manager told her that Friend 2 ate all of the steak. I really wish I had taken a photo of the fajita plate because it was pathetic and now we were being portrayed as liars (neither the server or manager delivered the steak fajitas to the table). After more discussion with our server, she was able to comp us for the food we did not eat and we split our checks. My friend paid cash and I paid with my card. Luckily I have alerts for my card set up and immediately noticed I was charged more than $20 than what my bill was. I notified the server of this and she apologized and claimed to fix it, but charges will have to drop off in a few days so we'll see about that. So long story short, we wasted about 2 hours on a round of drinks, chips & salsa, and a really bad experience. read more
