There were a few customers in the store while some women were crocheting or knitting at a table in the back. We walked by them (I even scooted a chair in) to look at yarns and they didn't stand up or say anything. Finally, dad and his daughter walked over saying they wanted to buy something so I went over to get in line behind them with some yarns. Bad service, nice selection of yarn as well as books and patterns and accessories. Not cheap but organized nicely and easy-to-find items (which is important when there's no one there to help you.)

They even said Jody Long had visited the shop in person- wow! They had plenty of wool, alpaca, silk, and more-- a good, high-end selection overall. The two women who were working were very nice and provided me with a lot of feedback (when asked) on yarns for various projects. I loved their cute Pride display and left with some beautiful Juniper Moon Cumulus yarn. If they'd had more in the colorway I'd chosen, I would have bought more. I don't visit Half Moon Bay frequently, but if I find myself in the area again, I will definitely stop by.

This is the gallery showroom location for the non profit coastal arts league. It's a kind of co-op…read morefor local artists and members which is usually chock full of varied, local art displays. Parking is street only, and due to the popularity of some of the adjacent businesses this can mean you'll be a block or so away either on main or on one of the side streets. This is a medium sized space tucked away on the north end of a courtyard kind of space which usually has installations from a half dozen or so local artists. What you see displayed can be purchased and it's common for one of the artists to be in and/or around the building. It's staffed solely by volunteers who can be conversational but not necessarily well versed in the art. As they also offer classes inside typically the back part won't be utilized for gallery space but instead will look to be cluttered with whatever the last class left behind. The art rotates constantly thus no two visits will be quite the same. All mediums are represented at one point or another. On my visit there were paintings-acrylic, oil and watercolor-bronze sculpture, fiber/paper mache and some intriguing cloth pieces. Quite the varied experience really. If you live in the area, or are spending some time in town you might consider joining the art's league. There are a ton of member benefits including but not limited to: classes and workshops, free art screenings, meet the artist events, networking and most useful for those who are artists a consistent way to get your out in public view. Pricing is set by the artists themselves and doesn't appear to be negotiable in the gallery, but they do offer ways to contact the artist directly should you so chose. In an not quite entirely unrelated matter, the front desk/cashier has the keys to the public restroom next door, all you have to do is ask preferably politely. This is a good spot to browse for local, quality art pieces.

The sales people were clear-eyed, smart and knowledgeable. A guy named Sam patiently walked me through their inventory and explained everything. I am embarrassed to say even though I am in my 70's there is a definite gap in my education. Even if you don't 'smoke' this place is definitely worth a visit just to look at the beautiful glass art.

As i was looking in the guy behind the counter waved at me which seemed a little strange(i wasn't used to smoke shop employees being friendly) i didn't have anywhere to be so i hung a u turn and parked in front of the shop as i was getting out i saw a sign that said BUY ONE GET ONE FREE which i was used to seeing at burger king not a smoke shop!!. walking in to the shop was a completely different experience to what i was used to (like most people from san mateo I've grown up going to the cave which meant customer service was kind of wishful thinking and since they were pretty much the only game in town the prices were hella high) the guy behind the counter introduced himself as Sam and asked if it was my first time in there. I said it was and he proceeded to give me a tour of the shop from a variety of scientific bongs to colorful pipes and even some beautiful animal pipes(i couldn't tell they were pipes until he showed me) they have a great selection of concentrate pieces including a few things only they make. It blew me away that not only did they make everything in the shop but that it was all made locally!!! To make the shop even cooler they have hand carved wooden pipes hanging from the walls. The prices were....idk how to say this but ive never seen such low prices for such high quality I even asked if the tags were a misprint. Sam just laughed and said his boss was a little crazzy but that they believed if the customer was happy then so would they. Sam was really chill and talked me through the whole selection including some pretty complicated perculator systems. He even let me test out a bong i liked using a vapor pen to give me the full feeling, I've never had that happen in a smoke shop before and it was sick!!!! He helped me sign up for their mailing list which also entered me in a monthly contest for a free piece from the shop. I found a cool little turtle pipe and with the buy one get one free i also got a really cool glass sherlock holmes pipe!! the whole transaction only cost me $45!!! Even after i was done buying things i stayed in the shop for another half an hour just talking to sam about tattoos and art he was more interested in being friends than just taking my money. its safe to say this is my shop from now on thank you ART&PEOPLE you guys rock!!!!!

I've taken several classes there as part of the Black Sabbath with the Gargoyles calligraphy…read moreseries. We are currently working on Black Letter Textura. Next is Uncial then Bastarde hands. Needless to say, the skill level is at least intermediate. Attendees should know the basic scribe terminology plus how to ink and hold a pen. Ward and Linnea, the couple who are the Gargoyles, help you with technique and refinement. The 3rd floor walk up studio is full of natural light and the price is very reasonable. As of March 2008, the price works out to $25 for a 3 hour session. The session includes a mixture of group instruction, one on one instruction and independent practice time. They have some supplies and books you can purchase on hand. If you let them know in advance, they may bring may bring additional, non-standard, items. For instance, I'd never used an ink stone and ink stick before but Linnea lent me the supplies to try it out. They have some beginning calligraphy classes as well as classes in other writing and print related disciplines. Later this year, they're having a class teaching people to letter, then carve their own wooden library bookplate. A hand press will be used, too.
